Abstract:Hydrothermal growth of calcite single crystal was studied by using NaCl and KCl solutions which have been considered to be naturally existing as the saline mineralizer. Both of NaCl and KCl solutions were found to be the effective mineralizer for the growth of calcite crystal of optical grade. Optically clear single crystals of calcite could be grown from each chloride solution.

Abstract:Hydroxyapatite powders were hydrothermally produced in the present study using CaCO3 and CaHPO4 · 2H2O in an autoclave at various temperature and for different time. The particle size of hydroxyapatite was observed to be very fine, uniform, and less than 100 nm. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were used to characterized the morphology, structure, crystallite size and chemical composition of hydroxyapatite. The experimental result shows that perfect and larger hydroxyapatite crystals can be obtained with increasing temperature and reaction time. The hydroxyapatite crystals synthesized hydrothermally at 200 °C for 8 h were prismatic or needle crystals possessing size around 60 nm in the direction of section, and the fact of entrance of structural carbonate into apatite structure was demonstrated by FTIR. The synthesized nanohydroxyapatites were similar to crystals of human bone in morphology, structure and components. It can be used for bone prostheses.

Abstract:Nano-polycrystalline coesite block has been synthesized by domestic hinge type cubic press by using high-purity micrometer α-SiO2 as raw material under 5 GPa and 1000 ℃.In this process,the micrometer α-SiO2 has been transformed directly into coesite polycrystal.X-ray diffraction analysis indicates that the bulk material contains coesite single phase only.The scanning electron microscopic picture shows that the average size of the synthesized coesite crystal is about 100 nm with a microhardness of 1406 MPa.

Abstract:Calcite single crystals could be hydrotherally grown in newly discovered NH4NO3 solution even at 150°C. The solubility of calcite in NH4NO3 solution was 4.0g/l at 100°C and 30MPa, and increased with increasing temperature and pressure. The dislocation densities of grown calcite crystals on as-cleaved and etched seeds were 4×105 and 2×104cm-2, respectively. The growth rate on etched seeds was dependent upon both growth temperature and concentration of solution. The maximum growth rate was 45μm/day in 0.2M NH4NO3 solution at 200°C and 15MPa. Calcite crystals grown on etched seeds had the same order of dislocation density as that of high grade natural crystals, and were free from OH- and NO3- ions. This moderate growth condition allows us to employ a Teflon liner for avoiding the contamination from the pressure vessel to grow the optical grade of calcite single crystals.

Abstract:Two kinds of solvents, Ca(NO3)2 and NH4NO3 solutions, were found to be very effective for growing calcite single crystals without contamination of metal ions such as Na+ and K+. Spontaneously grown crystals with high transparency had a rhombohedral form bounded by (1011) faces. NH4NO3 solvent gives great advantage in reduceing the growth temperature below 200°C. The character of crystals grown in Ca(NO3)2 and NH4NO3 solutions were compared with natural calcite crystals using FT-IR spectroscopy.

Abstract:Single crystals are usually faceted solids with homogeneous chemical compositions. Biogenic and synthetic calcite single crystals, however, have been found to incorporate macromolecules, spurring investigations of how large molecules are distributed within the crystals without substantially disrupting the crystalline lattice. Here, electron tomography reveals how random, three-dimensional networks of agarose nanofibers are incorporated into single crystals of synthetic calcite by allowing both high- and low-energy fiber/crystal interface facets to satisfy network curvatures. These results suggest that physical entrapment of polymer aggregates is a viable mechanism by which macromolecules can become incorporated inside inorganic single crystals. As such, this work has implications for understanding the structure and formation of biominerals as well as toward the development of new high-surface area, single-crystal composite materials.

Abstract:Monodispersed copolymer latex particles functionalized by surface carboxylate groups are used as effective colloidal templates for the controlled crystallization of calcium carbonate in solution. After template removal, well-defined, calcite single crystals exhibiting a rhombohedral morphology and uniform surface pores are obtained. The surface pore size of the calcite single crystals can be readily adjusted through introduction of latex particles with varied sizes. The effects of the surface functional groups of the latexes, the concentration of the latex dispersion and CaCl2 solution and the temperature during the CaCO3 crystallization have been investigated. A three-step mechanism has been proposed for the formation of the composite particles consisting of calcite single crystals and latex particles, and it has been demonstrated that this synthesis strategy is potentially extendable to the synthesis of regularly shaped composite particles consisting of single crystals of other inorganic materials, such as CU2O. In addition, surface-patterned calcite crystals with hierarchical architectures are prepared at a relatively high concentration of latex particles, which act as both colloidal templates and crystal growth modifiers.

Abstract:Synthetic calcite single crystals, due to their strong crystal habit, tend to grow into characteristic rhombohedra. In the nature, biogenic calcite crystals form composites together with biomacromolecular materials, spurring investigations of how the growing calcite single crystals change their habit to satisfy the curvature of the organic phase. In this work, we examine calcite crystallization on a flat surface of glass slide and a curved surface of polystyrene (PS) sphere. The crystals exhibit tiny contact area onto the glass substrate that is averagely only 15% of their projected area on the substrate. In sharp contrast, the contact area greatly increase to above 75% of the projected area, once magnesium ions or agarose gel networks are introduced into the crystallization media. Furthermore, the calcite crystals form rough and step-like interfaces with a curved surface. However, the interfaces become smooth and curved as the crystals grow in presence of magnesium ions or agarose gel networks. The discrepancy between the interfacial structures implies kinetic effects of the additives on the crystallization around the surfaces. This work may provide implications for understanding the formation mechanisms of single-crystal composite materials.

Abstract:Synthetic single crystals are usually homogeneous solids. Biogenic single crystals, however, can incorporate biomacromolecules and become inhomogeneous solids so that their properties are also extrinsically regulated by the incorporated materials. The discrepancy between the properties of synthetic and biogenic single crystals leads to the idea to modify the internal structure of synthetic crystals to achieve nonintrinsic properties by incorporation of foreign material. Intrinsically colorless and diamagnetic calcite single crystals are turned into colored and paramagnetic solids, through incorporation of Au and Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles without significantly disrupting the crystalline lattice of calcite. The crystals incorporate the nanoparticles and gel fibers when grown in agarose gel media containing the nanoparticles, whereas the solution‐grown crystals do not. As such, our work extends the long‐history gel method for crystallization into a platform to functionalize single‐crystalline materials.
Textural properties of synthetic nano-calcite produced by hydrothermal carbonation of calcium hydroxide

Abstract:The hydrothermal carbonation of calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) at high pressure of CO2 (initial PCO2 1/4 55 bar) and moderate to high temperature (30 and 90 1C) was used to synthesize fine particles of calcite. This method allows a high carbonation efficiency (about 95% of Ca(OH)2-CaCO3 conversion), a significant production rate (48 kg/m3 h) and high purity of product (about 96%). However, the various initial physicochemical conditions have a strong influence on the crystal size and surface area of the synthesized calcite crystals. The present study is focused on the estimation of the textural properties of synthesized calcite (morphology, specific surface area, average particle size, particle size distribution and particle size evolution with reaction time), using Rietveld refinements of X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectra, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) measurements, and scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) observations. This study demonstrate that the pressure, the temperature and the dissolved quantity of CO2 have a significant effect on the average particle size, specific surface area, initial rate of precipitation, and on the morphology of calcium carbonate crystals. In contrast, these PTx conditions used herein have an insignificant effect on the carbonation efficiency of Ca(OH)2. Finally, the results presented here demonstrate that nano-calcite crystals with high specific surface area (SBET 1/4 6-10m2/g) can be produced, with a high potential for industrial applications such as adsorbents and/or filler in papermaking industry.

Abstract:Large single crystals of calcite are generated from amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) using a dynamic control strategy in which local heating is used to define when and where nucleation occurs. Morphologies ranging from discs to serpentine strips are generated by independently controlling nucleation and growth, and the mechanism and energetics of the transformation are studied using in situ transmission electron microscopy. The use of amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) as a precursor phase affords organisms with outstanding control over the formation of calcite and aragonite biominerals. Essential to this strategy is that the ACC is maintained within confined volumes in the absence of bulk water. This ensures that the ACC undergoes a pseudomorphic transformation and that the organism can independently control nucleation and growth. However, comparable control has proven hard to achieve in synthetic systems. Here, a straightforward method is demonstrated for controlling the crystallization of ACC thin films in which nucleation is first triggered using a heated probe, and then growth is sustained by incubating the film at a lower temperature. By independently controlling nucleation and growth, sub‐millimeter calcite single crystals can be generated when and where it is desired, morphologies ranging from discs to squares to serpentine strips can be created, and arrays of crystals formed. The mechanism and energetics of crystallization of the ACC are studied using in situ transmission electron microscopy and continuity between the ACC and calcite at the growth front is demonstrated. It is envisaged that this method can be applied to the formation of large single crystals of alternative functional materials that form via amorphous precursor phases.

Abstract:Single-crystal PbTiO3 nanoflakes have been synthesized successfully by a hydrothermal method. The as-prepared powders were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution TEM (HRTEM), and selected area electron diffraction (SAED). It was found that KOH concentration played a key role in the growth of single-crystal tetragonal perovskite PbTiO3 nanoflakes, and the morphology of PbTiO3 crystallites can be controlled by adjusting the KOH concentration.

Abstract:A family of calcite nanocrystal superstructures with unusual morphology were obtained from crystallization of calcite by the CO2 gas diffusion technique in the presence of a bioinspired double hydrophilic block copolymer, polyethyleneglycol-block-poly (L-aspartic acid). From the typical calcite rhombohedra as a starting situation, the morphology can be systematically varied via various unusual porous mesocrystal morphologies to hemispheres composed of fine calcite triangles. The formation of mesocrystals is starting at a polymer concentration of only 10(-3) g/L, and shows two remarkable results: (a) the reported bioinspired block copolymer is the so far most active polymer for mesocrystal formation reported to our knowledge, and (b) the data prove that nucleation promoters exist, which can form nanocrystals for mesocrystal formation even without enhanced colloidal stabilization. Mechanical Properties of Single-Crystal Calcite and Their Temperature and Strain-Rate Effects

Abstract:Calcite is the most stable crystalline phase of calcium carbonate. It is applied or found in composite products, the food industry, biomineralization, archaeology, and geology, and its mechanical properties have attracted more and more attention. In this paper, the mechanical behaviors of single-crystal calcite under uniaxial tension in different directions were simulated with the molecular dynamics method. The obtained elastic moduli are in good agreement with the experimental results. It has been found from further research that single-crystal calcite has typical quasi-brittle failure characteristics, and its elastic modulus, fracture strength, and fracture strain are all strongly anisotropic. The tensile failure is caused by dislocation emission, void formation, and phase transition along the [010] and [421] directions, but by continuous dislocation glide and multiplication along the [421¯] direction. The fracture strength, fracture strain, and elastic modulus are all sensitive to temperature, but only elastic modulus is not sensitive to strain rate. The effects of temperature and logarithmic strain rate on fracture strength are in good agreement with the predictions of fracture dynamics.

Abstract:Metastable Ni 3 S 4 with good crystallinity has been firstly synthesized via a single-source approach using nickel diethyldithiocarbamate as precursor under hydrothermal conditions. The optical properties of the as-prepared Ni 3 S 4 are evaluated. It is found that the reaction temperature is of importance to the formation of Ni 3 S 4 crystallites.

Abstract:Crystallization of calcite from different concentrated calcium chloride solutions by the CO(2) vapor diffusion technique in the presence of polystyrenesulfonate (PSS) yields defined assemblies of nanoparticles with unusual morphology. From the typical calcite rhombohedra, the morphology can be systematically varied via rounded edges and truncated triangles to concavely bent lens-like shapes. Although these "crystals" are apparently well facetted as observed in light microscopy, electron microscopy analysis and BET isotherms reveal that the structures are highly porous and are composed of almost perfectly three-dimensionally aligned calcite nanocrystals, scaffolded to the final, partly curved structures. The formation of all mesostructures is discussed within the framework of a polymer-mediated structure-formation process, in which the polymer is acting in four different ways. The present model case also provides evidence for the importance of nonclassical mesoscopic processes in polymer-controlled crystallization in general.

Abstract:Abstract This study focuses on the synthesis of synthetic calcium monosilicate ceramic from chicken eggshells and rice husks waste through the mechanochemical route that relatively straightforward without adding any binders. Synthetic calcium monosilicate was mixed using a 1:1 ratio of calcined eggshell and rice husk ash, which both materials known as rich in calcium oxide and silica sources, respectively. The mixed powder was pressed using uniaxial pressing before fired at 1100°C, 1150°C, 1200°C, 1250°C, and 1300°C for 120 minutes with a heating rate of 5°C/min. The XRD spectrum from 1100°C to 1200°C mainly consists of pseudowollastonite (ICSD: 98-005-2576), wollastonite and silicon dioxide phases. However, as the sintering temperature increases, the wollastonite phases was completely transformed into pseudowollastonite, leaving some unreacted silica.

Abstract:Calcite is a uniaxial, birefringent crystal, which in its optically transparent form, has been used for animal eye lenses, the trilobite being one such animal. Because of the calcite birefringence there is a difficulty in using calcite as a lens. When the propagation direction of incoming light is not exactly on the c-axis, the mages blur. In this paper, calcite blurring is evaluated, and the non-blurring by a crystallin eye lens is compared to a calcite one.
