Abstract:Let {Zn,n≥1} be a sequence of independent nonnegative r.v.’s (random variables) with finite second moments. It is shown that under a Lindeberg-type condition, the αth inverse moment E{a+Xn}−α can be asymptotically approximated by the inverse of the αth moment {a+EXn}−α where a>0,α>0, and {Xn} are the naturally-scaled partial sums. Furthermore, it is shown that, when {Zn} only possess finite rth moments, 1≤r<2, the preceding asymptotic approximation can still be valid by using different norming constants which are the standard deviations of partial sums of suitably truncated {Zn}.

Abstract:Estimates are constructed for the deviation of the concentration functions of sums of independent random variables with finite variances from the folded normal distribution function without any assumptions concerning the existence of the moments of summands of higher orders. The results obtained are extended to Poisson-binomial, binomial, and Poisson random sums. Under the same assumptions, bounds are obtained for the approximation of the concentration functions of mixed Poisson random sums by the corresponding limit distributions. In particular, bounds are put forward for the accuracy of approximation of the concentration functions of geometric, negative binomial, and Sichel random sums by exponential, folded variance gamma, and folded Student distributions. Numerical estimates of all the constants involved are written down explicitly.

Abstract:Let $ \nu $ be a probability distribution over the linear semi-group $ \mathrm{End}(E) $ for $ E $ a finite dimensional vector space over a locally compact field. We assume that $ \nu $ is proximal, strongly irreducible and that $ \nu^{*n}\{0\}=0 $ for all integers $ n\in\mathbb{N} $. We consider the random sequence $ \overline\gamma_n := \gamma_0 \cdots \gamma_{n-1} $ for $ (\gamma_k)_{k \ge 0} $ independents of distribution law $ \nu $. We define the logarithmic singular gap as $ \mathrm{sqz} = \log\left( \frac{\mu_1}{\mu_2} \right) $ , where $ \mu_1 $ and $ \mu_2 $ are the two largest singular values. We show that $ (\mathrm{sqz}(\overline{\gamma}_n))_{n\in\mathbb{N}} $ escapes to infinity linearly and satisfies exponential large deviations estimates below its escape rate. To prove these results, we do not rely on any classical results for random products of invertible matrices with $ \mathrm{L}^1 $ moment assumption. Instead we describe an effective way to group the i.i.d factors into i.i.d random words that are aligned in the Cartan projection. We moreover have an explicit control over the moments.

The moment problem for random objects in a category

Abstract:The moment problem in probability theory asks for criteria for when there exists a unique measure with a given tuple of moments. We study a variant of this problem for random objects in a category, where a moment is given by the average number of epimorphisms to a fixed object. When the moments do not grow too fast, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for existence of a distribution with those moments, show that a unique such measure exists, give formulas for the measure in terms of the moments, and prove that measures with those limiting moments approach that particular measure. Our result applies to categories satisfying some finiteness conditions and a condition that gives an analog of the second isomorphism theorem, including the categories of finite groups, finite modules, finite rings, as well as many variations of these categories. This work is motivated by the non-abelian Cohen-Lenstra-Martinet program in number theory, which aims to calculate the distribution of random profinite groups arising as Galois groups of maximal unramified extensions of random number fields.

Abstract:Granville-Soundararajan, Harper-Nikeghbali-Radziwill, and Heap-Lindqvist independently established an asymptotic for the even natural moments of partial sums of random multiplicative functions defined over integers. Building on these works, we study the even natural moments of partial sums of Steinhaus random multiplicative functions defined over function fields. Using a combination of analytic arguments and combinatorial arguments, we obtain asymptotic expressions for all the even natural moments in the large field limit and large degree limit, as well as an exact expression for the fourth moment.

Abstract:In this paper, we address the problem of bounding conditional expectations when moment information of the underlying distribution and the random event conditioned upon are given. To this end, we propose an adapted version of the generalized moment problem which deals with this conditional information through a simple transformation. By exploiting conic duality, we obtain sharp bounds that can be used for distribution-free decision-making under uncertainty. Additionally, we derive computationally tractable mathematical programs for distributionally robust optimization (DRO) with side information by leveraging core ideas from ambiguity-averse uncertainty quantification and robust optimization, establishing a moment-based DRO framework for prescriptive stochastic programming.
