Abstract:In-memory computing arises as a novel computing paradigm aiming to overcome the memory wall bottleneck present in the conventional von Neumann architecture. By integrating the computation within the memory array, i.e., 6T CMOS SRAM array, in-memory computing blocks reduce the time- and energy-consuming data movement between the storage and processing cores, thus improving the energy efficiency and performance. Prior work [1] has focused on realizing the multi-bit multiplication and accumulation (MAC) in-memory operation by quantizing the analog discharge behavior associated with the SRAM bit cell. However, prior work realizes the multi-bit quantization by assuming that the discharge rate is linear to input voltage given a discharge interval. Such overlooking of the discharge nonlinearity associated with SRAM may hinder the design from practical multi-bit quantization. In this paper, we analyze the nonlinearity effect of the SRAM bit cell discharge and propose three optimization guidelines to address the challenges caused by nonlinear discharge. Simulation results validate our proposed methods.
A Parallel Interleaver Design for IDMA Systems

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a parallel interleaver design for interleave-division multiple-access (IDMA) systems. The advantages of our approach are the low complexity induced from an algebraic solution and the parallel processing with negligible performance degradations against random interleavers. It is specially suitable for parallel implementation of multiple user detections and decoding of IDMA signals, resulting in efficient improvements of system throughput. Simulation results show that the parallel interleavers perform as well as the random interleavers in an IDMA system.
Efficient Memory Partitioning for Parallel Data Access in FPGA via Data Reuse

Abstract:Parallelizing the memory accesses in a nested loop is a critical challenge to facilitate loop pipelining. An effective approach for high-level synthesis on field-programmable gate array is to map these accesses to multiple on-chip memory banks using a memory partitioning technique. In this paper, we propose an efficient memory partitioning algorithm with low overhead and low time complexity for parallel data access via data reuse. We find that for most applications in image and video processing, a large amount of data can be reused among different iterations of a loop nest. Motivated by this observation, we propose to cache reusable data using on-chip registers, organized as register chains. The nonreusable data are then separated into several memory banks by a memory partitioning algorithm. We revise the existing padding method to cover cases occurring frequently in our method wherein certain components of partition vector are zeros. Experimental results have demonstrated that compared with the state-of-the-art algorithms, the proposed method is efficient in terms of execution time, resource overhead, and power consumption across a wide range of access patterns extracted from applications in image and video processing. As for the testing patterns, the execution time is typically less than one millisecond. And the number of required memory banks is reduced by 59.7% on average, which leads to an average reduction of 78.2% in look-up tables, 65.5% in flip-flops, 37.1% in DSP48Es, and therefore 74.8% reduction in dynamic power consumption. Moreover, the storage overhead incurred by the proposed method is zero for most widely used access patterns in image filtering.

Abstract:The control IC play an important role in the inverter.An IC scheme for integrate of the invert is presented in this paper. The interleaving technique is applied in this IC to reduce the scale of the circuit. And the scheme is realized in an inverter prototype with the FPGA. The simulation and the experiment proved the system is stable.

Abstract:This paper proposes a new method which uses the Cross Gain Modulation (XGM) in the Semiconductor Optical Amplifier (SOA) to realize optical interleaving. Different from the traditional optical wavelength interleaving, the proposed optical interleaving is the interleaving of codes. Three modules and theoretical analysis are presented, and an experiment is designed to validate these kinds of optical interleaving modules.

Abstract:Global interconnect is a key potential bottleneck to the advancing performance of high-speed integrated circuits, especially for the large bit modular multiplier used in RSA systems. Architectural approaches to hardware implementation of RSA are presented. Specially, we extend the recently proposed distributed module cluster (DMC) micro-architecture to reduce the long latency calculating modular exponentiation. In the non-interleaving architecture, so-called NI-DMC, the bubble in the pipeline is eliminated by using longer processing cells and bringing forward certain critical signals. Experimental results show that the new approach significantly exceeds the DMC-based approach in performance, with a relatively small increase in area overhead.

Abstract:This paper presents an integrated methodology for high-performance integer multiplier design, which combines algorithmic partial product generation, logic synthesis, and physical layout into a unified process. The interconnect delay, which dominates the performance of a multiplier, is thoroughly considered in this integration. The special structures in the multiplier are utilized to reduce the high complexity of the holistic approach. Compared with multipliers generated by a state-of-the-art tool, the timing improvements of our results are 11% for a 16-bit multiplier, and 7.5% for a 32-bit multiplier.

Abstract:Coarse-grained reconfigurable architecture (CGRA) is a promising platform for loop acceleration, but existing software pipelining methods cannot achieve satisfactory performance on a fair number of imperfect nested loops, especially those with sibling inner loops. To tackle this problem, this paper makes 2 contributions: 1) a 2-level pipelining method with an effective II optimization strategy for the imperfect loops with sibling inner loops; 2) a novel kernel compression method to reduce oversize kernel. Experiment results show that our approach can achieve much higher performance than the state-of-the-art approaches at acceptable costs.
Efficient Memory Partitioning For Parallel Data Access Via Data Reuse

Abstract:In this paper, we propose an efficient memory partitioning algorithm for parallel data access via data reuse. Experimental results have demonstrated that compared with the state-of-the-art algorithms the proposed method can reduce the required number of memory banks by 59.8% on average. The corresponding resources for bank mapping is also significantly reduced. The number of LUTs is reduced by 78.6%. The number of Flip-Flops is reduced by 66.8%. The number of DSP48Es is reduced by 41.7%. Moreover, the storage overheads of the proposed method are zeros for most of the widely used access patterns in image filtering.

Abstract:In the emerging field of in-memory computing (IMC), this study proposes a dual-port Static Random Access Memory (SRAM) IMC architecture with the distinct capability of realizing XOR encryption (XORE), thus serving as a potential solution for the von Neumann bottleneck. Beyond providing traditional SRAM read and write operations, the proposed architecture carries out additional tasks such as multi-bit multiply and accumulate (MAC) and XOR accumulation (XORA). The architecture was simulated using a 28-nm Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor Process, demonstrating a minor standard deviation of 9.41 mV in bit line voltage at the SS process corner, as evidenced by Monte Carlo simulation. Energy expenditure for the MAC, XORA, and XORE, was found to be 1.65, 1.46, and 9.02 fJ/ops respectively at the TT process corner. Furthermore, the presented architecture showed considerable energy efficiency, with MAC, XORA, and XORE operations achieving energy efficiency values of 604.9, 682.7, and 110.8 TOPS/W respectively, at a supply voltage of 0.9 V at the TT process corner.

Abstract:The automatic design method for nested loops in ASIC design is described. The basic theory of the loop accelerator is presented. The backend design of the system, key technologies such as function unit allocation, module scheduling based on hardware cost, register file designing and data path generation are detailed. And the implementation of the function modules, main data structures and interfaces between modules are concretely given. The technology can provide reference for the design and building of high-performance hardware accelerator system.
An Optimized Linear Skewing Interleave Scheme For On-Chip Multi-Access Memory Systems

Abstract:An optimized linear skewing interleave scheme for on-chip multi-access memory systems is proposed in this paper. The proposed scheme can support simultaneous access of multiple subarray types of data elements in a 2-D data space with modulo addressing. 2pq (pq is the number of data elements in a subarray) memory modules are used without redundancy to save the on-chip memory. It uses linear skewing in the horizontal direction and uses nonlinear skewing in the vertical direction. Fast implementation method for the proposed scheme is also described. Results show that compared to previous linear skewing schemes, the proposed scheme can reduce 13.6%, on average, of the on-chip memory for cases of pq = 4 or 8 and reduce 35.5%, on average, of the external memory bandwidth for benchmark of motion estimation due to modulo addressing.
The timing control design of 65nm block RAM in FPGA

Abstract:The timing control design of 65 nm-based FPGA embedded Block RAM is presented. The strategy involves both the internal timing control system with test reliability considered and the status flag timing control of BRAM-based FIFO. With redundant circuits using dynamic feedback ideology, introducing an optional delay chain optimization and optimizing clock latency strategies, the strategy guarantees the reliability of timing control in BRAM. Meanwhile, optimizing speed makes the proposed design practical. The proposed BRAM can work in a variety of work environments correctly and maximize success rate of tapeout. It is 41.5%~59.2% deceasing in control delay than that in the structure of Ref [7]. BRAM with novel timing control design is designed with the speed of 400 MHz, which is 25% faster than that in Ref [9].

Abstract:A novel method to implement low-complexity Field Programmable Gate Array(FPGA) for(de)interleaver is proposed, which uses dual-proted memory of Xilinx FPGA.The consumption for resources to FPGA is reduced and the read-width is not necessarily equal to write-width.It is fitting to Multi-Bandwidth Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplex(MB-OFDM) Ultra-Wide Bandwidth(UWB) systems.Experimental results show the numbers of occupied slices are reduced by 46% and 78% for interleaver and deinterleaver respectively.

Abstract:Memory bandwidth has become a bottleneck that impedes performance improvement during the parallelism optimization of the datapath. Memory partitioning is a practical approach to reduce bank-level conflicts and increase the bandwidth on a field-programmable gate array. In this work, we propose a memory partitioning approach for multi-pattern data access. First, we propose to combine multiple patterns into a single pattern to reduce the complexity of multi-pattern. Then, we propose to perform data reuse analysis on the combined pattern to find data reuse opportunities and the non-reusable data pattern. Finally, an efficient bank mapping algorithm with low complexity and low overhead is proposed to find the optimal memory partitioning solution. Experimental results demonstrated that compared to the state-of-the-art method, our proposed approach can reduce the number of block RAMS by 58.9% on average, with 79.6% reduction in SLICEs, 85.3% reduction in LUTs, 67.9% in reduction Flip-Flops, 54.6% reduction in DSP48Es, 83.9% reduction in SRLs, 50.0% reduction in storage overhead, 95.0% reduction in execution time, and 77.3% reduction in dynamic power consumption on average. Meanwhile, the performance can be improved by 14.0% on average.
A New Interleaver Design Method for Turbo Code Using Parallel Decoding

Abstract:High-speed, low latency turbo codes require the parallel decoder architecture. As a key part of the decoder, the interleaver also should have a parallel structure that can avoid collisions in accesses to storage elements, and also keep excellent BER perfor-mance. In this paper we propose an interleaver structure that is very suitable for parallelization of turbo decoders, based on the struc-ture of A. Giuliett’s principle of collision-free interleaver design. It is shown that such an interleaver can be designed to have good BER performance as well. By this structure fast decoders with very low latency can be built, and the throughput of the decoder can be improved by about10 times. This design of interleaver can be used in the Beyond 3G system.
IPF: In-Place X-Filling to Mitigate Soft Errors in SRAM-Based FPGAs.

Abstract:SRAM-based Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) are vulnerable to Single Event Upsets (SEUs). We show that a large portion (40%-60% for the circuits in our experiments) of the total used LUT configuration bits are don't care bits, and propose to decide the logic values of don't care bits such that soft errors are reduced. Our approaches are efficient and do not change LUT level placement and routing. Therefore, they are suitable for design closure. For the ten largest combinational MCNC benchmark circuits mapped for 6-LUTs, our approaches obtain 20% chip level Mean Time To Failure (MTTF) improvements, compared to the baseline mapped by Berkeley ABC mapper. They obtain 3× more chip level MTTF improvements and are 128× faster when compared to the existing best in-place IPD algorithm.

Abstract:Processing-in-memory (PIM) provides massive parallelism with high energy efficiency and becomes a promising solution to the memory wall problem. Recently, the emerging metal-oxide resistive random access memory (RRAM) has shown its potential to design a PIM architecture. Several stateful logic operations, e.g., NOR and NAND, can be executed in parallel in an RRAM crossbar. Although previous works have designed some algorithms using the stateful logic, it is still under exploration how to fully exploit its potential high parallelism and design an asymptotically fast algorithm for a given function. In this work, we theoretically analyze the parallelism in an RRAM crossbar and design several asymptotically optimal arithmetic algorithms. In detail, we first propose the Single Instruction Multiple Lines (SIML) model to unify the stateful logic families and prove three lower bounds on the time complexity of a parallel RRAM algorithm. Then, we design three algorithms for integer addition functions with the stateful logic, guided by the lower bound analysis. All of them reach the time complexity lower bound. Finally, We make two extensions of the integer addition algorithms, supporting multiplication functions by decomposing them to additions and supporting the flex-point data type by proposing an exponent and mantissa update flow. Experimental evaluation shows that our integer algorithms achieves a speedup up to 13.79x over the previous RRAM algorithms. Our flex-point implementation achieves a 26.60x speedup and saves 73.68% energy compared to an ARM.

Abstract:We propose a class of interleavers for a novel deep neural network (DNN) architecture that uses algorithmically pre-determined, structured sparsity to significantly lower memory and computational requirements, and speed up training. The interleavers guarantee clash-free memory accesses to eliminate idle operational cycles, optimize spread and dispersion to improve network performance, and are designed to ease the complexity of memory address computations in hardware. We present a design algorithm with mathematical proofs for these properties. We also explore interleaver variations and analyze the behavior of neural networks as a function of interleaver metrics.
