Abstract:In this work, we design, manufacture and package a large delay adjustable silicon-based true-time delay line chip. Specifically, we focused on evaluating the performance of a single switch within the chip. Meanwhile, in order to ensure efficient and accurate measurement of the switching state voltage while mitigating the impact of state voltage drift, we devise a semi-automatic scanning program, which facilitates the precise acquisition of the switching state voltage over an extended period. The chip showcases impressive features, including a substantial delay step of 20 ps and a maximum delay time of 2.54 ns. Moreover, it exhibits commendable signal transmission capabilities, with a clear and observable eye diagram shape at 30Gbps under a 2 51 –1 pseudo-random bit sequence (PRBS) signal. Furthermore, we find that the power penalty difference between the longest and shortest signal paths is minimal, measuring only 0.1686 dB.

Abstract:Vectorial optical fields have garnered significant attention due to their potential applications in areas such as optical nano-fabrication, optical micromachining, quantum information processing, optical imaging, and so on. Traditional compact vectorial optical generators with amplitude modulation perform poorly in terms of diffraction effect reduction. To tackle this problem, the refractive 4f system in amplitude modulation is longitudinally aligned using an optimization approach presented in this research. The phase images used for longitudinal alignment are loaded into the liquid crystal spatial light modulator (SLM), and the distance between the lens and the mirror in the reflective 4f system is adjusted for longitudinal alignment by compensating for the neglected phase in the integrated module for the compact vectorial optical-field generator. The spot images collected by the CCD are processed using the improved eight-direction Sobel operator and Roberts function, and the longitudinal alignment in the reflective 4f system is determined by the sharpness of the image. The sharpness of the edges of the lines and the overall image are both enhanced after optimization compared to before optimization. The results demonstrate that the proposed method can effectively reduce the longitudinal alignment error of the reflective 4f system in the amplitude modulation of the compact vectorial optical-field generator, lessen the diffraction effect, and improve the performance of the system.

Abstract:At the L/S band, the digital array radars with digital beam-forming characteristics require a compact RF module for a plane array. Such an RF module would require a small-sized local clock generation to synchronize with the central distributed clock signal. This paper proposes a 0.04 mm(2), broadband local clock generation for the RF module in digital array radar. In such a multi-band digital array radar, the linearity of the clock generator is a bottleneck. A linearity enhanced algorithm for switched-capacitor digitally-assisted oscillators is proposed in this paper. In this linearity enhancement technique, a calibration resistor array is used to improve frequency-tuning characteristics. The digitally-assisted oscillator has a highly linearized frequency tuning curve without demanding much more power and silicon area. A prototype is fabricated using a 55-nm CMOS process. From measurement, it has a frequency tuning range from 1.3 GHz to 2.5 GHz while occupying 225 x 180 mu m(2). The measured coarse bank tuning maximum DNL is 0.39 LSB, and the maximum INL is 4.64 LSB, which has been reduced to 43% of the other state-of-art work. The maximum power consumption is 15.8 mW from a 1.2 V supply voltage.

Abstract:We design, fabricate, and characterize a 7-bit reconfigurable optical true time delay line consisting of Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) switches on the silicon photonics platform. Variable optical attenuators (VOAs) are embedded to suppress the inter-symbol crosstalk caused by the finite extinction ratio of switches. The device can provide a maximum of 1.27 ns delay with a 10 ps resolution over a wide wavelength range. Eye diagram measurement of a 25 Gbps 2(51)-1 pseudo-random bit sequence (PRBS) signal reveals the power penalties only increase 0.17 dB and 0.77 dB after transmission through the shortest (reference) and the longest (1.27 ns delay) paths, respectively.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate optically tunable buffer in a nano-scale silicon microring resonator with a 20-mu m radius. The delay-tuning mechanism is based on the red shift of the resonance induced by the thermal nonlinear effect. We use a non-retum-to-zero (NRZ) pseudo random bit sequence (PRBS) signal with different data rates as the probe signal, and investigate its delay performance under different pump powers.

Abstract:Optical switching delay line (OSDL) is a structure consisting of cascaded optical switches and optical waveguides with different lengths. Different propagation paths can be selected to obtain the desired optical delay by controlling the optical switches in their through or cross states. Because of its high delay accuracy, large bandwidth and effective control, OSDL has become one of the key components of the microwave photonic beamforming system. However, calibrations of the through and cross states of all the optical switches are necessary due to fabrication errors before the OSDL can be used in real applications. At present, four typical calibration methods have been demonstrated: adding optical power monitoring taps, variable optical attenuators (VOAs), or phase shifters (PSs) into the OSDL chip, and measuring the transmission spectra of the chip under different driving voltages. However, adding additional optical power monitoring taps, VOAs, or PSs will increase the insertion loss and complexity of the OSDL chip, while the calibration method based on transmission spectra is still complicated and time-consuming. In this paper, a non-invasive calibration method for OSDL based on iterative optimization is proposed. Only the final output port of the OSDL chip is used as the optical power monitor, and the control voltages for all the optical switches in the through and cross states are iteratively optimized with the goal of achieving the largest output extinction ratio at the output port. As a proof of concept, we calibrated a 5-Bit silicon OSDL chip by using the proposed iterative optimization method, and all the delay states of the OSDL chip were measured, which were in good agreement with those of ODSL calibrated by using the optical power monitoring taps.

Abstract:This investigation experimentally demonstrates the feasibility of the electrically and continuously tunable optical delay line using a semiconductor laser. The time delays for a 10 Gbps data signal are electrically delayed by adjusting the bias current of laser, and the maximum delay is approximately 41 ps. We also measure the bit error rate against the receiver power by various bias currents and wavelength detuning (Δλ). Measurements are made to verify the feasibility to use in optical communication systems.

Abstract:The structure optimization for a binary reconfigurable true time delay lines (RTTDL) based on the Mach- Zehnder interferometer (MZI) switches is proposed. Firstly, the number of the variable optical attenuator (VOA), which is generally used to make up for the imperfectness of the MZI switch and improves the RTTDL 's flatness of broadband amplitude response and the delay accuracy, is minimized. Meanwhile, by adopting a pair of photoelectric detectors (PD) between every two MZI switches for power monitoring, the initialization time can be greatly reduced owing to the realization of the parallel initialization. On the other hand, with the help of the PDs, a continuously adjustable delay scheme is put forward by adjusting the allocation ratio of the last MZI switch. The proof-of-principle calculations are carried out to verify the optimization. The results show that the proposed optimization not only reduces the power consumption, the optical link loss and the integration volume caused by the VOAs, but also solves the problem that the binary RTTDL has only discrete delay states.

Abstract:In this work we present an automatic calibration technique for switched Optical True Time Delay Lines which allows the control of all of the switchers without relaying on intermediate attenuators nor external test ports, thus optimizing the number of active elements on chip and the footprint. This technique has been used for the characterization of a delay line fabricated on a silicon photonic chip.The accuracy and reliability of this technique were validated for applications beyond beamforming by utilizing the calibration data to synthesize variable optical interleavers.

Abstract:We present a complete analysis of the operation of an ultra-fast tunable parallel optical delay line. Based on our analysis, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a generalized serial–parallel delay line structure, which provides better scalability with respect to the number of timeslots. The delay line uses one electro-optic modulator and an all-fiber delay lattice. We also present a discussion on two important performance measures of this delay line – the tuning speed and the optical power loss.

Abstract:An approach to implement photonic-assisted time-interleaved analog-to-digital conversion and its calibration method are presented. The analog modulated optical signal is divided into M channels, suffering different time delay induced by optical delay lines which provide great flexibility in producing time intervals and is then sampled by electronic analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). The channel mismatches resulting in performance degradation are estimated by a modified sine wave fitting method. The time mismatch and other mismatches are corrected by fine optical delay adjustment and digital processing, respectively. A four-channel photonic-assisted time-interleaved analog-to-digital converter (TIADC) system operating at 40 GSa s(-1) was demonstrated experimentally. The photonic-assisted TIADC system was tested with a 6.31 GHz sine wave signal, exhibiting 40.3 dB signal-to-noise and distortion ratio (SINAD) and 57.6 dBc spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR). It is shown that the SINAD is dominated by the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the analog optical link and the SFDR of the proposed system is limited by the linearity of the link.

Abstract:A tunable time delay for a 100-ps pulse is achieved via a SOA cascaded band-pass filter, which can be tailored by tuning the filter or changing the SOA injection current. For a single pulse, when the pulse propagates through the cascaded system, a delay of 99.6 ps and an advance of 42.6 ps can be achieved by altering the SOA injection current at two different wavelengths located in the red band and blue band of the filter, respectively. The corresponding tunable delay range is 165 ps, and the maximum delay-bandwidth product (DBP) is 1.65. For an optical sequence, to our knowledge, it is the first time that the time delay is tailored over 145.6 ps corresponding to a DBP of 1.46 by tuning the wavelength from 1556.075 to 1556.955 nm, and 45.2 ps (95.6 ps) advance (delay) by tuning the injection current from 100 to 500 mA at 1556.155 nm (1556.955 nm). The dependence of the time delay on the injection current and filtering configuration has been discussed based on plenty of experiments data. Based on SOA's fast switching, this device can be used for signal synchronization and bit-by-bit signal processing in a communication system.

Abstract:We theoretically study the group-delay characteris- tics of a silicon microring resonator based on the coupled mode theory, and experimentally demonstrate error-free operations of an on-chip delay line using a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) microring resonator with a 20- m radius. Four signals of different modula- tionformatsareexaminedat5Gb/s,includingreturn-to-zero(RZ), carrier-suppressed return-to-zero (CSRZ), return-to-zero duobi- nary (RZ-DB), and return-to-zero alternate-mark-inversion (RZ- AMI). Bit error rate (BER) measurements show that the maximal delaytimeswitherror-freeoperationsare80,95,110,and65ps,re- spectively,correspondingtoafractionalgroupdelayof 0.4, 0.5, 0.55, and 0.35. The differences in delay and signal degrada- tionshavebeeninvestigatedbasedonthesignalspectraandpattern dependences.Althoughthedelaysaredemonstratedinasinglering resonator, the analysis is applicable in slow-light resonance struc- tures such as all-pass filters (APF) and coupled resonator optical waveguides (CROW).

Abstract:We have experimentally demonstrated that the linearity of a silicon Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) could be improved by optimizing its phase-shifter length (PSL). Through the optimization of the PSL, the third order intermodulation distortion of the silicon MZM could be 16.7 dB lower than that of a commercial LiNbO 3 MZM. The spurious free dynamic range of the link with the silicon MZM could be 4.1 dB higher than that with the LiNbO 3 MZM.

Abstract:Silicon-organic hybrid (SOH) modulators are promising as they have large bandwidth, high modulation efficiency and low optical loss. In this paper, we present the optical and electrical design and simulation of a high-speed travelling wave SOH modulator with multiple interplay parameters. We also implement the electro-optical co-optimization to delve into the influence of the key design parameters and propose the design guideline. The results demonstrate a modulator with 3 dB bandwidth of 72 GHz, modulation efficiency of 1.26 Vmm and optical loss less than 1 dB.
