Abstract:The preparation of nanoparticles can be conducted in a fast way by intensifying the micromixing due to the enhanced turbulence in an impinging jet Reactor (IJR) where the two linear liquid jets collide with high velocity to diminish the segregation. However, the micromixing is significantly affected by the occurrence of the stagnant region which may partially choke the reaction chamber. By imposing the ultrasound to the IJR, micro-scale turbulent eddies generated as the result of collapse of ultrasonically generated micro cavitation bubbles may generate a strong local shear. Such micro-scale turbulent vortices exert shear on the interface between the particles and surrounding fluid, resulting in uniform particle morphology and high surface area for chemical reaction. The paper aims to optimize the ultrasonic intensification effect on synthesis of nano-sized particles with desired homogeneity, reveal the governing mechanisms and present a kinetic model to describe the multiphase flow dynamics in the IJR. Except for the experimental method, numerical method was also used to demonstrate the impact of fluid dynamics on particle synthesis.
Solvent-assisted exfoliation for high-quality molybdenum disulfide nanoflakes and relevant field-effect transistors

Abstract:Mechanical exfoliation is a facile way for the preparation of two-dimensional (2D) nanoflakes. However, the quality of obtained flakes still needs to be further improved, e.g., the exfoliated size and production yield, which plays a crucial role in practical applications. Here, solvent-assisted method is proposed by introducing chemical solvents in the exfoliations. The impacts of wrinkles and defects existed in the outmost layer of bulk MoS 2 crystal are overcome due to the capillary and diffusion forces driven by solvent molecules underlying flakes. Hence, the size and yield of nanoflakes are promoted manifestly. The MoS 2 nanoflakes are obtained with the largest area of ~ 1.5 mm 2 that is three orders of magnitude bigger than conventional mechanical exfoliation. In addition, the characterizations verify the existence of monolayer which may exhibit intrinsic properties of the MoS 2 flakes. Subsequently, MoS 2 field-effect transistors are conveniently fabricated by one-step mechanical shadow-mask process. The field-effect mobility of ~ 26 cm 2 V −1 s −1 and on/off ratio of ~ 10 6 are achieved. All results indicate that the solvent-assisted exfoliations provide a universal path in the preparation of 2D nanoflakes, which is a fundamental support for the studies of 2D materials and devices.

Abstract:A simple and large-scale method to prepare molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nano-flakes by the sonication of its bulk material in an acid aqueous solution of chitosan (CS) was developed. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images suggested that the MoS2 was exfoliated into few-layer or mono-layer thin sheets. Specifically, MoS2 dispersion was directly employed to fabricate the chitosan/MoS2 composites. The results obtained from the TEM images and X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns showed that the MoS2 flakes were homogeneously dispersed in the composites at an appropriate content. The tensile test, dynamic mechanical analysis and thermogravimetric analysis results indicated that the mechanical and thermal properties of CS films were remarkably improved by the incorporation of MoS2, which was attributed to the well dispersion state and the reinforcing effect of the MoS2 nanofillers with unique two-dimensional (2D) structure.

Abstract:Complete exfoliation bulk MoS2 to 2D nanosheets has been efficiently achieved by the facile NaCl-assisted liquid-phase refluxing and ultrasonication exfoliation method. The obtained nanosheets have good dispersion and stability in aqueous solutions, and exhibit efficiently photocatalytic activity for removing aqueous antibiotic residues under visible light. The present work provides a new approach to achieve completely exfoliated 2D nanosheets for the photocatalytic removal of refractory pollutants.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has drawn increasing attention due to its great potential for advanced electronics, photonics, optoelectronics, energy storage, catalysis and solar cell. However, high effective exfoliation for the mass production of 2D MoS2 is still a challenge. To improve the exfoliation efficiency of MoS2 nanosheets, a facile liquid-phase exfoliation strategy has been developed by using organic electrolyte solutions in this work. It is shown that the dispersion concentration of MoS2 nanosheets has been significantly enhanced in organic electrolyte solutions. For example, by adding sodium tartrate into dimethyl sulphoxide, the dispersion concentration of MoS2 nanosheets is 85 times that in neat dimethyl sulphoxide. About 80% of MoS2 nanosheets obtained in such a strategy is 1-4 layers and the nanosheets remain 2H phase structure. In addition, the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance of the as-prepared few-layer MoS2 nanosheets is evaluated. The photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate is as high as 0.5 mmolg-1 h-1, which is 71 and 10 times higher than that of bulk MoS2 and the 2H-MoS2 nanosheets, respectively, reported to date. Exfoliation mechanism investigation suggests that the size of cation and the intensity of Lewis basicity of anion in the salts have played an important role in the exfoliation of MoS2. The liquid exfoliation strategy reported here has great potential in the large-scale and high quality production of few-layer MoS2 nanosheets for efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution.

Abstract:Ultrasonic Liquid Phase Exfoliation (LPE) has gathered attention from both scientific and industrial communities for its accessibility and cost-effectiveness in producing graphene. However, this technique has faced challenges such as low yield and long production time. In this study, we developed a cyclic ultrasonication system to exfoliate expanded graphite (EG) by applying static pressure to a flow chamber to address these challenges. Using deionized water (DIW) as solvent and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as dispersion, we obtained graphene slurries with an average lateral size of 7 μm and averaged number of layers of 3.5 layers, after 40 min of ultrasonication. After centrifugation, the yield of single and bilayer graphene was approximately 16 %. The findings showed that regulating hydrostatic pressure can effectively affect the lateral size and number of layers of few-layer graphene. The proposed method is of good potential for scaled-up production of few-layer graphene.

Abstract:The ultrasonic liquid phase exfoliation method has emerged as an essential research direction for graphene preparation due to its cost-effectiveness and ability to minimize defects. However, this method faces challenges related to processing throughput when scaled up for industrial production. In this study, industrial grade ultrasonic homogenizers with different frequencies and probe types were evaluated for the preparation of FLG. In each experiment, 1.5 kg of graphite slurry was treated using a cyclic ultrasonic system. The results demonstrated that the 25 kHz dumbbell probe produced the thinnest FLG with the lowest defect density. Moreover, applying a static pressure of 0.2 MPa in the cycle system enhanced the cavitation-induced exfoliation of graphite sheets, effectively reducing the layer count and distribution range of FLG. This method improves the conductivity while minimizing defect density.

Abstract:Liquid-phase exfoliation of two-dimensional materials is very attractive for large-scale applications. Although used extensively, isolating MoS2 layers (<10) with high efficiency is reported to be extremely difficult. Further, the importance of soaking has not yet been studied, and the surfactants' role in stabilizing MoS2 nanosheets is poorly understood1. Herein, we report a novel approach to exfoliating large quantities of MoS2 via high-pressure (HP) liquid-phase exfoliation (LPE) in deionized (DI) water. 4 to 7 layers of MoS2 nanosheets were obtained from 60 days-soaked samples and they were found to be stable in solvents for periods of up to six months. Studies on the effect of three surfactants, namely sodium dodecyl benzenesulfonate (SDBS), sodium cholate (SC), and tetra-butyl ammonium bromide (TBAB), indicate that exfoliation of MoS2 nanosheets in SDBS is highly efficient than the other two surfactants. The estimated yield reaches up to 7.25%, with a nanosheet concentration of 1.45 mg/ml, which is one of the highest ever reported. Our studies also suggest that the nanosheets' concentration and the lateral size depend on exfoliation cycles, applied pressure and surfactant concentration. Hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and ion-transport study show that the nanosheets prepared by our method are stable in an acidic medium and free from surfactants. A high hydrogen evolution rate of 30.13 mmol g-1 h-1 was estimated under ambient laboratory conditions.
Removal of Surface-Attached Micro- and Nanobubbles by Ultrasonic Cavitation in Microfluidics

Abstract:Surface-attached micro- and nanobubbles are known for their resistance to external forces. This study experimentally and theoretically investigates their response to strong ultrasonic fields. Surface-attached micro- and nanobubbles with contact radii from 2 mu m to 20 mu m are generated in a microchannel and exposed to ultrasound through a vibrating glass substrate. At a driving frequency over 200 kHz up to 2 MHz tested, no significant response from the micro- and nanobubbles is observed. By contrast, at 100 kHz-200 kHz, ultrasonic cavitation bubbles appear in the microchannel and migrate toward the surface micro- and nanobubbles. Then the surface micro- and nanobubbles merge with the ultrasonic cavitation bubbles, detach from the substrate, and become free gaseous nuclei susceptible to further cavitation. Notably, the removal process leaves no observable residue. Theoretical analysis suggests that the directional migration of cavitation bubbles is driven by mutual acoustic radiation forces. This work demonstrates that ultrasonic fields can effectively remove surface micro- and nanobubbles, transforming them into free gaseous cavitation nuclei.

Abstract:Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) reinforced hollow glass microspheres (HGMs)/epoxy syntactic foam was fabricated. The effects of ultrasonication on the density, compression strength, and water absorption properties were studied. Better dispersed MWCNTs can be obtained after ultrasonication treatment, but an increasing viscosity will lead to a larger amount of voids during syntactic foam preparation especially when the content of HGMs is more than 70 vol%. The existing voids will decrease the density of epoxy syntactic foam. However, the ultrasonication does not change the compression strength much. Ultrasonication treatment will decrease the water absorption content due to the better dispersion and hydrophobic properties of MWCNTs. But a significant increase of water absorption content occurs when HGMs is more than 70 vol%, which is attributed to the higher viscosity and larger amount of voids.

Abstract:A wide variety of two-dimensional layered materials are synthesized by liquid-phase exfoliation. Here we examine exfoliation of MoS2 into nanosheets in a mixture of water and isopropanol (IPA) containing cavitation bubbles. Using force fields optimized with experimental data on interfacial energies between MoS2 and the solvent, multimillion-atom molecular dynamics simulations are performed in conjunction with experiments to examine shock-induced collapse of cavitation bubbles and the resulting exfoliation of MoS2. The collapse of cavitation bubbles generates high-speed nanojets and shock waves in the solvent. Large shear stresses due to the nanojet impact on MoS2 surfaces initiate exfoliation, and shock waves reflected from MoS2 surfaces enhance exfoliation. Structural correlations in the solvent indicate that shock induces an ice VII like motif in the first solvation shell of water.

Controlled Inertial Cavitation as a Route to High Yield Liquid Phase Exfoliation of Graphene

Abstract:Ultrasonication is widely used to exfoliate two dimensional (2D) van der Waals layered materials such as graphene. Its fundamental mechanism, inertial cavitation, is poorly understood and often ignored in ultrasonication strategies resulting in low exfoliation rates, low material yields and wide flake size distributions, making the graphene dispersions produced by ultrasonication less economically viable. Here we report that few-layer graphene yields of up to 18% in three hours without introduction of basal plane defects can be achieved by optimising inertial cavitation during ultrasonication. We demonstrate that the yield and the graphene flake dimensions exhibit a power law relationship with inertial cavitation dose. Furthermore, inertial cavitation is shown to preferentially exfoliate larger graphene flakes which causes the exfoliation rate to decrease as a function of sonication time. This study demonstrates that measurement and control of inertial cavitation is critical in optimising the high yield sonication-assisted aqueous liquid phase exfoliation of size-selected nanomaterials. Future development of this method should lead to the development of high volume flow cell production of 2D van der Waals layered nanomaterials.

Abstract:Ultrasonic liquid phase exfoliation is a promising method for the production of two-dimensional (2D) layered materials. A large number of studies have been made in investigating the underlying ultrasound exfoliation mechanisms. However, due to the experimental challenges for capturing the highly transient and dynamic phenomena in real-time at sub-microsecond time and micrometer length scales simultaneously, most theories reported to date still remain elusive. Here, using the ultra-short X-ray Free Electron Laser pulses (~25ps) with a unique pulse train structure, we applied MHz X-ray Microscopy and machine-learning technique to reveal unambiguously the full cycles of the ultrasound cavitation and graphite layer exfoliation dynamics with sub-microsecond and micrometer resolution. Cyclic fatigue shock wave impacts produced by ultrasound cloud implosion were identified as the dominant mechanism to deflect and exfoliate graphite layers mechanically. For the graphite flakes, exfoliation rate as high as ~5 angstroms per shock wave impact was observed. For the HOPG graphite, the highest exfoliation rate was ~0.15 angstroms per impact. These new findings are scientifically and technologically important for developing industrial upscaling strategies for ultrasonic exfoliation of 2D materials.

Abstract:Zero-dimensional MoS2 quantum dots (QDs) possess distinct physical and chemical properties, which have garnered them considerable attention and facilitates their use in a broad range of applications. In this study, we prepared monolayer MoS2 QDs using temporally shaped femtosecond laser ablation of bulk MoS2 targets in water. The morphology, crystal structures, chemical, and optical properties of the MoS2 QDs were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, UV-vis absorption spectra, and photoluminescence spectra. The analysis results show that highly pure, uniform, and monolayer MoS2 QDs can be successfully prepared. Moreover, by temporally shaping a conventional single pulse into a two-subpulse train, the production rate of MoS2 nanomaterials (including nanosheets, nanoparticles, and QDs) and the ratio of small size MoS2 QDs can be substantially improved. The underlying mechanism is a combination of multilevel photoexfoliation of monolayer MoS2 and water photoionization-enhanced light absorption. The as-prepared MoS2 QDs exhibit excellent electrocatalytic activity for hydrogen evolution reactions because of the abundant active edge sites, high specific surface area, and excellent electrical conductivity. Thus, this study provides a simple and green alternative strategy for the preparation of monolayer QDs of transition metal dichalcogenides or other layered materials.

Abstract:2 H-MoS(2 n)anoparticles with excellent structural characteristics has become one of the main research objects of lubricating additives. Herein, one crumpled MoS2 submicrosphere staggered by ultrafine nanosheet was successfully synthesized by clean and fast laser irradiation in liquids at ambient conditions. Such crumpled sphere exhibits good wettability on steel surface in water. As water additives, the crumpled MoS2 submicrosphere can significantly improve the lubrication performance. Notably, the crumpled MoS2 submicrosphere have remarkable anti-friction with 80% reduction of COF compared with the pure water. The enhanced lubrication performance benefits from the lamella structure, microbearing and protective tribofilm of crumpled submicrosphere.

Abstract:Liquid-phase exfoliation (LPE) has been shown to be capable of producing large quantities of high-quality dispersions suitable for processing into subsequent applications. LPE typically requires surfactants for aqueous dispersions or organic solvents with high boiling point. However, they have major drawbacks such as toxicity, aggregation during solvent evaporation or the presence of residues. Here, dispersions of molybdenum disulfide in acetone are prepared and show much higher concentration and stability than predicted by Hansen parameter analysis. Aiming to understand these enhanced properties, the nanosheets were characterised using UV-visible spectroscopy, zeta potential measurements, atomic force microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning transmission microscopy combined with spatially-resolved electron energy loss spectroscopy. Also, the performance of the MoS2 nanosheets exfoliated in acetone was compared to that of those exfoliated in isopropanol as a catalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction. The conclusion from the chemical characterisation was that MoS2 nanosheets exfoliated in acetone have an oxygen edge functionalisation, in the form of molybdenum oxides, changing its interaction with solvents and explaining the observed high-quality and stability of the resulting dispersion in a low boiling point solvent. Exfoliation in acetone could potentially be applied as a pretreatment to modify the solubility of MoS2 by edge functionalisation.

Abstract:In this study, in situ detection of the transient cavitation intensity during the sonochemical synthesis of Zinc-based Oxide (ZBO) is realized. At a fixed ethanol/water ratio of 25%, the transient cavitation intensity initially increases to a certain level during the nucleation stage of ZBO since the growth units of ZBO serve as supplementary induction sites for transient cavitation bubbles. Once the process surpasses the critical supersaturation point of ZBO growth units, a decrease of transient cavitation intensity is observed because the formation of massive ZBO nanocrystals may cause ultrasonic scattering attention. As a result, high-aspect-ratio ZBO nanorods are formed due to the preferential growth along the [0 0 1] direction. In addition, by increasing the ethanol/water ratio, a similar but decreasing trend in the time-dependent transient cavitation intensity during the ZBO synthesis process is obtained. This results in fewer ethanol molecules detaching from the ZBO (0 0 1) crystal surface, due to reduced cavitation bubble explosions, thereby inhibiting ZBO growth along the [0 0 1] direction. At an ethanol/water ratio of 75%, a morphological transition from slender nanorods to ultra-thin Zn 5 (NO 3 ) 2 (OH) 8 ·2H 2 O nanoflakes is facilitated. These ultra-thin nanoflakes demonstrate promising photocatalytic performance. This work provides a rational sonochemical approach for synthesizing facet-controlled growth of nanocrystals.

Abstract:Hydrophobic biodegradable ethyl cellulose (EC) nanoparticles are commonly used to stabilize the gas/liquid interfaces. To produce EC foams, ultrasonication with a driving frequency of 21.45kHz is utilized. EC suspension reduced the cavitation noise, and the immersing depth of the vibrating horn influenced the foamability of the EC particles. When the horn is near the air/liquid interface, dense and homogeneous EC foams will be obtained, but when the horn is near the bottom wall, sparse and polydisperse EC foams are obtained. This is attributed to the fact that more bubbles are stabilized by the EC nanoparticles in the ultrasonic field when the horn is near the air/liquid interface; therefore, the collapse of the bubbles is suppressed, and the sound pressure level is lowered on the broadband.
