Abstract:Wheels are important safety components in the vehicle driving system. Automobile lightweight is the direction of the modern automobile development. In this article, steel wheel lightweight was studied. The equal strength design of rim was used to reduce the weight of the wheel. Stress analysis of the wheel was studied using UG/Nastran. A professional software WheelStrength was used to predict the radial and cornering fatigue lives of the wheel. Sheet stamping process was set up to analyze the interference fit between the disk and the rim. The assembly was simulated by axisymmetric finite element method. After calculation and analysis, the stress distributions and fatigue lives for rim under different load cases have been found. The thicknesses of wheel rim bead and the interface between rim and disk cannot be reduced. Stress and fatigue simulation results were compared using different thicknesses of the optimized region. It was found that the best thickness of the optimized region was 1.5 mm. Spinning was used to form the flared preform. The thickness of the rim after spinning and rolling forming agreed well with the simulation. The results of fatigue tests indicated that the lightweight wheel met the design requirement. The weight of the rim was reduced by about 14%.

Abstract:Resilient wheels composed of a steel rim, a steel wheel core, a rubber layer and a press-fit ring are widely used on trams due to their ability to reduce noise and vibration. To make the press-fit process easier, the rubber layer in a resilient wheel is normally not continuous but instead, it is formed by rubber blocks which are uniformly separated in the circumferential direction. The gaps between the rubber blocks allow the rubber blocks to deform freely in the circumferential direction and therefore, generate stiffness which is lower than that when no such gaps are present. However, the question of what are the effects of the gaps on the vibration and sound radiation behaviours of the wheel and on wheel/rail noise has received little attentions. The aim of this paper is to answer this question adequately by developing a wheel/rail noise prediction model and carrying out a parametric study on key design parameters including rubber material parameters, the number of rubber blocks and the gap-rubber ratio.

Abstract:<p>The shattered rim on railway wheels is increasingly concerned in recent years. Based on the failure analysis, the mechanism of shattered rim was revealed. The contact stress distribution of wheel/rail with inclusions in the wheel was analyzed by ABAQUS. Then the stress field was imported into FRANC3D to simulate the crack propagation. It is found that the simulation results were in good agreement with those obtained experimentally from the actual shattered rim, which proves the availability of the simulation. Meanwhile, the influence of the size and location of the inclusions on the fatigue life of the wheel was evaluated. Based on the crack propagation curves obtained by simulation, the rolling contact fatigue damage tolerance analysis and remaining fatigue life assessment method of wheels were proposed</p>

Abstract:Based on a new type of resilient wheel installed on a linear motor subway train, a measurement campaign is devised to evaluate the effectiveness of the resilient wheel in reducing vibration and noise. For reference, the same series of tests are carried out on another train of the same type but fitted with conventional wheels. The measurements consist of the vibration and noise of various parts of the vehicle-track system which are used to investigate the sources of wheel-rail rolling noise, the acceleration of the axle boxes and the rail head, the noise inside the vehicle, and the noise close to the wheels. It is found that the interior noise levels in the driver's cab and passenger car even when running on a curve with corrugated rails drop below the required limits when using the new type of resilient wheels. The axle box acceleration is used as an indication of the effectiveness of the resilient wheel in reducing the vibration to guarantee the reliability of the bogie frame. The vibration in the lateral direction is reduced considerably on both straight and curved tracks, while in the curve it has a greater decrease.

Abstract:This study mainly focuses on the mechanism of wheel tread spalling through wheelset longitudinal vibration that has been often neglected. Analysis of two actual cases of the wheel tread spalling problem leads to the conclusion that the wheel tread spalling is closely related to the wheelset longitudinal vibration in some locomotives, and many of these problems can be reasonably explained if the wheelset longitudinal vibration is considered. For better understanding of some abnormal wheel spalling problems, the formations of the wheelset longitudinal vibration and the wheel/rail contact parameters were analysed in the initial wheel tread spalling. With the preliminary analytical results, the wheelset longitudinal dynamic behaviour, the characteristics of wheel/rail contact and the mechanics in the condition of the wheelset longitudinal vibration were further studied quantitatively. The results showed that the wheelset longitudinal vibration changed not only the limit of these parameters and the position of principal stress, but also the direction of the principal stress on the surface of wheel/rail contact patch. It is likely that the significant stress changes provoke too much stress on the surface of wheel/rail contact patch, cause fatigue in wheel/rail contact patch and eventually lead to wheel tread spalling. The results of these studies suggest that the suppression of the wheelset longitudinal vibration extends wheel/rail life and the addition of a vertical damper with an ahead angle provides a possible solution to the wheel spalling problem.

Abstract:Wheel transverse wear, irregular wear along the circumference (out-of-roundness), and rolling contact fatigue (RCF) are inevitable problems in the railway industry. One effective countermeasure to solve these problems is to apply a tread abrasive block (tread trimmer) that has the function of cleaning and repairing the wheel treads. In this study, to investigate the effect of abrasive blocks on wheel wear and RCF, five working modes of the abrasive block were designed for an urban express train operating on an urban express line in China. The wheel profiles, wheel out-of-roundness, and abrasive block profiles of the urban express train were monitored. The results show that the low-pressure and intermittent modes of the abrasive block can suppress wheel polygonal wear, eliminate hollow wear with acceptable tread wear, maintain equivalent conicity at a good level, reduce the wear of the abrasive block itself, and remove RCF cracks.

Abstract:The objective of this study is to explore the rolling contact fatigue (RCF) behaviors of wheel materials with a flat under different braking conditions using a JD-1 wheel/rail simulation apparatus. The results indicates that the microstructure of wheel flat zone is composed of white etching layer (WEL), transition layer (TL), plastic deformation layer (PDL). The martensite caused by thermal effect is clarified in the WEL of wheel flat zone. There are three kinds of damage forms including the material accumulation, plowing and peeling in the front, the middle and the back of wheel flat zone, respectively. Fatigue cracks caused by impact only initiate and propagate in the back of wheel flat zone. Meanwhile, with the braking speed or braking time increasing, the fatigue damage of wheel flat zone worsen and the thickness of WEL increases, which brings an increase of fatigue crack length and propagation angle.

Abstract:To avoid pneumatic tire puncture, blow-out and other problems, a new type of non-pneumatic safety wheel called the mechanical elastic wheel (ME-Wheel) has been developed and investigated. The durability of the ME-Wheel is studied to improve its life; at the same time, the best preventive maintenance period can also be provided for the users, to ensure the safety and reliability of the ME-Wheel in operating conditions. The finite-life design method is proposed to predict the ME-Wheel life; the weakest component of ME-Wheel is ascertained by analysing its structure static strength, and the predicted model of pin for lifetime theory is established by using finite-life design method. Furthermore, the ME-Wheel durability is simulated using the finite element method (FEM) on the basis of the established virtual proving ground, and the enhancement coefficient is combined to calculate ME-Wheel lifespan. Finally, the results of theoretical calculation and simulation are verified using endurable road testing. The results show that the methods of theoretical calculation and simulation, which are applied in our paper to predict the lifespan of ME-Wheel, are highly congruent with the experimental results. Therefore, the proposed method is also entirely suitable for other mechanical structures in the durability research field.

Abstract:This paper designs a kind of air suspension mechanical-vibration-reduction wheel for mining engineering vehicles; the research work on topology analysis and the structural optimization of the inner and outer rims are carried out with this wheel as the research object. Using Workbench finite-element analysis software, taking the results of static analysis and modal analysis of the two as constraints, a variety of structural improvement styles are obtained through a topology analysis method and compared and verified, and a more reasonable improvement result is selected and assembled into a whole wheel for final analysis and verification. The results show that the optimization results of the wheel still meet the design's load-bearing requirements, and the weight is lighter; the topology analysis results are ideal.

Abstract:Through the study on gum rubber/modified nanometer composites, rubber/layered silicate nanocomposites technology, modified technology of carbon black surface grafting and other formulation schemes are proposed for use, which can effectively improve mechanical performances, aging resistance and fatigue resistance of gum rubber vulcanizates. Thus, the carrying capacity and service life of damping elastic material for rail transport will be improved.

Abstract:Aiming at the independent development of tracked vehicles, it is urgent to improve its mobility, passability and ride comfort, a new type of flexible road wheel with a "wheel-hinge-hub" combined structure is proposed in this study. The vibration model characteristics of the flexible road wheel were studied by the combination of numerical simulation and experiments. The superelasticity of rubber is obtained through uniaxial tensile experiment of the material and a detail three-dimensional nolinear finite element model of the flexible road wheel is established through finite element software ABAQUS. The free vibration equation of the flexible road wheel is solved by Lanczos vector direct superposition method, and its predicted modes and natural frequencies are compared with experimental results, which verifies the accuracy and reliability of the established finite element model. On this basis, the effects of various key structural or material factors on the natural frequencies of the flexible road wheel are studied using orthogonal experimental design method. Besides, the vibration modal characteristics of the flexible road wheel are also compared with those of the rigid road wheel. The research results provide a theoretical basis for the vibration and noise reduction of flexible road wheel.

Abstract:Hollow wear is a common type of wheel profile evolution in high-speed railway, causing special contact characteristics in turnouts. Taking into account the flexibility of wheelsets and rails in turnout as well as complex constraint conditions, the vehicle-turnout coupling model is built and wheel-rail dynamic interaction in turnouts is analyzed. After calculating the wheel-rail non-Hertz contact behavior with wheel profile evolution, the accumulated surface initiated rolling contact fatigue (RCF) of turnouts are evaluated based on the shakedown theory. Results indicate that the wheel transition position is shifted backwards with wheel profile evolution. The vertical wheel-rail force is contributed by wheelset bending modes in the switch panel, and its maximum value decreases by 22% due to the 87% reduction in vertical contact irregularity in the crossing panel. The severe contact between false flange and wing rail leads to the aggravation of lateral axle box acceleration (ABA) while the positions of its characteristic frequencies are changed from the point rail to wing rail. When the degree of hollowing becomes medium, wheel profile evolution improves the conformal contact that decreases the accumulated surface initiated RCF in the switch panel. As the degree of hollowing becomes severe, the false flange's contact with wing rail is prone to RCF in the crossing panel.

Abstract:The structure of wheel and its mechanical behavior in soil is crucial to the performance of the whole lunar rover, and the knowledge of these is helpful to improve the design of the lunar rover. Based on the press-sinkage and shear model of the soil, this paper constructs the force balance equation of the wheel, analyses effect of the wheel's driving state and its structure parameters to the performance of the wheel, which is helpful to design a test-bed and improve the design of the wheel.

Abstract:Wear and rolling contact fatigue (RCF) problems observed on metro wheel/rail systems in China in the last 15 years are summarized and explained from the aspects of phenomena, causes, and validated countermeasures. Presented wheel/rail wear in the lateral direction includes wheel flange wear, rail side wear, and abnormal wear of wheels such as differential, hollow, groove, and channel wear. As for irregular wear on wheel and rail running surfaces, the focus is on four and two important cases for wheel and rail, respectively, i.e., low-order wheel polygonal wear, high-order wheel polygonal wear, wheel stochastic out-of-roundness (OOR), wheel corrugation, short-pitch rail corrugation on the tracks with resilient and conventional fasteners, and rail corrugation on damping sleeper tracks. Finally, some unusual RCF problems occurring on wheel and rail surfaces are presented.

Abstract:The overall material properties of newly designed wheels are necessary to be studied for the autonomous innovation and nationalization of high-power locomotive wheels. Microstructure, mechanical properties as well as friction and wear properties of three wheel materials, which were newly designed as future high-power locomotive wheels, were investigated. The microstructures of the three wheel materials were observed by using both of optical microscope and scanning electron microscope; the proeutectoid ferrite volume, pearlite lamellar spacing and micro-hardness were tested. The microstructure of the three wheel materials was studied and the mechanical properties of the three wheels were obtained through tensile, impact and hardness tests. Optimol SRV friction-wear test was used to carry out sliding friction and wear test at room temperature. By comparing the three wheals＇ microstructure, mechanical properties and tribological performance, the different abrasion mechanism were found among the three wheel steels, which was mainly determined by the and the respective mechanical properties.

Abstract:The finite element model of a wheel under static load condition was built up based on the wheel dynamic bending fatigue test,which can be used to determine the critical areas in the wheel structure where the Von Mises stresses are high.The results of the experimental stress analysis made for the static loading test agree with the results of the finite element analysis quite well,which indicates that the finite element model is effective and valid.The results also show that the critical areas of high stress level under static loading condition are where the fatigue cracks initiate in the dynamic fatigue test.So that the durability of the wheel can be effectively increased by improving the wheel design to lower the stress levels of the critical areas.Such design improvement can be effectively guided by the static finite element analysis.

Abstract:Wear on the wheel-rail interface has a serious effect on the operation safety and efficiency of heavy-haul freight vehicles. Wheel asymmetric wear (WAW) greatly affects the vehicle's dynamic performance. This paper explores the causes of WAW in heavy-haul freight vehicles and proposes the limit value of the WAW. A dynamic model of heavy-haul freight vehicle is established and the Jendel wheel wear model is used to analyze the mechanisms and influencing factors of WAW. The study primarily focuses on four factors: uneven loading of freight vehicles, differences in wheel surface hardness, suspension errors of the left and right side, and the distribution characteristics of the line. Next, the wheel wear model is verified by the test data, the flange wear and tread wear are analyzed at the same time. The WAW limits value under the load and empty conditions by considering the elastic wheelset model is investigated. The results showed that differences in wheel surface hardness between the left and right wheels and line distribution are the main causes of WAW. By conducting dynamic calculations, the WAW limit value of the empty and heavy vehicle is set as 2 mm. During the operation, it is necessary to effectively monitor the vehicle and track parameters that affect WAW.

Abstract:The surface crack of wheel/rail is a significant problem affecting the safety and maintenance of railway. This study presents the experimental results to explore the formation and damage mechanism of rolling contact fatigue (RCF) surface cracks of wheel/rail materials under dry condition. The results indicate that the surface cracks mouths on the rail roller are perpendicular to the resultant direction of shear force. Fatigue cracks grow along a larger angle to depth on the rail rollers than on the wheel rollers due to the difference of materials. Meanwhile, there are visible subsurface and secondary cracks as well as lamellar structure cracks. The vertical force changed in the later 1.5×105 cycles leads to a significant difference in the cracks propagation.
