Abstract:As one of the most common failure types of arch bridges, stability is one of the critical aspects for the design of arch bridges. Using 3D finite element model in ABAQUS, this paper has studied the stability performance of an arch bridge with inclined arch ribs and hangers, and the analysis also took the effects of geometrical and material nonlinearity into account. The impact of local buckling and residual stress of steel plates on global stability and the applicability of fiber model in stability analysis for steel arch bridges were also investigated. The results demonstrate an excellent stability of the arch bridge because of the transverse constraint provided by transversely-inclined hangers. The distortion of cross section, local buckling and residual stress of ribs has an insignificant effect on the stability of the structure, and the accurate ultimate strength may be obtained from a fiber model analysis. This study also shows that the yielding of the arch ribs has a significant impact on the ultimate capacity of the structure, and the bearing capacity may also be approximately estimated by the initial yield strength of the arch rib.

Abstract:A convenient approach is proposed for analyzing the ultimate load carrying capacity of concrete filled steel tubular (CFST) arch bridge with stiffening girders. A fiber model beam element is specially used to simulate the stiffening girder and CFST arch rib. The geometric nonlinearity, material nonlinearity, influence of the construction process and the contribution of prestressing reinforcement are all taken into consideration. The accuracy of this method is validated by comparing its results with experimental results. Finally, the ultimate strength of an abnormal CFST arch bridge with stiffening girders is investigated and the effect of construction method is discussed. It is concluded that the construction process has little effect on the ultimate strength of the bridge.

Abstract:The idea can meet with the bridge aesthetics better that is to install the longitudinal linkage between 2 special-shaped arches.Through the project calculation of Jigeng Bridge in Nantong,the structure internal force of arch rib was changed greatly,especially the shearing force of the contiguous arch rib sections was strengthened evidently after installing the longitudinal linkage.Meanwhile,the external stability of the whole arch rib was lowered but the total rigidity of the whole bridge and natural frequencies were improved.The results showed that the idea should be adopted in the practical design of special-shaped arch bridge.

Abstract:The prestressed concrete deck-tied arch bridge doesn't only have a long span, good appearance and economy, but also have the characteristics of low requirements to the foundation. It changes traditional tied arch bridge into deck-tied arch bridge, which looks like sunflower-shaped arch and prestressed steel strands are embedded in box girder on the top of the arch. Taking Yingbin Bridge as engineering background, the reasonable analysis model was established and behaviour of the bridge under design load was analyzed. The results shown that the design project is reasonable, prestressing force embedded in box girder can balance horizontal thrust in arch bridge effectively, improving the internal force of the main arch ring.

Abstract:The project and method of the existing rigid frame arch bridge reinforced by changing arch structural system into arch and cable system is presented.Based on a typical bridge,the analysis of the static behavior of the bridge before and after the strengthening is preformed.The results show that the mid-span bending moment and deflection of the reinforced bridge are reduced obviously and the capacity of carrying load is greatly improved.It is proved that it is an effective method to reinforce the existing rigid frame arch bridges built early and enhance its capacity of carrying load.It has definite theory significance and practical engineering value.Constructional procedure of the bridge reinforced by changing arch structural system into arch and cable system and the reasonable cable force is also presented.

Abstract:With the increase of traffic volume and load, the carrying capacity of the early constructed reinforced concrete multi-ribbed arch bridges are obviously lower, it is necessary to take various measures to strengthen them and enhance bearing capacity of these bridges. This paper proposes a reinforcement method by adding cable tower at the two ends abutments of the arch bridges and the inclined cables to improve behavior of the multi-rib arch bridge. The main idea is that additional bridge towers are set on both sides of the single span ribbed arch bridge abutment to hang stayed cables. Taking a typical reinforced concrete multi-rib arch bridge-Baibu Bridge as engineering background, the design of strengthening project was given. The analysis and field load test of the bridge were finished. The comparison between spatial finite element analysis results and field bridge test values of strengthened bridge has good agreement. It shows the validity of the proposed strengthening method for the rib arch bridge and improves effectively the bearing capacity of arch bridges.

Abstract:As for the separation of the abutments from the pier due to their improper location on the piers in the curved single-pedestal pier bridges in the urban overpasss,a finite element analysis of the support abutments on the piers is performed in the present paper.Effects of the support abutment deviation with respect to the pier axis on the mechanical behavior of the bridge are discussed.As an example,Shangshi overpass in Hangzhou is conserdered,and the erection of support abutments is investigated.It is seen from numerical results.That the appropriate layout of the abutment can assure lower torque and transverse force,as well as the low possibility that the abutments are separated from the piers.

Abstract:Aiming at the fault and maintenance strategy of concrete bowstring arch bridge,the article analyzes the results based on the grades and vulnerability of components for the bowstring arch bridge from the design and maintenance ideas of the given service life of structure,and looks for the components not only important but also easily damaged in the structures.These components are firstly and importantly plaid attention in the selection of bridge design and maintenance order for realizing the special maintenance.The security and the economy are also weighed to reach the aim of reducing the maintenance cost and efficiently prolonging the service life of bridge.

Abstract:Fly swallow type arch bridge is now increasingly accepted, because it has the advantages of spectacular shape, large span ability, high bearing capacity, no-thrust arch structure, strong adaptation ability of foundation and etc. But in the construction process, there is error between design and construction work, which results in abnormal force performance of the structure, then lead to the safety of the bridge. With the fly swallow type concrete-filled steel tube arch bridge of Shenzhen Bay as the engineering background, the space mechanical characteristics of the arch bridge were analyzed through the finite element method, which evaluate the static and dynamic characteristics of the structure and the structural stability of construction process as well as the finished bridge. The calculation results and analysis show that the main arch ribs and side spans section can satisfy the requirements of bearing capacity of the structure. As a result, the static and dynamic performances of the arch bridge structure are good, which meet the design specification requirements. Fly swallow type arch bridge embodies the times flavors of modern bridge, it provides new ideas for large span curve special-shaped combination arch bridge.

Abstract:In this paper, the main types of the superstructure of concrete bridges in China are summarized. It is pointed out that the main defects in the superstructure of concrete bridges in China are penetration of chloride ion, corrosion of steel bar, overlarge deformation, and cracking of main beams or box girders. Based on the various defects existing in different types of bridge superstructures, the causes and mechanisms of these defects are analyzed from the view of design, construction, material, and service conditions. The relevant maintenance and strengthening countermeasures are put forward, such as crack grouting, shotcreting reinforcement, pasting steel reinforcement plates on surface of beam and box girder, pasting carbon fiber or other fiber materials, increasing the cross section of beam and box girder, adding external prestressed tendons, changing the structural system, adding main girders or strengthening lateral connection among main girders, and other strengthening methods. These strengthening methods aim to improve the durability and bearing capacity of bridges, extend service life of bridges, and assure the integral performance of bridges in the whole life cycle.

Abstract:The Nanpu rainbow bridge is a concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) tied rigid frame through arch bridge with a net span of 120m.The major items of static loads tests,layout of measurement points and methods of force loads are presented.A space finite element model of the whole bridge is developed to analyze the tests of static loads.The comparison values of theoretic calculations and tests of three kinds of loading cases in static loads tests are provided,and some helpful conclusions are drawn as well.

Abstract:In recent years, the construction of a CFST arch bridge has developed rapidly; however, as a kind of structural system dominated by compression, with the increase of material strength and span, the stability of the main arch of the CFST arch bridge has become more and more important. In this paper, the finite element method is used to analyze the hanger force and the main arch stability of the long-span CFST arch bridge. Combined with the Shenzhen Rainbow Bridge project, the axial force of the hanger, the internal force, and stability of the main arch of the arch bridge are studied. In the establishment of the finite element model, considering the actual operation of the arch bridge, the model simulates the interaction between steel pipe and concrete, it studies the large deformation of CFST arch bridges, and the stress distribution and overall stability of the arch bridge are analyzed. The results show that the main deformation of the CFST arch bridge is the vertical displacement of the deck, and the axial force of most members of the upper arch ribs is greater than that of the lower arch ribs. The axial force and bending moment of the lower arch rib near the arch foot are larger, and the compressive stress of the arch foot is greater than that of other positions. The axial force of the suspender of the arch bridge is the largest at both ends of the hanger and the middle hanger, and the axial force of the other hanger is close to each other, and the axial force changes little under the same case. The buckling modes of the arch are mainly the lateral buckling or flexural buckling of the arch rib outside the plane, which indicates that the vertical stiffness of the arch bridge structure is larger than that of the transverse stiffness. The research results make the load-bearing mechanism of the CFST arch bridge more clear and also provide a certain reference for the design and construction of the CFST arch bridge.

Abstract:Multi-beam box girder bridges have been applied widely throughout the world for many years. However, the cracking of longitudinal joints between the box girders always leads to reflective cracking of the bridge decks during the service period and thus finally affects the safety and durability of the actual bridges. An embedded steel plate (ESP) strengthening method was presented by introducing carbon-A/-B glue to reinforce the longitudinal joints of old multi-beam box girder bridges for this problem. In order to evaluate the feasibility of the proposed method for actual bridges, an old multi-beam box girder bridge was reinforced, and structural parameters including strain, frequency, and deflection were obtained by adopting field tests before and after strengthening. In addition, the corresponding finite element (FE) model of the background bridge was also set up using ANASYS 18.0 to analyze the strengthening process. Analysis results of the actual bridge and FE model indicate that structural stiffness and load lateral transferring performance between the box girders were enhanced after ESP strengthening. Therefore, this proposed strengthening method can be used to improve the mechanical performance of multi-beam box girder bridges and provide reference for such bridge reinforcement.

Abstract:Because of the increasing span of arch bridges, ultimate capacity analysis recently becomes more focused both on design and construction. This paper investigates the static and ultimate behavior of a long-span steel arch bridge up to failure and evaluates the overall safety of the bridge. The example bridge is a long-span steel arch bridge with a 550 m-long central span under construction in Shanghai, China. This will be the longest central span of any arch bridge in the world. Ultimate behavior of the example bridge is investigated using three methods. Comparisons of the accuracy and reliability of the three methods are given. The effects of material nonlinearity of individual bridge element and distribution pattern of live load and initial lateral deflection of main arch ribs as well as yield stresses of material and changes of temperature on the ultimate load-carrying capacity of the bridge have been studied. The results show that the distribution pattern of live load and yield stresses of material have important effects on bridge behavior. The critical load analyses based on the linear buckling method and geometrically nonlinear buckling method considerably overestimate the load-carrying capacity of the bridge. The ultimate load-carrying capacity analysis and overall safety evaluation of a long-span steel arch bridge should be based on the geometrically and materially nonlinear buckling method. Finally, the in-plane failure mechanism of long-span steel arch bridges is explained by tracing the spread of plastic zones.

Abstract:It is difficult for a high-speed railway to locate an orthogonal bridge site so that it has to enlarge its spans as it has large radius,long slope and numerous overpasses.The normal crossing continuous beam may lead to longer bridge lacking sense of beauty due to its higher beam.However,this problem can be overcome by adopting tied arch which may effectively lower the height of the beam and make the bridge look lighter.For this reason,tied arch is favored in selection of high-speed overpass type.The tie-arch bridge,with thrust from the tied arch,is considered as one of rational choices in area where the height of bridge is restricted or the bridge site is geologically unfavorable and large spans are required.Therefore,this paper carries out analysis and research on the structural characteristics and mechanical properties of high-speed railway prestressed concrete tied arch,high-speed railway prestressed concrete-filled steel tube tied arch and high-speed railway steel box tied arch.
