Impacts of different ambient temperatures on cold-start characteristics of speed-up duration of an ISAD hybrid diesel engine in plateau

Abstract:Cold-start characteristics of speed-up is one of the most essential issues affecting the environmental adaptation of diesel engines at extremely frigid environments in plateau. In this study, speed, ignition, combustion, and emission characteristics of speed-up of a high-pressure common rail hybrid diesel engine during cold-start are comparatively investigated at different ambient temperatures in plateau (2000 m, 20~-45 °C). The results indicate that fuel injection duration is extended due to increased fuel's viscosity, atomization and evaporation quality are decreased, and heat absorbed by cold wall of the combustion chamber is increased as ambient temperature drops from normal to extremely frigid. In cold climates, deterioration of thermal state and spray mixture's quality in the cylinder and increase of chemical reaction time's proportion lead to delayed ignition timing of first-firing-cycle and transient combustion cycles, and instable peak pressure in-cylinder, indicated mean effective pressure and start of combustion during speed-up. This also results in engine speed stagnation and poor stability at lower ambient temperatures. As a result, cold-start power performance decreases and exhaust emissions increase sharply. The results offer good contributions that the lowest temperature for cold-start success is −45 °C and cold-start's fuel injection strategy is proposed under extreme conditions. Among these findings, transient emissions of HC, CO, CO 2 and NO x all increase first, and reach a peak at the end of speed-up duration, then decrease and level off when cyclic fuel injection quantity of start-up is constant. Transient and peak emissions of HC increase progressively with decreased ambient temperature. Transient and peak emissions of CO, CO 2 , and NO x reach their peak at −35 °C but decrease significantly at −45 °C due to weak blue-flame and hot-flame reactions.The intervention of glow plug enables cold-start ignition at lower ambient temperatures but does not effectively improve combustion and speed stability and emission performance.
