Abstract:Direct-drive in-wheel motors have become an extremely attractive option for electric vehicles. Two kinds of motors are devised, Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) and Permanent-Magnet Flux-Modulated Motor (PMFM), respectively. Keeping the same back EMF, current density and copper loss, this paper analyzes and compares torque density, torque ripple, flux-weakening performance, speed range, loss and efficiency of the motors. The results indicate that compared to PMSM, PMFM has higher torque density, lower material cost and wider speed range, but with the penalty of lower efficiency, lower power factor and higher iron loss.

Abstract:The wheel motor directly drives the vehicle, so its structural and electromagnetic design has some difficulties, and it will affect the performance improvement of the motor. Based on the exterior-rotor radial-flux permanent magnet (PM) wheel motor, we have done relative study on improving the motor performance from four aspects: magnetization direction and pole number; no-load air-gap flux density; no-load electromagnetic force (EMF); and flux insulation. Abstract:This paper evaluates a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) with concentrated fractional-slot winding and winding switching technology. Such a PMSM is an attractive solution for direct drive in-wheel motor, in which high power density and high efficiency over wide constant power range can be simultaneously achieved. Methods to design in-wheel PMSM with concentrated fractional-slot winding and winding switching technologies are discussed in this paper. A prototype design for a specific application is proposed.

Abstract:Nowadays, in-wheel drive mode is considered as one of the most promising modes for electric vehicles (EVs). The motor type plays a significant role in the vehicle performances. This article focuses on the performance between permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) and permanent magnet Vernier motor (PMVM) for in-wheel direct drive. First, the required performances are determined by the vehicle requirements. The prototypes of PMVM and PMSM are manufactured after the comparison. Then, the expressions of air-gap magnetic field harmonic, electromagnetic torque, and power factor are theoretically derived, where the parameter torque ratio is introduced to evaluate the torque ratio between PMVM and PMSM. Based on experiment, the back-electromotive force harmonics, cogging torque, maximum torque per ampere capability, flux-weakening capability, torque, efficiency, and power factor are compared and analyzed. Subsequently, the discussions are carried out, where the strength and weakness of two-type motors for in-wheel drive are concluded and the future prospects are suggested. Finally, the conclusions of two-type in-wheel motors are then extracted. This article aims at providing a reference for the exploration of alternating in-wheel motor types, which can promote the development of high-performance in-wheel drive system for EVs.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel outer rotor permanent-magnet vernier machine (PMVM) for in-wheel direct-drive application. The overhang structures of the rotor and flux modulation pole (FMP) are introduced. The soft magnetic composite (SMC) was adopted in the FMP overhang to allow more axial flux. The 3-D finite element analysis (FEA) was carried out to prove that the proposed machine can effectively utilize the end winding space to enhance the air-gap flux density. Hence the PMVM can offer 27.3% and 14.5% higher torque density than the conventional machine with no overhang structure and the machine with only rotor overhang structure, respectively. Nevertheless, the efficiency of the proposed machine is slightly lower than the conventional ones due to the extra losses from the overhang structures.

Abstract:The automobile industry is transforming into electrically driven vehicles. Electrical machines have evolved significantly during the past many years with direct current, induction, and synchronous motors of varying designs. In the electric vehicle (EV) automobile industry, some of the motors—induction motors (IM), permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM), brushless direct current motors (BLDCM), switched reluctance motors (SRM), and direct current (DC) series, shunt, and compound motors—have proven success. The advantages of PMSM have led to widespread adoption by manufacturers for commercially available electric vehicles. For EV motors, a widely frequency control method is deployed using a PWM input AC supply to the motor. However, controlling poles in conjunction with frequency controls has a potential in EV applications when additional torque is required at low speeds. The need to further improve the power densities of PMSM by utilizing lighter-weight materials and rotor and stator materials with higher magnetic saturation flux densities become a preferable choice for manufacturers when they try to optimize the costs of EVs. Additionally, the thermal efficiencies of motors continue to improve over time, and best practices in thermal management with air and liquid cooling become a significant factor in curbing energy consumption.
Design of disc in-wheel permanent magnet motor of electric vehicle

Abstract:In order to design disc in-wheel permanent magnet motor reasonably,the disc permanent magnet motor was used to study the wheel hub of electric vehicle.Based on the analysis in the characteristic requirements of the electric vehicle as well as the structure,material and features of the motor,the disc coreless permanent magnet synchronous motor(PMSM) was chosen as the in-wheel direct driving motor of the electric vehicle.In order to select the ideal motor parameters,the general dynamic performance of the electric vehicle was analyzed and calculated with a theoretical analysis method.Three main performance indexes including the maximum speed,acceleration time and maximum climbing ability of the electric vehicle,which determine the selection of the in-wheel motor,were discussed.According to the performance requirements of electric vehicle,the power,rotational speed and torque of the in-wheel motor were reasonably determined.And the main parameters of the in-wheel motor were determined.The present research provides the basis for the design of disc in-wheel motors.

Abstract:The advantages of permanent magnet synchronous motor make it reach the requirements of energy saving and environmental protection in railway traction.As the PM motor technology is becoming mature,the PM motor is sure to be widely used in railway traction system in future.This article proposed a permanent magnet synchronous motor which has a new type of rotor structure.And then,set up static simulation system of the PM motor based on Ansyis,and dynamic simulation system based on Magnet.At last,got the dynamic and static characteristics of the PM motor in the method of finite element analysis.The article is meaningful for optimization of PM motors.The result established the theoretical foundation for designing and optimizing relative products.

Abstract:Permanent-magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) have been widely used as the driving core in electric vehicles due to the high power/torque density and high efficiency. Recent years have witnessed a great effort on the vibration and noise of PMSMs in order to ensure the driving comfort. In this paper, the state of the art and recent progress of the electromagnetic vibration and noise of PMSMs for electric vehicles are presented, with emphasis on the induced mechanism, prediction method, suppression method, and sound quality. The future trends faced are also described.

Abstract:This paper proposed a novel design of In-Wheel motor. This design integrates the structure features of the outerrotor machine and flux-modulated magnetic gear, aimed to high torque density and high efficiency. Also the power factor is taken in account. Moreover, the relations between torque and structure parameters are investigated for the optimal design. The performance is confirmed using the FEM.

Abstract:Considering the higher harmonic distortion and higher torque ripple caused by traditional PWM strategy when applied to electric vehicles,a permanent magnet synchronous motor system based on space vector pulse width modulation strategy for electric vehicle application was designed.The principle of space vector pulse-width modulation is described in detail,and the vector control system for PMSM was set up in MATLAB/Simulink.The id=0 control strategy was used,and the system dynamic response was simulated.Digital signal processor (DSP) TMS320F28335 of TI company was used as the main control chip to set up the experimental platform.The system status and efficiency below the base speed was studied in experiments.The simulation results and the experimental results show a good consistency.It provides practical value to PMSM system design and analysis.

Abstract:As a potential candidate of high speed railway traction motor, interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) gains a lot of attention due to its inherent merits such as high torque density, excellent efficiency and superior controllability. This paper performs a design and comparative study of IPMSMs with five different rotor topologies, V shape, U shape, VV shape, VU shape and UU shape. The magnetic field, inductances, mechanical characteristics and short circuit fault performances of the five motors have been compared in detail. The most impressive find is that the U shape motor have the best fault tolerant ability. In addition, other aspects of the five motor will be carried out and a prototype of U shape motor will be proposed in the final paper.
Comparison of PMSMs with Different Rotor Structures for EV Application

Abstract:For electric vehicles (EVs), permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) are competitive owing to their high power factor, high efficiency and high power density. In this paper, four types of PMSMs with different rotor topologies are designed with the same motor main dimensions and the same amount of permanent magnet usage. First, the different PMSMs are compared in terms of their torque characteristics. The torque characteristic curves of the four motors are displayed with the control method i(d)=0 for surface-mounted PMSM (SPMSM) and Maximum Torque per Ampere (MTPA) for interior PMSM (IPMSM). It turns out that IPMSM has higher starting torque than SPMSM due to the reluctance torque. Among the three IPMSMs with different rotor structures, V-shape IPMSM and delta-shape IPMSM can provide higher output torque under the same current supply with the higher salient rate. More information on the no-load magnetic density, torque ripple, efficiency and demagnetization problem operated at the peak current is also provided and compared. Then the four PMSMs with the same peak current are further analyzed and compared on the flux-weakening speed-enlarge (FWSE) capability. The results show good FWSE capability for all of the four PMSMs owing to the large peak current. However, the torque of SPMSM in flux-weakening control region is slightly higher than the IPMSMs.

Abstract:This paper investigates a five-phase in-wheel outer-rotor permanent-magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) for electric vehicles (EVs). New materials like soft magnetic composite (SMC) and amorphous alloy are introduced and compared with conventional silicon steel machine scheme in the design process. A 12kW prototype is built and tested, and the corresponding experimental results including the machine performances in no-load, load and fault conditions are reported.

Abstract:Axial and radial flux permanent magnet motors are widely adopted in the in-wheel direct-drive application. The aim of this paper is to compare these two kinds of motors on torque and torque density considering constraints of in-wheel direct-drive application. Both motor size and cooling condition are taken into consideration. The key geometrical parameters including split ratio and aspect ratio are pointed out and analyzed. The critical aspect ratio is proposed to judge when the AFPM motor is better or not. The finite element method simulation is employed to verify the motor performance with a specific motor size.
