Abstract:Pool boiling heat transfer of water is investigated for a horizontal tube bundle. Heat transfer characteristics are examined for each row of tube under a series a series of heat fluxes. The results show that heat transfer coefficients in the tube bundle are higher than that for a single tube. And for tubes with a higher elevation in the bundle there prevails a lower incipient heat flux, an upper boiling curve and a higher heat transfer coefficient. Furthermore, the bundle effect (heat transfer augmentation in a tube bundle) is strong in partial nucleate boiling, but weak in fully developed nucleate boiling. It can be concluded that the main mechanism for pool boiling heat transfer augmentation in a tube bundle is the existence of sliding bubbles and the induced natural circulation of the boiling liquid. In addition, a correlation between boiling heat transfer coefficients and heat fluxes was developed.

Abstract:A semi-analytical model was developed for the prediction of enhanced flow boiling heat transfer in vertical porous tubes.The model assumes that forced convection and nucleate boiling coexist in the annular flow regime.Conservations of mass, momentum, and energy are used to determine liquid film thickness and temperature. The heat flux due to nucleate boiling consists of those inside and outside micro-tunnels. A detailed analysis of various forces acting on the bubble is presented to predict its mean departure diameter. The active nucleation site density of porous layer is determined by correcting the pool boiling correlation with a suppression factor. The flow boiling heat transfer coefficients of high saturation temperature organic fluid (cumene) in a vertical plasma coated tube are studied numerically. It is shown that the present model can predict most of experimental values within ±20%. The numerical results also indicate that the nucleate boiling contribution to the overall heat transfer coefficient decreases from 50% to 15% with vapor quality increasing from 0.1 to 0.5.

Abstract:An experimental study on the performance of boiling heat transfer of R22 outside horizontal tube was conducted with two doubly-enhanced tubes(Tube I and Tube II) with different geometries at saturation temperatures of 9.6 ℃and 5.8 ℃,respectively.Wilson plot technique was used to separate the boiling heat transfer resistance from the total thermal resistance.Under the same conditions,the in-tube convective heat transfer coefficient of the doubly-enhanced tubes is 2.2-2.8 times that of the smooth one,and at the saturation temperature of 9.6 ℃,the boiling heat transfer coefficient of Tube II can reach(2.2-3.4)×104 W/(m2 ·K),which is one order of magnitude larger than that of the smooth one.The thermal resistance analysis reveals that the thermal resistances of the water side and refrigerant side are of the same order for the two tubes. With the increase of heating water velocity,the thermal resistance of the inner water decreases and that of the refrigerant increases.To further improve the heat transfer coefficient,the enhancement for both inside and the outside is equally important.

Abstract:Condensation is a phase-change heat-transfer phenomenon crucial in many industries involving latent heat release and mass transfer. Shell-and-tube condensers are essential contributors to the condensation process, and their tube bundles serve as a substrate. Here, the thermal-hydraulic characteristics of condensation in a longitudinal-flow shell-and-tube condenser were investigated numerically. The shell-side longitudinal-flow condensation on the horizontal tube bundles was studied considering inlet flow rate, overheating temperature, and non-condensable gases. Related pressure drops and heat transfer coefficients were subdivided into several components to provide further insights. Two-phase interface behavior analyses were conducted to demonstrate the outcomes with respect to the non-condensable gas layer, vapor quality, and non-condensable gas type. Based on the thorough quantitative analyses outlined above, the thermal resistance of the condensation on the horizontal tube bundle was investigated. The thermal resistance outside the tube was found to dominate the condensation process. Finally, hexagon clamping baffles (HCBs) were introduced as a novel solution to impair condensate boundary layers and provide perturbations to intensify condensation heat transfer. The results revealed that the HCBs enhanced the total heat transfer coefficients by 8.1%-40.7% while reducing the critical overheating temperature and the threshold ratio between sensible and latent heat.

Abstract:In order to study the heat transfer on flow boiling and bubble behavior in vertical tubes,the lattice Boltzmann (LB) method was used to simulate the flow and heat transfer processes respectively by the improved pseudo potential model and the thermal model.The simulation results were compared with the empirical relationships to verify the correctness of the model.The influence of bubble behavior on boiling heat transfer coefficient was investigated.The results show that the heat transfer coefficient presents periodic fluctuations with the nucleation,growth,slip and detachment of bubbles.Finally,the effect of gravity acceleration on bubble behavior and boiling heat transfer was investigated.The larger the gravity,the shorter the growth cycle of the bubble,the greater the boiling heat transfer coefficient.

Abstract:An experimental study on the performance of boiling heat transfer of R134a outside a single horizontal tube was conducted for four doubly-enhanced tubes(E10,E11,E12,E15)with different geometries at saturation temperature of 8℃.Experimental results showed that the studied tubes could effectively enhance heat transfer.The overall heat transfer coefficients of the tube E12 were higher than that of the others,and its enhancement factors,the boiling heat transfer coefficient relative to that of Cooper solutions for smooth surface,varied from 2.23 to 2.71,with an average value of 2.54.Because of the different thermodynamic properties,the boiling heat transfer coefficients of R22 were 20%—40% higher than those of R134a.The enhancement factor of boiling heat transfer was independent of refrigerant.

Abstract:The principle of heat transfer enhancement in the core flow of a tube has been proposed, in this paper, to make fluid temperature uniform in the core region of a tube and decrease flow resistance, which is different from heat transfer enhancement in the boundary flow of a tube.Two new models, representing heat transfer enhancement in the laminar and turbulent tube flow, have been established and numerically analyzed.Theoretical and numerical results indicate that heat transfer enhanced components designed according to the principle proposed in this paper will be benefit for increasing convective heat transfer coefficient, reducing flow resistance and raising the PEC value of a heat transfer enhanced tube.The presented principle, therefore, may help developing new type of heat transfer unit and designing heat exchanger with high heat transfer coefficient and low flow resistance.

Abstract:With the purpose of enhancement of heat transfer performance and reduction of the volume of steam generator (SG), a structure of longitudinal finned tubes was proposed to replace the smooth tubes of SG in this paper. Taking the SG smooth tubes of Daya bay Nuclear Power plant as a reference, the simplified heat transfer model of new longitudinal finned tubes was established by ANSYS CFX. Three-dimensional numerical model was developed to investigate the fluid-solid coupled thermal hydraulic characteristics of different types of the longitudinal finned tubes compared with the smooth tubes. Analysis of calculation results were sufficiently discussed for the effect of mass flow rate, fin array, solid thermal conductivity and frictional resistance. The numerical results revealed that the heat transfer coefficient increase with the increasing mass flow rate in the secondary side. The material of the tubes has significantly influence on the heat transfer process. Different flow conditions have different thermal hydraulic characteristics. The evaluated criterion to judge the enhancement of the heat transfer of the coupled process was also proposed. The numerical results can provide some useful guidance for design optimization of longitudinal finned tubes in SG.

Numerical Heat Transfer Part A Applications

Abstract:In the present work, a numerical method is utilized to simulate the nucleate pool boiling of R134a outside the horizontal plain tube. Eulerian multiphase model integrated with Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) nucleate boiling model is adopted. The nucleate pool boiling is numerically investigated at the heat flux of 20?80?kW/m(2) and saturation temperatures of 279 and 299.7 K. By analyzing the experimental results, a modified correlation of active nucleation site density is proposed. The numerical results based on the modified correlation agree well with the experimental data of the pool boiling heat transfer outside the plain tube. According to the simulation of azimuthal variations of temperature around the tube, it is found that the region between 90? and 130? has the best heat transfer performance for its high velocity and turbulence. The maximum temperature appears at the upper of the tube because the velocity and turbulence intensity at this region are lower. The investigation helps to explain the phenomena and observed facts in the experiment.

Abstract:Experiments of upward flow boiling heat transfer of water in vertical internal thread tube and plain-end tube were conducted respectively under the pressure of 610kPa. By comparison of each test result, it shows that flow boiling heat transfer coefficients in internal thread tube are 1.6 to approximately 2 times that in plain-end tube, and the initial boiling point in internal thread tube is less than that in plain-end tube. It also can be seen that the internal thread tube tends to elevate critical heat flux (CHF). The heat transfer enhancement of flow boiling in the internal thread tube is remarkable. The experimental results are correlated to propose correlation of flow boiling heat transfer coefficients.

Abstract:Single-phase convective heat transfer and steam-water two-phase flow boiling heat transfer experiments have been carried out with a vertical seven-rod bundle at low flow conditions near atmospheric pressure. With respect to single-phase experimental results, new correlations were developed to predict convective heat transfer coefficients of laminar flow and Reynolds numbers at the transition from the laminar region to the turbulent region. Two-phase experimental results show that the rod bundle geometry enhanced heat transfer compared with circular tubes. An obvious mass velocity effect on the flow boiling heat transfer coefficient was observed. This conclusion indicates that forced convection, instead of nucleate boiling heat transfer, dominated two-phase flow boiling heat transfer under the experimental conditions. In addition, two-phase flow boiling heat transfer coefficients in the vertical rod bundle increased first and then decreased with the quality increases for a given mass velocity. By taking the enhancement factor of forced convection and the suppression factor of nucleate boiling into account, a new correlation in terms of Boiling number, Reynolds number and Martinelli number was developed to be successful in predicting predict two-phase flow boiling heat transfer coefficients. Abstract:The convective heat transfer process of helium flow cross helically coiled tube bundle was simulated by CFD method.Because of the small helical angle of the bundle,a simplified 2-D axisymmetric model was adopted during calculation,which has saved computer memory and CPU time dramatically.The turbulence was simulated by a low Re k-ε model which can get relatively good result in the simulation of cross flow problems in comparing with wall-function treatment.The numerical results show that the average Nu number of the first several tubes in inline arrangement is bigger than that in staggered arrangement,while the average Nu of the inner tubes in inline arrangement is smaller than that in staggered arrangement.However,for large transverse distance the difference of Nu between the two arrangements is small.The optimum distance between the bundle and the bundle wall may be about half the transverse distance of two adjacent inner tube rows,which results in both uniform helium temperature distribution at outlet of the bundle and uniform heat transfer rate of the tube in different rows.It is also found that the departure of tube row from original position will cause ununiformity of heat transfer in different tube rows.The results obtained can be used in the design of helically coiled tube type steam generator and heat exchanger.

Abstract:Abstract A flow boiling heat transfer experimental investigation on the shell-side of a smooth tube and two enhanced tubes (C-EHT, P-EHT) was performed using R410A as working fluid. The outer surface of the C-EHT tube is covered with special fins having a salient height, and the inner surface has a thread structure with the same distribution density. The outer surface of the P-EHT tube has lots of tiny pits formed by high-strength sandblasting and smooth inner surface. The inlet and outlet vapor quality is 0.2 and 0.8 at a saturation temperature of 279K. The flow boiling experimental results show that the evaporation heat transfer coefficient of C-EHT tube is the largest among the tested tubes. However, for the P-EHT tube, its heat transfer coefficient is lower than that of smooth tube. C-EHT tube with special fins has higher heat transfer area, which can also intensify the interfacial turbulence with increasing fins. The reason why the flow boiling heat transfer coefficient of the P-EHT tube is lower than that of the smooth tube is that the diameter of the pit on P-EHT tube is too small to form the nucleation cites, which results in bubble retention under the condition of low mass flux and deteriorates the flow boiling heat transfer performance.

Abstract:In order to get a better understanding of distribution characteristics of the dynamic and heat transfer performance in a horizontal-tube evaporator, a numerical calculation was developed to simulate the internal film condensation and external falling film evaporation in a tube bundle. The temperature field, film thickness and local heat transfer coefficient were predicted along the tube length and in-between tubes. In view of a good agreement of the simulated predictions with the data of the practical desalination plant, the theoretical model was proved to be valid and accurate. The results show that the flow field and heat transfer rate are improved by means of optimizing the flow density distribution of liquid film outside a tube bundle on basis of the variation of the internal condensation process. The internal vapour condensation temperature reduces sharply at the outlet of the second pass. The local overall heat transfer coefficients tend to decrease from the inlet of the tubes to the outlet and approach the maximum at the bottom of the bundle.

Abstract:The boiling flow resistance and heat transfer characteristics is experimentally investigated under the outer tube wall heating condition in a concentric annular tube with 2.1mm gap size. The results show that the flow resistance in the annular tube is greater than that in circular tube, as well as the boiling heat transfer becomes enhanced. The heat transfer coefficient has close relationship with the pressure, thermal equilibrium quality, mass flux, heat flux, gap size of the annular tube, and heat models as well. The physical explanation about the enhancement boiling heat transfer in the annular tube is proposed with both micro-film evaporation mechanics and bubble disturbance mechanics. The correlations to calculate the flow friction coef-ficient and heat transfer coefficient are proposed based on the experimental data.
Internal Flow Boiling Heat Transfer Enhanced in Vertical Tubes with Longitudinal Microchannels

Abstract:A tube with longitudinal microchannels on inside wall has been developed to enhance flow boiling heat transfer. The experimental investigation was conducted to identify the flow boiling heat transfer performance for water flowing through the microchanneled tube. The flow boiling heat transfer in the enhanced tube is greatly intensified for the fully developed nucleate boiling regime. The heat transfer coefficient in microchanneled tube is increased with a magnitude of 270% compared with the traditionary smooth tube. The heat transfer performance of the microchanneled tube is as good as or even better than that of other existing enhanced tubes.

Abstract:Tube bundle arrangement has a great effect on the heat transfer performance of flooded shell-and-tube heat exchanger. In the present study, a shell-side heat transfer model was established to reveal the effect of tube bundle arrangement for flooded shell-tube evaporator, and was validated experimentally; the simulation results agree well with the experimental data with a deviation less than 15%. Based on the validated model, the effect of tube arrangement was analyzed; in the upper section of tube bundle, the size and amount of bubbles increase, leading to deterioration of heat transfer. The optimization method for uneven configuration of the horizontal and vertical tube spaces was proposed, and the optimized tube spaces were obtained; the performance of the optimized heat exchanger was tested and compared with that of the original one, and shows over 10% higher heat transfer capacity than the original one.

Abstract:Falling film heat transfer, an advanced technology, has been widely applied in the refrigeration and desalination system and beyond. Numerical simulations are conducted aiming to investigate the impacts of liquid flow rate, distributor height, tube pitch and tube bundle arrangement on the falling film hydrodynamics and heat transfer performance in the tube bundles. The liquid film thickness (LFT), heat transfer coefficient (HTC) and bundle effect are obtained under various conditions. The results indicated that: (1) the calculation results are in good consistent with the previous studies in both LFT and HTC; (2) various inter-column flow patterns, solitary wave, droplet and liquid bridge are widely observed; (3) the velocity fluctuation due to the pulsatile droplet impacting or liquid column impingement is one of the fundamental causes of bundle effect; (4) bundle effect universally exists in the falling film tube bundle, and varies with the liquid flow rate, distributor height, tube pitch and tube bundle arrangement; (5) the triangular and square tube bundles behave the best and the worst in the average HTC of the tube bundle, respectively, while the square tube bundle and rotated square tube bundle provide the largest and the smallest bundle effect, respectively.
