Abstract:The thermal decomposition of three ultra-fine CaCO3 having different particle sizes and agglomeration states was investigated. The kinetic parameters obtained by using the contracting volume mechanism R-3 and Coats and Redfern's equation were in good agreement with those using Kissinger non-mechanism equation. Furthermore, the result showed that a considerable diminution of the activation energy E-a up to 60 similar to 80 kJ . mol(-1) is observed in the case of ultra-fine calcite. The Voigt analysis of the X-ray diffraction data for the samples showed that abnormally large strain existed in the lattice of these samples. We suggest that this may be the reason of their abnormal decomposition behavior. At the same timet we observed that the conglomeration states revealed by TEM and SEM images result in the minute difference between those ultra-fine CaCO3.
Infared and Raman Analysis of Spherical Caco3 Composite

Abstract:The spherical CaCO3 composite was synthesized in the presence of the amphiphilic block copolymer, i.e. polystyrene-b-poly(acrylic acid). It was revealed by XRD analysis that the grains in the composite was calcite with great distortion. Infared and Raman analysis showed that the composite was composed of PS-b-PAA calcium salt and calcite, and the calcite was nano-scaled.

Abstract:The superfine CaCO3 powder coated with SiO2 was synthesized. Through XRD technique, the cell parameters and crystallite size of reference and coated CaCO3 were calculated. SiO2 present in the state of amorphous and prevent the agglomeration and growth of CaCO3 micro-crystal. By comparing the result of XPS analysis of reference compound to coated sample, CaCO3 has been coated successfully with SiO2. The thickness of the coating is about 2. 4 similar to 3. 4nm. From the difference (0. 8eV increase) of the binding energy of Ca2p, rye presume that the hind Si-O-Ca has formed in the surface of CaCO3.
The Mechanical and NIR Studies on Ultrafine Calcium Carbonate Treated by Four Surface Modifiers.

Abstract:Calcium carbonate was surface treated by acrylic acid monomer, its polymerization with varied mean molecular weight and PS/PAA copolymer. Coating efficiencies for these four series of surface-treated calcium carbonate were investigated. They differ from each other in many aspects. We hypothesize that the treating molecules bond to and align on the particle surface in different ways before and after monolayer coverage was reached. NIR spectra of surface-treated samples studied not only reflected the amount of bonded treating agents by means of the value of absorbance, but also gave rich structural information of surface layer. This gave us a powerful means to investigate the interface of particle surface.

Abstract:With mineral in situ testing technology and ore deposit geochemistry development, calcite has become a hot topic in studying carbonate minerals. Four large-grain calcite crystals from Fujian, China, were used for a detailed study. This study provides a comprehensive data set through mineralogical standard properties and spectral characteristics, including Fourier transform infrared, X-ray fluorescence spectrum, and Raman spectroscopy. Major elements were analyzed using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and Micro-XRF. A high-resolution gas-source stable isotope ratio mass spectrometer was used to test C-O isotope characteristics. The four samples' spectral characteristics and phase composition show excellent uniformity, all with the same characteristic peaks, indicating that they are pure calcite without other impurity minerals. C-O isotope characteristics indicate that Fujian calcite has mantle genetic characteristics, which may be affected by marine carbonate dissolution or sedimentary rock contamination. The variation of Fe and Mn contents may indicate that the four samples formed at different metallogenic stages.

From Synthetic to Biogenic Mg-containing Calcites: a Comparative Study Using FTIR Microspectroscopy

Abstract:The formation mechanism of the thermodynamically unstable calcite phase, very high Mg calcite, in biological organisms such as sea urchin or corallina algae has been an enigma for a very long time. In contrast to conventional methods such as KBr pellet Fourier Transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD), FTIR microspectroscopy (FTIRM) provides additional information about a local disorder such as an amorphous phase or the occlusion of Mg ions in the calcite lattice. In this work, we characterise for the first time systematically synthetic and biogenic Mg-containing calcium carbonate samples (especially sea urchin teeth-SUT) in detail by using two FTIRM instruments and compare these samples with KBr pellet FTIR measurements. Furthermore, we present spectra from geogenic calcite and dolomite minerals, recorded with both FTIRM systems, as well as KBr pellet FTIR spectra as references. We analyse the spectra by applying multi-peak curve fitting on the in-plane-bending (nu(4)) and out-of-plane (nu(2)) bands. Based on the obtained results we attribute the two singlet bands at similar to 860-865 cm(-1) and similar to 695-704 cm(-1) observed in the SUT FTIRM spectra to the existence of amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC), and report for the first time the existence of ACC at the mature end of SUT. In the other three studied biominerals, however, we did not find any ACC. Also, based on the FTIRM results, we observe that not only nu(4), but also nu(2) shifts to higher wavenumbers if more calcium ions are replaced by magnesium ions in the calcite lattices.
SPECTROGRAPHIC CHARACTERISTICS OF CALCITE FORMED AT DIFFERENT MINERALIZATION STAGES IN XIAZHUANG URANIUM ORE FIELD

Abstract:The Xiazhuang uranium ore field is the biggest granitic-type uranium ore field in China,and the pitchblende-calcite mineralization type is a new type of high-grade ores. Calcites of different mineralization stages and various colours were sampled based on the field work. Crystal powder X-Ray diffraction,electron paramagnetic resonance and reflectance spectroscopic analyses were profermed in this study. The results included: 1)EPR results showed that the calcites formed during the mineralization stage consist of both Fe~(3+)and Mn~(2+), while the calcites formed after the mineralization stage consist only of Fe~(3+)or Mn~(2+). It might be inferred that pitchblende,the exclusive ore mineral in the Xiazhuang uranium ore field, was precipitated in a redox environment; whereas oxidation or reduction environment did not favor the precipitation of pitchblende; 2)The calcites formed in different mineralization stages displayed different reflectance spectroscopic characteristics in minor elements and aquosity, the calcites formed during the mineralization stage had an absorbility of Fe~(3+)at 890 nm and 400 nm wavelengths, respectively, the calcites formed later than the mineralization stage had an absorbility of H_(2)O and OH at 1922 nm and 1400 nm, respectively; 3) Reflectance could be used as a proxy of the (mineral's) colour in VIS wavelength. In our case redness was more suitable to be used as the proxy for the colour of calcite than grayness and brightness.
Synthesis of Cerium(IV) Oxide Ultrafine Particles by Solid‐State Reactions

Abstract:CeO2 ultrafine particles were prepared by solid‐state reactions at room temperature. These particles were found to have very fine particle sizes (∼3 nm) with a fluorite structure (a= 5.42 Å). BET measurements showed that the surface area of the particles was 96.2 m2/g. The use of two different precursors was found to affect the size of the CeO2 particles. We discuss the effect of calcination at different temperatures on the morphology, size, and BET surface area of CeO2 particles. A salt byproduct coating prevented agglomeration of the CeO2 particles.
Elemental Geochemical Characteristics of Calcites from the Pingqiao Fluorite-Lithium Deposit in Liuzhi, Guizhou: the LA-ICP-MS Study

Abstract:The Pingqiao fluorite-lithium deposit in Liuzhi, Guizhou is located in the southwest margin of Yangtze Block. Its lithium orebodies are hosted in the mudstone and micrite of the Permian Longyin Formation. Cookeite is considered as the main Li-carrier mineral of the deposit. Calcite is one of the most important gangue minerals in the deposit, and is distributed widely from the early-re to post-ore stages. Especially, lithium-bearing mineral was closely intergrown with some calcite veins whose trace elements may contain important mineralization information. Detailed studies of the field geological features, hand specimens and microscopic features of ores show that calcites of the early-ore stage (Cal-1) and the main-ore stage (Cal-2) are closely related to the lithium mineralization, but post-ore stage calcite (Cal-3) was formed after the lithium mineralization. The results of element contents determined by using the in-situ LA-ICP-MS analysis show that calcites of various stages have obviously different contents of trace and rare earth elements (REE) and significantly different REE distribution patterns. Generally, calcites have relatively high contents of Si, Na, Mg, Fe, Sr and Mn (mostly more than 100 ppm), indicating that these elements are enriched in the ore-forming fluids, and silicification, pyritization and dolomitization are closely related to the lithium mineralization in the deposit. Especially, trace element compositions of the Cal-1 and Cal-2 calcites are basically consistent, indicating that their ore-forming fluid sources have continuous evolutionary and inheritant relationships. Compared with the Cal-1 and Cal-2 calcites, the Cal-3 calcite has relatively enriched Al, Na, K and other elements, but relatively depleted Fe and Mn elements, with its trace element compositions quite different from those of calcites of the Li mineralization stage, indicating that there is a certain difference between the ore-forming fluid source of the post-ore-stage calcite and that of the ore-stage calcite. Moreover, the Cal-1 and Cal-2 calcites have weak negative/positive Eu anomalies, with δEu values generally decreased from the Cal-1 to Cal-2 calcites, and have MREE- and HREE-enriched REE distribution patterns, while the Cal-3 calcites of post-ore-stage have obviously negative Eu anomalies with flat REE distribution patterns. This indicates that the reducibility of the fluid was increased after the Li mineralization. In conclusion, there are significant differences in compositions of trace and rare earth elements among calcites of different stages. It is believed that the geochemical characteristics of trace elements and rare earth elements of calcites can be used to guide the geochemical exploration of lithium resources in the region.
Elaboration, Structure and Luminescence of Sphere-Like CaF2:RE Sub-Microparticles by Ionic Liquids Based Hydrothermal Process

Abstract:A new and simple method for the synthesis of rare earth ion doped CaF₂ (CaF₂:RE³⁺) sub- microparticles is presented, using an ionic liquids based hydrothermal process. The structural properties of the CaF₂ nanoparticles were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The CaF₂ nanoparticles exhibited a sphere-like morphology with a diameter of about 150 nm. During the synthesis, the ionic liquid [bmim]BF₄(1-butyl, 2-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate) acts as both a co-solvent and reactant. The crucial effect of EDTA-2Na (ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid disodium salt) on the formation of CaF₂:RE sub-microparticles was explored and discussed. The strong green (513-569 nm) and strong red (636-685 nm) upconversion emissions of the CaF₂:Er³⁺, Yb³⁺ nanoparticles (λex = 980 nm) were also investigated. The luminescent properties of CaF₂:Eu³⁺ and CaF₂:Ce³⁺,Tb³⁺ were also evaluated. This work may represent a new step in synthesizing fluoride sub-nanocrystals using ionic liquids.
Visualizing the Internal Nano‐crystallinity of Calcite due to Non‐classical Crystallization by 3D Coherent X‐ray Diffraction Imaging

Abstract:We investigate the internal crystallinity of calcite crystals synthesized using two approaches: precipitation from solution and the ammonium carbonate diffusion method. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses reveal that the calcite products precipitated using both approaches had a well‐defined rhombohedron shape, consistent with the euhedral crystal habit of the mineral. The internal structure of these calcite crystals was characterized using Bragg coherent diffraction imaging (BCDI) to determine the 3D electron density and the atomic displacement field. BCDI reconstructions for crystals synthesized using the ammonium carbonate diffusion approach have the expected euhedral shape, with internal strain fields and few internal defects. In contrast, the crystals synthesized by precipitation from solution have very complex external shapes and defective internal structures, presenting null electron density regions and pronounced displacement field distributions. These heterogeneities are interpreted as multiple crystalline domains, created by a non‐classical crystallization mechanism where smaller nanoparticles coalescence into the final euhedral particles. The combined use of SEM, X‐ray diffraction (XRD), and BCDI allows us to structurally differentiate calcite crystals grown with different approaches, opening new opportunities to understand how grain boundaries and internal defects alter calcite reactivity. Abstract:Calcium carbonate(CaCO3) ultrafine particles with different morphologies, including chainlike, flake, rod, rhombohedral, spherical and hollow spherical were successfully synthesized by a controlled precipitation method. The products were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The main factors to influence the crystal structures and morphologies of CaCO3 in preparation process are discussed, which is helpful to understand the crystal nucleation and growth of CaCO3 ultrafine particles.

Abstract:Abstract This study delves into the synthesis of CaSO $$_{4}$$ 4 materials using the Pechini and sol-gel methods, followed by heat treatment up to 900 $$^{\circ }$$ ∘ C. X-ray analysis discerned distinct phases, with one method yielding pure orthorhombic anhydrite and the other predominantly producing a mixture of orthorhombic anhydrite and bassanite. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showcased homogeneous columnar morphologies for the anhydrite samples and irregularly sized particles for the alternative method. Photoluminescence (PL) measurements demonstrated emissions in the visible range (approximately 400 nm to 700 nm) with differences noted between synthesis methods. Low-temperature Raman spectroscopy (20 K to room temperature) unveiled unique vibrational modes, notably with the orthorhombic phase of anhydrite exhibiting the most intense peak at 1017 cm $$^{-1}$$ - 1 . These powders, intended for thin film applications, bear significance in electronics, optoelectronics, and nanotechnology. A thorough comprehension of their structural and vibrational properties at the microscopic level is paramount for material and device design and optimization.

Abstract:Infrared spectroscopy (IR) is an important tool to investigate the structure of silicalite-1, but the reported spectra vary considerably depending on instrument configuration, sample preparation methods, and pretreatment conditions. This inconsistency makes the investigation of the structure-property correlations difficult. Herein, we investigate the effects of different optical modes (attenuated total reflectance, transmission, diffuse reflectance), different detectors (Mercury Cadmium Telluride and Deuterated Triglycine Sulfate, MCT and DTGS), different sample preparation methods (powder, silicalite-1/KBr wafer, pure silicalite-1 wafer), and different pretreatment temperatures (RT–400 °C) on the spectral shapes of the skeletal and hydroxyl region IR spectra of silicalite-1. Then the appropriate measurement conditions to obtain reproducible and intrinsic spectra were determined. For the skeletal region IR spectra of silicalite-1, the suitable conditions are the transmission mode with a DTGS detector and 1:500 silicalite-1/KBr wafers. For the hydroxyl region IR spectra, an in-situ transmission cell with pure sample wafers and pretreatment at 400 °C is appropriate. Under these suitable measurement conditions, spectral changes can reflect changes in silicalite-1 structure to facilitate the elucidation of the structure-property correlations of silicalite-1 by IR spectroscopy.

Microstructure and luminescent study of electron-trapping thin film

Abstract:The infrared upconversion and optical storage CaS:Eu1Sm thin film with red light output has been developed by electron beam deposition. The film was prepared by doubly rare earth ions doped alkaline earth sulfide CaS. Its phases and microstructure were identified by X-ray diffraction. The surface morphology of the film was observed by scanning electron microscopy. The chemical composition of the film was determined by electron probe microanalysis. The study on the optical properties of the film was presented.

Abstract:Abstract Calcium silicate hydrate (C–S–H) is the main product of cement hydration, which forms the microstructure of cement via the stacking of basic nanocrystals or gel units, and has a substantial influence on the mechanical performance of cement. Tetrahedron chains of silicon oxide form the main nanoscale structure of basic C–S–H units. Evaluation on the nanostructure of these tetrahedron chains facilitates to understand the source of cement strength. This article first introduced the atomic force microscopy-infrared spectroscopy (AFM-IR) technique into evaluating the nanostructure of C–S–H. The nano infrared spectroscopy of stacking C–S–H nanograins and tetrahedron spatial distribution mapping was obtained. The results demonstrate that the relative quantity of tobermorite-like and jennite-like units in C–S–H nanograins can be analyzed by AFM-IR. The stacking between C–S–H particles is facilitated to a large extent by silicate ( SiO 4 2 − {\text{SiO}}_{4}^{2-} ) tetrahedron chains formed of three tetrahedrons bridged by two oxygen atoms ( i.e. , Q 2 chains), and there are Q 2 chains acting as bridges between C–S–H particles. The proportions of different types of Q 2 chains available for facilitating C–S–H particle stacking vary at the nanoscale. AFM-IR spatial mapping demonstrate that the orientations of these Q 2 chains are not evenly distributed. These findings provide experimental information of the stacking C–S–H gaps.

An IR spectroscopy study of kaolinite from Jingdezhen area

Abstract:Kaolinite is an important kind of ceramic and chemical raw material,with its name derived from the Gaoling Mountain of Jingdezhen area in Jiangxi Province.The physical and chemical properties of kaolinite can be affected by the changes of the stacking structure and crystal defects between its unit layers.These variations in structure can be sensitively reflected in Infrared(IR)spectroscopy,and the high frequency range of IR,in particular,can be effectively used to analyze the OH stretching vibration in kaolinite.The sample studied was collected from the Gaoling deposit in the middle of Ehu granite,east of Jingdezhen.The residual kaolin was derived from the hydrolysis and weathering of granite and pegmatite in a hot and humid environment.The structural characteristics of kaolinite from the Gaoling deposit were studied by means of hydrofluoric acid(HF)treatment and infrared(IR)spectroscopy analysis.According to the Stockes' Law,the authors concentrated the frictions of kaolin in <4 μm,and mixed 200 mg of them with 16 mL and 8 mL hydrofluoric acid(12 mol/L)for 5 minutes,respectively.The residual clay JDZ-8HF-1 and JDZ-8HF-2 were studied by IR.In view of the very weak bands ν2 and ν3 of the IR spectrum in the high frequency range of the untreated sample JDZ-8HF(<4 μm),the authors hold that kaolinite from this area is in the range of disorder.This disorder is mainly caused by the decreasing of the angle between c axis and O—H axis within the kaolinite crystal and the increasing of the interlayer cohesive energy.Based on analyzing the characteristics of four bands in the high frequency range,the authors also consider that the structure of kaolinite has a dickite-like displacement of BCBCBC octahedral vacancy.From the low IR frequency range of JDZ-8HF(<4 μm),the characteristic peaks of kao-linite and quartz could be identified,but other phases within the sample could not be found.After 16 mL(12 mol/L)HF treatment,the IR spectrum of JDZ-8HF-1 displays a typical illite IR.From the intensity and pattern of 830 and 744 cm-1 bands,this illite can be determined as the 1Md polytype and possesses disorder structure.The authors failed to find any band related to kaolinite from the IR spectrum of JDZ-8HF-1,and the 3 weak bands 797,779 and 372 cm-1 suggest that there exists a very small amount of quartz.The JDZ-8HF-1 IR spectrum suggests that 16 mL HF could dissolve some quartz and all kaolinite within kaolin from Jingdezhen area.The IR spectrum of JDZ-8HF-2,which was treated by 8 mL HF(12 mol/L),also shows the characteristic bands of 1Md illite and possesses more feature peaks related to quartz than JDZ-8HF-1.This means that less quartz within kaolin was dissolved by 8 mL HF.Based on a comparison between the IR spectra before and after the treatment with hydrofluoric acid,it is concluded that the kaolin from the Gaoling Mountain does not contain the polytypes of dickite and nacrite.The IR experiment results suggest that IR spectra may be insensitive to minor illite mixed in kaolinite.Through HF treatment,however,illite can be identified effectively.A new method is proposed in this paper for identifying the kaolinite-illite mixture.

Abstract:This work presents a study of an unusual synthetic diamond sample, where calcite is the main phase in addition to diamond. Using Raman spectroscopy it can be shown that in addition to diamond carbon forms four different generations: highly ordered graphite-II, lower ordered graphite-I as spandrel between different mineral grains, weakly-ordered carbonaceous material as graphite-III and the hexagonal diamond lonsdaleite (here graphite-IV) as last formation in calcite. Graphite-III can be found mainly in the calcite body. According to the fine dispersion of this carbonaceous material and the arrangement on grain boundaries, we assume that carbon was dissolved in the calcite melt, and that by the activated state of carbon in the calcite melt the formation of diamond is favored near 1760°C, and 6.8 GPa. Lonsdaleite as minor phase may have been formed as an longlived intermediate state under standard conditions between graphite and diamond. Evidence shows that there are two different lonsdaleite phases (possibly hexagonal and monocline) present. The prevailing diamond is characterized by the first-order Raman line at 1333 cm-1. However, there are also present diamonds with the first-order Raman line down to 1310.6 cm-1, corresponding to 13C = 0.511. Significantly there is the strong decrease of the optical damage threshold with increase of the 13C content.
[Study on Mineralogical Characteristics of Quartz and Calcite from Feieling Skarn-Type Pb-Zn Deposit in Southwest Margin of Yunkai Massif]

Abstract:The Feieling Pb-Zn deposit of skarn-type is located the in Southwest margin of Yunkai massif, China. This ore deposit can be divided into wall rock near ore, concealed rock mass, endoskarn, exoskarn and orebody. The Raman and FTIR spectrum are conducted to study the mineralogical characteristics of quartz and calcite from five types of rocks from Feieling skarn-type deposit. The analysis shows that the quartz included in the near ore wall rock, endoskarn and exoskarn, comparing with recrystallized quartz of concealed rock mass, has a tend to change into low symmetry quartz in varying degrees. The crystalinity and order degree of quartz from near ore wall rock to concealed rock mass and to endoskarn are becoming higher, but that of quartz from different exoskarn samples display no regular. The origin or the quartz microstructure changes may be related to the multi-stage evolution of skarn mineralization process. The quartz, included in near ore wall rock, endoskarn and exoskarn, become easier to recrystallize and adjust microstructure under the influence of the multi-stage hydrothermal and temperature effect. In anyone sample, the earlier crystalline calcite, showing subhedral-euhedral crystal, display higher crystalinity and order degree. On the contrary, the later crystalline calcite, showing xenomorphic crystal, display lower crystalinity and order degree. Calcite crystal of exoskarn rock contains some silica impurity, while endoskarn and orebody rock is pure. The purity of calcite crystal may relate to Multi-stage evolution of skarn mineralization process. At the early and late skarn stage, active silica-containing fluid is easier to join into calcite, which is under higher temperature environments. On the contrary, at the late quartz-surfide stage, the later crystalized calcite displays higher purity, which is under lower temperature environments. Therefore, spectral characteristics of quartz and calcite reflect multi-stage evolution of skarn mineralization process.
