Abstract:The electrochemistry of mixed-valent-containing vanadium-oxide nanotubes (VOx-NTs) is first reported. Using dodecylamine and hexadecylamine as templates, two kinds of VOx-NTs were synthesized and characterized. Both VOx-NTs contain V2O3, VO2 and V2O5 species. Dodecylamine-templated VOx-NTs (C12-VOx-NTs) are much more stable than hexadecylamine-templated VOx-NTs (C16-VOx-NTs). C12-VOx-NTs demonstrate stable redox behavior at ∼−0.2V, which is arising from the electrochemical transfer between V(III) and V(IV), whereas C16-VOx-NTs exhibit unstable and weak redox peaks. In both cases, the reduction reaction of V(V)–V(IV) is never observed. The oxidation peak for V(IV) appeared only after a relatively long time immersion, suggesting that some small molecules such as water intercalate into the layered nanostructures before the electrochemical reaction. The difference may be an origin of the different template-induced the electroactivity of vanadium-oxide species in the nanotube-microenvironment.
Self-assembling Vanadium Oxide Nanotubes by Organic Molecular Templates.

Abstract:Vanadium oxide nanotubes were synthesized as the main product by hydrothermal self-assembling from ammonium metavanadate (NH4VO3) and organic molecules as structure-directing templates. Several kinds of templates including primary amines ((CH2n+1NH2)-H-n), alpha,omega-diamines (H2N[CH2](n)NH2), and quaternary ammonium salt (CTAB) were demonstrated to be appropriate for the formation of nanotubes. The morphologies and structures of the nanotubes were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). The nanotubes were found forming together with the layered structures and the sheetlike structures. On the basis of the growth mechanism of WS2 nanotubes proposed by our group, a possible rolling mechanism was proposed, which might be a suitable general formation mechanism for types of nanotubes from lamellar structures.
Vanadium Pentoxide Nanobelts and Nanorolls: from Controllable Synthesis to Investigation of Their Electrochemical Properties and Photocatalytic Activities

Abstract:Uniform V2O5 center dot xH(2)O nanobelts with high aspect ratios and ultra-long V2O5 center dot xH(2)O nanorolls with novel scroll-like structures were synthesized on a large scale by a simple hydrothermal growth route using NH4VO3 as the raw material in the presence of different acids at 180 degrees C for 24 h. Their morphologies were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). X-ray powder diffraction measurement and thermal gravimetric analysis revealed the composition of nanobelts and nanorolls to be V2O5 center dot 0.9H(2)O and V2O5 center dot 0.6H(2)O, respectively. The possible mechanisms of formation of the nanobelts and nanorolls were schematically elucidated based on the layered structure of vanadium pentoxide. In addition, corresponding anhydrous V2O5 nanostructures with better crystallinity were obtained by calcining the precursors of V2O5 center dot 0.9H(2)O nanobelts or V2O5 center dot 0.6H(2)O nanorolls. Furthermore, we have investigated the electrochemical intercalation properties with Li+ and the photocatalytic activities of the synthesized V2O5 center dot 0.9H(2)O nanobelts, V2O5 center dot 0.6H(2)O nanorolls and their corresponding post-annealing products. It was observed that the morphologies and compositions of the synthesized products had an evident influence on the electrochemical intercalation properties with Li+ and photocatalytic activities.

Abstract:Large-scale gamma-MnOOH and beta-MnO2, nanorods have been synthesized via the hydrothermal process assisted with CTAB at 200 degrees C for 20 h using MnSO4 and NaOH as source and subsequent calcination of gamma-MnOOH nanorods at 300 degrees C for 3 h, respectively. The characterization of X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and selected area electron diffraction (SAED) indicate that the gamma-MnOOH and beta-MnO2 nanorods prepared are monoclinic and tetragonal single crystalline, respectively. Low Temperature Synthesis of Vanadium Pentoxide Nanocrystallines by Sol-Gel Method

Abstract:V2O5 nanocrystalline was prepared by sol-gel method in a system with large amount of water. The structure and morphology of the as-prepared samples were characterized by XRD and TEM. The results show when the pH was <= 3, the crystallinity and crystal size of the as-prepared samples increased with decreasing pH. When the molar ratio of water to vanadium oxyacetyl acetonate (W) was more than 200, the crystal size of the as-prepared sample increased with increasing W. When W was >= 200, and pH was <= 1, V2O5 center dot 1.6H(2)O nanocrystallines were obtained at a low temperature of 50 degrees C. Post-heat-treatment caused the decrease of crystal intensity of V2O5 center dot 1.6H(2)O, and increase of crystal intensity of V2O5. After post-heat-treat at 400 degrees C, pure V2O5 was obtained. The average size of V2O5 nanocrystalline was about 8 nm at 400 degrees C.
One-Pot Synthesis of Highly Dispersed VO2 on g-C3N4 Nanomeshes for Advanced Oxidation

Abstract:Advanced oxidation catalyzed by metal oxides is a promising approach for degrading organic pollutants in wastewater. A critical strategy to enhance the performance of these catalysts is optimizing the dispersion of their active components through innovative synthesis methods. In this study, we report a one-pot synthesis of g-C3N4 nanomeshes supported with highly dispersed VO2 catalysts (V-g-C3N4) for the advanced oxidation of methylene blue (MB). The characterization results reveal that the involvement of VCl3 in the pyrolysis of melamine facilitates the formation of g-C3N4 nanomeshes with abundant amino groups (NH/NH2). The strong interaction between vanadia species and amino groups prevents VO2 particles from agglomerating, resulting in a significantly higher vanadia dispersion than V-g-C3N4-im synthesized via the traditional impregnation method. V-g-C3N4 exhibits a sophisticated microstructure and surface structure, which leads to a rate constant 2.3-fold higher than V-g-C3N4-im in the catalytic degradation of methylene blue using H2O2 as the oxidant. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, trapping experiments, and electron paramagnetic resonance measurements reveal that the rapid adsorption and fast diffusion of MB over g-C3N4 nanomeshes, together with the efficient H2O2 activation into ·OH radicals via the V4+/V5+ redox cycle, synergistically contribute to the superior MB removal efficiency of V-g-C3N4. Moreover, V-g-C3N4 demonstrates no significant decrease in activity even after the fourth cycle, indicating its excellent stability during the pollutant removal process.

Abstract:In this study, monoclinic vanadium dioxide (VO2) nanoparticles were synthesized by one-step rapid hydrothermal treatment of a sol precursor, and the obtained products were examined using various analytical methods. Results indicated that monoclinic VO2 nanoparticles could be obtained using ammonium metavanadate as the precursor at a high concentration of 2.37 M and the shortest duration was only 1 h. X-ray diffraction (XRD) revealed that VO2 presented high crystallinity with a pure monoclinic phase. Phase transition latent heat of VO2 was estimated to be 45.5 J/g. Furthermore, VO2 powders were mostly composed of granules with a size distribution ranging from 20 nm to 100 nm. Monoclinic VO2 nanoparticles were derived from the decomposition of the intermediate (NH4)2V4O9.Monoclinic vanadium dioxide (VO2) nanoparticles can be synthesized by one-step rapid hydrothermal treatment of sol precursor with high concentration.

Abstract:Vanadium oxide nanorods (VONRs) and vanadium oxide nanotubes (VONTs) were fabricated by hydrothermal method with the induction of hydroxyl and carboxyl functionalized carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The functionalized CNTs not only facilitate the dispersion of CNTs but also serve as centers for polymerization in the hydrothermal reaction. The formation of (VONRs) and (VONTs) was observed by field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, x-ray powder diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy tests. Self-assembling nanotubes and nanorods were formed together with the layered structures, but they followed different formation mechanisms. The “Rolling” and “Attaching-Oriented Attachment Growth” mechanisms are proposed to describe the formation of VONRs and VONTs, respectively.

Abstract:YVO4 nanorods/microtubes have been synthesized by a hydrothermal reaction of (NH4)0.5V2O5 nanowires templates with Y3+ at pH=5–6. The nanorods have a diameter of 140–250nm and a length up to 50μm, whereas the microtubes have outer diameters in the range of 1.2–1.6μm and wall thickness of ∼0.5μm. They are composed of self-assembled nanoparticles, which suggests a self-convertible template route to the one-dimensional (1D) nanostructures. The method probably becomes a general approach to preparing 1D nanostructures of rare-earth orthovanadates. The photoluminescence spectrum of the YVO4:Eu nanorods/ microtubes shows the four strong luminescence peaks at 594, 619, 645 and 698nm under the excitation of 316nm.

Abstract:Highly monodisperse VO2 nanocrystals with finely defined sizes and shapes were synthesized for the first time by thermolysis of single source vanadium precursor in high boiling point solvents of oleic acid (OA), oleylamine (OM), and octadence (ODE). The resulting VO2 nanocrystals were characterized by means of powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive X-Ray spectroscopy (EDX), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). It was revealed that the low valence vanadium oxide of VO2 nanocrystals was successfully synthesized via this approach, and the obtained VO2 nanocrystals displayed uniform sizes and narrow size distribution with size variation in range of approximately 4-20 nm under various synthetic conditions. The previously unknown cubic, polyhedral shaped VO2 nanocrystals were achieved as well through modulating the preparative conditions. The solvent composition and precursor concentration are found to have profound effects on the sizes and shapes of the final VO2 nanocrystals. It is expected that the obtained VO2 nanocrystals with finely controlled sizes and shapes may be valuable candidates for studying and realizing the new size- and shape- dependent optical and electrical properties of VO2 materials in the nanoscale realm, and the novel synthetic method is potentially useful for the controlled synthesis of high quality doped VO2 and other vanadium oxides nanocrystals.
Strong reduction of V4+ amount in vanadium oxide/hexadecylamine nanotubes by doping with Co2+ and Ni2+ ions: EPR and magnetic studies

Abstract:In this work we present a complete characterization and magnetic study of vanadium oxide/hexadecylamine nanotubes (VOx/Hexa NT's) doped with Co2+ and Ni2+ ions. The morphology of the NT's has been characterized by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) while the metallic elements have been quantified by Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis (INAA) technique. The static and dynamic magnetic properties were studied collecting data of magnetization as a function of magnetic field and temperature and by Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR). We observed that the incorporation of metallic ions (Co2+, S=3/2 and Ni2+, S=1) decrease notably the amount of V4+ ions in the system, from 14-16% (non-doped case) to 2-4%, with respect to the total vanadium atoms into the tubular nanostructure, improving considerably their potential technological applications as Li-ion batteries cathodes.

Abstract:We have developed a method for the synthesis of metal oxide nanocrystals with controllable shape and size, which is based on the direct thermal decomposition of metal nitrates in octadecylamine. Mn3O4 nanoparticles and nanorods with different lengths were synthesized by using manganese nitrate as the decomposition material. Other metal oxide nanocrystals such as NiO, ZnO, CeO2, CoO, and Co3O4 were also prepared by this method. These nanocrystals were then assembled into 3D colloidal spheres by a surfactant-assisted self-assembly process. Subsequently, calcination was carried out to remove the surfactants to obtain mesoporous metal oxides, which show large pores, good crystallization, thermally stable pore mesostructures, and potential applications in various fields, especially in catalysis and lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:The morphology of nanostructures is a vital parameter to consider in components comprised of materials exhibiting specific functionalities. The number of process steps and the need for high temperatures can often be a limiting factor when targeting a specific morphology. Here, we demonstrate a repeatable synthesis of different morphologies of a highly crystalline monoclinic phase of vanadium dioxide (VO2(M)) using a one-step hydrothermal method. By adjusting the synthesis parameters, such as pH, temperature, and reducing agent concentration in the precursor, VO2 nanostructures with high uniformity and crystallinity are achieved. Some of these morphologies were obtained via the choice of the reducing agent that allowed us to skip the annealing step. Our results indicate that the morphologies of the nanostructures are very sensitive to the hydrazine hydrate (N2H4.H2O) concentration. Another reducing agent, dodecylamine, was used to achieve well-organized and high-quality VO2(M) nanotubes. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) experiments revealed that all samples display the monoclinic-to-tetragonal structural transition (MTST) regardless of the morphology, albeit at different temperatures that can be interpreted as the variations in overheating and undercooling limits. VO2(M) structures with a higher surface to volume ratio exhibit a higher overheating limit than those with low ratios.

Abstract:Hydrous vanadium oxides (denoted hereafter as VOx⋅yH2O ) were prepared by anodic deposition from an aqueous solution containing VOSO4 and H2O2 . X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic analyses demonstrated that the valence of vanadium in the deposits was mixed pentavalent and tetravalent. Growth of vanadium oxide nanowires to unique sea-urchin-like structure from the as-deposited oxides can be induced by postdeposition annealing in air at 400°C with time ≥4h . The success in growing one-dimensional (1D) vanadium oxide nanowires strongly depends on the deposition variables such as the V5+/V4+ ratio (adjusted by H2O2 addition) in the VOSO4 solution and the applied current density during anodic deposition. From the transmission electron microscopic and selected area electron diffraction analyses, nanowires show single-crystalline structures of V2O5 , α-V2O5 , and V6O13 . This thermal-induced growth of 1D vanadium oxide nanowires is attributable to the extrusion of V2O5 , α-V2O5 , and V6O13 single crystals originating from the thermal expansion of VOx⋅yH2O .

Atomically Dispersed Vanadium Sites Anchored on N-Doped Porous Carbon for the Efficient Oxidative Coupling of Amines to Imines

Abstract:Single-atom catalysts effectively integrate the respective advantages of homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts and are a pioneering research frontier in catalysis by virtue of their maximized utility of metal atoms and distinct atomic configuration. However, development of such catalysts is still in the early stages. Herein, atomically dispersed vanadium (V) sites that are coordinated by N atoms and inlaid within N-incorporated porous carbon networks were prepared through a top-down strategy by annealing a V-containing metal–organic framework, NH2-MIL-101(V), followed by acid etching. The resulting V–N–C-600 catalyst exhibits unexpected catalytic reactivity, selectivity, and robust stability for the direct aerobic oxidation of benzylamine to generate N-benzylidene benzylamine with molecular oxygen under mild conditions. The turnover frequency reaches 53.9 h–1, which is much superior to those achieved over the commercial V2O5 and state-of-the-art non-noble metal heterogeneous catalysts reported in the literature. Kinetic analysis reveals a low activation energy barrier (37 kJ mol–1) for the benzylamine oxidation and indicates that a carbocationic intermediate is involved in the reaction mechanism. The synergistic effect between the isolated V single-atomic sites and N-doped hierarchically porous carbon network boosts the performance of V–N–C-600. Abstract:The fabrication of sponge-like vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) nanostructures using vertically aligned carbon nanotubes (VACNTs) as a template is presented. The VACNTs were grown on silicon substrates by chemical vapor deposition using the Fe/Al bilayer catalyst approach. The V2O5 nanostructures were obtained from the thermal oxidation of metallic vanadium deposited on the VACNTs. Different oxidation temperatures and vanadium thicknesses were used to study the influence of these parameters on the stability of the carbon template and the formation of the V2O5 nanostructures. The morphology of the samples was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, and the structural characterization was performed by Raman, energy-dispersive X-ray, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies. Due to the catalytic properties of V2O5 in the decomposition of carbonaceous materials, it was possible to obtain supported sponge-like structures based on V2O5/CNT composites, in which the CNTs exhibit an increase in their graphitization. The VACNTs can be removed or preserved by modulating the thermal oxidation process and the vanadium thickness.

Abstract:In this paper, CoO, Co3O4, Ni(OH)2, and Mg(OH)2 nanotubes were synthesized by solvothermal treatment of corresponding colloidal hydroxide. These nanotubes were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), selected area electron diffraction (SAED), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). According to the time-dependent morphology evolution, it is likely that the growth is governed by a solution−solid process. Advantages of this method include that it is a simple and general process without the need for a catalyst, surfactant, or template, which makes it low cost, and that the raw materials are readily available. Abstract:In this work, protonated titanate nanotubes was performed as a potential useful support and different vanadium precursors (NH4VO3 and VOSO4) were used to synthesize deNOx catalysts. The results showed that VOSO4 exhibited better synergistic effect with titanate nanotubes than NH4VO3, which was caused by the ion-exchange reaction. Then high loading content of vanadium, uniformly active phase distribution, better dispersion of vanadium, more acid sites, better V5+/V4+ redox cycles and superior oxygen mobility were achieved. Besides, VOSO4-based titanate nanotubes catalysts also showed enhanced alkaline resistance than particles (P25) based catalysts. It was strongly associated with its abundant acid sites, large surface area, flexible redox cycles and oxygen transfer ability. For the loading on protonated titanate nanotubes, active metal with cation groups was better precursors than anion ones. V2O5/TNTs catalyst was a promising substitute for the commercial vanadium catalysts and the work conducted herein provided a useful idea to design uniformly active phase loaded catalyst.
