Abstract:The reflectance of crystalline silicon wafer with a random pyramid textured surface has been studied. The texturization was carried out in an alkaline aqueous solution. The reflection mostly happens on the mirror-like Si {111} surfaces and dominated by a special approach which theoretically predicts a better antireflective performance than the comparable V-grooves and periodic upright pyramids. The enhanced reflectance for the practical random pyramids is analyzed. The different loss contributions due to a nonideal pyramid structure are also discussed.

Abstract:The antireflection of porous-pyramids structured silicon surface has been studied. The porous surface is formed by stain etching in HF/Fe(NO3)3 aqueous solution after textured in KOH/IPA solution. Reflectivity measurements show an overall reflectance of 4.2% for porous-pyramids textured silicon surface in the range from 400 to 900nm. An optimal etching time of 30min is obtained when both reflectivity and photo-generated carriers lifetime are considered. This technique may be probably used in the texturization process for high-efficiency silicon solar cells.

Abstract:The scattering of light by dielectric particles much larger than the wavelength of incident light is attributed to diffraction, external reflection and outgoing refracted waves. This paper focuses on diffraction and external reflection by faceted particles, which can be calculated semi-analytically based on physical optics. Three approximate methods; the surface-integral method (SIM), the volume-integral method (VIM), and the diffraction plus reflection pattern from ray optics (DPR) are compared. Four elements of the amplitude scattering matrix in the SIM and the VIM are presented in an explicit form. Of interest is that diffraction and external reflection are separable in the SIM, whereas they are combined in the VIM. A feature of zero forward reflection is noticed in the SIM. The applicability of the DPR method is restricted to particles with random orientations. In the manner of van de Hulst, we develop a new technique to compute the reflection pattern of randomly oriented convex particles using spheres with the same refractive index, resulting in an improvement in the precision of the reflection calculation in near-forward and near-backward directions. The accuracy of the aforementioned three methods is investigated by comparing their results with those from the discrete-dipole-approximation (DDA) method for hexagonal particles at the refractive index of 1.3+i1.0. For particles with fixed orientations, it is found that the SIM and the VIM are comparable in accuracy and applicable when the size parameter is on the order of 20. The ray-spreading effect on the phase function is evident from the results of various size parameters. For randomly oriented particles, the DPR is more efficient than the SIM and the VIM.
Light Scattering by Hexagonal Ice Crystals with Distributed Inclusions

Abstract:Inclusions of air bubbles or soot particles have significant effects on the single-scattering properties of ice crystals, effects that in turn have significant impacts on the radiation budget of an atmosphere containing the crystals. This study investigates some of the single-scattering effects in the case of hexagonal ice crystals, including effects on the backscattering depolarization ratio, a quantity of practical importance in the interpretation of lidar observations. One distinguishing feature of the study is an investigation of scattering properties at a visible wavelength for a crystal with size parameter (x) above 100, a size regime where one expects some agreement between exact methods and geometrical optics methods. This expectation is generally borne out in a test comparison of how the sensitivity of scattering properties to the distribution of a given volume fraction of included air is represented using (i) an approximate Monte Carlo Ray Tracing (MCRT) method and (ii) a numerically exact pseudo-spectral time-domain (PSTD) method. Another distinguishing feature of the study is a close examination, using the numerically exact Invariant-Imbedding T-Matrix (II-TM) method, of how some optical properties of importance to satellite remote sensing vary as the volume fraction of inclusions and size of crystal are varied. Although such an investigation of properties in the x>100 regime faces serious computational burdens that force a large number of idealizations and simplifications in the study, the results nevertheless provide an intriguing glimpse of what is evidently a quite complex sensitivity of optical scattering properties to inclusions of air or soot as volume fraction and size parameter are varied.

Abstract:The principle of microscopic scattering dark-field imaging is adopted in surface defects evaluation system (SDES) for large fine optics. However, since defects are of micron or submicron scale, scattering imaging cannot be described simply by geometrical imaging. In this paper, the simulation model of the electromagnetic field in defect scattering imaging is established on the basis of Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) method to study the scattering imaging properties of rectangular and triangular defects with different sizes by simulation. The criterion board with scribed lines and dots on it is used to carry out experiments scattering imaging and obtain grayscale value distributions of scattering dark-field images of scribed lines. The experiment results are in good agreement with the simulation results. Based on the above analysis, defect width extraction width is preliminary discussed. Findings in this paper could provide theoretical references for defect calibration in optical fabrication and inspection.

Abstract:Pyramid is a typical kind of cone structure.When the light passes through the "pyramid" array,it is equivalent to pass through a thin film with a graded refractive index,and the Fresnel reflection at the interface is greatly weakened.The surface reflection characteristics of the sub-wavelength structure composed of three materials (Si,SiO2,Ge) were simulated with DiffractMOD in Rsoft.The results show that the sub-wavelength structure composed of SiO2 has good optical anti-reflection characteristics.

Abstract:In this paper, a time-domain finite-difference (FDTD) method is used to simulate the scattering properties of a Janus dimer that a gold nanosphere is putted on the top of a silicon nanorod. We have demonstrated that the Janus dimer exhibits unidirectional scattering in the whole wavelength region of the sunlight. The unidirectionality of the dimer will improve with the height increase of the silicon nanorod and the gap decrease between two adjacent dimers. In our simulation, the forward-to-backward ratio (F/B) of the Janus dimer calculated dividing forward scattering spectra by backward scattering spectra can achieve the maximum of 20 when the height of silicon nanorod is 300 nm. What is more, we have applied the Janus dimers to amorphous silicon thin-film solar cells as antireflection structures. The reflectivity of the solar cells reduces by 39.40% and the short circuit current density improves by 5.04% than those of the reference. Therefore, the Janus dimers has a great application prospect in photovoltaic devices.

Abstract:Searching for the relationship between the nanostructure and optical properties has always been exciting the researchers in the field of optics (linear optics as well as non-linear optics), energy harvesting (anti-reflective Si solar cells, perovskite solar cells, ..., etc.), and industry (anti-reflection coating on car windows, sunglasses, etc.). In this work, we present an approach for nanostructuring the silicon substrate to silicon photonic crystals. By precisely controlling the etching time and etching path after using nanoimprint lithography, ordered arrays of inverted Si nanopyramids and Si nanopillars with good homogeneity, uniform surface roughness, high reproducibility of pattern transfer, and a controllable aspect ratio are prepared. Experimental investigation of the optical properties indicates that the reflections of these Si nanostructures are mainly determined by the aspect ratio as well as the period of nanostructures. Furthermore, we have experimentally observed visible-light scattering (V-LS) patterns on inverted Si nanopyramids and Si nanopillars, and their corresponding patterns can be precisely controlled by the patterned nanostructures. The V-LS pattern, background, and "ghost peaks" on the angle-resolved scattering results are caused by constructive interference, destructive interference, and the interference situation between both. This controllable nanopatterning on crystalline Si substrates with precisely tunable optical properties shows great potential for applications in many fields, for example, optics, electronics, and energy.

Abstract:Dielectric nanostructures exhibit intriguing optical properties and outstanding advantages in designing optical nanoantennas and metasurfaces compared to plasmonic nanostructures. This study employs classical electrodynamic methods to comprehensively explore the scattering characteristics of silicon triangular nanoprisms in monomer and oligomer forms. For monomeric nanoprisms, the scattering spectra reveal two distinct and prominent resonance peaks attributed to magnetic dipole (MD) and electric dipole (ED) modes. Reducing interparticle gaps within dimeric structures leads to noticeable blueshifts in MD resonance peaks with stable intensities, in contrast to the nearly constant position and significantly reduced intensities of the ED resonance peaks. A pronounced Fano-like resonance was observed upon transitioning to tetrameric and hexameric configurations, resulting from the coupling between MD and ED modes. A broad resonance peak also emerges in the long-wavelength region due to MD-to-MD coupling. The simulations conducted herein hold significant theoretical implications, advancing our comprehension of the scattering properties of dielectric nanoparticles and contributing valuable insights into fundamental nanophotonics.

Abstract:A tailored large-size plasmonic core-protuberances silver particle with unique optical properties with promising applications in thin-film solar cells was numerically and experimentally studied. The designed particle possesses an extremely enhanced electromagnetic near-field excited by localized surface plasmons resonance and its far field angular plots of light scattering power indicated an enhanced back-scattering ability. When embedded the lumpy particles into the rear of thin-film amorphous silicon solar cells, light trapping in broad wavelength range and ideal short circuit density of the cells increased. A simple one-step reaction was established to acquire the structured particles. The strengthening backward scattering capacity in a broadband light region was also verified experimentally.

Abstract:We introduce an effective refractive-index model to predict the spectral positions of localized surface plasmon (LSP) modes of a silver nanoparticle on a thin-film silicon substrate using a semi-analytical method. The enhanced scattering into the substrate caused by the nanoparticle dipole and quadrupole modes is verified by comparing theoretical and simulation results. We suggest that the LSP modes can be tuned linearly with the thickness of the silicon substrate and the size of the nanoparticles. These findings provide simple and important physical insights for optimizing the absorption in a thin-film silicon solar cell by tuning the LSP modes of the nanoparticles deployed on the surface.

Abstract:A novel method is developed to study the relation between scatterometer scattering and surface scattering, which shows that they can be expressed by an equivalent image formation process with the convolution law. Based on the physical concepts, a scatterometer is constructed and a polished silicon wafer is measured. The power spectrum density function and the autocorrelation function of the surface roughness are calculated from the measured data by the application of the theoretical analysis.

Abstract:Texturization is a useful method to enhance the optical absorption of monocrystalline silicon wafers by light-trapping effect in solar cell processing. In present study, a series of textured wafers with various pyramid sizes ranging from 200 nm to 10 μ m were fabricated by modified wet-chemical method and characterized. The results show that there is little difference in the reflectance with the pyramid sizes from 1 to 10 μ m, which is consistent with the ray-tracing simulation results. However, the light-trapping function of the 200 nm sample below the geometrical optics limit is much weaker. The solar cells fabricated from the 1 μ m samples own the highest power conversion efficiency of 18.17% due to a better coverage of metal finger lines than the larger ones, and the 200 nm samples have the lowest efficiency of 10.53%.

Abstract:This paper investigates the formation process of surface pyramid and etching characteristics duringthe texturing process of mono-crystalline silicon wafers. It is found that there is an etch ratetransition point in alkaline anisotropic etching when {100} plane-dominated etch turns to {111}plane-dominated etch, and the pyramid size has a strong linear correlation with the etch amount atthe transition point. Several techniques were developed to control the pyramid size by monitoringand adjusting the etching amount. A wide range of average pyramid sizes were successfully achieved,from 0.5 to 12 μ m. The experiments of the pyramid size on the light reflectance, the minoritycarrier lifetime (MCLT), and the performance of silicon heterojunction (SHJ) solar cells werecarried out and analyzed. Focusing and Diffraction of Light by Periodic Si Micropyramidal Arrays

Abstract:This research was devoted to modeling of the optical properties of Si micropyramids aimed at designing optimal structures for applications as light concentrators in mid-wave infrared (MWIR) focal place arrays (FPAs). It is shown that completely different optical properties of such structures can be realized using two types of boundary conditions (BCs): i) periodical and ii) perfectly matched layer. The first type (periodical BC) allowed us to describe the Talbot effect under plane wave coherent illumination conditions. This effect was experimentally demonstrated in the proposed structures. The second type (perfectly matched layer BC) allows describing the optical properties of individual micropyramids concentrating or focusing light on the photodetector. The optimal geometries of micropyramids required for maximizing the intensity of photonic nanojets emerging from their truncated tips are determined.

Abstract:Quasiparticle interference (QPI) of the electronic states has been widely applied in scanning tunneling microscopy to analyze the electronic band structure of materials. Single-defect-induced QPI reveals defect-dependent interaction between a single atomic defect and electronic states, which deserves special attention. Due to the weak signal of single-defect-induced QPI, the signal-to-noise ratio is relatively low in a standard two-dimensional QPI measurement. In this paper, we introduce a projective quasiparticle interference (PQPI) method in which a one-dimensional measurement is taken along high-symmetry directions centered on a specified defect. We apply the PQPI method to the topological nodal-line semimetal ZrSiS. We focus on two special types of atomic defects that scatter the surface and bulk electronic bands. With an enhanced signal-to-noise ratio in PQPI, the energy dispersions are clearly resolved along high-symmetry directions. We discuss the defect-dependent scattering of bulk bands with the nonsymmorphic symmetry-enforced selection rules. Furthermore, an energy shift of the surface floating band is observed, and a branch of energy dispersion (q_{6}) is resolved. This PQPI method can be applied to other complex materials to explore defect-dependent interactions in the future.

Abstract:Surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) has drawn much research interest in the past decades as an efficient technique to detect low-concentration molecules. Among many technologies, which can be used to fabricate SERS substrates, laser ablation is a simple and high-speed method to produce large-area SERS substrates. This work investigates the angular texturing effect by dynamic laser ablation and its influence on SERS signals. By tuning the angle between the Si surface and laser irradiation, the distributions and sizes of laser induced hybrid micro/nano-structures are studied. By decorating with a silver film, plenty of hot spots can be created among these structures for SERS. It is found that when the incident laser angle is 15 degrees at the laser fluence of 16.0 J/cm(2), the SERS performance is well optimized. This work realizes antisymmetric distribution of nanoparticles deposited on Si surface, which provides a flexible tuning of the hybrid micro/nano-structures' fabrication with high controllability for practical applications. Examination of surface roughness on light scattering by long ice columns by use of a two-dimensional finite-difference time-domain algorithm

Abstract:Natural particles such as ice crystals in cirrus clouds generally are not pristine but have additional microroughness on their surfaces. A two-dimensional finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) program with a perfectly matched layer absorbing boundary condition is developed to calculate the effect of surface roughness on light scattering by long ice columns. When we use a spatial cell size of 1/120 incident wavelength for ice circular cylinders with size parameters of 6 and 24 at wavelengths of 0.55 and 10.8 microm, respectively, the errors in the FDTD results in the extinction, scattering, and absorption efficiencies are smaller than approximately 0.5%. The errors in the FDTD results in the asymmetry factor are smaller than approximately 0.05%. The errors in the FDTD results in the phase-matrix elements are smaller than approximately 5%. By adding a pseudorandom change as great as 10% of the radius of a cylinder, we calculate the scattering properties of randomly oriented rough-surfaced ice columns. We conclude that, although the effect of small surface roughness on light scattering is negligible, the scattering phase-matrix elements change significantly for particles with large surface roughness. The roughness on the particle surface can make the conventional phase function smooth. The most significant effect of the surface roughness is the decay of polarization of the scattered light.

Abstract:Accurate modeling of light scattering from nanometer scale defects on Silicon wafers is critical for enabling increasingly shrinking semiconductor technology nodes of the future. Yet, such modeling of defect scattering remains unsolved since existing modeling techniques fail to account for complex defect and wafer geometries. Here, we present results of laser beam scattering from spherical and ellipsoidal particles located on the surface of a silicon wafer. A commercially available electromagnetic field solver (HFSS) was deployed on a multiprocessor cluster to obtain results with previously unknown accuracy down to light scattering intensity of -170 dB. We compute three dimensional scattering patterns of silicon nanospheres located on a semiconductor wafer for both perpendicular and parallel polarization and show the effect of sphere size on scattering. We further computer scattering patterns of nanometer scale ellipsoidal particles having different orientation angles and unveil the effects of ellipsoidal orientation on scattering.

Progress in Photovoltaics: Research and Applications

Abstract:Silicon heterojunction solar cells with pyramidal textured surfaces created by different etching conditions and their properties related to device efficiency (short‐circuit current density and open‐circuit voltage) are studied. An easy‐to‐apply model is proposed to estimate reflection losses, optimize the multilayer structure of the solar cell, and enhance photovoltaic conversion efficiency. The effects of etching treatments and pyramid geometry on overall device performance are discussed in detail. The study is completed by measurement of pyramid vertex angles of different textures. A difference from the expected and generally accepted theoretical value of 70.52° is demonstrated and explained based on observation from high‐resolution transmission electron microscopy. The multilayer structure of silicon heterojunction solar cells is optimized with respect to various pyramid vertex angles, using the designed optical model to minimize absorption and reflection losses. We present a detailed optical and structural characterization of thin films deposited on pyramids for heterojunction solar cells. Our experimental results reveal unexpected values of the vertex angles, which have been observed and explained using atomic scale images. Precise knowledge of vertex angle is crucial for accurate deposition of thin films. A strong dependence of the silicon heterojunction solar cell performance on the film thicknesses has been demonstrated.
