Abstract:Based on the study of a new type of large-span structure, i.e. a spatial cable-truss tensile structure with an annular plane and complex geometric topology, a new method of prestress optimization using object-selection optimization was proposed. The main objective of the aforementioned method is to solve the complicated problem of feasible prestress distribution in cable-strut tensile structures with multi states of self-equilibrium stress and modes of mechanism displacement. In the proposed method, the modal matrix technique of decomposition and assembly operation, theory of structural equilibrium matrix and algebraic singular value decomposition method were employed. The method has a simple calculation format and can accomplish different objectives of structural prestress optimization. Three different ways in calculating the feasible prestress distribution in cable-strut tensile structures were summarized, and numerical results for three different types of structural systems were obtained to demonstrate the simplicity and validity of the proposed method.

Abstract:Engineers can adopt the reverse calculation method to get the construction tension force control value of cables of prestressed spatial structures. When adopting the grouping and batch tension method, engineers can only tension every batch of bars once to the construction control tension force value. After the last batch of bars is tensioned, the practical internal forces of all batches of bars will reach their own tension force design values.

Abstract:This paper carries out investigations into the optimal prestress design and construction technique analysis of the cable-strut tension structure (CSTS) with multioverall selfstress modes. First, the overall selfstress modes analysis method taking advantage of the symmetry of CSTS is proposed, which is applicable to CSTS with either single or multiple overall selfstress modes. Based on the selfstress modes analysis, the optimal prestress design of CSTS with multi-overall selfstress modes is then carried out and the minimum initial strain energy is selected as the objective function. After that, the construction technique using dynamic relaxation method is discussed, which is applicable not only to the final prestress stable systems but also to the in-slack cable-strut assemblies with insufficient number of structural members during the construction process. Finally, one laboratory model is designed to illustrate the proposed prestress design method and construction technique. The consistence of the measured values and computed results indicate the validity and accuracy of the proposed methods in this paper.
An experimental study on large-span spatial cable-truss tensile structure model

Abstract:The sunflower-shaped spatial cable-truss tensile structure with annular plane is a new type of large-span spatial structural system.A structural model with outer diameter of 5 meters,inner oval opening of 3.8 m×3.2 m and 12 basic units of spatial cable-truss was constructed and tested on the basis of theoretical considerations.The static behavior,free-vibration frequency and mode of the structure with different prestress levels under the condition of multiple loading cases and multi-step loading were studied,and the calculated results of finite element analysis were verified by the test data.The investigation shows that after the necessary structural rigidity is provided with the feasible prestress introduced,distribution of self-equilibrium forces of the system can be performed by numerical analysis.The structure has good load-carrying capacity and stability,and its mechanical behavior is linear elastic under symmetrical loading.The structure presents strong resistance to asymmetrical loads,and the structural member forces tend to be redistributed uniformly.The lower modes are characterized by vertical vibration,and the structure has excellent lateral rigidity.

Abstract:The rib-patterned spatial cable-truss tensile structure with annular plane is a new type of large-span spatial structural system. A structure model with an outer diameter of 5 meters and 16 cable-truss structural units was designed and the experiment was carried out on the basis of theoretical research. The static behavior and free-vibration properties of the model with different prestress levels under the condition of multi-load cases and multistep loading were studied. The calculated results of finite element analysis were verified by the test data, and the shape-forming process of the flexible system was simulated and discussed finally. The investigation showed that after the necessary structural rigidity has been built up with a certain feasible prestress introduced, the structural behavior is linear elastic and the structure has an excellent load-carrying capacity under normal load, but its deformation under asymmetrically distributed load is obvious and its lateral rigidity needs to be strengthened. The shape-forming process of the structure should be performed by designed steps and the structural stresses tend to an uniform redistribution.
Analysis method of cable's prestressing force correction construction for prestressed space structures

Abstract:Aiming at large errors of cable's prestressing force in prestressed space structures, a new mechanics analysis method of cable's prestressing force correction construction was presented. The analysis process was divided into two phases. In the first phase, the analysis was started at the 'zero prestressing force status' of the structure, and ended at the 'measured prestressing force status' of the structure with prestressing force errors. The subsistent tensile force calculation values of each cable were forced to meet the measured values through structural analysis and calculation. In the second phase, the starting point of analysis was the 'measured prestressing force status', and the ending point was the ideal 'designed prestressing force status' of the structure. The subsistent tensile force calculation values of each cable were forced to meet the design values through structural analysis and calculation, so the correction construction prestressing force values of each cable could be solved exactly using a few steps of iteration calculation. The illustrative example shows that, this new analysis method can be applied to the prestressing force correction construction simulation analysis for prestressed structures. The cable's prestressing force correction construction will be methodic, simple and accurate with the results of the analysis.
Research on the cable tension control of spatial steel sturucures consideiung temperature effect

Abstract:The control of cable tension is a critical issue during the construction of pre-stressed spatial steel structures. The theory of inverse analysis method based on controlling the initial cable length is discussed. Existing theories of tension control do not consider unpredictable factors like temperature changes. The effect of temperature changes on cable, link and beam element is analyzed. A procedure to adjust the cable tension according to temperature changes is proposed. Taking the construction process of a pre-stressed cylindrical latticed shell structure as an example to be investigated, it is found the adjusted cable tension varies linearly when temperature changes within ±18. It is indicated that the tension construction process could achieve the design goal when the cable tension is adjusted according to the proposed method.

Abstract:Due to various construction constraints,cable tension and adjustment of prestressed space steel structure are generally carried out in groups and stages.However,the cable tensioning of the following group will affect the cable forces of the former ones.So the key point of cable tension and adjustment is to calculate the cable control forces in each group and each stage.According to the fact that the cable tension and adjustment are a process starting with an initial state and ending with a target one,cable tension and adjustment can be considered as one problem,and the cable control forces of each group and each stage be obtained based on the cable strains of initial state and target state.Finally,a cable tension and adjustment experiment,together with simulation analysis on a truss string structure,showed that the method is feasible and effective.
Inverse analysis method for calculating cable tension based on controlling the initial length of cables

Abstract:To systematically study the whole construction process of pre-stress spatial steel structure, the inverse analysis method based on controlling the initial length of the cable is proposed. Via controlling the initial cable length of each grade, the tension force at each grade and batch can be obtained by nonlinear finite element iterative algorithm, starting from the pre-stressed state. Different from the normal finite element, the inverse analysis method is simple and distinct without the need of repeated calculation. The construction process of a suspended dome model is simulated according to the program written based on the theory proposed in this paper. It is found that this method can accurately simulate the shape-forming process of structure, and cables are tensioned only once and the construction is simplified.

Abstract:Tension structures are typical flexible structures which are apt to vibrate under various dynamic excitations.When the structural vibration is considerable large,it will affect the function and safety of the structure,thus vibration control of the structure is needed.A study on the dynamic control of tension structures is carried out.The electromechanical control equation of tension structures is formulated,and a nonlinear instantaneous optimal control algorithm is developed by introducing Newmark method.Active control of a cable dome with linear quadratic regulator and instantaneous optimal control is implemented respectively.A comparison between the control efficiencies of the two control algorithms is conducted.The effect of the number and layout of actuators to the control efficiency is investigated.The feasibility of the proposed methods used to control the vibration of tension structures is verified,and a guide to determine the number and layout of actuators is provided.

Abstract:The new type of structural system-sunflower-patterned large-span spatial cable-truss tensile structure with annular plane presented here has advantage over rib-patterned large-span cable-truss structures under asymmetrical distributed loading. Considering its complex geometric topology, multi states of self-equilibrium stress and modes of inextensional mechanisms, a prestress optimization strategy was proposed to solve the final feasible prestress distribution problem of the structures with multi states of self-equilibrium stress, where the decomposition and assembly method of modal matrix, the theory of structural equilibrium matrix and the singular value decomposition method were utilized. Design of feasible prestress distribution on three different types of cable-truss structures was investigated. The numerical results show that the new structural system has excellent mechanical property, and that the proposed prestress optimization strategy has simple algorithm and general purpose.

Abstract:Truss string structure (TSS) is a new type of large-span space structure which is composed of upper spatial truss and bottom high-strength cables with vertical supports. For certain upper truss, the main affect factor of dynamic characteristics of a TSS are prestress of the cables, pole number, rise-span ratio and vertical span ratio. In modal parameters, modal frequencies is the most direct and easily observed parameter, which largely reflects the stiffness of the structure and plays an important role in the dynamic response of the structure. In this paper, the mode testing experiment and finite element analysis is executed, to study the changes of the lower modal frequencies in different prestressed cables and to study the influence of the prestress to the dynamic properties of TSS.

Abstract:This paper presents a brief introduction on recent application of cables in light structures. Prestressibility is a common characteristic of the cables in various light structures. Some structures need prestress to keep stability, such as tensegrity structures and cable domes. For these structures, a process of form-finding is needed to determine the geometrical configurations of them. The form-finding of cable structures is modeled as constrained optimization problems, and direct search methods are proposed to solve these problems. The structural response of cable structures is usually geometrically nonlinear, and sometime even mechanism displacements are involved. A general theory so-called nonlinear force method for analysis of the structural systems with mechanism displacements is proposed. Shape adjustment in the construction of cable structures or in the control of adoptable cable structures are investigated. Optimization models and numerical algorithms are proposed to optimize the control process. © 2010 ASCE.

Abstract:Pretensioned long-span steel space structures are a new type of hybrid structures resulting from combining modem prestressing technology with long-span structures such as space grid structures (including space trusses and lattice shells), cable-bar tensioned structures and spatial truss structures. These structures have been developed rapidly and have found many applications in China in the recent decade. This paper provides a review of applications and developments of pretensioned long-span steel structures in China. The following topics on new technologies and new structures are given emphasis: prestressed grid structures, cable-stayed grid structures, beam string structures and prestressed segmental steel trusses. Prospects for pretensioned steel space structures in the 21st century are presented at the end of the paper.

Abstract:Combing the construction mechanics and the control of the initial length of cables,this paper proposed a calculation method for the accumulative sliding construction of pretensioned reticulated structures.In the method,the sequence of construction stages(in time) was taken as a variable,and the influence of subsequent construction to the prior structure was taken into account,thus,the time-dependent property of construction was considered.The cable force was calculated by controlling the initial length of cable of accumulative sliding construction according to the unique relationship between initial length and cable tension.Finally,the construction process of a prestressed reticulated shell was simulated using the multistage accumulative sliding method and the variation of cable tension during construction was investigated.It was found that all cable forces could reach the design values after construction if all cables were tensioned according to the values calculated by the proposed method in this paper.

Abstract:Simulation of construction process is to find the equilibrium state of every construction stage. The relationship between the nodal coordinates and the internal forces of elements with known original length is established. Every equilibrium state is found by controlling the original length with dynamic relaxation method. Three construction schemes such as pretensioning the diagonal cables from outer to inner hoop, only pretensioning the outer diagonal cables and adjusting the length of struts from outer to inner hoop are investigated based on this method. The results indicate that the proposed form-finding method by controlling the original length with dynamic relaxation mothod is accurate and effective and the proposed construction schemes are reasonable and can be adopted into the construction of cable domes.

Abstract:The cable- strut tensile structures are the prestress equilibrium systems composed by tensional cables and struts. The calculating of initial prestress is basic and important for analyzing of cable- strut tensile structures. In this paper, the characteristics of the cable- strut tensile structures have been presented. The methods of calculating initial prestress which make use of the singular value decomposition and the generalized reverse matrix was given. Numerical examples show that the methods of this paper is accurate and effective.

Abstract:Cable dome is a new type of the long span structure that is realized by Geiger after developing Fuller＇s idea of tensileintegrity, so it is called tensegrity cable dome. This is a special combination of struts and cables. It seems like that some is-lands (struts) are existed in the ocean (cables). A new concept of the integrity feasible prestressing is proposed in the pa-per. It is based on the special topology of a cable dome. The criterion for the geometric stability of a cable dome under multi-self-stress state is established by mean of the new concept. Several examples are calculated to illustrate its correctness andfeasibility. Some useful conclusions are obtained.

Abstract:The paper presented several types of finite-element model based on a typical long-span prestressed concrete cable-stayed bridge,established its precise and validated three-dimensional finite element model, and analyzed its dynamic properties. The conclusion indicates that the typical cable-stayed bridge has a lower natural frequency and dense modal, exists many coupled vibration.
