Abstract:Time-of-flight single-photon counting laser ranging offers an important tool for remote sensing and imaging. However, limited by the temporal properties of a single-photon detection and counting system, it encounters a challenge for high-resolution and high-precision distance metrology. Here, we incorporated dual-comb based laser ranging, an enabling technique for rapid distance measurements with high precision and large range ambiguity, with time-correlated single-photon counting (TCSPC) technology and demonstrated its feasibility for precise laser ranging under a photon-starved condition. Based on interferometric measurements of two asynchronous 2.8-pW, 25-GHz electro-optic laser combs with TCSPC, micrometer-level ranging precision was achieved for consistent distance measurements (a stand-off distance of 15.6 m) over several days. New opportunities might open up for high-resolution and high-precision single-photon counting laser ranging.

Abstract:A ranging method based on orthogonal phase-locked microwave photonic signal is proposed in this paper.A RF signal is first obtained from a modulated optical signal that is reflected by the target,and then mixed with the reference RF signal of the same frequency to extract their phase difference, which contains the ranging information.To improve the ranging accuracy, the frequency of the RF signal is swept to seek out the phase quadrature point between the microwave photonic signal and the reference signal, where the DC output of the mixer is minimum. In this way,the distance measurement can be achieved by calculating the frequency difference between two adjacent phase quadrature points.The ranging method is verified by measuring two lengths of fiber repeatedly and achieved a high precision with a relative error less than 3e-4.

Abstract:High-precision and long-range absolute distance measurement is a vitally important topic in large-scale metrology, and it has broadened applications in the manufacturing industry. Especially, the dual-comb time-of-flight distance measurement is a promising method combining with the advantages of fast speed and high accuracy. The measurand would be determined by asynchronous optical sampling (ASOPS) methods with a slight difference in repetition rates. Here, the home-built optical platform of the Er-fiber femtosecond frequency combs would be introduced with a repetition rate of around 200 MHz and carrier-envelope offset frequency of 20 MHz. Besides, the strategies of precision enhancement for dual-comb time-of-flight distance measurement with nonlinear intensity detection are discussed by the numerical simulation. The sampling interval could be optimized by choosing a proper range of repetition rate and difference of repetition rates. A fine curve fitting method is also proposed for further precision improvement. The results of numerical simulation would provide a valuable reference for the experimental process.

Abstract:Optical ranging is a key technology in metrology. Optical frequency combs are shown to provide several advantages in light ranging, offering high precision with high acquisition rate. However, performance of traditional ranging systems based on microcombs is limited by the short ambiguity distance and non-real-time processing. Here, we show that dual-comb ranging system using coherent Kerr soliton microcombs and optical switch realizes extended ambiguity distance and provides a route to real-time processing. The ambguity distance is extended to 3.28 m from about 1.5 mm and the uncertainty reaches about 1.05 times 10^-7, while the system is compatible with low-bandwidth detectors. Combining coherent microcomb ranging systems with special FPGA could enable comb-based real-time ranging systems for several applications such as industrial process monitoring.

Precise and Fast LIDAR via Electrical Asynchronous Sampling Based on a Single Femtosecond Laser

Abstract:LiDAR, using a laser-based ranging method for precise environmental 3D sensing, has numerous scientific and industrial applications. However, the challenge lies in simultaneously enhancing precision and update rate, hinders its application in more unexpected scenarios. To this end, an optical frequency comb with a stable repetition frequency and femtosecond pulse width was used as an advanced laser source. The LiDAR performance significantly improved in the micrometer and megahertz regimes using an asynchronous sampling ranging method of electrical pulses based on a single femtosecond laser. This overcame the limitation of traditional optical sampling approaches, achieving a 38.8 ${\mu}$m Allan deviation at an update rate of 1 MHz and 8.06 ${\mu}$m after 2 ms time-averaging. The proposed method used a single laser for fast metrology monitoring, 1 megapixel/s 3D imaging at the meter-level non-ambiguous range and contactless vital sign detection at the hundred-micrometer scale.

Abstract:Frequency-swept interferometry (FSI) is a powerful ranging method with high precision and immunity to ambient light. However, the stand-off distance of the current FSI-based ranging system for noncooperative targets is relatively short because the weak echo power cannot provide the needed signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Here, we report a ranging method that combines FSI and the laser feedback technique. Compared with conventional FSI, the interference between the weak echo signal and the local oscillator occurs in the laser cavity, which enhances the signal spontaneously and then provides an improved SNR. In the experiments, the detection limit of the echo power is less than 0.1 fW, with a 1 mW probe beam. Based on the enhancement from the laser feedback technique, the system can detect a noncooperative target that is up to hundreds of meters away in space without extra optical amplifiers. On the other hand, a large stand-off distance makes the system sensitive to environmental disturbance, which degrades the ranging precision. To address this issue, an interferometry-based compensation device, which is also sensitive to weak echoes from noncooperative targets, is proposed to monitor the optical-path-length drifts and ensure accurate beat frequency recognition. Moreover, the device can record distance changes during the integration time of ranging and track a moving target precisely with improved temporal resolution. Owing to the high sensitivity and the validity of the compensation approach, the standard deviation in 10 measurements is better than 0.07 mm when targeting an aluminum sheet at approximately 152 m. Generally, with a large range, high relative precision, and low photon consumption, the novel technical scheme for laser ranging demonstrates new capabilities that promise to enable a wide range of applications, such as large equipment assembly and noncooperative-target tracking.
Ultrafast and precise distance measurement via real-time chirped pulse interferometry

Abstract:Laser frequency combs, which are composed of a series of equally-spaced coherent frequency components, have triggered revolutionary progress for precision spectroscopy and optical metrology. Length/distance is of fundamental importance in both science and technology. In this work, we describe a ranging scheme based on chirped pulse interferometry. In contrast to the traditional spectral interferometry, the local oscillator is strongly chirped which is able to meet the measurement pulses at arbitrary distances, and therefore the dead zones can be removed. The distances can be precisely determined via two measurement steps based on time-of-flight method and synthetic wavelength interferometry, respectively. To overcome the speed limitation of the optical spectrum analyzer, the spectrograms are stretched and detected by a fast photodetector and oscilloscope, and consequently mapped into the time domain in real time. The experimental results indicate that the measurement uncertainty can be well within 2 $\upmu$m, compared with the reference distance meter. The Allan deviation can reach 0.4 $\upmu$m at averaging time of 4 ns, 25 nm at 1 $\upmu$s, and can achieve 2 nm at 100 $\upmu$s averaging time. We also measure a spinning disk with grooves of different depths to verify the measurement speed, and the results show that the grooves with about 150 m/s line speed can be clearly captured. Our method provides a unique combination of non-dead zones, ultrafast measurement speed, high precision and accuracy, large ambiguity range, and with only one single comb source. This system could offer a powerful solution for the field measurements in practical applications in future.

Abstract:A multi-pulse sampling dual-comb ranging (MS-DCR) method is proposed in this paper. Four sampling pulses and two signal pulses separated in the time domain are generated in a repetition period by fiber delay. Through multi-pulse linear optical sampling, eight cross-correlation interferograms (IGMs) are generated in an updating period. The proposed method realizes the multiplication of IGMs so that additional ranging results can be obtained. The experimental results demonstrate that we suppress any random noise by averaging the ranging results and improve the precision of the time-of-flight (TOF) method and carrier-wave interferometric (CWI) method simultaneously. The precision of TOF is improved from 3.85 µm to 1.39 µm without time averaging and that of CWI is improved from 25 nm to 11 nm. The TOF result can link to the interferometric phase with 15 ms averaging, and a precision of 0.48 nm is reached with 0.5 s averaging. The proposed technique overcomes the limitations of linear optical sampling in conventional dual-comb interferometers and achieves faster and higher precision distance measurements without decreasing the unambiguity range.

Abstract:A comb-based active laser ranging scheme is proposed for enhanced distance resolution and a common time standard for the entire system. Three frequency combs with different repetition rates are used as light sources at the two ends where the distance is measured. Pulse positions are determined through asynchronous optical sampling and type II second harmonic generation. Results show that the system achieves a maximum residual of 379.6 nm and a standard deviation of 92.9 nm with 2000 averages over 23.6 m. Moreover, as for the frequency transfer, an atom clock and an adjustable signal generator, synchronized to the atom clock, are used as time standards for the two ends to appraise the frequency deviation introduced by the proposed system. The system achieves a residual fractional deviation of 1.3 × 10−16 for 1 s, allowing precise frequency transfer between the two clocks at the two ends.

Abstract:Laser-based light detection and ranging (LIDAR) offers a powerful tool to real-timely map spatial information with exceptional accuracy and owns various applications ranging from industrial manufacturing, and remote sensing, to airborne and in-vehicle missions. Over the past two decades, the rapid advancements of optical frequency combs have ushered in a new era for LIDAR, promoting measurement precision to quantum noise limited level. For comb LIDAR systems, to further improve the comprehensive performances and reconcile inherent conflicts between speed, accuracy, and ambiguity range, innovative demodulation strategies become crucial. Here we report a dispersive Fourier transform (DFT) based LIDAR method utilizing phase-locked Vernier dual soliton laser combs. We demonstrate that after in-line pulse stretching, the delay of the flying pulses can be identified via the DFT-based spectral interferometry instead of temporal interferometry or pulse reconstruction. This enables absolute distance measurements with precision starting from 262 nm in single shot, to 2.8 nm after averaging 1.5 ms, in a non-ambiguity range over 1.7 km. Furthermore, our DFT-based LIDAR method distinctly demonstrates an ability to completely eliminate dead zones. Such an integration of frequency-resolved ultrafast analysis and dual-comb ranging technology may pave a way for the design of future LIDAR systems.

Abstract:Dual-comb ranging has emerged as an effective technology for long-distance metrology, providing absolute distance measurements with high speed, precision, and accuracy. Here, we demonstrate a dual-comb ranging method that utilizes a free-space transceiver unit, enabling dead-zone-free measurements and simultaneous ranging with interchanged comb roles to allow for long-distance measurements even when the target is moving. It includes a GPU-accelerated algorithm for real-time signal processing and a free-running single-cavity solid-state dual-comb laser with a carrier wavelength $\lambda_c \approx$ 1055 nm, a pulse repetition rate of 1 GHz and a repetition rate difference of 5.06 kHz. This combination offers a fast update rate and sufficient signal strength to reach a single-shot time-of-flight precision of around 0.1 $\mu$m (i.e. $< \lambda_c/4$) on a cooperative target placed at a distance of more than 40 m. The free-running laser is sufficiently stable to use the phase information for interferometric distance measurements, which improves the single-shot precision to $<$20 nm. To assess the ranging accuracy, we track the motion of the cooperative target when moved over 40 m and compare it to a reference interferometer. The residuals between the two measurements are below 3 $\mu$m. These results highlight the potential of this approach for accurate and dead-zone-free long-distance ranging, supporting real-time tracking with nm-level precision.

Abstract:A method using a pair of femtosecond frequency combs can realize ranging at a high precision of 1um by Fourier Processing. In simulation of this system based on Matlab/Simulink, it is found that the choosing of repeating frequencies has great impact on frequency of the sampled signals, which influences the ranging precision a lot. The sampled signals are analyzed and classified into three types, which can be judgment criteria in system setting. Filter at Nyquist frequency is advised to decrease the edge effect of FFT, and a supplement means of cutting in data processing is proposed to improve precision.

Abstract:We propose and implement a terahertz time-of-flight ranging system based on adaptive clock asynchronous optical sampling, where the timing jitter is corrected in real time to recover the depth information in the acquired interferograms after compensating for laser instabilities using electronic signal processing. Consequently, the involved measurement uncertainties caused by the timing jitter during the terahertz sampling process and the noise intensity of the terahertz electric field have been reduced by the utilization of the adaptive clock. The achieved uncertainty range is about 2.5 μm at a 5 cm distance after averaging the acquisition time of 1876 ms 5000 times, showing a significant improvement compared with the asynchronous optical sampling using a constant clock. The implemented terahertz ranging system only uses free-running mode-locked lasers without any phase-locked electronics, and this favors simple and robust operations for subsequent applications that extend beyond the laboratory conditions.

Abstract:We demonstrate a rapid and high-precision dual-comb ranging method with a significantly extended non-ambiguity range (NAR). By reasonably setting the polarization combining and splitting of two optical combs, we can obtain two sets of interferograms of signal comb and local oscillator comb interchanging simultaneously. This method allows us to extend the NAR to tens to hundreds of kilometers without changing the repetition rate of the signal comb. With this scheme, we demonstrate a dynamic distance measurement when a moving target crosses a measurement dead zone that is 3–4 times the NAR. The standard deviation of the residual distance is 1.48 μm with a 925 μs update rate. This rapid, high-precision, and NAR extension absolute distance measurement scheme will have broad potential in various ranging applications.
