Abstract:A high-speed powerful solenoid using magnetostrictive material, Terfenol-D has been designed and built. The mechanical structure design, lump parameter electrical-mechanical dynamic model and control method were presented. The prototype of the solenoid is 55 mm in diameter and 60 mm long. Experiment data state that the magnetostrictive valve on-time is 0.2 ms, off-time is 0.5 ms, output force is 1000 N, and can get 1500 μm through the mini-amplifier. Experiment and computer simulation show that variable structure control method has more advantage than the PID control method for the solenoid. Compared with conventional solenoid, the magnetostrictive solenoid has more rapid dynamic response and can provide higher blocking forces. It may have prospective application in high-speed and large-flux hydraulic system.

Abstract:To optimize the electromagnetic performance of giant magnetostrictive transducer, the effects of coil's geometry and magnetic circuit components on the transducer's magnetic field characteristics and displacement output were studied, and the magnetic circuit's loss and the gap's magnetic permeability were also analyzed. The appropriate coil structure parameters were presented, and an optimized design scheme was proposed in which pure iron with high magnetic permeability was attached to both ends of the giant magnetostrictive material (GMM) to reduce loss. Both finite element simulation and experimental analysis were conducted to study the effects of different magnet circuit design schemes on the transducer's performance. The results indicate that attaching pure iron to both ends of the GMM can enhance the working magnetic field, reduce the magnetic flux leakage, and increase the displacement output with reduced current in coil, thus improve the thermal condition of the transducer.

Abstract:A 100-T pulsed magnet with a bore size of 12 mm has been designed at the Wuhan National High Magnetic Field Center (WHMFC). This magnet consists of three coils. The inner coil will be wound from high-strength CuNb wire. The middle and the outer coils will be wound from copper wire. All the three coils will be reinforced with Zylon/epoxy composite. In order to increase the efficiency of the inner and the middle coils and reduce the coupling between them and the outer coil, the inner and the middle coils have a height of 400 mm, which is shorter than the 500-mm height of the outer coil. The inner and the middle coils are driven by 1.6- and 11-MJ capacitor banks, and the outer coil is driven by the combination of a 100-MJ/100-MW pulse generator and the 1000-V lead-acid battery system. At the peak field, the three coils contribute 47, 37, and 16 T, respectively.
The Conceptual Optimal Design of a 300MJ High Temperature Superconducting Magnet

Abstract:The conceptual optimal design of a 300 MJ high temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet using Bi2223/Ag tapes has been conducted. In order to reduce the stray field of the HTS magnet, a toroidal configuration was proposed. The proposed configuration was optimized by using an improved particle swarm optimization method under a lot of constraints such as the storage energy, the volume of the superconductor, the stray field and so on. After extensive studies, a toroidal coil composed of 16 solenoid coils was determined. Finally, FEM was used to validate the storage energy and the magnetic field of all the optimal configurations.

Abstract:High temperature superconducting (HTS) bulks or stacks of coated conductors (CCs) can be magnetized to become trapped field magnets (TFMs). The magnetic fields of such TFMs can break the limitation of conventional magnets (<2 T), so they show potential for improving the performance of many electrical applications that use permanent magnets like rotating machines. Towards practical or commercial use of TFMs, effective in situ magnetization is one of the key issues. The pulsed field magnetization (PFM) is among the most promising magnetization methods in virtue of its compactness, mobility and low cost. However, due to the heat generation during the magnetization, the trapped field and flux acquired by PFM usually cannot achieve the full potential of a sample (acquired by the field cooling or zero field cooling method). The multi-pulse technique was found to effectively improve the trapped field by PFM in practice. In this work, a systematic study on the PFM with successive pulses is presented. A 2D electromagnetic-thermal coupled model with comprehensive temperature dependent parameters is used to simulate a stack of CCs magnetized by successive magnetic pulses. An overall picture is built to show how the trapped field and flux evolve with different pulse sequences and the evolution patterns are analyzed. Based on the discussion, an operable magnetization strategy of PFM with successive pulses is suggested to provide more trapped field and flux. Finally, experimental results of a stack of CCs magnetized by typical pulse sequences are presented for demonstration.

Abstract:High temperature superconducting (HTS) bulks can be magnetized to become powerful trapped field magnets (TFMs), which are promising for high-performance electrical applications. To magnetize such TFMs, pulsed field magnetization (PFM) is supposed to substitute field cooling (FC) to provide in situ magnetization. However, the heat generation during PFM, which reduces the trapped field has always been an issue, so numerical simulation of the process is important to provide optimal magnetization strategies. In this paper, HTS bulks magnetized by PFM are simulated with an axisymmetric electromagnetic-thermal coupled model based on H-formulation. Influences of important yet difficult-to-characterize parameters of HTS bulks including n values in the E-J Power Law and B0 in the Kim's Law are investigated. Furthermore, controlled magnetic density distribution coils (CMDCs) which generate a non-uniform field are suggested to further improve the trapped field of HTS bulks compared to split coils proposed previously.

Abstract:Persistent Current Switches (PCS) which switch between superconducting and resistive states enrich the operation scenarios of superconducting magnets. A commonly used thermally controlled PCS fits DC current feeding but too slow for AC or pulsed current feeding for the magnets. Thanks to the high thermal stability of high temperature superconductors, pulsed current feeding becomes feasible with a practical over current PCS control strategy, which is verified through experiments on a non-insulated coil made of ReBCO tapes in this work, leading to a novel charging procedure for superconducting magnets. The structure is simple and straightforward, and has a prospect in the field of excitation and field supplement for a superconductingmagnet.

Abstract:The compression of the electron beam and the efficiency of the gyrotron are strongly dependent on the magnetic field. Especially for gyrotrons using pulsed magnets, the pulsed magnet provides a strong magnetic field to the gyrotron but also brings some new problems in magnet design and testing. In this article, we take the pulsed magnet design and test of an 800-GHz gyrotron as an example. Considering the needs of working at room temperature and withstanding severe electromagnetic forces, the treatment of magnet strength in design and fabrication is introduced in detail. The design and measurement of the magnetic field distribution are also presented. Finally, a pulsed magnet that can generate a 30-T magnetic field and can be repeatedly discharged is designed and experimentally verified.

Abstract:Compared with other energy storage devices, LIQHY-SMES (the combination of liquid hydrogen and superconducting magnetic energy storage) systems have obvious advantages in conversion efficiency, response speed, energy storage capacity and have a bright prospect in power systems. Superconducting magnets are the electromagnetic energy storage units and the core components of LIQHY-SMES systems. In this paper, the electromagnetic optimized design of a toroidal D-shaped magnet applied in the 5 MW LIQHY-SMES system is completed by COMSOL and MA-TLAB co-simulation. In addition, the basic cryogenic system and quench protection system of the magnet are studied. Aimed at the difficulty of modeling and calculating the multi-physics field behaviors for toroidal D-shaped SMES magnets due to their complex structure, a method of electromagnetic-thermal-mechanical decoupling analysis is proposed, and the magnetic field distribution, AC loss, temperature rise and stress distribution during the operation of the designed magnet are studied. By this means, the stability of the designed magnet is verified, which provides a reference for toroidal D-shaped magnets to the multi-physics behaviors analyze.

Abstract:High temperature superconducting (HTS) stacks of coated conductors (CCs) can work as strong trapped field magnets (TFMs) and show potential in electrical applications. Pulsed field magnetization (PFM) is a practical method to magnetize such TFMs, but due to heat generation during the dynamic process, it cannot achieve a trapped field as high as field cooling can. In this work, we construct a 2D electromagnetic-thermal coupled model to simulate stacks of HTS CCs with realistic laminated structures magnetized by PFM. The model considers temperature and anisotropic magnetic field dependent Jc of HTS and other temperature dependent thermal and electrical material properties. Based on the model, a configuration of controlled magnetic density distribution coils is suggested to improve the trapped field compared to that obtained by ordinary solenoids.

20 T Dipole Magnet Based on Hybrid HTS/LTS Cos-Theta Coils with Stress Management

Abstract:This paper presents the design concept of the dipole magnet with 50 mm aperture, 20 T nominal field and 13% margin based on a six-layer cos-theta (CT) hybrid coil design. Due to the high stresses and strains in the coil at high field, Stress Management (SM) elements are implemented in the CT coil geometry. The results of magnet magnetic analysis are presented and discussed. The key parameters of this design are compared with the parameters of similar magnets based on block-type and canted cos-theta coils.

A concise 40 T pulse magnet for condensed matter experiments

Abstract:There is a growing interest in using pulsed high magnetic field as a controlling parameter of physical phenomena in various scientific disciplines, such as condensed matter physics, particle physics, plasma physics, chemistry and biological studies. We devised a concise and portable pulsed magnetic field generator that produces a 40 T field with a pulse duration of 2 ms. It is assembled using only off-the-shelf components and a homemade coil that leverages small computers, Raspberry Pi, and Python codes. It allows for straightforward modification for general purposes. As working examples, we show representative applications in condensed matter experiments of magnetoresistance, magnetization, and magnetostriction measurements for graphite, NdNi$_{2}$P$_{2}$, and NdCo$_{2}$P$_{2}$, respectively, with the maximum magnetic field of 41 T and the lowest temperature of 4.2 K.

Abstract:A dual-coil magnet aimed at generating 90 T (at the center of the bore) has been developed at the Wuhan National High Magnetic Field Center. This magnet consists of two coils nested coaxially. The inner coil is wound with eight layers of 2.8 mm × 4.3 mm CuNb microcomposite wire developed in China; the bore diameter is 12 mm and the outer diameter 135 mm. The outer coil was wound directly on the inner coil with 12 layers of 4 mm × 8 mm soft copper wire. All the conductor layers were reinforced by Zylon/epoxy composite. The inner and outer coils were driven by a 1.6-MJ capacitor bank and by 11 1-MJ modules, respectively. At the voltage of 15.9 kV for the inner coil and 22.9 kV for the outer coil, the inner and outer coils produced peak fields of 46.6 T and 39.7 T, respectively, which gave a total field of 86.3 T. We present details of the design, manufacture, and test of the magnet.

Abstract:As compared to traditional magnets, permanent magnets can effectively reduce energy consumption and eliminate the impact of current ripple and the water cooling system on beam current. The use of permanent magnets in accelerators has become a new trend as permanent magnet technology has advanced. In HALF (Hefei Advanced Light Facility), we have designed a permanent magnet based on the quadrupole magnet, and the central magnetic field strength of the permanent magnet can be adjusted, indicating that single or multiple permanent magnets can be developed to replace different sizes of quadrupole magnets in accelerators, greatly improving systematization. The magnet's mechanical design has been finalized, and the prototype of the permanent magnet will be manufactured and tested soon.

Abstract:HTS diploe Magnet is an important part in Heavy-Ion Advanced Research Facility(HIAF).It can provide uniform and fast-cycled field for ion deflection.In this paper,a demonstration high temperature superconducting (HTS) dipole magnet was designed,built and assembled.This demonstration magnet was mainly constructed by racetrack coils installed with E -shape iron yokes.The magnetic flux density reached 1.0T when the operation current was 30A,as was predicted by the FE simulation.The DC test result shows the critical current of the coils,the center gap magnetic field on the operating current and the maximum operation current of the magnet.The AC test result shows that the equivalent field ramping rate of HTS magnet exceeds 18.2T/s.

Abstract:We studied a pulsed field magnetization (PFM) of bulk HTS assembled into a synchronous motor as a field-pole. The PFM is essential to apply bulk HTS inside the machine as a practical technique. In the present study, we developed a PFM technique that is a usage of Controlled Magnetic density Distribution Coil (CMDC). The coil is composed of inner vortex coil and outer solenoid. We successfully obtained the trapped flux density with 1.3 T by the step-wise cooling method with CMDC at 38 K in the motor. The bulk was cooled by a condensed neon. In addition, we studied the PFM for Gd-bulk of 140 mm diameter. By using the CMDC, we obtained the trapped flux density distribution with regular shape. In this paper we report these advanced PFM techniques for a practical machinery applications.

Abstract:A bidirectional repeating long pulse magnet system for room temperature magnetic refrigerator has been designed in Wuhan National High Magnetic Field Center. By using ac power capacitor bank and anti-parallel thyristors, a bidirectional magnetic field is generated and the classical crowbar is removed for maximizing the utilization of energy. For the sake of long pulse width and repeating pulse application, a special rapid cooling magnet with large inductance of 87 mH and internal cooling channels is designed. It has a 60 mm bore and 16 layers, with 7 internal cooling channels built by annular sticks between layers. Finally, the proposed bidirectional repeating long pulse magnet system with bidirectional magnetic field of + 6.2 T/ -3.8 T and pulse width of 193 ms has been successfully achieved. The design and implementation of the proposed repeating pulsed magnet system will be presented in detail in the paper.

Abstract:The transient electromagnetic phenomena and solidification of Al-Cu alloy under a typical pulsed magnetic field (PMF) are numerically studied by a two-dimensional (2D) axisymmetric model. The results show that the magnetic flux density, eddy current density, Lorentz force and Joule heat all inherit the instantaneous and intermittent feature of the PMF, and their amplitudes and phases decrease with the increasing distance to the side surface of the ingot. The Lorentz force appears alternatively as pressure force and pull force mainly in the radial direction. Forced convection is induced in the liquid metal, and the flow field is composed of a clockwise vortex and a counter-clockwise vortex in the meridian plane of the ingot. The melt velocity is accompanied with a dramatic periodic oscillation. The temperature field in the ingot with the PMF tends uniform due to the mixing effect of the melt flow. However, the convection is damped soon after the solidification starts due to the increasing penetration resistance, and the temperature field gradually approximates that in the case without the PMF.

Abstract:Geomagnetic storm in the magnetosphere of the earth is significant in understanding the basic space plasma processes such as wave-particle interaction and predicting the space weather related to the human activity. Due to defects involved in the space observation and theoretical modeling, it is urgent to investigate it in the laboratory based on a simulation facility. To that end, two circular magnetic perturbation magnets are proposed in the SPERF (Space Plasma Environment Research Facility) to generate the magnetic disturbances with different characteristic times for studying the response of the inner magnetosphere to the geomagnetic storm. The paper focuses on the engineering design and construction of the magnets. The scaling relation for geomagnetic storm simulation is presented, serving as the design requirement of the magnets. Then, starting with giving the designed parameters of the magnets satisfying the requirement and analyzing the crucial issues facing their engineering design, the design results, manufacturing procedure, and test results are presented, with emphasize on the measures to improve the insulation, vacuum degree, and plasma quality. Then, mechanical analyses are done to evaluate the strength of the supporting mechanism of the magnets under the magnetic force and torque caused by the possible deviation from the concentricity with the dipole magnet. Afterwards, a connection scheme is designed to make the coaxial cables connecting to the magnet's leads go through the vacuum vessel considering the constraints of the magnetic-force impact, thermal burden, and motion requirement. One of the magnetic perturbation magnets has been installed in the SPERF, and is now being tested combined with the pulsed power supply.

Design and Characterization of A High-Power Induction Module at Megahertz Repetition Rate Burst Mode

Abstract:The special design considerations for a unique high-power multiple-pulse induction module at megahertz repetition rate burst mode are presented and a prototype triple-pulse induction module has been constructed to verify the engineering feasibility of such a scheme. In the prototype module, three single pulses produced independently by three Marx-charged Blumlein pulse forming lines are isolated and merged by six high-voltage rectifier diodes. Experiments conducted with an iron-based metallic glass (1K101) test induction cell demonstrate that a train of three ∼250kV pulses separated by 800ns can be obtained in the induction gap of the cell without resetting the magnetic cores between pulses. A pulse with a rise time of 35ns, ±1% flat top of 60ns, and full-width at half-maximum of 120ns was obtained when tested with a formal linear induction cell and finely tuned. It appears that nonlinear characterization of magnetic cores results in an increase in magnetization current and voltage drop pulse by pulse; the distortion of voltage waveform is not observed in the module if the voltage-seconds of the magnetic cores are sufficient. Because 1K101 metallic glass core has two times the equivalent flux swing of that of NiZn ferrite, metallic glass is advantageous for designing a compact multiple-pulse induction cell. The maximum amplitude of the voltage reversal is about 26% of that of the incident pulse when the cores are saturated.
