Abstract:As for the importance of stability problem of the high shiplock slope of the Three Gorges Project, the back analyses for the mechanical parameters of rock masses are proposed by elestic and visco-elasto-plastic model according to the measured and geologic data. With the obtained parameters, the shiplock is analyzed by 3D nonlinear FEM and the monolithic stability and safety are evaluated.

Abstract:SEM tests and double torsion tests are made for the granite samples from Three Gorges Shiplock. The propagation of subcritical fracture is observed and analyzed. Based on these tests, a subcritical fracture deformation model is developed and by using it, a FEM analysis is executed. It is conducted that the time dependent deformation is originated from microfractures and sliding points behavior. The analysis results show that the greater part of deformation will be finished within a year and the shiplock is in a stable state.

Abstract:A new derivation of the three-dimensional (3D) limit equilibrium method for slope stability analyses is presented, which applies linear algebra operations to matrices to achieve a highly efficient algorithm while maintaining the rigorousness of the formulation. It satisfies six equilibrium conditions and includes all of the components of the intercolumnar forces. The generalized 3D Morgenstern-Price's (MP) assumption for the intercolumn forces is recast into incremental forms. The advantage is that the unknowns of the different physical meanings (i.e., factor of safety (FS) and the coefficients in the MP assumption) are determined by balancing the forces and moments independently. Along with the recasting correction coefficients, they are solved with the triple nested algorithm. The numerical instability that is related to the different orders of magnitude for the residuals is avoided. The varication examples show: (i) the insensitivity of the FS to the prescribed functions in the MP assumption, (ii) the reliability of the method to cope with a complicated slope geometry (simplified methods may provide a larger FS for certain cases), and (iii) the superior efficiency of the algorithm (requires several seconds to converge). This study proposes a practical way to track the irregular 3D tension cracking by repeating the analysis and excluding the columns with the negative normal forces at the bottom. This formulation is applied to a valley landfill slope in China. In comparison to the two-dimensional analysis, there are more reasonable/cost-effective measures to increase the system stability through 3D analyses for several conditions (e.g., seismic loading).

Abstract:In this paper, subcritical crack growth of granite at highslope of the Three Gorges shiplock had been studied first. By using dislocation density concept in damage mechanics, rheololgical growth of a crack was generalized into multi-joint rocks, and a rheological damage fracture model for jointed rocks was obtained. Based on this model, the highslope of the shiplock had been analyzed with finite element method. At present, the Three Gorges shiplock has been in construction for about 3 years. The results in this paper were compared with the measurement values, and they coincide with each other very well.

Abstract:A theoretical model is built to calculate the slump of dike head during process of cofferdam construction in river closure operation. Considering flow scours, the depth of scouring zone is estimated and its effect on slump scale can be determined. Using the theoretical model to analyze stability of cofferdam of The Three Gorge Project, slump length and volume of dike head in the river closure operation are predicted. When closure gap is 1 10-80m wide, slump occurs heavily and the maximum slump length of dike head reaches 7m.

Abstract:Safety and stability are the most important considerations during the excavation, as well as in the running period, of a high artificial slope. In this paper, the application of numerical back analysis based on monitoring data for the safety excavation of a large scaled ship-lock of the world well-known Three Gorges Project (TGP) is introduced. The safety monitoring system of the ship-lock and the typical geological condition, the rheologic model and the so-called P-S method used in the back analysis are described. Key points of the evaluation and predication to the safety and stability of the ship-lock rock mass are mentioned. The results show a good coincidence with the measured data of the ship-lock slope.

Abstract:Under the combined effect of rainfall and water level fluctuation,the slope of the reservoir bank is prone to collapse.Ideal elastic-plastic Mohr-Coulomb criterion is used to analyze the stability of reservoir slope,which is difficult to characterize the complex mechanical characteristics of slope soils,such as over consolidation dissipation under wet-dry cycles.It is difficult to analyze the stability of bank slopes under the action of dry and wet cycles to reflect the complex mechanical properties such as overconsolidation and dissipation of slope soils.In this study,focusing on weakly overconsolidated unsaturated red clay at the reservoir bank slope of the Xingan shipping-hydropower junction project in Jiangxi Province,unsaturated direct shear tests were conducted and an overconsolidated unified hardening(UH)model for red clay was constructed.The UH model incorporates the mathematical-physical relationship between suction stress and matric suction using the arctangent function.Subsequently,based on the UH model,an application program of FLAC3D was developed in C++.The SEEP/W module of GeoStudio software was employed to compute the unsaturated seepage field during the rainfall infiltration,and an interface program was created to import FLAC3D data for stability calculations of the reservoir slope.Comparisons between the horizontal displacements obtained from the improved UH model and the classical unsaturated elastic-plastic model revealed significantly larger displacements in the former,suggesting that the improved UH model can provide reasonable predictions of the overconsolidated unsaturated red clay for reservoir slope stability.This research offers valuable insights for similar projects involving analyses of reservoir bank slope.

Abstract:3D numerical simulation with nonlinear large-deformation is conducted for a high rock slope engineering with typical antidip laminate structure. A intake dam attached to high slope and four intake tunnels under the dam are simulated simultaneously, and the complicated geological factors, support measures and excavation conditions of the slope are also taken into account. The influence of excavation unloading, dam generating and reservoir filling on the deformation and stress distribution of the slope is studied with numerical model.

Abstract:The highway always goes through the goafs.The goafs exert significant impact on the cut slope stability.FLAC3D is based on finite difference method,it has powerful function to simulate the rock and soil behavior.In this paper,take a national traffic program for example,FLAC3D is used to analysis the stress and displacement of the highway cut slope with goafs after grouting and anchoring.The results show that the cut slope is stable after groutal and reinforced and FLAC3D is feasible to evaluate the stability of the highway cut slope with goafs.

Abstract:Numerical simulation is one of the effective methods to analyze the stability of geotechnical engineer.The finite difference software FLAC3D(Fast Lagrangian Analysis of Continua in 3 Dimensions) was applied to establish a 3D-mesh model and a fluid-solid model of an iron mine tailing pond,and the constitutive relation of tailings was described by the Mohr-Coulomb model to analyze the stability of tailing dam under earthquake.The results indicate that the tailing pond has been on the whole stable under strong earthquake,except some partial liquefaction which can possibly lead to breaking.And the most active area of tailing pond is in the edge of dam base or dam crest.The results also show that it is feasible to analyze the overall stability of tailing pond under earthquake action by means of FLAC3D,which provides an access to analyze some dynamic problems of tailing pond.

Abstract:The construction and excavation process of underground plant of the Shuibuya Project are simulated by three-dimensional fast Lagrangian method(FLAC-3D). The pattern of deformation caused by excavation and stress state in surrounding rocks of the chamber group under complex geological conditions are researched. The distribution of plastic areas and the stability of surrounding rocks are analyzed. And the bolting is performed to support the vault of tail-race tubes.

Abstract:The shear strength reduction is combined with fast lagrangian analysis of continuum method(FLAC)to analyze the stability of soil slope,and the FLAC software post-processing fuction to dynamic demonstrate is used in generalizing shear strain increment,plastic area's occurrence and development situation.Moreover,convergence of statics equilibrium algorithm,mutation of displacement on characteristic position of slope as well as continuum of shear strain increment are used as criterion to estimate the stability of slope.The critical slip surface can be obtained when the slope become unstable.The method can vividly forecast the latent critical slip surface and evaluate the stability of soil slope by analyzing the international calculated example.

Abstract:The concerns over the left dam section stability on potential deep seated rock discontinuities presented one of the key technical problems of the Three Gorges Project. The authors’ research group conducted a field survey that collected nearly 2000 discontinuities and a joint mapping technique with a conclusion that the join persistency ratio along the dominating sear direction is about 70%. The author also found that the ‘method of identical K ’ specified in the code for dam foundation stability analysis is equivalent to the upper bound, or Sarma’s method, thus, a generalized ‘method of identical K ’ is made possible for this project that has composite shape of slip surfaces. Further, stability analyses based on reliability index and partial factors have been performed to provide an in-depth study on this stability analysis problem. The 2D study indicated that for two cases of failure modes the designed section unit 3 satisfies the requirement for allowable factor of safety if the dam and powerhouse are connected to withstand the water pressure. However, if the powerhouse is designed to be separated to the dam, both cases cannot meet the requirement. As an in-depth study, the authors further provide the reliability indices and factors of safety based on the partial factors associated with the above-mentioned cases, giving the same conclusions. The information obtained from the field measured data confirmed the safe performance of the dam.

Abstract:The existence of the weak interlayer of the rock slope changes its mechanical characteristics. To ensure the safety of the slope, it is necessary to analyze the overall stability of the slope. Taking the double-layer weak interlayer rock slope beside 318 National Road in Qiyue Mountain, Hubei Province, as an example, a slope model with a weak interlayer was established through GTS software, and the model was imported into FLAC3D for calculation, and the deformation of the slope by the double-layer soft interlayer was studied. The influence of characteristics and safety factors reveals the controlling effect of the double-layer weak interlayer on the stability of the slope and its failure mode. The potential sliding surface of the slope is determined to be the lower weak interlayer, and the weak interlayer after the anchor cable reinforcement is carried out. Numerical analysis shows that the reasonable application of anchor cables significantly improves slope stability. The research results can provide reference significance for slope stability analysis of similar projects.

Abstract:The water level of the Yangtze River Three Gorges Reservoir is adjusted periodically, and the stability of the slide masses on both banks is affected seriously. Against the background of the Three Gorges projects, the influence of drawdown speed of water level on the stability of slide mass was analyzed. The variation of the slide mass stability during the drawdown period was calculated and analyzed considering the seepage fields. Through numerical calculation, the relationships between the slide mass stability, hydraulic conductivity and water level drawdown speed were obtained. It might have some reference value for the study on slope stability in reservoir districts.

Abstract:The fast Lagrangian analysis of continua in three dimensions(FLAC3D) was adopted based on nonlinear finite element analysis,to develop three-dimensional elastoplastic numerical simulation of Wudongde arch dam.Nine possible sliding blocks were determined through the altitude of discrete fracture inside the arch dam rock mass.The calculation method of the experiment was to apply the finite element stress value to the sliding face through interpolation,discount sliding face shearing strength based on the altitude of discrete fracture inside the sliding face,and compute the factor of safety through 3D vector sum method.The results indicate that the stress and displacement distributions are basically symmetrical to the river valley.However,affected by the faults F15,f42and the K25karst system,there is a slightly larger area affected in right abutment than that in left abutment.The results also show that the nine sliding blocks have high margin of safety under normal impounding level;temperature rise load causes the stability reduction of a majority of wedge blocks,while temperature drop load mainly affects the stability of right abutment negatively.Under the seismic load,the stabilities of all the wedge blocks reduce largely with an average reduction of 30% and the maximum reduction of 53.9%.However,the global abutments rock mass can still remain stable under such situation.

Abstract:Fluctuating water levels are responsible for many reservoir slope failures. This work develops a novel slope analysis model (Y-slopeW) to evaluate the reservoir slope stability under water–rock coupling effect, based on the combined finite-discrete element method (FDEM). The transient fluid fields under water level fluctuations are first calculated, and then slope stability under water–rock interaction is evaluated in terms of the safety factor using the strength reduction method. Several benchmark tests are proposed to validate the present model. Stability analysis of an ideal slope under reservoir water level fluctuation is analyzed, where the effect of reservoir fluctuation rate and rock permeability coefficient on slope stability are discussed in detail. A practical slope case (Majiagou slope) in the Three Gorges Reservoir area is studied. Results show that the fluctuating reservoir water level plays an important role in slope stability, and a rapid drawdown is the most unfavorable condition to the slope stability. The work detailed herein proposes an efficient tool to better understand the failure mechanism and stability evolution for slopes under water level fluctuation.

Abstract:The potential landslide of the Jinling gold mine and its geological conditions are studied systematically.The FLAC3Dsoftware is used to simulate the slope instability and its dynamic process and to determine the landslide model.The evaluation of potential landslide stability is analyzed,based on the strength reduction method.The slope stability is calculated by referring to the formula that is derived from the standard.Our conclusion is useful for similar landslide stability evaluation.The simulation results show that the FLAC3Dsoftware has a realistic significance for the evaluation of landslide stability.
