Abstract:Due to the advantages such as high efficiency of electricity generation and high degree of cleanness, Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) power plant represents the direction of development for all fired power plants in China. This essay analyzes the technical requirements and economic attributes of the Chinese IGCC power plant of 400 MW level in plan. It is both necessary and possible for China to develop IGCC power plant with the technical foundation available. The biggest obstacle facing the development of IGCC is the huge amount of investment and high cost of electric generation. According to the sensitivity analysis, investment is the main element affecting the cost of power generation. Though it is difficult to control investment in the present phase, with restricting elements like technique and facility, smooth operation of the project could still be ensured through government’s preferential policies toward IGCC power plant, such as setting price for clean electricity, offering investment subsidies and preferential taxes. The premise for such policies is a determined and consistent development strategy of IGCC technique.

Abstract:The technological characteristics and ways of Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle(IGCC) on energy conservation and emissions reduction was analyzed in this paper.Through the comparison with conventional PC on those environment protection indexes,the results show that IGCC is a new cleaning power generation technology with high efficiency and low pollution emission,especially for CO2 emission control.This technology could provide a new direction of the development of energy conservation and emission reduction in the future.

Abstract:The 200 MW integrated gasification combined cycle(IGCC) system model was established and calculated.Complied with principle of integrity,influences of different steam-water cycle modes and different matching schemes of HRSG with waste heat cooler on overall performance,local thermal characteristics in IGCC were discussed according to mass balance,energy balance and reaction equilibrium of each unit.The results show that three-pressure reheat steam-water cycle mode is beneficial to recycle waste heat of exhaust from gas turbine,to increase main steam parameters of steam turbine,and to boost overall performance in IGCC.Reasonable matching scheme of HRSG with waste heat cooler is designed according to principle of "temperature matching and step utilization of energy".The research results can provide references for optimization design of conventional island in equivalent level IGCC system.

Abstract:With the increasing energy demand, it is essential to improve the utilization of traditional energy sources. Coal is still the mainstay of the Chinese energy market, especially in power generation. The IGCC offers significant advantages in terms of power efficiency and environmental protection. However, conventional IGCC uses oxygen as the gasification medium, posing serious economic challenges. To address this challenge, in this study, the overall system process for the IGCC systems using air-blown gasification is constructed by Aspen Plus. To explore the potential of the thermal performance of the air-blown gasification IGCC system, the operating parameters and process flows are improved. The energy and exergy analysis of the whole system using the advanced process is carried out and compared with the oxygen gasification IGCC. Optimal operating parameters and technical parameters are determined, and the gasifier is optimized. The results show that the system efficiency increased by 3.17%, and the exergy efficiency increased by 3.09%. Although the integrated gas turbine process does not offer obvious advantages, it is more compatible with the current gas turbine in terms of flow rate. The utilization of a high-pressure reheat gas turbine results in a 2.52% increase in system efficiency. The implementation of high-pressure reheat gas turbines and hot gas desulfurization can improve the thermal performance of the system. The air-blown gasification IGCC with this process has the highest power supply efficiency of 52.80%. It presents an improvement of 3.69% compared with oxygen gasification. The exergy loss in the cooling and cleaning module and the gas turbine module is significantly reduced. The heat efficiency of the air-blown gasification IGCC is 3.60% higher, and the effective energy in the system is fully utilized. It provides some heuristic ideas for the clean and efficient utilization of coal resources.

Abstract:A novel partial gasification combined cycle (PGCC ) system integrating coal partial gasification, oxy-fuel combustion, combined cycle, and CO2 separation is proposed. The coal-CO2 partial gasification technology is introduced in the coal gasification unit, and the oxy-fuel combustion technology is employed in the char combustion unit and gas turbine (GT) unit. The thermodynamic and economic analysis of the proposed system is carried out, showing that both energy and exergy efficiency have an increasing/decreasing tendency when the recycled flue gas (RFG) ratio of char combustion and GT increase. When the RFG ratios of char combustion and GT are 0.43 and 0.34, energy and exergy efficiencies reach maximum values of 48.18 and 45.11%, respectively. The energy efficiency of the PGCC-Oxy system is higher than that of the integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC)-Oxy system by approximately 3%. It can be concluded from the economic analysis that the total investment on the PGCCOxy system is 3272.71 million RMB, and the internal rate of return (IRR) and payback time is 8.07% and 12.38 years, respectively.

Abstract:In order to increase the overall efficiency of IGCC, integration of the steam-side subsystem in IGCC is attracting more and more attention with the development of technology and experience achievement. The existing design methods are generally the simulation and analysis of their performance under the conditions of the given steam subsystem configuration. This usually results in only partial optimization. In this paper, a new idea is presented and a new method––simultaneous optimization of configuration and parameters––is investigated and used for IGCC steam subsystem. These are expected to overcome the shortcomings of the previous ones, adapt to various IGCC technological demand for steam subsystem and realize better cascade utilization of exhaust heat from gas turbine. The optimization model for steam subsystem is established, based on modular modeling idea of general system integration. Case study shows that the synthesis optimization method and model presented in this paper are valuable for steam subsystem performance analysis and optimization design of IGCC.

Abstract:Integrated gasification chemical-looping combustion (IGCLC) is a potential combustion technology with innate CO2 separation for solid fuels. Coupling this technology with coal-fired power plants is expected to greatly alleviate the high efficiency penalty induced by CO2 capture. This study proposes an innovative system called integrated gasification CLC combined cycle (IGCLCCC) that highly integrates a gasification system, a CLC system, a combined cycle, an ultra-supercritical steam cycle, and a CO2 capture system. In the proposed system, the oxygen-depleted stream from air reactor and flue gas from fuel reactor enter the combined cycle and ultra-supercritical steam cycle, respectively, for power generation. The energy and mass balances of the proposed system are determined by process simulation. The relationship between the performance of subsystems and system efficiency is studied by parameter analysis. Results indicate that the net efficiency penalty (0.3 percentage points) of the proposed system is 4.3 to 13.2 percentage points less than those of the conventional CO2 capture power plants, and the power consumption of specific CO2 capture is minimized to 8.3 kWeh/t. Besides, its net efficiency is as high as 45.0%, which is comparable to that of the natural gas combined cycle power plant with a 90% CO2 capture rate. This work provides a new sight into the design of the low-carbon and efficient power generation system.

Abstract:IGCC system has been revealed to be a very attractive power generation system based on coal, promising highly efficient electricity generation and very low environmental impact. The integration of gasifier and power island will be a system engineering. This paper will investigate the influence of IGCC system configuration on system performance. Especially the exhaust heat utilization of syngas from gasifier will be discussed in detail. As the example, one E class gas turbine will be utilized as the core subsystem, the gasifier and HRSG system will be matched. A steady state thermodynamic model for IGCC system is developed on IPSEpro simulation platform and applied to a performance analysis. The characteristics under off-design and design condition for IGCC system were also analyzed.

Abstract:By using the proven commercial software Thermoflex,a simulation was performed of an IGCC (integrated gasification combined cycle) demonstration unit rated at 200 MW,which is to be built in China.A mass and heat balance calculation of the unit was also conducted.By adopting an IGV (inlet guide vane) regulation mode during a load reduction featuring a constant T3 (temperature before a steam turbine),which is currently often used by combined cycle gas turbines,the authors have first analyzed the changes of T3,T4 (exhaust gas temperature) and QGe (gas turbine exhaust gas flow rate) caused by gas turbine off-design operating conditions under the present control mode and then calculated the influence of the change of T3,T4 and QGe on the efficiency,power output,fuel consumption of the system as well as on the main parameters at the steam side.As a result,the off-design characteristics of the IGCC system and a general law governing the change of its main parameters were obtained.A requisite analysis of the safety and cost-effectiveness of the system operating under off-design conditions was performed.It has been found that the regulation modes can directly affect the off-design performance of the IGCC system.To ensure the cost-effectiveness and safety of the IGCC system when it is operating under off-design conditions,the gas turbine should be controlled as much as possible within the IGV regulation limits.

Abstract:Using software GT PRO, complete IGCC systems, equipped with different gasifiers, are studied by simulation. The effects of some representative gasifying technologies on the technical and economical performance of IGCC power plants are analyzed and compared. Results show, that the way coal is fed, has a great bearing on both the system's efficiency and its price per unit. This may serve as a reference for selecting gasifiers in IGCC systems.

Abstract:Gas turbine is the key equipment in IGCC system,and its performance affects the whole system directly.The system model of 200 MW IGCC was established using Thermoflex software,the IGCC system off-design characteristics was mainly analyzed with gas turbine at 40%～100% load.The control modes of falling gas turbine load were analyzed through the changes of the initial temperature of the gas turbine and the IGV of the compressor.From the view point of the system,the changes of the main performance parameters of the IGCC system were studied with off-design gas turbine.The results will offer some reference for IGCC plant design and operation in the future.

Abstract:An Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) is a promising green technology applied for thermal power plants. It offers an efficient way to generate electricity from coal, biomass or any other suitable solid or liquid fuels with lower impact to the environment. The biggest challenge of making IGCC to become a viable technology is its high energy production cost. This creates a barrier for this green technology to enter into the stage of a highly competitive electricity market. An IGCC plant is a complex process system which involves processing units operated in very extreme conditions. Proper material and energy integration may provide a hope for cost reduction. In this paper, a mathematical model of an IGCC plant was built that includes a gasification unit, an Air Separation Unit (ASU) and a Combined Cycle unit. A modified Gibbs free energy model is used for predicting the composition of the syngas taking into account material and energy balances. The proposed gasification model results in syngas composition similar to the experimental data provided in literature. What’s more, Combined Cycle unit is simulated with isentropic assumption plus efficiency. While ASU is simulated mainly using the rigorous distillation model. Although individual processing unit optimization plays a significant role in enhancing the plant performance, an optimal integration among the three units still has significant potential to improve the efficiency, availability, and operability of a coal-fed IGCC power plant. The proposed mathematical model allows material and energy integration to be performed within and among different processing units while optimizing the IGCC plant as a whole. Different material and energy integration schemes were considered with respect to the overall thermal efficiency of the IGCC plant. The good performance is shown by about 2 % overall efficiency increment in the case study.

Abstract:As a promising green technology, Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) plant is more efficient and low-pollution electricity generation choice than conventional thermal power plants. Its process is mainly consist of the gasifier, the air separation unit and the combined cycle unit. Going through those key blocks, the fuel, such as coal and biomass, could be converted to syngas and further combusted for power generation. In order to be a viable technology, the bottleneck is located on the high energy production cost, which could be overcame by improving the plant efficiency through process optimisation and Integration. The opportunity and challenge are given by the complicated configuration and extreme operation conditions, which also demands a flexible and robust IGCC plant simulation to complete deep process analysis. In this work, a novel simplified IGCC mathematical model is proposed considering thermodynamics constraints with energy and mass conservation. The gasification is simulated based on the principle of Gibbs free energy minimisation, which holds the good feature of avoiding potential bi-level optimisation problem. The proposed gasification model results in syngas composition similar to the experimental data provided in literature. Meanwhile, the cryogenic air separation unit is selected with the double distillation column configuration, which is simulated considering the novel simplification of thermal coupled distillation columns. What is more, the combined cycle unit is simulated with isentropic assumption plus efficiency to complete the process. To validate the novel simplified IGCC model, one base case is built and compared with literature data. Another highlight of this work is the simultaneous optimisation and integration methodology instead of conventional sequential one, which gives more guarantee for achieving global optimal solution. If the ideal property assumptions are occupied, a graphical approach could be generated for the simultaneous optimization and integration of IGCC plant. The best material and energy integration scheme in proper operation condition could be selected considered with respect to the overall thermal efficiency of the IGCC plant. The good performance is shown by about 10 % power increment compared with the base case in the case study.

Abstract:Different types of power generating system with integrated coal gasification combined cycle (ICGCC) have been presented. The concept design of ICGCC system of using air for gasification has been carried out, four types of ICGCC power generating system with air for gasification being calculated and analysed. The results of study show that (1) the coalfired ICGCC pwer generating system to have comparatively large comprehensive superiority; (2)under same designed parameters, the ICGCC system with fluidized bed gasifier of lower temperature and that with air flow bed gasifier of higher temperature each has its strong and weak points, it is recommended to use fluidized bed gasifier for ICGCC system allocated with low temperature rough coal gas purification system; (3)during the process of of designing ICGCC system, the inlet temperature of gas turbine should chose a high value as possible. there is an optimal pressure ratio value corresponding to the said temperature; (4) the power supply efficiency of ICGCC system to be 5~7 percentage point higher than that of a conventional power plant.

Abstract:In the research of a more efficient, less costly, more environmentally responsible and less technically difficult method for generating electrical power from coal, the Carried-heat Gasification Combined Cycle (CGCC) is introduced by Tsinghua University. The high efficiency cycle includes carried-heat partial gasification, compressed air heating in a fluidized bed immersed air heater followed by a combustor and the heat recovery of gas turbine exhaust used as the combustion air for the differential-velocity atmospheric circulating fluidized bed (DFBC). Superheat steam is raised in the DFBC boiler. The comparison of results identifies the causes of performance difference between eight cases. Features of the cycle ensure a high coal conversion efficiency within current state of the art.
