Abstract:A Mach–Zehnder silicon photonic switch with low random phase errors is proposed and demonstrated for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, by incorporating judiciously widened and shortened phase shifter waveguides. With a 180 nm complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (CMOS) foundry process, more than one hundred 2 × 2 thermo-optic Mach–Zehnder switches (MZSs) with varied phase shifter widths have been designed, fabricated, and characterized on 14 silicon chips. The mean and standard deviation of the random phase errors of the MZSs with phase shifters widened to 2 µm are less than a third of those of the conventional design with 0.45-µm-wide single-mode phase shifters. This validates the improved fabrication tolerance and results in considerable reduction of the power consumption for the phase error compensation. Such elegant methodology paves the way to further scaling up N × N silicon thermo-optic switches and can be generalized for other phase-sensitive integrated photonic devices as well.

Abstract:A novel improved wide-spectrum Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) electro-optic (EO) switch is proposed by using two phase generating couplers (PGC) instead of two directional couplers (DC). With the proposed nonlinear least square optimization method, the PGC structure is optimized, and the phase-shift variation resulting from the wavelength variation is sufficiently compensated. Under the central wavelength of 1550 nm, the driving voltages of the designed switch are as low as about 0 (on state) and ±0.925 V (off state) with an EO region length of 5 mm. A wide spectrum more than 250 nm (1430~1680 nm) is achieved, and within this wavelength range, the insertion loss under on state is less than 5.91 dB, and the extinction ratio between on state and off state is larger than 30 dB. Under the same extinction ratio level, the output spectrum of this device is about 5 times of that of the traditional MZI EO switch with two 3 dB DC (about 50 nm), and is nearly 3 times of that of our previous reported asymmetric MZI EO switch using only one PGC (about 85 nm). The proposed wide-spectrum device structure exhibits potential wide applications in optical exchange and optical routing in wavelength division multiplexing systems.

Abstract:We report on the first 2×2 GaAs asymmetric Mach–Zehnder interferential switch. The mechanism of this device is analyzed. Instead of using Y branches, two asymmetric X junctions have been utilized in the switch. The device is characterized by a switching voltage of 12.5 V and a crosstalk ratio of less than −22 dB at an operating wavelength of 1.15 μm. It is shown that this device could be applied to switching arrays.

Abstract:Large-scale photonic switches are essential components for photonic circuits for classical and quantum applications. To develop high-performance large-scale photonic switches, we propose and demonstrate a low-loss, C+L+S-band (1460–1625 nm), and low-random-phase-imbalance 2 × 2 Mach-Zehnder switch (MZS) designed with fast quasi-adiabatic couplers (FACs). The FAC is designed to accelerate slow adiabatic evolutions by a tailored geometry tilt, and further optimized by the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. It features a simulated uniform splitting ratio that varies between 52.5%:47.5% and 47.9%:52.1% with a low excess loss of 0.020–0.054 dB across the C+L+S band. To achieve a large operation bandwidth of the MZS, 1-μm width phase shifters are implemented to reduce the wavelength dependence of the half-wave heating power Q π of the thermo-optic (TO) phase shifter. They also suppress random phase imbalance caused by the size variations in fabrication between the MZS arms. The simulated excess loss and extinction ratio of the present MZS are <0.13 dB and >22.6 dB across C+L+S band. Such an MZS has been fabricated with standard 180-nm silicon photonic foundry processes, featuring a low excess loss of ∼0.25 dB and an extinction ratio of >17 dB across the C+L+S band. Meanwhile, an extinction ratio of >20 dB is achieved across a slightly narrower bandwidth, 1470–1617 nm, with an excess loss of ∼0.2 dB. The MZS is an attractive option for scaling up N × N MZSs, which would be beneficial for large-scale and ultrahigh-capacity WDM and BDM telecom and interconnect applications, as well as on-chip near-infrared spectrometers.

It can simultaneously operate at multiple different wavelengths at the distance of times of FSR as a comb filter and without wavelength blocking during switching.

Abstract:A kind of Mach-Zehnder optical switch with a dual-bus coupled ring resonator as a two-beam interferometer is proposed and investigated. The analysis based on the transfer matrix method shows that a sharp asymmetric Fano line shape can be generated in the transmission spectra of such a configuration, which can be used to significantly reduce the phase change required for switching. Meanwhile, it can also be found that complete extinctions can be achieved in both switching states if the structural parameters are carefully chosen and the phase bias is properly set. Through tuning the phase difference between the arms of the Mach-Zehnder interferometer, complete extinction can be easily kept within a large range of the ring-bus coupling ratios in the OFF state. By properly modulating the phase change in the ring waveguide, the shift of the resonant frequency and the asymmetry of the transmission spectra can be controlled to finally enable optical switching with a high extinction ratio, even complete extinction, in the ON state. The switching functionality is verified by the finite-difference time-domain simulation.

Abstract:A low-loss and broadband silicon thermo-optic switch is proposed and demonstrated experimentally by using a Mach-Zehnder Interferometer with 2 x 2 3 dB power splitters based on bent directional couplers (DCs). The bent DCs are introduced here to replace the traditional 2 x 2 3 dB power splitters based on multimode interferometers or straight DCs, so that one achieves a coupling ratio of similar to 50%: 50%, as well as low excess loss over a broadband. The demonstrated Mach-Zehnder switch (MZS) has a similar to 140 nm bandwidth for an excess loss of <1 dB and an extinction ratio of >20 dB. The present MZS also shows excellent reproducibility and good fabrication tolerance, which makes it promising for realizing N x N optical switches. (C) 2016 Optical Society of America

Abstract:A thermooptic switch With a symmetric Mach-Zehnder interferometer structure was demonstrated with silicon photonic-crystal-slab line-defect waveguides. The device size was as small as 160 x 65 mu m. The optic switch operated at a wavelength of 1550 nm, and an extinction ratio greater than 30 dB was obtained by 120-mW heating (switching) power over the wavelength range of 15 nm. The switching ON-OFF response times were about 120 mu s.

Abstract:A dual-driving polymer Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) electro-optic switch is designed and optimized, which consists of a phase-generating coupler (PGC) and a 3-dB directional coupler. Structural schematics and principles of the PGC and the switch are described. Novel formulas of the switching time are presented. Under the central operation wavelength of 1550 nm, simulation for the designed device shows that the push-pull switching voltage is 2.445 V, the switching time is 18.1 ps, and the cross talk is less than −30 dB. By optimizing the PGC structure, the phase error resulting from the wavelength shift can be compensated effectively, and a wide spectrum about 110 nm can be achieved. The proposed analytical technique on waveguides and electrodes proves to be accurate and computationally efficient when compared with the beam propagation method (BPM) and the experimental results.

Abstract:A non‐volatile electrically reconfigurable 2 × 2 MZI integrated with a low‐loss phase‐change material Sb2Se3 encapsulated in Al2O3 layers is reported. The phase change is electrically actuated by a forward‐biased silicon p‐i‐n diode. The switch extinction ratio is more than 20 dB. More than 10 000 reversible phase‐change cycles and 6‐bit multilevel switching states are achieved. Mach–Zehnder interferometers (MZIs) integrated with phase‐change materials have attracted great interest due to their low power consumption and ultra‐compact size, which are favored for reconfigurable photonic processors. However, they suffer from a low optical extinction ratio and limited switching cycles due to high material loss and poor reversible repeatability caused by material degradation. Here a non‐volatile electrically reconfigurable 2 × 2 MZI integrated with a low‐loss phase‐change material Sb2Se3 encapsulated in Al2O3 layers is demonstrated. The phase change is electrically actuated by a forward‐biased silicon p‐i‐n diode. The switch extinction ratio is more than 20 dB due to the low‐loss Sb2Se3‐based phase shifter. By dividing the Sb2Se3 patch into small sub‐cells to restrict the material reflow, more than 10 000 reversible phase‐change cycles and 6‐bit multilevel switching states are achieved by programming the electrical pulses. Its non‐volatility, high endurance, and fine‐tuning capability makes the device promising in large‐scale low‐power reconfigurable photonic processors.

Abstract:We present an all-optical switch based on photothermal effects in a silicon Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) integrated with a light absorber. The metal-insulator-metal light absorber located near the longer arm of the asymmetric MZI efficiently converts infrared light to heat. Pumped by a continuous-wave 1064-nm laser, the spectral transmittance of the fully etched strip waveguide (half-etched rib waveguide) MZI can be tuned with an efficiency of 38 pm/mW (98.5 pm/mW). Dynamic switching experiments show that the rise/fall time constant of the output probe light is 11.45/10.98 μs (8.25/7.13 μs) for the fully etched (half-etched) MZI.
