Abstract:This paper presents an energy and exergy co-optimization method of integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) based on Fuzzy Supervisory Predictive Control (FSPC). Firstly, a green IGCC process is proposed which contains three principle couplings: air separation unit (ASU), heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) and CO2 capture/storage unit (CCS). From law of thermodynamics, using substance thermophysical parameters, the energy efficiency and exergy efficiency of IGCC are successively defined. The IGCC power station has features such as closed coupling, large time lag and non-linearity, however, faster response speed and lower overshoot are always the unremitting pursuits. Therefore, the Fuzzy Supervisory Predictive Control (FSPC) method is proposed to implement robust control under complex disturbances by pre-considering unmeasurable disturbance and measurable disturbance. The fuzzy rules extracted from historical bigdata are employed in supervisory layer to make the precise control decisions. Finally, the energy and exergy co-optimization model is built and solved for higher efficiency and economic effectiveness. Taking the large-scale (300MW) IGCC for example, after using FSPC, the efficiency of water recovery is increased from 40.7% to 62.1% with the ratio of 52.6% because of waste water recovery (WWR) system. The net efficiency of proposed IGCC system is increased from 37.6% to 41.7% with the ratio of 10.9%. The exergy efficiency of IGCC system is increased from 36.5% to 39.2% with the ratio of 7.4%. The proposed method has great significance for the energy-saving and Near-zero emissions (NZEC) IGCC with high safety and robust control under supercritical (SC) or ultra-super critical (USC) state.

Abstract:Owing to the growing environmental concerns, super-critical and ultra-supercritical coal-fired power plants dominate the electricity generation with the demand of near-zero air pollutant emission in China. Therefore, it is highly expected to assess the environmental impact and optimize the design at global and local levels. Exergoenvironmental analysis is a valid approach to investigate the formation of environmental impacts (EIs) associated with energy conversion systems at the component level. It generates information crucial for designing systems with a lower overall environmental impact, based on life cycle assessment (LCA) and exergy analysis. A 600 MW supercritical coal-fired system with and without dust, SO2 and NOx mitigation controls was analyzed. Heat transfer in the boiler, condenser(CND), low pressure cylinder(LP), air preheater(APH) show high potential to decrease the environmental impact due to high exergy destructions. The deaerator (DEA), induced draft fan(IDF), forced draft fan(FDF) should be focussed on construction design and manufacturing optimization. Purification units reveal high benefit for reducing EI produced by coal combustion, but there is a large space for the EI saving for it. The specific EI of electricity in China is much greater than European.

Abstract:Supercritical CO2 (sCO(2)) power system has been investigated by many scholars due to its attractive advantages of higher efficiency, compact system structure and eco-friendly working fluid. In this paper, some preliminary conceptual exploration about performance improvement on sCO(2) power system by integrating with two types of absorption power generation (APG) systems are conducted. Parameter analysis, genetic algorithm (GA) optimization and exergy analysis are carried out quantitatively for the proposed combined sCO(2)/APG systems based on the self-built simulation platform from the viewpoints of thermodynamics and economics. Parameter analysis results reveal that there exist optimal compressor pressure ratio to maximize the thermal efficiency or minimize the total product unit cost. Higher turbine inlet temperature and lower absorber temperature could contribute to the overall system performance. In addition, compared with the stand-alone sCO(2 )system, improvements of 5.98% and 5.07% in thermodynamics as well as promotion of 4.24% and 2.19% in economics can be obtained for sCO(2)/LiBr-H2O system and sCO(2)/ammonia water system, respectively. Furthermore, exergy analyses show that the main exergy destructions occur in the reactor and the cooler and the proposed combined sCO(2)/APG system could effectively reduce around half of the exergy destruction within the cooler of the stand-alone sCO(2) system.

Abstract:Due to the advantages such as high efficiency of electricity generation and high degree of cleanness, Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) power plant represents the direction of development for all fired power plants in China. This essay analyzes the technical requirements and economic attributes of the Chinese IGCC power plant of 400 MW level in plan. It is both necessary and possible for China to develop IGCC power plant with the technical foundation available. The biggest obstacle facing the development of IGCC is the huge amount of investment and high cost of electric generation. According to the sensitivity analysis, investment is the main element affecting the cost of power generation. Though it is difficult to control investment in the present phase, with restricting elements like technique and facility, smooth operation of the project could still be ensured through government’s preferential policies toward IGCC power plant, such as setting price for clean electricity, offering investment subsidies and preferential taxes. The premise for such policies is a determined and consistent development strategy of IGCC technique.

Abstract:CO2 capture is a promising way of offloading the impact of fossil fuels on global warming. Although various techniques have been proposed for CO2 capture, the main obstacle remains the economic performance. This paper focuses on designing a novel CO2 capture process, the hybrid membrane-cryogenic system, and optimizing its economic performance. The optimization of such a hybrid separation system involves synthesis of separation sequences, design of heat exchanger networks, and optimization of compression/expansion networks. Each of the subsystems is a complex system, and there are tight interactions between the subsystems. Therefore, it is challenging to synthesize these subsystems. To optimize this complex hybrid carbon capture process, a novel two-step approach is proposed. The separation sequence, as well as energy consumption, is optimized first. Then, the remaining heat exchanger network is synthesized with flowsheet optimization simultaneously. An iterative procedure is proposed to build a solution pool, which serves as a bridge between the two steps. In addition, a discrete cutting method and a piecewise approximation approach are introduced to improve the reliability and validity of the two-step model. Case studies show that the optimized hybrid system can improve the economic performance for both precombustion and postcombustion carbon capture cases. It is especially suitable for precombustion CO2 capture, where 33% of operating cost reduction and 28% total annualized cost reduction are achieved.

Abstract:The development history of IGCC technology in the world during the past 30 years was reviewed,and the background of the second high tide for developing IGCC technology nowadays was analyzed by author.According to the experiences and lessons for developing this technology accumulated around the world,author pointed out that the development of such an advanced technology should be strongly encouraged by our government authority.It is needed that the government coordinates relationship between related branches to provide the supports on technology and policy for guiding its development in the way of steady and scientific.

Abstract:With the increasing energy demand, it is essential to improve the utilization of traditional energy sources. Coal is still the mainstay of the Chinese energy market, especially in power generation. The IGCC offers significant advantages in terms of power efficiency and environmental protection. However, conventional IGCC uses oxygen as the gasification medium, posing serious economic challenges. To address this challenge, in this study, the overall system process for the IGCC systems using air-blown gasification is constructed by Aspen Plus. To explore the potential of the thermal performance of the air-blown gasification IGCC system, the operating parameters and process flows are improved. The energy and exergy analysis of the whole system using the advanced process is carried out and compared with the oxygen gasification IGCC. Optimal operating parameters and technical parameters are determined, and the gasifier is optimized. The results show that the system efficiency increased by 3.17%, and the exergy efficiency increased by 3.09%. Although the integrated gas turbine process does not offer obvious advantages, it is more compatible with the current gas turbine in terms of flow rate. The utilization of a high-pressure reheat gas turbine results in a 2.52% increase in system efficiency. The implementation of high-pressure reheat gas turbines and hot gas desulfurization can improve the thermal performance of the system. The air-blown gasification IGCC with this process has the highest power supply efficiency of 52.80%. It presents an improvement of 3.69% compared with oxygen gasification. The exergy loss in the cooling and cleaning module and the gas turbine module is significantly reduced. The heat efficiency of the air-blown gasification IGCC is 3.60% higher, and the effective energy in the system is fully utilized. It provides some heuristic ideas for the clean and efficient utilization of coal resources.

Abstract:Using software GT PRO, complete IGCC systems, equipped with different gasifiers, are studied by simulation. The effects of some representative gasifying technologies on the technical and economical performance of IGCC power plants are analyzed and compared. Results show, that the way coal is fed, has a great bearing on both the system's efficiency and its price per unit. This may serve as a reference for selecting gasifiers in IGCC systems.

Abstract:In order to increase the overall efficiency of IGCC, integration of the steam-side subsystem in IGCC is attracting more and more attention with the development of technology and experience achievement. The existing design methods are generally the simulation and analysis of their performance under the conditions of the given steam subsystem configuration. This usually results in only partial optimization. In this paper, a new idea is presented and a new method––simultaneous optimization of configuration and parameters––is investigated and used for IGCC steam subsystem. These are expected to overcome the shortcomings of the previous ones, adapt to various IGCC technological demand for steam subsystem and realize better cascade utilization of exhaust heat from gas turbine. The optimization model for steam subsystem is established, based on modular modeling idea of general system integration. Case study shows that the synthesis optimization method and model presented in this paper are valuable for steam subsystem performance analysis and optimization design of IGCC.

Abstract:Ion transfer membrane (ITM) technology has the potential to lower down energy penalty of air separation unit (ASU) and consequently promote net efficiency of an integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) power plant. This numerical investigation sets up the system model of an IGCC power plant integrated with ITM ASU, aiming to examine influences of air extraction rate (0.4-1.0), oxygen separation rate (30-90%) and operation temperature (800-900 degrees C) on IGCC performances. The advantages of ITM technology over cryogenic ASUs are also evaluated under optimized operation parameters and similar system boundary conditions. Simulation results indicated that increasing air extraction rate and oxygen separation rate was beneficial to promote IGCC system net efficiency and reduce auxiliary power consumption rate. Temperature variation had much less influences on system performance, although a minor drop of net efficiency was observed with increasing operation temperatures. The optimized operation parameters were identified as: air extraction rates of 0.8-1.0, oxygen separation rates of 70-90% and operation temperature of 800 degrees C. Comparing with the cases using low pressure and high pressure cryogenic ASUs, IGCC net efficiency was increased by 1.0 and 0.6% point when adopting an ITM ASU. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Abstract Compared with a pulverized coal power plant, the integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) has several advantages, including, among others better environmental performance and low CO 2 capture cost. Hot/warm CO 2 removal from syngas has also been a subject of research due to its potentially higher thermal efficiency. In this study, we proposed a generic adsorption based hot/warm CO 2 removal process for IGCC power plants. Through analyses of the proposed generic process we have demonstrated that higher temperature of the hot/warm CO 2 removal process will results in larger heat of adsorption, which in turns may increase energy consumption of the process. Under most of the operating temperature range, hot/warm CO 2 removal process will lead to more electricity loss compared to the baseline Selexol process. However, if the adsorption step takes place at a temperature close to or higher than the highest steam temperature in steam cycle, our analysis indicates that the process may lead to minimal electricity loss. The study also provided some other insights into the pathways for hot/warm CO 2 removal process to improve its energy performance through process and sorbent designs. Graphical Abstract

Abstract:This paper employs ASPEN PLUS software to set the process flowsheet for integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) power plant based on coal water slurry gasification. The aim of this study is to examine the influences of CO2 capture on plant performances. Firstly, the effects of CO2 capture on power output and efficiency were separately analyzed for two types of raw syngas pretreatment, i.e., water quenching and sensible heat recovery. Then adaptability of syngas water quenching and sensible heat recovery in IGCC power plants was evaluated under CO2 capture conditions. The results reveal that CO2 capture would have less negative effects on IGCC performance when adopting syngas water quenching.

Abstract:Integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) is considered as a viable option for low emission power generation and carbon dioxide sequestration. As a part of the process of IGCC plant design and development, modelling and simulation study of the whole IGCC process is important for thermodynamic performance evaluation, study of carbon capture readiness and economic analysis. The work presented in the paper is to develop such a whole system model and simulation platform. A simplified dynamic model for the IGCC process is developed, in which Texaco gasifier is chosen to give the basic representation for the IGCC process. The chemical equilibriums principle is used to predict the syngas contents in the modelling procedure. The influences of key parameters to regulate the input such as oxygen/coal ratio and water/coal ratio to syngas generation are studied. The simulation results are validated by comparing with the industry data provided by the Lu-nan fertilizer factory. Water-shift reactor, gas turbine and heat recovery steam-generation modules are modelled to study the dynamic performance with respect to the variation from the input of syngas stream. The simulation results reveal the dynamic changes in the plant outputs, including gas temperature, power output and mole percentages of hydrogen and carbon dioxide in the syngas. The process dynamic responses with three types of coal inputs are studied in the paper and their dynamic variation trends are presented via the simulation results.

Abstract:The integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) technology is known for its efficient utilization of energy resources and high comprehensive energy utilization efficiency. However, the exhaust emissions from an IGCC power plant still contain a significant amount of carbon dioxide (CO2), which has a detrimental impact on the environment. Therefore, it is necessary to capture CO2 and reduce its emissions in IGCC to reduce the environmental impact. Accordingly, this study developed an integrated model for capturing CO2 emissions from a 250 MW IGCC system. After establishing the model, sensitivity analysis was conducted to obtain the optimal parameters for the MDEA absorption technology, followed by an analysis of energy consumption. Additionally, the operational parameters of the coal gasification unit were optimized to mitigate the elevated energy consumption linked to the CO2 capture unit. It turns out that the original gasification system has an energy consumption rate of 57.6%, whereas the optimized system achieves a significantly reduced to 42.8%, resulting in a notable improvement in the energy efficiency of the gasification unit by 10.2%. Additionally, the exergy efficiency of the gasification process is improved by 6.4%. This research paradigm showcases the opportunity to significantly improve the sustainability and economic feasibility of IGCC technology.
