Abstract:> The a. s. limiting behavior of increments of partial sums for a sequence of random variables has been discussed by many authors. A series of fine and elegant results have been obtained. However, up to now, the results of this kind have all required the existence of moments. In this paper we try to drop this condition. The existing results with moment conditions become special cases of our theorems.

Abstract:Let {Xn;n≥1} be a sequence of independent and identically distributed random variables on a sub-linear expectation space (Ω,ℋ,Ê), Sn=X1+…+Xn. We consider the moments of maxn≥1|Sn|/2nloglogn. The sufficient and necessary conditions for the moments to be finite are given. As an application, we obtain the law of the iterated logarithm for moving average processes of independent and identically distributed random variables.

Abstract:Let {Zn,n≥1} be a sequence of independent nonnegative r.v.’s (random variables) with finite second moments. It is shown that under a Lindeberg-type condition, the αth inverse moment E{a+Xn}−α can be asymptotically approximated by the inverse of the αth moment {a+EXn}−α where a>0,α>0, and {Xn} are the naturally-scaled partial sums. Furthermore, it is shown that, when {Zn} only possess finite rth moments, 1≤r<2, the preceding asymptotic approximation can still be valid by using different norming constants which are the standard deviations of partial sums of suitably truncated {Zn}.

Abstract:In this article we consider questions related to the behavior of the moments $M_{m}\left( \left\{ z_{j}\right\} \right) $ when the indices are restricted to specific subsequences of integers, such as the even or odd moments. If $n\geq2$ we introduce the notion of symmetrical series of order $n,$ showing that if $\left\{ z_{j}\right\} \ $is symmetrical then $M_{m}\left( \left\{ z_{j}\right\} \right) =0$ whenever $n\nmid m;$ in particular, the odd moments of a symmetrical series of order $2$ vanish. We prove that when $\left\{ z_{j}\right\} \in l^{p}$ for some $p$ then several results characterizing the sequence from its moments hold. We show, in particular, that if $M_{m}\left( \left\{ z_{j}\right\} \right) =0$ whenever $n\nmid m$ then $\left\{ z_{j}\right\} $ is a rearrangement of a symmetrical series of order $n.$ We then construct examples of sequences whose moments vanish with required density. Lastly, we construct counterexamples of several of the results valid in the $l^{p}$ case if we allow the moment series to be all conditionally convergent. We show that for each arbitrary sequence of real numbers $\left\{ \mu _{m}\right\} _{m=0}^{\infty}$ there are real sequences $\left\{ u_{j}\right\} _{j=0}^{\infty}$ such that \[ \sum_{j=0}^{\infty}u_{j}^{2m+1}=\mu_{m}\,,\ \ \ m\geq0\,. \]

Quantification of the Fourth Moment Theorem for Cyclotomic Generating Functions

Abstract:This paper deals with sequences of random variables $X_n$ only taking values in $\{0,\ldots,n\}$. The probability generating functions of such random variables are polynomials of degree $n$. Under the assumption that the roots of these polynomials are either all real or all lie on the unit circle in the complex plane, a quantitative normal approximation bound for $X_n$ is established in a unified way. In the real rooted case the result is classical and only involves the variances of $X_n$, while in the cyclotomic case the fourth cumulants or moments of $X_n$ appear in addition. The proofs are elementary and based on the Stein-Tikhomirov method.

The moment problem for random objects in a category

Abstract:The moment problem in probability theory asks for criteria for when there exists a unique measure with a given tuple of moments. We study a variant of this problem for random objects in a category, where a moment is given by the average number of epimorphisms to a fixed object. When the moments do not grow too fast, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for existence of a distribution with those moments, show that a unique such measure exists, give formulas for the measure in terms of the moments, and prove that measures with those limiting moments approach that particular measure. Our result applies to categories satisfying some finiteness conditions and a condition that gives an analog of the second isomorphism theorem, including the categories of finite groups, finite modules, finite rings, as well as many variations of these categories. This work is motivated by the non-abelian Cohen-Lenstra-Martinet program in number theory, which aims to calculate the distribution of random profinite groups arising as Galois groups of maximal unramified extensions of random number fields.

Moments of Gamma type and three-parametric Mittag-Leffler function

Abstract:We study a class of positive random variables having moments of Gamma type, whose density can be expressed by the three-parametric Mittag-Leffler functions. We give some necessary conditions and some sufficient conditions for their existence. As a corollary, we give some conditions for non-negativity of the three-parametric Mittag-Leffler functions. As an application, we study the infinite divisibility of the powers of half $\a$-Cauchy variable. In addition, we find that a random variable $\X$ having moment of Gamma type if and only if $\log \X$ is quasi infinitely divisible. From this perspective, we can solve many Hausdorff moment problems of sequences of factorial ratios.

Abstract:Let {X_ni, 1 ≤ i ≤ m_n, n≥ 1} be an array of independent random variables with uniform distribution on [0, θ _n] , and {X_n(k), k=1, 2, … , m_n} be the k th order statistics of the random variables {X_ni, 1 ≤ i ≤ m_n} . We study the limit properties of ratios {R_nij=X_n(j)/X_n(i), 1≤ i < j ≤ m_n} for fixed sample size m_n=m based on their moment conditions. For 1=i < j ≤ m , we establish the weighted law of large numbers, the complete convergence, and the large deviation principle, and for 2=i < j ≤ m , we obtain some classical limit theorems and self-normalized limit theorems.
The discrepancy in min-max statistics between two random matrices with finite third moments

Abstract:We propose a novel coupling inequality of the min-max type for two random matrices with finite absolute third moments, which generalizes the quantitative versions of the well-known inequalities by Gordon. Previous results have calculated the quantitative bounds for pairs of Gaussian random matrices. Through integrating the methods utilized by Chatterjee-Meckes and Reinert-Röllin in adapting Stein's method of exchangeable pairs for multivariate normal approximation, this study eliminates the Gaussian restriction on random matrices, enabling us to achieve more extensive results.

Abstract:Let Λ be an n -dimensional lattice. For any n -dimensional vector c and positive real number s , let Ds,c and DΛ,s,c denote the continuous Gaussian distribution and the discrete Gaussian distribution over Λ , respectively. In this paper, we establish the exact relationship between the second and fourth moments centered around c of the discrete Gaussian distribution DΛ,s,c and those of the continuous Gaussian distribution Ds,c , respectively. This provides a quantization form of the result obtained by Micciancio and Regev on the second and fourth moments of discrete Gaussian distribution. Using the relationship, we also derive an uncertainty principle for Gaussian functions, which extend the result of Zheng, Zhao, and Xu. Our proof is based on combination of the idea of Micciancio and Regev and the idea of Zheng, Zhao, and Xu, where the main tool is high-dimensional Fourier transform.

Abstract:The moment problem matured from its various special forms in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to a general class of problems that continues to exert profound influence on the development of analysis and its applications to a wide variety of fields. In particular, the theory of systems and control is no exception, where the applications have historically been to circuit theory, optimal control, robust control, signal processing, spectral estimation, stochastic realization theory, and the use of the moments of a probability density. Many of these applications are also still works in progress. In this paper, we consider the generalized moment problem, expressed in terms of a basis of a finite-dimensional subspace P of the Banach space $C[a,b]$ and a “positive” sequence $c$, but with a new wrinkle inspired by the applications to systems and control. We seek to parameterize solutions which are positive “rational” measures in a suitably generalized sense. Our parameterization is given in terms of smooth objects. In particular, the desired solution space arises naturally as a manifold which can be shown to be diffeomorphic to a Euclidean space and which is the domain of some canonically defined functions. The analysis of these functions, and related maps, yields interesting corollaries for the moment problem and its applications, which we compare to those in the recent literature and which play a crucial role in part of our proof.

Abstract:In this paper, we obtain a $p$-th moment bound for the suprema of a log-concave-tailed nonhomogeneous chaos process, which is optimal in some special cases. A crucial ingredient of the proof is a novel decoupling inequality, which may be of independent interest. With this $p$-th moment bound, we show two uniform Hanson-Wright type deviation inequalities for $\alpha$-subexponential entries ($1\le \alpha\le 2$), which recover some known results. As applications, we prove the restricted isometry property of partial random circulant matrices and time-frequency structured random matrices induced by standard $\alpha$-subexponential vectors ($1\le \alpha\le 2$), which extends the previously known results for the subgaussian case.

Abstract:A deep conjecture of Montgomery and Soundararajan on the distribution of prime numbers in short intervals of length $h$ says that the third moment is bounded by $\ll h^{\frac {3}{2}-c}$ for some $c>0$. There is in the literature some conditional evidence towards this conjecture whilst in the first article to this series we gave the first instance of unconditional evidence in the form of a bound corresponding to $\ll h^{7/5+o(1)}$. In this article we push the exponent down to $\ll h^{1+o(1)}$ which more or less is expected to be best possible.
