Abstract:An empirical method to determine the Brinell hardness for brittle materials was proposed in this paper. Analyses of the experimental data obtained on soda-lime glass and several Ce-TZP ceramics showed that, for a given material, the true Brinell hardness determined with this empirical method is comparable with the true Vickers hardness.

Abstract:Material Brinell hardness values are usually measured by force loading Brinell hardness testers. In this paper, firstly, based on experiment data and theoretical analysis, not only the relationship between Brinell hardness and mechanical properties of the measured material is discussed, but also all measurement uncertainty sources are precisely calibrated. Secondly, force loading characteristics of the Brinell hardness measurement are described and a finite element analysis for the whole Brinell hardness measurement process is introduced. Thirdly, to acquire theoretical measurement uncertainties and the reliable Brinell hardness values of the material under analysis, Monte Carlo method is applied to simulate Brinell hardness experiments. At last, several sets of experiments are carried out on HB-3000C, the Brinell hardness results acquired by this proposed novel mechanics analysis method and practical experiments shown to be consistent, and the validity of the proposed method is attained. © 2011 Published by Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:High pressure and high temperature synthesized MoB2 and WB2 compacts were investigated using X-ray diffraction, energy dispersive spectroscope, scanning electron microscope, Vickers indentation test and ultrasonic measurements. Experiments showed that both MoB2 and WB2 compacts are phase pure and with a grain size of 100-200nm. Vickers indentation test under a large loading force of 49N showed that the Vickers hardness of MoB2 and WB2 are about 21 and 22GPa, respectively. The bulk modulus and shear modulus are about 296GPa, and 190GPa for MoB2 and 349 and 200GPa for WB2 through ultrasonic measurements. Our results indicate that MoB2 and WB2 are both hard materials with a hardness similar to that of tungsten carbide, which is widely used in industry.
Hardness and Fracture Toughness of Brittle Materials: A Density Functional Theory Study

Abstract:The focus of the paper is to study the correlation between hardness and fracture toughness of brittle materials. To this end, density functional theory (DFT) is used to calculate materials parameters such as the surface energies, the unstable stacking fault energies, the Young's modulus, the bulk modulus, the shear moduli, and the Poisson's ratio of crystalline ${\mathrm{B}}_{6}\mathrm{O}$ as well as the surface energies of $c\mathrm{B}\mathrm{N}$ and $3\mathrm{C}\mathrm{Si}\mathrm{C}$. With these calculated materials parameters as well as reported ones, the theoretical fracture toughness of diamond, $c\mathrm{B}\mathrm{N}$, ${\mathrm{B}}_{6}\mathrm{O}$, $3\mathrm{C}\mathrm{Si}\mathrm{C}$, and Si are obtained and compared with experimental hardness. We find that the theoretical fracture toughness, proportional to the product of shear modulus and surface energy, can better characterize hardness of diamond, $c\mathrm{B}\mathrm{N}$, ${\mathrm{B}}_{6}\mathrm{O}$, $3\mathrm{C}\mathrm{Si}\mathrm{C}$, Si, and possibly other brittle materials than shear modulus alone [D. M. Teter, MRS Bull. 23, 22 (1998)]. This finding could be helpful in searching for new hard materials.

Abstract:The reduced elastic modulus Er and indentation hardness HIT of various brittle solids including ceramics, semiconductors, glasses, single crystals, and laser material were evaluated using nanoindentation. Various analysis procedures were compared such as Oliver Pharr and nominal hardness-based methods, which require area function of the indenter, and other methods based on energy, displacement, contact depth, and contact stiffness, which do not require calibration of the indenter. Elastic recovery of the imprint by the Knoop indenter was also utilized to evaluate elastic moduli of brittle solids. Expressions relating HIT/Er and dimensionless nanoindentation variables (e.g., the ratio of elastic work over total work and the ratio of permanent displacement over maximum displacement) are found to be nonlinear rather than linear for brittle solids. The plastic hardness Hp of brittle solids (except traditional glasses) extracted based on Er is found to be proportional to E_r√(H_IT) .

Abstract:Though extensively studied, hardness, defined as the resistance of a material to deformation, still remains a challenging issue for a formal theoretical description due to its inherent mechanical complexity. The widely applied Teter’s empirical correlation between hardness and shear modulus has been considered to be not always valid for a large variety of materials. The main reason is that shear modulus only responses to elastic deformation whereas the hardness links both elastic and permanent plastic properties. We found that the intrinsic correlation between hardness and elasticity of materials correctly predicts Vickers hardness for a wide variety of crystalline materials as well as bulk metallic glasses (BMGs). Our results suggest that, if a material is intrinsically brittle (such as BMGs that fail in the elastic regime), its Vickers hardness linearly correlates with the shear modulus (Hv=0.151G). This correlation also provides a robust theoretical evidence on the famous empirical correlation observed by Teter in 1998. On the other hand, our results demonstrate that the hardness of polycrystalline materials can be correlated with the product of the squared Pugh’s modulus ratio and the shear modulus (Hv=2(k2G)0.585−3 where k=G/B is Pugh’s modulus ratio). Our work combines those aspects that were previously argued strongly, and, most importantly, is capable to correctly predict the hardness of all hard compounds known included in several pervious models.

Abstract:A mathematically transparent and robust experimental method has been developed to estimate the yield stress of brittle materials through the analysis of depth-sensing spherical indentation. Employing Hertzian contact mechanics, an elastically invariant ratio based on the simple equation S3/P=6REr2 , (where S and P are contact stiffness and indentation load, respectively) has been derived that enables more accurate and confident determination of the transition from elastic to inelastic deformation; a transition that the yield stress dictates and represents. Using two diamond spheres with radii of 3.2 and 8.6 μm, the indentation test method and analyses are applied to two vitreous silicates: Corning's HPFS 7980® fused silica and Vitro's Starphire® soda-lime silicate. The estimated yield strengths are 8.15 GPa ± 2.5% for the fused silica and 6.1 GPa ± 3.3% for the soda-lime silicate, and both were independent of indenter radius. Verification of this new experimental method is demonstrated with an as-drawn titanium by showing equivalence of measured yield stress by its spherical indentation and that from uniaxial compression testing. This method will enable easier and more confident estimation of yield stress in brittle materials - a property that historically has been elusive to measure for these materials using common laboratory mechanical test methods.

A New Tablet Brittleness Index.

Abstract:Brittleness is one of the important material properties that influences the success or failure of powder compaction. We have discovered that the reciprocal of diametrical elastic strain at fracture is the most suitable tablet brittleness indices (TBIs) for quantifying brittleness of pharmaceutical tablets. The new strain based TBI is supported by both theoretical considerations and a systematic statistical analysis of friability data. It is sufficiently sensitive to changes in both tablet compositions and compaction parameters. For all tested materials, it correctly shows that tablet brittleness increases with increasing tablet porosity for the same powder. In addition, TBI increases with increasing content of a brittle excipient, lactose monohydrate, in the mixtures with a plastic excipient, microcrystalline cellulose. A probability map for achieving less than 1% tablet friability at various combinations of tablet tensile strength and TBI was constructed. Data from marketed tablets validate this probability map and a TBI value of 150 is recommended as the upper limit for pharmaceutical tablets. This TBI can be calculated from the data routinely obtained during tablet diametrical breaking test, which is commonly performed for assessing tablet mechanical strength. Therefore, it is ready for adoption for quantifying tablet brittleness to guide tablet formulation development since it does not require additional experimental work.
On the Determination of Reduced Young's Modulus and Hardness of Elastoplastic Materials Using a Single Sharp Indenter

Abstract:In this work, we analyzed the theoretical errors of reduced Young's modulus and hardness of materials provided by single sharp indenter algorithms. According to the analysis, two conclusions can be drawn. First, various methods that use only the indentation loading and unloading curves from a single sharp indenter and omit the effect of the strain hardening exponent own the same widths of the theoretical error bands defined here. They are WEb for reduced Young's modulus and WHb for hardness. Second, the upper-bounds, BUE and BUH, and lower-bounds, BLE and BLH, of theoretical errors of the measured reduced Young's modulus and hardness might be different for different methods. These conclusions, on the one hand, are relevant to the evaluation of various established single sharp indenter algorithms. On the other hand, they provide useful information (i.e., to optimize the theoretical error bounds) for correcting an established method and the development of new single sharp indenter algorithms. According to the conclusions, an energy-based method has been devised to determine reduced Young's modulus and hardness of materials from nanoindentation tests using a standard Berkovich or Vickers indenter (equivalent to a 70.3° cone). It has been shown that the present method owns the reasonable theoretical error bounds and can provide stable results in the presence of data errors.
Thermoelastic and mechanical properties in diamond, c‑BN, c‑SiC, TiO 2 , TiO 1.85 and w‑ZnO

Abstract:Thermoelastic and mechanical properties have been obtained in materials with high (diamond, c-SiC, c-BN), medium ( TiO 2 , TiO 1.85 ) and low (w-ZnO) hardness by means of ab initio calculations. Our methodology combines the ab initio results of SIESTA code with discrete element method (DEM) to describe the fracture in brittle materials. This methodology has shown to be efficient in predicting TiO 2 hardness at the normal and high-pressure phases, and to describe low hardness materials such as cassiterite ( SnO 2 ). On the other hand, micro-hardness Vickers models such as Šim ̊ u nek et al. were applied to predict the hardness using structural and electronic parameters of single crystals, showing the importance of the information provided by self-consistent calculations. Our results show that it is possible to extend this methodology to the evaluation of the micro-hardness of a wide range of materials, and consequently, the methodology could be extended more reliably in a systematic searching of hardness in the design of solid solutions.

Prediction on the Theoretical Strength of Diamond, C-Bn, Cu and CeO 2

Abstract:The theoretical (ideal) strength is the upper strength limit that any solid can withstand. Estimation of the theoretical strength of materials is vital for their applications. In the materials science field, the Griffith theory is the most widely used criterion for estimating the theoretical strength of materials, which sets an upper bound strength of ∼E/9. In addition, Frenkel and Orowan–Polanyi’s derivation from the force–displacement relationship using the sinusoidal correlation also gives a similar value of ∼E/10. Recently, with the improved quality of fabricated samples, people have reported the possibility of reaching or exceeding the theoretical strength. In this work, first-principles calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) are used to study the theoretical strength of four representative materials (diamond, c-BN, Cu, and CeO2) under uniaxial tensile loading along the low-index crystallographic directions. The results demonstrate that the theoretical strength of materials exhibits strong anisotropy. It is found that the ideal strength calculated by DFT is larger than the ideal strength predicted by Griffith theory or the approximate value of E/10 in all the four materials along some specific directions. This discrepancy is explained by the analysis of the fracture mechanism. In addition, based on the stability analysis of thermodynamical systems, the strength criterion based on the energy–strain relation was established, which is verified by the DFT results.

Abstract:We investigated controlling parameters of hardness in brittle materials by exploring the correlation between hardness and shear mode cracking. Density functional theory was used to calculate the unstable stacking energies (shear resistance to irreversible deformation) and the surface energies (tension resistance to fracture) for comparison. We found that both the unstable stacking energies and the surface energies had a monotonic relationship with hardness in Ge, Si, 3C-SiC, cBN, and diamond. In particular, both the relationship between hardness and the unstable stacking energy and the relationship between hardness and surface energy are better characterized as power law than linear relationships. Moreover, the surface energy has a better correlation with hardness than the unstable stacking energy. Both the theoretical stress for a crack to form and the stress intensity factor for a crack to propagate, which depend on surface energies, have better correlation with hardness than the stress intensity factor for a crack to emit a dislocation, which depends on unstable stacking energies. The implication of these results for fracture and deformation mechanism during hardness measurement is also discussed.

Abstract:Disparities prevail among the reported hardness and fracture toughness values for hard and brittle materials. A better understanding of the physical nature of hardness and fracture toughness and a standardized technique for reliable measurements of these quantities is urgently needed. We strongly recommend the use of the measured hardness after the bend in the hardness versus load (H−FLoad) curve, when the hardness approaches its asymptotic value. The present work reports a systematic study of hardness and fracture toughness on moissanite (single crystal hexagonal silicon carbide, 6H-SiC) samples. The measurements were performed over a broad load range from 0.49 to 294 N with the direct indentation method. Asymptotic values of Knoop hardness of HK=19 GPa and Vickers hardness of HV=22 GPa were reached at a high load between 50 N and 100 N. A consistent fracture toughness of KIC=1.8 MPa·m1/2 was obtained across the entire load range. Our study presents experimental results for the hardness and fracture toughness of moissanite in the asymptotic-hardness region, and it raises concern regarding the application of moissanite single crystals as anvil material under shear/fracture conditions.
Compositional Dependence of Hardness of (Ce,y)-Tzp/al2o3 Composites

Abstract:Vickers hardness testing was conducted on a series of (Ce,Y)-TZP/Al2O3 composites with different nominal chemical compositions in the applied load range from 4.9 to 49N. The measured hardness was observed to increase with increasing indentation load for all of the composite samples. The load-independent hardnesses of the composites were determined based on the analyses of the indentation data according to the modified proportional specimen resistance model. The compositional dependence of the resultant load-independent hardness was analyzed and it was shown that, if the effect of grain size on the hardness of each phase in the composites is considered properly, the hardness of the composites would meet the conventional rule of mixture.

Abstract:How to describe the brittle failure process for geomaterials is a challenging problem.Up to nowt,here is no harmony among different authors in definition,concept or measurement of brittleness.The concept of brittleness is discussed firstly.Then,a brittleness index describing the brittle change of geomaterials is proposed on the basis of the conclusion of the prior measurement of brittleness,and is verified to describe the brittle change very well.Finally,the binary medium model proposed recently by the authors is used to simulate the stress-strain characteristics of geomaterials under loading conditions;and it is found that the model can duplicate the transference of deformation mode from the strain softening under the low confining pressures to the strain hardening under the high confining pressures;and the brittleness index gradually reduces when the confining pressure is increased.

Abstract:An improved work-of-indentation approach was established for determining hardness from the nanoindentation test by properly considering the effects of indenter-tip-rounding and the changes in the area of free surface on the energy balance relationship during indentation. Nanoindentation data obtained on soda-lime glass were then analyzed to check the validity of this improved approach. It was shown that the hardness yielded with this improved approach is comparable to that determined with the traditional Oliver-Pharr method.

Abstract:Vickers indentation tests were conducted on a commercial soda-lime glass to determine the fracture toughness. The resultant fracture toughness data were then analyzed statistically. It was found that there always exists a somewhat large scatter in the indentation toughness measured at each applied load level. The variability of the measured indentation toughness was modeled by the well-known Weibull statistics. For different sets of indentation toughness data measured at different load levels, the resultant Weibull moduli are nearly identical with each other: indicating that the statistical variability of the indentation toughness is load-independent. Abstract:Journal of Dental Research, Ahead of Print. The ever-increasing usage of ceramic materials in restorative dentistry necessitates a simple and effective method to evaluate flexural strength σF and fracture toughness KC. We propose a novel method to determine these quantities using a bilayer specimen composed of a brittle plate adhesively bonded onto a transparent polycarbonate substrate. When this bilayer structure is placed under spherical indentation, tunneling radial cracks initiate and propagate in the lower surface of the brittle layer. The failure analysis is based on previous theoretical relationships, which correlate σF with the indentation force P and layer thickness d, and KC with P and mean length of radial cracks. This work examines the accuracy and limitations of this approach using a wide range of contemporary dental ceramic materials. The effect of layer thickness, indenter radius, load level, and length and number of radial cracks are carefully examined. The accuracy of the predicted σF and KC is similar to those obtained with other concurrent test methods, such as biaxial flexure and 3-point bending (σF), and bending specimens with crack-initiation flaws (KC). The benefits of the present approach include treatment for small and thin plates, elimination of the need to introduce a precrack, and avoidance of dealing with local material nonlinearity effects for the KC measurements. Finally, the bilayer configuration resembles occlusal loading of a ceramic restoration (brittle layer) bonded to a posterior tooth (compliant substrate).

Abstract:The results of experimental studies on the optimal method of testing materials for hardness depending on physical and mechanical properties are presented. The possibility of evaluating the structural parameters, i.e., the homogeneity coefficients and the variation of the reliability of various devices for obtaining the hardness values of rolled metal products, is considered. The results obtained experimentally have shown the effectiveness of such evaluations. The reliability of the methods for testing the hardness of materials of different plasticities was controlled by determining the degree of dispersion of the obtained results by the LM-hardness method. The influence of the material's physical and mechanical characteristics on the hardness test's accuracy is analyzed. The possibility of choosing the most reliable Brinell, Vickers, or Rockwell method for determining hardness characteristics depending on the level of plastic properties of the sheet material was determined. Following Fisher's theory of small samples in terms of the general population, a statistical assessment of the reliability of measurement methods was performed on a sample of a limited size, which makes it possible to assess the reliability of the results of hardness determination by various methods and determine the optimal variant of testing materials, including high-strength ones, for hardness. According to the methodology for analyzing variance to select the optimal variant for conducting studies of material hardness, the statistical assessment of the reliability of hardness measurements was carried out using a random sample from the general population in its central part in the number of five measurements following each other. The variance check is applied using the Cochrane criterion to determine the uncertain members of the variation series. Based on the research results, the predominant expediency of one or another Brinell, Vickers, or Rockwell method of conducting hardness tests depending on the level of plasticity of materials, especially high-strength ones, given their structural state as assessed by the parameters of hardness characteristics scattering – homogeneity coefficients m and variation v . The availability of this information will make it possible to determine the mechanical characteristics of materials by hardness values more reliably.

Abstract:The indentation size effect (ISE) in Vickers hardness for several ceramic materials was observed in a relatively wider range of applied test load. It was shown that the proportional specimen resistance (PSR) model proposed by Li and Bradt is insufficient for describing the experimental data. By considering the effect of the machining-induced plastically deformed surface on the hardness measurements, the PSR model was modified and the empirical equation proposed originally by Bückle was proven to be more suitable for correlating the measured indentation dimension to the applied test load. ©
