Abstract:Surface texture can produce cavitation-load-carrying effect under hydrodynamic lubrication, therefore a proper cavitation boundary condition (CBC) is needed in the lubrication analysis of surface texture. The Reynolds' CBC, which was generally used in the past, is not mass conservation. For the mass conservation JFO (Jakobsson-Floberg-Olsson) CBC, it is not entirely reasonable to accept that the pressure of cavitation zone remains constant. In this paper, three-dimensional finite element models of oil film for partially textured journal bearing are established using the ADINA-CFD module, applying a phase change CBC on the fluid domain. Vapor and liquid coexist in the cavitation region, the vapor phase volume fraction is related to the negative pressure. The effects of partial texture location and dimple depth on load carying capacity (LCC), are investigated. The results of simulation show that texture located at lubricant inlet area can improve the performance of bearing, and the effect of shallow dimples on LCC is superior to the deep ones. However, the bearing performance will be reduced, if the texture is located at the maximal pressure area. When the texture is located at the lubricant outlet area, there will be two different situations: the part of the texture located within the oil film divergent area can improve the LCC; while the part that is beyond the divergent region will make the LCC decrease, and the more textured area in the convergent region is, the greater is the decline of the LCC.
