Abstract:A multi-pulse sampling dual-comb ranging (MS-DCR) method is proposed in this paper. Four sampling pulses and two signal pulses separated in the time domain are generated in a repetition period by fiber delay. Through multi-pulse linear optical sampling, eight cross-correlation interferograms (IGMs) are generated in an updating period. The proposed method realizes the multiplication of IGMs so that additional ranging results can be obtained. The experimental results demonstrate that we suppress any random noise by averaging the ranging results and improve the precision of the time-of-flight (TOF) method and carrier-wave interferometric (CWI) method simultaneously. The precision of TOF is improved from 3.85 µm to 1.39 µm without time averaging and that of CWI is improved from 25 nm to 11 nm. The TOF result can link to the interferometric phase with 15 ms averaging, and a precision of 0.48 nm is reached with 0.5 s averaging. The proposed technique overcomes the limitations of linear optical sampling in conventional dual-comb interferometers and achieves faster and higher precision distance measurements without decreasing the unambiguity range.

Abstract:The interferometric signals produced in conventional dual-comb laser ranging require femtosecond lasers with long-term f_CEO stability, and are limited to an upper sampling rate by radio-frequency aliasing considerations. By using cross-polarized dual combs and two-photon detection we demonstrate carrier-phase-insensitive cross-correlations at sampling rates of up to 12x the conventional dual-comb aliasing limit, recording these in a digitizer-based acquisition system to implement ranging with sub-100-nm precision. We then extend this concept to show how the high data burden of conventional dual-comb acquisition can be eliminated by using a simple microcontroller as a ns-precision stopwatch to record the time intervals separating the two-photon cross-correlation pulses, providing real-time and continuous LiDAR-like distance metrology capable of sub-100 nm precision and dynamic acquisition for unlimited periods.

Abstract:We present an absolute distance measurement system using a phase-stable dual-comb system with 56.09 MHz repetition rate and 2 kHz repetition rate difference. A relative phase stability of 0.1 rad in 0.5 ms between two combs is achieved using a mutual locking scheme. The dual-comb ranging system combines the time-of-flight (TOF) method, synthetic-wavelength interferometry (SWI), and carrier wave interferometry (CWI). Each method provides a particular ambiguity range and resolution, and they can be applied simultaneously and linked to enhance the precision and measurement rate of the ranging system. The experimental results demonstrate that a precision of 1.2 μm is obtained without time averaging, and the precision can be improved to 3 nm with only 10 ms averaging time using the SWI method described in this study. The precision reaches a sub-nanometer when the averaging time exceeds 0.1 s. A system with high accuracy and short averaging time would enhance fast measurement performance in various industrial applications. The ambiguity range is about 2.67 m in our system, we test the performance of the system with 1.5 mm range at 1.5 m distance.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate single-pixel photon counting imaging based on dual-comb interferometry at 1550 nm. Different from traditional dual-comb imaging, this approach enables imaging at the photon-counting regime by using single-photon detectors combined with a time-correlated single-photon counter to record the returning photons. The illumination power is as low as 14 pW, corresponding to 2.2 × 10−3 photons/pulse. The lateral resolution is about 50 μm. This technique paves the way for applying dual-comb in remote sensing and imaging.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a versatile technique for performing dual-comb interferometry using a single frequency comb. By rapid switching of the repetition rate, the output pulse train can be delayed and heterodyned with itself to produce interferograms. The full speed and resolution of standard dual-comb interferometry is preserved while simultaneously offering a significant experimental simplification and cost savings. We show that this approach is particularly suited for absolute distance metrology due to an extension of the non-ambiguity range as a result of the continuous repetition-rate switching.

Abstract:A simplified phase-stable dual-comb interferometer for absolute distance measurement within a short dynamic range is proposed in this paper. The experimental results demonstrate that stable phase-difference information and lower timing jitter can be obtained within a time delay of 2000 ns between the reference interference signal and measurement interference signal. Using the proposed technique, the time-of-flight (TOF) result can link directly to the carrier-wave interferometric (CWI) result in an average time of 20 ms and can reach 2 nm precision in 0.5 s averaging time. Millimeter-scale measurement dynamic range and nanometer-level precision can thus be achieved without additional noise suppression. This method can also be applied at different stand-off distances.

Abstract:Dual-comb spectroscopy has been proven beneficial in molecular characterization but remains challenging in the mid-infrared region due to difficulties in sources and efficient photodetection. Here we introduce cross-comb spectroscopy, in which a mid-infrared comb is upconverted via sum-frequency generation with a near-infrared comb of a shifted repetition rate and then interfered with a spectral extension of the near-infrared comb. We measure CO 2 absorption around 4.25 μm with a 1-μm photodetector, exhibiting a 233-cm −1 instantaneous bandwidth, 28000 comb lines, a single-shot signal-to-noise ratio of 167 and a figure of merit of 2.4 × 10 6 Hz 1/2 . We show that cross-comb spectroscopy can have superior signal-to-noise ratio, sensitivity, dynamic range, and detection efficiency compared to other dual-comb-based methods and mitigate the limits of the excitation background and detector saturation. This approach offers an adaptable and powerful spectroscopic method outside the well-developed near-IR region and opens new avenues to high-performance frequency-comb-based sensing with wavelength flexibility.

Abstract:We present a compact system of synchronization for two fiber-based optical frequency comb lasers. We use a free- running continuous wave laser as an intermediary to obtain the relative noise of two combs and employ an intra-cavity electro-optic modulator (EOM) to achieve active phase feedback for fast synchronization. The EOM bandwidth is 150 kHz and the relative linewidth is suppressed markedly from 300 kHz to sub-hertz values. The relative effective timing jitter of the two pulse trains is also decreased from 680 fs to 25 fs. The proposed method shows promise for developing a high-performance, low-cost, fiber-based dual-comb interferometer for ranging or spectroscopy.

Abstract:Dual-comb spectroscopy is becoming a highlighted topic in broadband spectrum measurement techniques because of two outstanding advantages. One is its highly stable output frequency, which leads to an appealing resolution, and the other is the omitting of moving parts, which helps achieve extreme fast sampling rate. Utilizing the traditional radio frequency linked combs, however, obstructs the dual-comb spectroscopy reaching satisfied performance because the phase noise of the radio frequency standard causes the dual-comb mutual coherence to severely degrade. Specifically, traditional frequency comb stabilizes the carrier envelope offset at a radio frequency by a self-reference system, and the order number of each output comb tooth is over a hundred thousand. Thus, the phase noise of the radio frequency reference is significantly multiplied in output optical frequency by the same order of magnitude as the tooth order number. In this paper, we demonstrate an optical frequency linked dual-comb spectrometer where the two combs are locked to a common narrow linewidth laser. In this configuration, the two combs are synchronized at an identical optical frequency, which means that the carrier envelope offset of the two combs are changed to an optical frequency and the order number of the output comb teeth are reduced by two orders of magnitude. Therefore, not only the complex and costly self-reference system can be removed but also the phase noise of the optical frequency of each comb tooth is effectively reduced, which leads to lower mutual frequency jitters and better mutual coherence. To prove the performance, we measure the v(1) + v(3) P branch of (C2H2)-C-13 molecular and the results accord well with the reported line positions and reveals a spectral resolution of 0.086 cm(-1). The average signal-to-noise ratio exceeds 200 : 1 (62.5 ms, 100 times on average) and the noise equivalent coefficient is 6.0 x 10 (6) cm (1).Hz (1/2) . This work provides a solution for pragmatic dual-comb spectroscopy with high resolution and low-cost configuration.

Abstract:The multiple pulse train interference (MPTI) ranging system takes advantage of the high accuracy and absolute length measurement capability, but traditional scheme has a large measurement dead zone. In this Letter, we propose a MPTI ranging scheme based on chip-based soliton microcomb to achieve high-precision but no dead-zone measurement. The measurement optical path is improved to solve the problem of cross correlation interference fringe overlap, and a peak fitting algorithm is employed to further improve the measurement accuracy of the system. Using a commercial He–Ne interferometer, a 384 nm precision is obtained in 1.5 m distance measurements. Advantages of the simple optical path, high precision, and no measurement dead zone are expected to realize on-chip integration and provide a solution for precision measurement.

Abstract:In this Letter, we demonstrate a passive all-fiber pulse delay method for repetition rate multiplication of dual-comb spectroscopy. By combining a cascaded Mach-Zehnder interferometer and digital error correction, a mode-resolved spectrum with improved acquisition speed and sensitivity can be obtained. This technique has the strengths of compact, broadband, high energetic efficiency, and low complexity. Due to the use of an adaptive post-processing algorithm, sophisticated closed-loop feedback electronics are not required, which provides a simple and effective scheme to break through the physical limitation of the repetition frequency of the frequency comb for phase-stable dual-comb applications. Abstract:We perform a long distance measurement up to 1.2 km on the outdoor baseline by electro-optic dual-comb interferometry. A frequency comb pair is developed by phase modulating a continuous laser with a narrow linewidth, and the slightly different repetition frequencies are synchronized to the Rb clock via the signal generators. A RF electrical comb can be generated by multi-wavelength heterodyne interferometry, and thus, a series of synthetic wavelengths can be obtained, whose phases can be used to determine the distances. Compared with the reference values, the experimental results show an agreement within 379 μm in the 1180 m range. In the long-time experiments, the Allan deviation can be below 20 μm with an averaging time of 10 s, and can be further improved to be less than 600 nm when the averaging time is above 350 s at 435 m and 1180 m, respectively.

Abstract:A dual-comb nonlinear asynchronous optical sampling method is proposed to simplify determination of the time interval and extend the non-ambiguity range in absolute length measurements. Type II second harmonic generation facilitates curve fitting in determining the time interval between adjacent pulses. Meanwhile, the non-ambiguity range is extended by adjusting the repetition rate of the signal laser. The performance of the proposed method is compared with a heterodyne interferometer. Results show that the system achieves a maximum residual of 100.6 nm and an uncertainty of 1.48 μm in a 0.5 ms acquisition time. With longer acquisition time, the uncertainty can be reduced to 166.6 nm for 50 ms and 82.9 nm for 500 ms. Moreover, the extension of the non-ambiguity range is demonstrated by measuring an absolute distance beyond the inherent range determined by the fixed repetition rate.
