Abstract:Multi-stage compression system need the transfer switch work stably under input pulse. A pulsed gas switch was tested under pulse with ~100ns rise time to verify its breakdown characteristics as operating gas pressure varied from 0.1MPa to 0.7MPa in N2. Front edge breakdown, back edge breakdown and no-breakdown phenomena all occurred and it was hardly possible to obtain high transfer efficiency and stability simultaneously under self-breakdown mode. Breakdown time delay could be managed to stabilize around ~95ns to obtain a high transfer efficiency and its jitter can be reduced to 2ns~4ns when a self-triggered pre-ionization gap was adapted to generate initial electrons. However, pre-ionization was invalid when the gas pressure was lower than 0.4MPa, which might be due to the untimely breakdown of trigger gap. As statistical time delay jitter is proved to be the major source of switch jitter, a modified analytical model based on Logistic model is utilized to analyze the role of initial electrons with different number and generated at different time. The calculated result indicates that initial electrons can hardly increase until electric field is high enough to initiate an electron avalanche. The voltage division ratio between main gap and trigger gap can be adjusted and the metal plane for shielding main gap electric field can be modified to make sure that the pre-ionization is effective.
