Abstract:Studies on the non-halogen flame retardation and barrier modifications of PE at home are reviewed. The operating mechanisms of non-halogen flame retardant agent and barrier material in PE matrix composites are also discussed. In addition, the advantages and disadvantages of the modified PE are introduced.

Abstract:A new polyelectrolyte complex (PEC), containing phosphorus, nitrogen and carbon elements, has been prepared from positively charged polyethylenimine (PEI) and negatively charged phytic acid (PA). The PEC shows good performance in improving the thermo-oxidative stability and flame retardancy of pristine polypropylene (PP). When the content of PEC is 20 wt%, the char residues at 600 degrees C for the PP/PEC composites (PP/20PEC) are 10 wt% higher than those of pristine PP under an air atmosphere. Meanwhile, the peak heat release rate and total heat release of PP/20PEC are 314 W g(-1) and 7.7 kJ g(-1) lower than those of pristine PP, respectively. In comparison, PEI or PA is less effective than PEC in improving the thermo-oxidative stability and flame retardancy of pristine PP. Furthermore, the char residues of PP/20PEC are more full and compact, the surfaces of which are covered with a perfect intumescent layer. This work proposes a new guideline for designing and fabricating an intumescent flame retardant system.

Abstract:Zinc N,N′-piperazinebis(methylenephosphonic acid) (PPMPA-Zn) was melt blended with high-density polyethylene-g-maleic anhydride (HDPE-MA) to fabricate flame-retardant HDPE-MA/PPMPA-Zn composites. The thermal stability and flame retardancy of the composites were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and cone calorimetry. The incorporation of PPMPA-Zn did not appreciably increase the thermal stability of HDPE-MA, but the residual char content increased to 18.7% when the content of PPMPA-Zn reached 25 wt%. X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy tests showed that the residual char was composed mainly of Zn(PO3)2, Zn11(HPO 3)8(OH)6 and amorphous graphite. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images of samples collected after cone calorimetric tests also confirmed the formation of char in the sample with 25 wt% PPMPA-Zn loading in HDPE-MA, and the char layer acted as a compact and intact physical barrier in the condensed phase. Even at a loading as low as 5 wt% PPMPA-Zn, the peak value of the heat release rate (PHRR) was reduced by 38% compared with that of pure HDPE-MA. In contrast to other intumescent flame retardants, the introduction of PPMPA-Zn enhanced not only the flame retardancy but also the mechanical properties of HDPE-MA. For example, the yield strength and Young's modulus of HDPE-MA with 5 wt% PPMPA-Zn were 125% and 128% higher, respectively, than those of the pure HDPE-MA matrix. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:The development on halogen-free flame retardant used for polycarbonate at home and abroad in recent years,including phosphorus flame retardant,aromatic sulfonates flame retardant,silicone flame retardant,boron flame retardant,inorganic flame retardants,nano-retardant and other flame retardant systems is reviewed.The flame retardant mechanisms of these systems are briefly introduced,and their advantages and disadvantages are also evaluated.Finally,the research and development trend of flame retardant for PC is presented.
Enhanced Mechanical Property and Flame Retardancy of Halogen-Free Pe/Eva Composites Through Crosslinking and Carbon Fiber Inclusion

Abstract:Due to the exceptional flame retardancy, environmental protection, cost-effectiveness, and ease of processing, halogen-free flame-retardant polyethylene (PE) composites are attracting wide attention. However, the addition of halogen-free flame retardants usually leads to significantly decreased mechanical properties of PE composites, which greatly limits its application. Herein, we report a halogen-free flame-retardant PE/ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer composite (PE/EVA) with excellent flame retardancy and mechanical properties by combining compatibilizer, crosslinking agent, and carbon fiber. The presence of compatibilizer not only improves the compatibility of halogen-free flame retardants and matrix, but also interacts with the crosslinking agent to form a cladding structure on the surface of carbon fiber. The enhanced interaction between carbon fiber surface and matrix then results in significantly enhanced flame retardancy and mechanical properties of the composite. Specifically, adding 4 phr compatibilizer, 0.5 phr crosslinking agent, and 10 phr carbon fiber will lead to the halogen-free flame-retardant PE/EVA composite with a UL-94 V-1 level, limiting oxygen index of 27.1, and an increased tensile strength by 84.02% reaching 19.12 MPa. Moreover, further carbon fiber surface modification can further enhance the flame retardancy of the composite probably due to a synergistic flame-retardant effect caused by the surface modified nitrogen and silicon elements. As a result, the composite achieves UL-94 V-0 level and the limiting oxygen index of 27.7 with well-retained high tensile strength of 15.19 MPa. This work provides a practical strategy for enhancing the flame retardancy and mechanical property of PE-based composite simultaneously.

Abstract:The caged bicyclic phosphate1-oxo-4-hydroxymethyl-2,6,7-trioxa-1-phospha-bicyclo[2.2.2]octane (PEPA) is synthesized by making the pentaerythritol react with phosphorus oxychloride. When the intumescent flame retardant is added in PE uniformly, the flame retarding PE system is formed. Then, the flame retarding efficiency of materials is estimated with the vertical combustion method to study the effect of PEPA content on the flame retardance. The thermal degradation process of the flame retarding PE is researched by TG. The result shows that the flame retardance of PE will be improved with the increase of PEPA content.

Abstract:The varieties, action mechanisms and path of polypropylene (PP) flame retardants are presented. The latest research progress in PP flame retardants in recent years is reviewed. The intumescent flame retardants and inorganic flame retardants are discussed emphatically. It is pointed out that the development of environmental friendly flame retardants with characteristics of high efficiency, low fume, low toxicity and multiple functions is the research direction in the future.
Effects of Surface Modifiers on Mechanical and Rheological Properties of Halogen-Free Flame Retarded Polyethylene Composites

Abstract:Halogen-free flame-retarded linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) composites were prepared in a melt process using magnesium hydroxide (MH) as a flame retardant. The effects of surface modifiers on mechanical properties and rheological behavior of the filled LLDPE have been studied. The results show that the use of surface modifiers with low molecular weight (MW) such as stearic acid or its salts, and silane coupling agents can improve greatly the elongation at break of the composites, and decrease the tensile strength in most cases. However, PE-g-DBM (LLDPE grafted with dibutyl maleate) as a polymeric compatibilizer can make the strength and elongation at break of the composites increase simultaneously. It was found from the rheological measurements that the composites containing low MW surface modifiers exhibited a lower viscosity compared with that of the composites without them, whereas the use of PE-g-DBM compatibilizer increased the viscosity of the composites. In addition, their effects on the morphological structure of the flame-retarded LLDPE composites containing surface modifiers have been investigated using scanning electron microscope (SEM).

Abstract:With the increasing emphasis on environmental protection, the development of flame retardants for epoxy resin (EP) has tended to be non-toxic, efficient, multifunctional and systematic. Currently reported flame retardants have been capable of providing flame retardancy, heat resistance and thermal stability to EP. However, many aspects still need to be further improved. This paper reviews the development of EPs in halogen-free flame retardants, focusing on phosphorus flame retardants, carbon-based materials, silicon flame retardants, inorganic nanofillers, and metal-containing compounds. These flame retardants can be used on their own or in combination to achieve the desired results. The effects of these flame retardants on the thermal stability and flame retardancy of EPs were discussed. Despite the great progress on flame retardants for EP in recent years, further improvement of EP is needed to obtain numerous eco-friendly high-performance materials.

Abstract:Polypropylene (PP) is one of the five kinds of universal polymers that have greatly improved our life qualities. While a pestilent limitation of PP is its flammability. Usually, halogen-containing flame retardants (FRs) are used to improve its flame retard ability. However, the halogen-containing FRs are limited more and more strictly because they would produce environment problems, such as the release of corrosiveness smoke and toxicity combustion products. Hence, the researches of halogen-free FRs to replace the halogen-containing FRs become hot topics. In this article, the recent research progress of halogen-free FRs as additives for polypropylene and the flame retardant mechanism of halogen-free FRs are reviewed.

Abstract:Thermoplastic elastomers(TPEs) are of rubber elasticity at room temperature,and capable of being processed at high temperature like thermoplastics.Due to such excellent performances,TPEs have been widely used in many industry fields and commercial applications.However,the inherent molecular structures of TPEs lead a high flammability with dripping during the flaming fire,which limits their utilization.In recent years,with the improvement of requirements in flame-retardant and environmental performances of materials,more and more researches have been focused on the halogen-free flame retardant TPEs.The present work summarized the latest research development of the halogen-free flame retardant thermoplastic polystyrene elastomers,polyurethane elastomers and olefin elastomers.
Effects of Modified Layered Double Hydroxides on the Thermal Degradation and Combustion Behaviors of Intumescent Flame Retardant Polyethylene Nanocomposites

Abstract:The flame retardancy of layered double hydroxides (LDHs) correlates with their structure and dispersion in a polymeric matrix. To improve the flame retardant effectiveness of Mg-Al LDH in polyethylene (PE), 2-carboxy ethyl (phenyl) phosphinic acid (CEPPA) was adopted as a flame retardant modifier to prepare CEPPA-intercalated LDH (CLDH) by the regeneration method, which was then exfoliated in PE by melt blending in the form of a masterbatch prepared from solution mixing. By compounding CLDH with intumescent flame retardant (IFR) composed of ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and pentaerythritol (PER), the thermal degradation and combustion behaviors of the flame retardant PE-based composites were investigated to reveal the flame retardant mechanism between CLDH and IFR in PE. The reactions between CLDH and IFR were revealed to make a predominant contribution to the compact and fully developed char of PE/IFR/CLDH, which enhanced the flame retardancy of the composites.

Abstract:With the rapid development of electronic information technology, higher requirements have been put forward for the dielectric properties and load-bearing capacity of materials. In continuous glass fiber-reinforced thermoplastic composites, polypropylene matrix is a non-polar polymer with a very low dielectric constant and dielectric loss, but polypropylene is extremely flammable which greatly limits its application. Aiming at the better application of flame retardant-modified continuous glass fiber-reinforced polypropylene composites (FR/GF/PP) in the field of electronic communication, the effects of four different kinds of flame retardants (Decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE), halogen-free one-component flame retardant (MONO), halogen-free compound flame retardant (MULTI), and intumescent flame retardant (IFR)) on the properties of FR/GF/PP were compared, including the mechanical properties, dielectric properties and flame-retardant properties. The results showed that among the FR/GF/PP, IFR has the highest performance in mechanical properties, MULTI has better performance in LOI, DBDPE and IFR have better performance in flame retardant rating, and DBDPE and IFR have lower dielectric properties. Finally, gray relational analysis is applied to propose an approach for selecting the optimal combination (flame retardant type and flame-retardant content) of comprehensive performance. In the application exemplified in this paper, the performance of IFR-3-modified GF/PP is optimized.

Abstract:The progress in halogen-free flame retardant of polycarbonate and its blends (not including aluminium-magnesium flame retardant), including silicone, aromatic sulphonates, halogen-free phosphates, phosphor-nitrogen compounds, boron compounds,polymer/inorganics nano-composites and so on, is reviewed. The flame retardant mechanisms of these systems are introduced, and their advantages and disadvantages are also evaluated. It is pointed out that, research on synergism of halogen-free flame retarding elements, searching for novel flame retardants and new process technique which are of higher effect and lower cost according to different application of polycarbonate and its blends, should be the direction of our efforts in the future.

Abstract:Flammability of polypropylene / ethylene-propylene-diene copolymer (PP/EPDM) filled with melamine phosphate (MP) and pentaerythritol phosphate (PEPA) was studied by limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL 94, and cone calorimetry. The thermal degradation of the composites was investigted using thermogravimetric analysis (TG) and real-time Fourier transform infrared spectrum (RT-FTIR), and the mechanical properties of the materials were also studied. It had been found that the PP/EPDM/PEPA/MP composites (PEPM series) showed better flame retardancy than that of the PP/EPDM composites containing MP or PEPA. TG and RT-FTIR Studies indicated that the interaction occurs among MP, PEPA, and PP/EPDM. The incorporation of the flame retardants deteriorated the mechanical properties of the materials. Abstract:With two polymeric brominated flame retardants brominated epoxy resin(EP-B) and brominated polystyrene(PS-B) and a new type of low molecular weight brominated flame retardant decabromodiphenyl ethane(DBDPE) synchronized with antimony trioxide(Sb2O3) respectively as three halogen-antimony flame retardant systems,the effects of halogen-antimony flame retardant systems on thermoplastic polyester elastomer(TPEE) were discussed.The results show that when the mass fraction of brominated flame retardants is 18%,UL94 vertical burning of TPEE could reach V-0 level,the limit oxygen index could reach more than 27%,when EP-B and PS-B were compound with DBDPE respectively,the flame retardant efficiencies are better than that of the systems when they were used in TPEE alone.EP-B and PS-B had preferable compatibility with TPEE,when they were compound with DBDPE,the compatibility of DBDPE and TPEE could be improved.When the mass fraction of brominated flame retardants is 18%,EP-B and PS-B were compound with DBDPE respectively,the decline degree of mechanical properties of flame retardant TPEE modified with DBDPE alone could be reduced.The process of thermal weightlessness was changed by adding flame retardant,compare to flame retardant TPEE modified with EP-B and PS-B respectively,the carbon residue rate of flame retardant TPEE modified with compound flame retardants declined nearly 20%.

Abstract:<p>To improve the flame retardancy of low‐density polyethylene (LDPE) and mechanical properties of LDPE composites, phenol‐formaldehyde aluminum diethylphosphinate microcapsules (PF@ADP) was prepared by in‐situ polymerization with phenol‐formaldehyde (PF) resin as the wall material and halogen‐free flame‐retardant aluminum diethylphosphinate (ADP) as the core material. The effects of PF@ADP on flame retardancy and mechanical properties of LDPE were investigated by methods of combustion experiments, mechanical analysis, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and smoke density analysis. The results indicated that, compared with ADP/LDPE composites, the flame retardancy and mechanical properties of PF@ADP/LDPE were obviously improved. With the addition of 20 wt% PF@ADP (PF:ADP = 3:7), the limit oxygen index (LOI) of LDPE composites increased to 30.7% and UL‐94 reached V‐1 grade. The tensile strength and elongation at break reached 12.5 MPa and 431.2%, which was 20.2% and 23.1% higher than that of ADP/LDPE with the same addition. The addition of PF@ADP was beneficial to the smoke suppression of LDPE.</p>

Abstract:To improve the poor water resistant property of traditional intumescent flame retardant materials,a novel intumescent flame retardant low-density polyethylene(LDPE) composites were prepared based on a novel char forming agent(CFA) and microencapsulated ammonium polyphosphate(MCAPP).The synergistic effect between CFA and MCAPP on the flame retardant property,the thermal stability,and the water resistance property of flame retardant LDPE composites were investigated to ensure the best CFA/MAPP ratio.The results show that when the ratio of CFA/MAPP is 1∶3,the flame retardant LDPE composites show excellent flame retardant properties,thermal stability and water resistant property.
