Abstract:This paper presents a technical overview for low-noise switched reluctance motor (SRM) drives in electric vehicle (EV) applications. With ever-increasing concerns over environmental and cost issues associated with permanent magnet machines, there is a technical trend to utilize SRMs in some mass production markets. The SRM is gaining much interest for EVs due to its rare-earth-free characteristic and excellent performance. In spite of many advantages compared with conventional adjustable-speed drives, SRMs suffer from torque ripple and radial distortion (and thus noise and vibration) by their nature. Therefore, for high-performance vehicle applications, it is important and urgent to optimize the SRM system to overcome the drawbacks of the noise and vibration. In order to present clear solutions to the acoustic noise in SRMs, this paper starts by analyzing the mechanism of the radial vibration and torque ripples inherent in the motors, and then focuses on the state-of-the-art technologies to mitigate the radial force and torque ripples. It highlights two categories for low-noise SRMs, including the machine topology improvement and control strategy design for radial vibration mitigation and torque ripple reduction. Advanced technologies are reviewed, classified, and compared accordingly. In addition to these methodologies, the schemes that have been developed by authors are also presented and discussed. Finally, the research status on this topic is summarized and forecast research hotspots are presented. It is our intention that this paper provides the guidance on performance improvements for low-noise SRM drives in EV applications.

Abstract:Abstract This paper presents a review on the recent research and technical progress of electric motor systems and electric powertrains for new energy vehicles. Through the analysis and comparison of direct current motor, induction motor, and synchronous motor, it is found that permanent magnet synchronous motor has better overall performance; by comparison with converters with Si-based IGBTs, it is found converters with SiC MOSFETs show significantly higher efficiency and increase driving mileage per charge. In addition, the pros and cons of different control strategies and algorithms are demonstrated. Next, by comparing series, parallel, and power split hybrid powertrains, the series–parallel compound hybrid powertrains are found to provide better fuel economy. Different electric powertrains, hybrid powertrains, and range-extended electric systems are also detailed, and their advantages and disadvantages are described. Finally, the technology roadmap over the next 15 years is proposed regarding traction motor, power electronic converter and electric powertrain as well as the key materials and components at each time frame.

Abstract:The era of the electrification of vehicle drivelines is rapidly approaching. Motors are capable of providing controls with response and accuracy two orders of magnitude greater than internal combustion engines. It is also relatively simple to design a driveline capable of independently controlling the driving force at each wheel by providing compact motors throughout the vehicle. Although the potential of such driving force distribution control in improving vehicle dynamic performance has been a serious topic of research since even before the current wave of driveline electrification, the complex mechanisms required to realise these controls have prevented mass adoption. However, it seems that these research efforts are finally reaching a stage where practical adoption might be possible. This state-of-the-art review examines the background and most recent research related to vehicle dynamics control, particularly controls that use electrical drive units, and investigates the topics of interest and trends of a wide range of researchers. Subsequently, taking into account ongoing efforts to pair vehicle dynamics controls with electrical actuators, this review also discusses a novel control architecture that depart from control design methods formulated in the past by researchers across the field, and points the way toward the future of vehicle dynamics control research.

Abstract:The design principle of electric motors and drive systems for electric vehicles (EVs) is presented. Firstly, according to the EV demands on electric drive systems, the article discusses their effects on the vehicle performances covering acceleration, driving range and so on. Then it presents the design outline based on the experiences of four different EVs. Furthermore, some important design parameters of electric motors are listed and expatriated respectively, more design details are given. To minimise the effect of different driving cycles, a combined reference cycle, incorporating Japan 10.15 mode, US06 and UDDS, is derived for optimization. By employing the dynamic model and performing MATLAB simulation, the research work analyses the function of driving cycle, grade ability, and acceleration on EV electric motor parameters on the plots of torque-speed, and provides the detailed design process and method on how to decide the rated and maximum torque and power parameters. At last, the article presents some considerations for designing drive and control systems, such as control method and strategy, hardware and software EMC design. The conclusion is reached using a design flow chart of the whole design procedure.

Abstract:Electric motor is key part in electric vehicles including hybrid electric vehicle, fuel cell electric vehicle and battery electric vehicle. Wide torque-speed range and high reliability are needed of the motor applied in electric vehicles. Novel hybrid switched reluctance motor is developed. It combines features of robust as switched reluctance motor and that of high efficiency of permanent magnet motor. Flux strengthening and weakening control give large maximum torque and high speed to the motor drives. They are implemented by only simply controlling the magnitude and direction of the current in an additional coil in the motor. Rotor position is detected by the signal from stationary coils in the motor and rotor speed is calculated according to this signal. To test characteristics of the motor drives, an experimental bench is developed. It is easy to test four quadrants torque-speed and dynamic characteristics of the motor drives. The whole testing system is energy saving.

Abstract:The interest in electric traction has reached a very high level in recent decades; there is no doubt that electric vehicles have become among the main means of transport and will be the first choice in the future, but to dominate the market, a lot of research efforts are still devoted to this purpose. Electric machines are crucial components of electric vehicle powertrains. The bulk of traction drive systems have converged in recent years toward having some sort of permanent magnet machines because there is a growing trend toward enhancing the power density and efficiency of traction machines, resulting in unique designs and refinements to fundamental machine topologies, as well as the introduction of new machine classes. This paper presents the technological aspect of the different components of the electric powertrain and highlights the important information on the electric vehicle’s architecture. It focuses on a multi-criteria comparison of different electric motors utilized in the electric traction system to give a clear vision to allow choosing the adequate electrical motor for the desired application. The proposed comparative analysis shows that the induction motor better meets the major necessities of the electric powertrain, whereas the permanent magnet synchronous motor is nonetheless the most used by electric vehicle manufacturers.

Abstract:Direct-drive in-wheel motors have become an extremely attractive option for electric vehicles. Two kinds of motors are devised, Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) and Permanent-Magnet Flux-Modulated Motor (PMFM), respectively. Keeping the same back EMF, current density and copper loss, this paper analyzes and compares torque density, torque ripple, flux-weakening performance, speed range, loss and efficiency of the motors. The results indicate that compared to PMSM, PMFM has higher torque density, lower material cost and wider speed range, but with the penalty of lower efficiency, lower power factor and higher iron loss.

Abstract:With the rapid development of the semiconductor chip and precision machining industry, there is a growing demand for high-performance planar drive devices, leading to an increasing depth of research on planar motors. Variable reluctance planar motors, induction planar motors, permanent-magnet synchronous planar motors and DC planar motors are discussed in this paper along with their working principles and current research status. The theory of planar motors remains incomplete and immature despite the extensive research conducted by scholars and research institutions on crucial aspects like magnetic field analysis and electromagnetic force calculations. The objective of this paper is to provide a comprehensive review of the research and development status of planar motors in order to positively impact future advancements in this field.

Abstract:This article proposes a novel drive system, which is applied to a novel double-stator switched reluctance motor (DSSRM). This motor has five work modes due to its structural characteristics, but the drive system composed of a traditional power converter cannot fully realize the five work modes. The drive system composed of the novel power converter can realize five work modes of the motor. First, the operating states of the novel power converter drive system in the five work modes are analyzed in this article, and the steady-state and transient simulation analyses are carried out. In addition, this article also analyzes the fault of the novel drive system and designs remedies to improve its reliability. Finally, a prototype of the 16/18/16 structure is fabricated and the drive system is built. The practical feasibility of the drive system is verified through experiments, which lays a theoretical foundation for the popularization and application of DSSRM in the field of electric vehicle drive system.
