Abstract:A comb-based active laser ranging scheme is proposed for enhanced distance resolution and a common time standard for the entire system. Three frequency combs with different repetition rates are used as light sources at the two ends where the distance is measured. Pulse positions are determined through asynchronous optical sampling and type II second harmonic generation. Results show that the system achieves a maximum residual of 379.6 nm and a standard deviation of 92.9 nm with 2000 averages over 23.6 m. Moreover, as for the frequency transfer, an atom clock and an adjustable signal generator, synchronized to the atom clock, are used as time standards for the two ends to appraise the frequency deviation introduced by the proposed system. The system achieves a residual fractional deviation of 1.3 × 10−16 for 1 s, allowing precise frequency transfer between the two clocks at the two ends.

Abstract:Laser-based light detection and ranging (LIDAR) offers a powerful tool to real-timely map spatial information with exceptional accuracy and owns various applications ranging from industrial manufacturing, and remote sensing, to airborne and in-vehicle missions. Over the past two decades, the rapid advancements of optical frequency combs have ushered in a new era for LIDAR, promoting measurement precision to quantum noise limited level. For comb LIDAR systems, to further improve the comprehensive performances and reconcile inherent conflicts between speed, accuracy, and ambiguity range, innovative demodulation strategies become crucial. Here we report a dispersive Fourier transform (DFT) based LIDAR method utilizing phase-locked Vernier dual soliton laser combs. We demonstrate that after in-line pulse stretching, the delay of the flying pulses can be identified via the DFT-based spectral interferometry instead of temporal interferometry or pulse reconstruction. This enables absolute distance measurements with precision starting from 262 nm in single shot, to 2.8 nm after averaging 1.5 ms, in a non-ambiguity range over 1.7 km. Furthermore, our DFT-based LIDAR method distinctly demonstrates an ability to completely eliminate dead zones. Such an integration of frequency-resolved ultrafast analysis and dual-comb ranging technology may pave a way for the design of future LIDAR systems.

Abstract:Time-of-flight single-photon counting laser ranging offers an important tool for remote sensing and imaging. However, limited by the temporal properties of a single-photon detection and counting system, it encounters a challenge for high-resolution and high-precision distance metrology. Here, we incorporated dual-comb based laser ranging, an enabling technique for rapid distance measurements with high precision and large range ambiguity, with time-correlated single-photon counting (TCSPC) technology and demonstrated its feasibility for precise laser ranging under a photon-starved condition. Based on interferometric measurements of two asynchronous 2.8-pW, 25-GHz electro-optic laser combs with TCSPC, micrometer-level ranging precision was achieved for consistent distance measurements (a stand-off distance of 15.6 m) over several days. New opportunities might open up for high-resolution and high-precision single-photon counting laser ranging.

Abstract:Frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) light detection and ranging (lidar) maps distance to frequency using coherent detection, which is not susceptible to stray light. The combination of the FMCW lidar and a Kerr frequency comb with a 50 GHz repetition rate enables massively parallel ranging. The resolution of FMCW lidar depends on the sweep bandwidth. However, the Kerr frequency comb can only achieve a narrow sweep bandwidth due to the cavity limitation. Here, we demonstrate a massively parallel ranging FMCW lidar based on an electro-optical frequency comb. Using the electro-optical frequency comb, we perform a 31-channel FMCW lidar with a 9.7 GHz sweep frequency bandwidth and achieve a high resolution of 1.54 cm. This approach allows for massively accurate ranging for fast three-dimensional imaging.

Abstract:Optical frequency combs of the femtosecond laser have been widely used in time-frequency technology and precision spectrum measurement. The absolute ranging technology derived from time-frequency characteristics of the optical frequency comb is expected to become the incomparable means of length metrology and distance measurement in the future due to its traceability to time-frequency standard and capability of large scale and high precision. This paper proposes a real-time absolute ranging method with multi-wavelength interferometry referenced to optical frequency comb, which enables multiple continuous-wave lasers to be synchronously calibrated to selected modes of the frequency comb by means of optical phase-locked loop. With synchronous phase measurement and calculation with excess fraction algorithm, absolute distance measurement by multi-wavelength interferometry is ultimately fulfilled. The proposed measurement method can not only retain high resolution and high accuracy of traditional laser interferometry, but also can be traced to a time-frequency reference, which is of metrological significance to high-precision length and distance measurement, especially to the definition of "meter" for physical reproduction. Measured results for ranging experiments have proved that the non-ambiguity range of the four-wavelength interferometer reaches 44.6 mm, and fluctuations of air refractive index cause the non-ambiguity range change with the order of nanometers. Through theoretical analysis, it is pointed out that the non-ambiguity range of the multi-wavelength interferometer in the actual measurement environment is restricted by the calculated error of air refractive index, especially the estimation accuracy and fluctuation degree of the refractive index relationship between wavelengths. And in a good laboratory conditions, the non-ambiguity range of real-time absolute ranging by frequency-comb-calibrated multi-wavelength interferometry can reach several meters or even tens of meters. At the same time, a 2-meter linear displacement comparison has been carried out, the P.V. value of the residual errors for linear fitting is 36.1 nm, and such residual errors match the magnitude of uncertainty of air refractive index calculated by empirical formula, which prove that the multi-wavelength interferometry can perform meter-level absolute ranging. The proposed research can be directly applied to precision manufacturing of large-scale semiconductors up to several meters, and is beneficial to promoting the accuracy of laser ranging for space mission.
Simulation of Real-Time Large-Scale Absolute Distance Measurement with a Pair of Femtosecond Frequency Comb Lasers

Abstract:Absolute distance measurement is essential in large-scale equipment manufacturing and scientific projects. Nowadays, sophisticated equipment manufacture demands for high-precision ranging with a high speed. Several raging methods utilizing the wide spectral range and stable frequency intervals of femtosecond frequency comb laser can achieve a high precision, but most of such systems suffer from relative low speed. Fortunately, the ranging method based on a pair of femtosecond frequency comb lasers can potentially resolve such problem. Combining time-of-flight and interferometry method, the measurement can accomplish rapid raging in a measurement period of 0.2ms, and achieve higher precision by interferometry after averaging of many periods. We performed a simulation of this method in Matlab/Simulink. The precision can achieve ~10nm in ideal simulation environment. By error analysis we estimated the data processing system, and gave the appropriate parameters of detector and A/D sampling. It comes to a conclusion that detector with relative long response time of ~7nm or about can be adopted, and fast Fourier transformation (FFT) of 16384 points contributes to higher precision. With such parameters, it is possible to realize real-time raging performed on field-programmable gate array (FPGA) with high precision.

Abstract:We demonstrate a rapid and high-precision dual-comb ranging method with a significantly extended non-ambiguity range (NAR). By reasonably setting the polarization combining and splitting of two optical combs, we can obtain two sets of interferograms of signal comb and local oscillator comb interchanging simultaneously. This method allows us to extend the NAR to tens to hundreds of kilometers without changing the repetition rate of the signal comb. With this scheme, we demonstrate a dynamic distance measurement when a moving target crosses a measurement dead zone that is 3–4 times the NAR. The standard deviation of the residual distance is 1.48 μm with a 925 μs update rate. This rapid, high-precision, and NAR extension absolute distance measurement scheme will have broad potential in various ranging applications.

Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrate a rapid high-resolution frequency comb spectrometer involving a mode-locked laser comb and a multi-colour laser. The heterodyne detection of the two lasers enables hundreds of thousands of Doppler-limited molecular spectra to be recorded in a second. With this device, several P-branch transitions of the H13CN (gas) 2ν3-band are simultaneously interrogated at comb-line-defined resolution (54.5 MHz or 0.5 pm) within 3 μs. The single-measurement spectrum spans >200 GHz (∼1.6 nm) far beyond the electronic bandwidth (33 GHz) of our acquisition system. Without using asynchronous combs or dispersers and detection arrays, the spectrometer may benefit many gas sensing applications, such as environmental monitoring.

Abstract:This paper presents an innovative space laser ranging technology that utilizes time-frequency co-transfer, effectively meeting the critical demand for precision in space laser ranging applications. The aim is to achieve high-precision ranging by calculating the transfer time using a bidirectional comparison scheme for clock synchronization and an active compensation technique for frequency transfer. Experimental results indicate that, over a 500 m optical path, an impressive ranging accuracy of 0.0005 m is achieved, reflecting significant improvements in precision, stability, and resistance to interference. By integrating time synchronization, frequency transfer, and free-space laser ranging into a cohesive system, this technology demonstrates substantial potential for a wide range of applications.

Abstract:We present a synthetic-wavelength based heterodyne interferometer of optical frequency combs with wide consecutive measurement range for absolute distance measurement. The synthetic wavelength is derived from two wavelengths obtained by two band-pass filters. The interferometric phase of the synthetic wavelength is used as a marker for the pulse-to-pulse alignment, which greatly improves the accuracy of traditional peak finding method. The consecutive measurement range is enlarged by using long fiber to increase the path length difference of the reference and measurement arms. The length of the long fiber is stabilized according to the interferometric phase of a CW laser. The experimental results show the present system can realize an accuracy of 75 nm in 350 mm consecutive measurement range.

Abstract:To exploit the potential of a dual-comb absolute distance ranging system outside a well-controlled laboratory, a compact dual-comb structure is proposed. A beat frequency generated by the repetition rates of two frequency combs serves as an electric reference, which is easily built and maintains a long range and high resolution compared with traditional dual-comb systems. The performance of the proposed method is compared with that of a heterodyne interferometer. The residuals range within -116.6 to 117.2 nm, the standard deviations vary from 46.3 to 137.9 nm, and the non-ambiguity range extension remains reliable throughout a 10-m test. Compared with Michelson-type dual-comb interferometers, this compact dual-comb system omits the redundant optical reference arm, promising practical applications of distance ranging.

Abstract:We report an absolute distance measurement scheme using two simultaneous optical frequency combs with different repetition rates for reliable non-ambiguity range extension. Since the non-ambiguity range extension is susceptible to distance drift during the repetition rate adjustment, pulse trains with two different repetition rates are coupled and directed simultaneously onto a target for coincident distance measurement. The simultaneous measurement avoids the process of adjusting the repetition rate and suppresses the influence of distance drift therein. The distances measured by the two repetition rates are distinguished by type II second harmonic generation. Target movement and atmospheric variation are made to imitate the distance drift, and experimental results show that the non-ambiguity range extension remains effective along the measurement.

Abstract:Dual-comb ranging has emerged as an effective technology for long-distance metrology, providing absolute distance measurements with high speed, precision, and accuracy. Here, we demonstrate a dual-comb ranging method that utilizes a free-space transceiver unit, enabling dead-zone-free measurements and simultaneous ranging with interchanged comb roles to allow for long-distance measurements even when the target is moving. It includes a GPU-accelerated algorithm for real-time signal processing and a free-running single-cavity solid-state dual-comb laser with a carrier wavelength $\lambda_c \approx$ 1055 nm, a pulse repetition rate of 1 GHz and a repetition rate difference of 5.06 kHz. This combination offers a fast update rate and sufficient signal strength to reach a single-shot time-of-flight precision of around 0.1 $\mu$m (i.e. $< \lambda_c/4$) on a cooperative target placed at a distance of more than 40 m. The free-running laser is sufficiently stable to use the phase information for interferometric distance measurements, which improves the single-shot precision to $<$20 nm. To assess the ranging accuracy, we track the motion of the cooperative target when moved over 40 m and compare it to a reference interferometer. The residuals between the two measurements are below 3 $\mu$m. These results highlight the potential of this approach for accurate and dead-zone-free long-distance ranging, supporting real-time tracking with nm-level precision.

Abstract:Dual-comb spectroscopy is becoming a highlighted topic in broadband spectrum measurement techniques because of two outstanding advantages. One is its highly stable output frequency, which leads to an appealing resolution, and the other is the omitting of moving parts, which helps achieve extreme fast sampling rate. Utilizing the traditional radio frequency linked combs, however, obstructs the dual-comb spectroscopy reaching satisfied performance because the phase noise of the radio frequency standard causes the dual-comb mutual coherence to severely degrade. Specifically, traditional frequency comb stabilizes the carrier envelope offset at a radio frequency by a self-reference system, and the order number of each output comb tooth is over a hundred thousand. Thus, the phase noise of the radio frequency reference is significantly multiplied in output optical frequency by the same order of magnitude as the tooth order number. In this paper, we demonstrate an optical frequency linked dual-comb spectrometer where the two combs are locked to a common narrow linewidth laser. In this configuration, the two combs are synchronized at an identical optical frequency, which means that the carrier envelope offset of the two combs are changed to an optical frequency and the order number of the output comb teeth are reduced by two orders of magnitude. Therefore, not only the complex and costly self-reference system can be removed but also the phase noise of the optical frequency of each comb tooth is effectively reduced, which leads to lower mutual frequency jitters and better mutual coherence. To prove the performance, we measure the v(1) + v(3) P branch of (C2H2)-C-13 molecular and the results accord well with the reported line positions and reveals a spectral resolution of 0.086 cm(-1). The average signal-to-noise ratio exceeds 200 : 1 (62.5 ms, 100 times on average) and the noise equivalent coefficient is 6.0 x 10 (6) cm (1).Hz (1/2) . This work provides a solution for pragmatic dual-comb spectroscopy with high resolution and low-cost configuration.

Abstract:A passive dual-comb laser can generate two optical frequency combs with different repetition frequencies. These repetition differences have high relative stability and mutual coherence through passive common-mode noise suppression without complex tight phase locking from a single-laser cavity. The comb-based frequency distribution requires the dual-comb laser to have a high repetition frequency difference. This paper presents a high repetition frequency difference bidirectional dual-comb fiber laser based on an all-polarization-maintaining cavity configuration and a semiconductor saturable absorption mirror with single polarization output. The proposed comb laser has a standard deviation of 69 Hz and an Allan deviation of 1.17 × 10 −7 at τ = 1 s under different repetition frequencies of 12.815 MHz. Moreover, a transmission experiment has been conducted. Owing to the passive common-mode noise rejection capability of dual-comb laser, after passing an 84 km fiber link, the frequency stability of the repetition frequency difference signal is improved by two orders of magnitude than the repetition frequency signal at the receiver side.
