Abstract:Liquid-phase exfoliation of two-dimensional materials is very attractive for large-scale applications. Although used extensively, isolating MoS2 layers (<10) with high efficiency is reported to be extremely difficult. Further, the importance of soaking has not yet been studied, and the surfactants' role in stabilizing MoS2 nanosheets is poorly understood1. Herein, we report a novel approach to exfoliating large quantities of MoS2 via high-pressure (HP) liquid-phase exfoliation (LPE) in deionized (DI) water. 4 to 7 layers of MoS2 nanosheets were obtained from 60 days-soaked samples and they were found to be stable in solvents for periods of up to six months. Studies on the effect of three surfactants, namely sodium dodecyl benzenesulfonate (SDBS), sodium cholate (SC), and tetra-butyl ammonium bromide (TBAB), indicate that exfoliation of MoS2 nanosheets in SDBS is highly efficient than the other two surfactants. The estimated yield reaches up to 7.25%, with a nanosheet concentration of 1.45 mg/ml, which is one of the highest ever reported. Our studies also suggest that the nanosheets' concentration and the lateral size depend on exfoliation cycles, applied pressure and surfactant concentration. Hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and ion-transport study show that the nanosheets prepared by our method are stable in an acidic medium and free from surfactants. A high hydrogen evolution rate of 30.13 mmol g-1 h-1 was estimated under ambient laboratory conditions.

Abstract:Mechanical exfoliation is a facile way for the preparation of two-dimensional (2D) nanoflakes. However, the quality of obtained flakes still needs to be further improved, e.g., the exfoliated size and production yield, which plays a crucial role in practical applications. Here, solvent-assisted method is proposed by introducing chemical solvents in the exfoliations. The impacts of wrinkles and defects existed in the outmost layer of bulk MoS 2 crystal are overcome due to the capillary and diffusion forces driven by solvent molecules underlying flakes. Hence, the size and yield of nanoflakes are promoted manifestly. The MoS 2 nanoflakes are obtained with the largest area of ~ 1.5 mm 2 that is three orders of magnitude bigger than conventional mechanical exfoliation. In addition, the characterizations verify the existence of monolayer which may exhibit intrinsic properties of the MoS 2 flakes. Subsequently, MoS 2 field-effect transistors are conveniently fabricated by one-step mechanical shadow-mask process. The field-effect mobility of ~ 26 cm 2 V −1 s −1 and on/off ratio of ~ 10 6 are achieved. All results indicate that the solvent-assisted exfoliations provide a universal path in the preparation of 2D nanoflakes, which is a fundamental support for the studies of 2D materials and devices.

Abstract:Exfoliation of lamellar materials into their corresponding layers represented a breakthrough, due to the outstanding properties arising from the nanometric thickness confinement. Among the cleavage techniques, liquid-phase exfoliation is now on the rise because it is scalable and leads to easy-to-manipulate colloids. However, all appropriate exfoliating solvents exhibit strong polarity, which restrains a lot the scope of feasible functionalization or processing of the resulting flakes. Here we propose to extend this scope, demonstrating that nanosheets exfoliated in a polar medium can be properly dispersed in a non-polar solvent. To that purpose, we prepared suspensions of molybdenum disulfide flakes in isopropanol/water and developed a phase transfer of the nanosheets to chloroform via precipitation and redispersion/centrifugation sequences, without any assisting surfactant. The colloidal stability of the nanosheets in chloroform was found to be governed by their lateral dimensions and, although lower than in polar media, proved to be high enough to open the way to subsequent functionalization or processing of the flakes in non-polar medium.

Abstract:Liquid-phase exfoliation (LPE) has been shown to be capable of producing large quantities of high-quality dispersions suitable for processing into subsequent applications. LPE typically requires surfactants for aqueous dispersions or organic solvents with high boiling point. However, they have major drawbacks such as toxicity, aggregation during solvent evaporation or the presence of residues. Here, dispersions of molybdenum disulfide in acetone are prepared and show much higher concentration and stability than predicted by Hansen parameter analysis. Aiming to understand these enhanced properties, the nanosheets were characterised using UV-visible spectroscopy, zeta potential measurements, atomic force microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning transmission microscopy combined with spatially-resolved electron energy loss spectroscopy. Also, the performance of the MoS2 nanosheets exfoliated in acetone was compared to that of those exfoliated in isopropanol as a catalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction. The conclusion from the chemical characterisation was that MoS2 nanosheets exfoliated in acetone have an oxygen edge functionalisation, in the form of molybdenum oxides, changing its interaction with solvents and explaining the observed high-quality and stability of the resulting dispersion in a low boiling point solvent. Exfoliation in acetone could potentially be applied as a pretreatment to modify the solubility of MoS2 by edge functionalisation.

Abstract:MoS2 and WS2 have gathered significant attention due to their interesting and tunable properties and their wide range of applications. Liquid phase exfoliation (LPE) is a common and facile method to prepare 2D MoS2 and WS2. Currently, the principally employed solvents for LPE of MoS2 and WS2 are expensive, toxic and have high boiling points. These drawbacks encourage to find more sustainable alternatives to the liquid medium used for the preparation of 2D material inks. Water would be the best option, but surfactants are necessary for LPE in water, since MoS2 and WS2 are hydrophobic. Organic molecules with amphoteric character such as sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS) and sodium hexyl sulfonate (SHS) are selected as suitable candidates for the role of surfactant. However, the study of these surfactants used in LPE is barely systematically reported. In this work, we present a detailed investigation on the impact of these surfactants on the LPE of MoS2 and WS2, which are representatives of TMDs. By characterizing and qualifying the products from average number of layers, we find that all the surfactants work efficiently to exfoliate MoS2 and WS2 into few layers, and SHS stabilizes the 2D layers better than the other two surfactants. However, in terms of yield and relative surfactant concentration, we don't identify a real trade‐off between maximized quantity of exfoliated materials and minimized surfactant concentration, which prompts to select the colloidal ink based on the specific further needs for processing. Abstract:Spontaneous exfoliation of MoS2 is achieved in H2O2-NMP mixed solvents with a yield of over 60 wt%, operated under mild conditions. H2O2-prompted sheet-tailoring effect induces a size evolution of MoS2 nanosheets from micro-scale to nano-scale. Furthermore, the concurrent dissolution also affords an approach to introduce structural defects in the nanosheets.

Abstract:Liquid-phase exfoliation has been widely used to obtain 2D nanomaterials from layered or non-layered solids. Most reports have focused on exfoliation procedures using aqueous solutions of passivating agents, functionalized materials in water, or pristine materials in 'good' organic solvents. Herein, we highlight the third method applied to carbon nanomaterials because it results in stable and concentrated systems without any other additives, and the deposited materials form conductive patterns after solvent drying without the need for post-treatments like (electro)chemical reduction or removal of passivating agents. Good solvents for exfoliating pristine materials have been ascribed as having the 'correct' match of Hansen solubility parameters. Although this approach successfully enhances the yield in terms of mass concentration, it does not explain the high stability of dispersions prepared in liquids ascribed as 'bad' solvents or some properties observed for exfoliated materials in both 'good' and 'bad' ones, like sedimentation. In this review, we have reinterpreted organic dispersions of pristine carbon materials using concepts of Colloidal Chemistry, which can explain many poorly understood properties and guide new improvements in this area.

Abstract:A wide variety of two-dimensional layered materials are synthesized by liquid-phase exfoliation. Here we examine exfoliation of MoS2 into nanosheets in a mixture of water and isopropanol (IPA) containing cavitation bubbles. Using force fields optimized with experimental data on interfacial energies between MoS2 and the solvent, multimillion-atom molecular dynamics simulations are performed in conjunction with experiments to examine shock-induced collapse of cavitation bubbles and the resulting exfoliation of MoS2. The collapse of cavitation bubbles generates high-speed nanojets and shock waves in the solvent. Large shear stresses due to the nanojet impact on MoS2 surfaces initiate exfoliation, and shock waves reflected from MoS2 surfaces enhance exfoliation. Structural correlations in the solvent indicate that shock induces an ice VII like motif in the first solvation shell of water.

Abstract:A proper design of direct liquid phase exfoliation (LPE) for 2D materials as graphene, MoS2 , WS2 , h-BN, Bi2 Se3 , MoSe2 , SnS2 , and TaS2 with common cosolvents is carried out based on considering the polar and dispersive components of surface tensions of various cosolvents and 2D materials. It has been found that the exfoliation efficiency is enhanced by matching the ratio of surface tension components of cosolvents to that of the targeted 2D materials, based on which common cosolvents composed of IPA/water, THF/water, and acetone/water can be designed for sufficient LPE process. In this context, the library of low-toxic and low-cost solvents with low boiling points for LPE is infinitely enlarged when extending to common cosolvents. Polymer-based composites reinforced with a series of different 2D materials are compared with each other. It is demonstrated that the incorporation of cosolvents-exfoliated 2D materials can substantially improve the mechanical and thermal properties of polymer matrices. Typically, with the addition of 0.5 wt% of such 2D material as MoS2 nanosheets, the tensile strength and Young's modulus increased up to 74.85% and 136.97%, respectively. The different enhancement effect of 2D materials is corresponded to the intrinsic properties and LPE capacity of 2D materials.

Abstract:Complete exfoliation bulk MoS2 to 2D nanosheets has been efficiently achieved by the facile NaCl-assisted liquid-phase refluxing and ultrasonication exfoliation method. The obtained nanosheets have good dispersion and stability in aqueous solutions, and exhibit efficiently photocatalytic activity for removing aqueous antibiotic residues under visible light. The present work provides a new approach to achieve completely exfoliated 2D nanosheets for the photocatalytic removal of refractory pollutants.

Abstract:In this study, a facile and scalable method for synthesizing MoSe2 nanomaterial via a sonication-assisted liquid-phase exfoliation method is proposed. This study shows the successful synthesis of few-layered MoSe2 in various solvents including DI water, ethanol, N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP), Dimethylformamide (DMF) and Dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO). The exfoliated nanosheets have remarkably different properties than bulk MoSe2 which were studied using Field emission scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and UV-Vis spectroscopy to investigate their morphology, functional groups, structure and optical properties, respectively. The mean values of the number of layers from an optical extinction spectrum based on the effect of edge and quantum confinement were also calculated. Abstract:Large-scale production of boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs) is of significant importance for their various applications. Herein, a facile strategy is well demonstrated for BNNS fabrication via liquid-phase exfoliation of bulk hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) in common organic solvents with hyperbranched polyethylene (HBPE) as stabilizer. Synthesized from commercially abundant ethylene stock via a simple process, the HBPE is found to effectively promote h-BN exfoliation both in tetrahydrofuran and chloroform under sonication, to render stable dispersions of high-quality monolayer or few-layer BNNSs with adjustable concentrations. This has been confirmed to originate from the noncovalent CH- interactions between the HBPE and BNNS surface, which results in irreversible HBPE adsorption on the latter to effectively prevent their reaggregation. The resultant HBPE-functionalized BNNSs are highly dispersible in chloroform or N,N-dimethylformamide at a concentration as high as 10.0 mg mL(-1), and can be successfully used as nanofiller for a fluorinated copolymer.
High-efficiency exfoliation of layered materials into 2D nanosheets in switchable CO2/Surfactant/H2O system

Abstract:AbstractLayered materials present attractive and important properties due to their two-dimensional (2D) structure, allowing potential applications including electronics, optoelectronics and catalysis. However, fully exploiting the outstanding properties will require a method for their efficient exfoliation. Here we present that a series of layered materials can be successfully exfoliated into single- and few-layer nanosheets using the driving forces coming from the phase inversion, i.e., from micelles to reverse micelles in the emulsion microenvironment built by supercritical carbon dioxide (SC CO2). The effect of variable experimental parameters including CO2 pressure, ethanol/water ratio and initial concentration of bulk materials on the exfoliation yield have been investigated. Moreover, we demonstrate that the exfoliated 2D nanosheets have their worthwhile applications, for example, graphene can be used to prepare conductive paper, MoS2 can be used as fluorescent label to perform cellular labelling and BN can effectively reinforce polymers leading to the promising mechanical properties.

Liquid-Phase Exfoliation of 3D Metal-Organic Frameworks into Nanosheets

Abstract:Traditionally, the acquisition of 2D materials involved the exfoliation of layered crystals. However, the anisotropic bonding arrangements within 3D crystals indicate they are mechanically reminiscent of 2D counterparts and could also be exfoliated into nanosheets. This report delineates the preparation of 2D nanosheets from six representative 3D metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) through liquid-phase exfoliation. Notably, the cleavage planes of exfoliated nanosheets align perpendicular to the direction of the minimum elastic modulus (Emin) within the pristine 3D frameworks. The findings suggest that the in-plane and out-of-plane bonding forces of the exfoliated nanosheets can be correlated with the maximum elastic modulus (Emax) and Emin of the 3D frameworks, respectively. Emax influences the ease of cleaving adjacent layers, while Emin governs the ability to resist cracking of layers. Hence, a combination of large Emax and small Emin indicates an efficient exfoliation process, and vice versa. The ratio of Emax/Emin, denoted as Amax/min, is adopted as a universal index to quantify the ease of mechanical exfoliation for 3D MOFs. This ratio, readily accessible through mechanical experiments and computation, serves as a valuable metric for selecting appropriate exfoliation methods to produce surfactant-free 2D nanosheets from various 3D materials.

Abstract:MoS2/reduce graphene oxide composites were synthesized using hydrothermal method by varying three different surfactants like Cetyltrimethyl Ammonium Bromide (CTAB), Sodium Dodecyl Sulfonate (SDS) and TritonX-100 (TX-100). SEM images of the composites show different morphologies. The specific surface area and electrochemical performance are largely dependent on the morphologies of the composites. The MSG/CTAB composites exhibit the largest surface area (133 m(2).g(-1)) and the highest specific capacitance of 1022 F.g(-1) at a current density of 0.3 A.g(-1)among the studied composites. This composite is very promising for application in energy storage and other electrochemical devices.

Abstract:Exfoliation of two-dimensional (2D) materials into mono- or few layers is of significance for both fundamental studies and potential applications. In this report, for the first time surface tension components were directly probed and matched to predict solvents with effective liquid phase exfoliation (LPE) capability for 2D materials such as graphene, h-BN, WS2, MoS2, MoSe2, Bi2Se3, TaS2, and SnS2. Exfoliation efficiency is enhanced when the ratios of the surface tension components of the applied solvent is close to that of the 2D material in question. We enlarged the library of low-toxic and common solvents for LPE. Our study provides distinctive insight into LPE and has pioneered a rational strategy for LPE of 2D materials with high yield.
Tuning the Liquid-Phase Exfoliation of Arsenic Nanosheets by Interaction with Various Solvents

Abstract:The interaction between monolayered arsenene and fourteen kinds of solvents is found to be correlated with the extent of charge transfer from arsenene to the solvents by density functional theory calculations. Among them, three kinds of aprotic solvents (cyclohexane, tetrahydrofuran and chloroform), representing different adsorbability with arsenene, were selected to exfoliate bulk arsenic crystals into nanosheets in experiments. The as-prepared concentrations of the three dispersions vary monotonically with the calculated adsorption energies and charge transfer per contact area. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) characterization and size distribution analyses manifested that the lateral size distributions of the exfoliated arsenic nanosheets ranged from 100 nm to 1050 nm. This strategy shows the potential usage in liquid-phase exfoliation of multi-layered materials due to the interaction effects between the solvents and the surface of the materials.

Herein, we use a thermoresponsive polymeric ionic liquid (TRPIL) as a universal polymer surfactant to assist the high-efficiency exfoliation of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), graphite, and hexagonal boron nitride in an aqueous medium through consecutive sonication. In this case, the reliable interaction between 2D materials and the TRPIL would facilitate the exfoliation and simultaneously achieve a noncovalent functionalization of the exfoliated nanosheets. Interestingly, the dispersion stability of exfoliated nanosheet suspensions can be reversibly tuned by temperature because of the thermoresponsive phase transition behavior of the TRPIL. As a proof of potential applications, a temperature and photo-dual-responsive TRPIL/MoS2 coloring hydrogel with robust mechanical property and an artificial nacre-like BN nanosheet film with high thermal conductivity were fabricated.
