Abstract:An on-line incorporation of Cloud point extraction (CPE) without using a chelating reagent in flow injection analysis (FIA) with inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) has been developed for the determination of the trace metals (V(V), Cr(III), Mn(II), Co(II), Ni(II), and Cu(II)) in seawater. The enrichment (preconcentration) step is based on Cloud point extraction of the analytes with the non-ionic surfactant octylphenoxypolyethoxy-ethanol (Triton X-114). The main factors affecting separation/preconcentration were investigated and the optimized extraction conditions were established. Using optimal conditions and the consumption of 3.0-mL sample solution, the detection limits of the method were 70.7, 92.6, 46.3, 158, 212, 88.4 ng L-1 for V(V), Cr(III), Mn(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), respectively, and the relative standard deviations for seven replicate analyses (10 ng mL-1) of above six metals were 3.5, 4.2, 1.5, 3.2, 2.2, 2.5%, respectively. The enrichment factors were 14.9 for V(V), 20.1 for Cr(III), 16.2 for Mn(II), 17.5 for Co(II), 18.8 for Ni(II), and 15.9 for Cu(II), with a sample throughput of 20 samples h(-1). The developed method was applied to the determination of trace metals in real seawater samples and the recoveries for the spiked samples were in the range of 90.4-110.0%. The proposed method was also verified by the analysis of certified reference material GBW(E) 080040 Seawater and the determined values were in good agreement with the certified values.
