Abstract:In this paper, we give discreteness criteria of subgroups of the special linear group on ℚ p or ℂ p in two and higher dimensions. Jørgensen’s inequality gives a necessary condition for a non-elementary group of Möbius transformations to be discrete. We give a version of Jørgensen’s inequality for SL( m ,ℂ p ).

Abstract:Radical subgroups play an important role in both finite group theory and representation theory. This is the first of a series of papers of ours in classifying radical $p$-subgroups of finite reductive groups and in verifying the inductive blockwise Alperin weight condition for them, contributing to the program of proving the Alperin weight conjecture by verifying its inductive condition for finite simple groups. In this paper we present a uniform method of classifying radical subgroups of finite reductive groups. As applications, we investigate the inductive blockwise Alperin weight condition for classical groups, as well as groups of type $\bf F_4$.

Abstract:The main results of this paper are as follows: THEOREM 1. If G is a finite group with a strongly p-embedded subgroup then G has a p-block of defect zero. The theorem solves a problem of Alperin. THEOREM 5. Let G be a finite group and D, a p-subgroup of G such that NG(D)ID has a strongly p-embedded subgroup, then D is a defect group for some p-block of G if and only if there exists a p′-element x in G such that D is a Sylow p-subgroup of C(G)(x). COROLLARY 6. If G is a finite group with am abelian Sylow p-subgroup then every strong p-subgroup of G is a defect group for some p-block of G. In particular every maximal Sylow p-intersection of G is a defect group.
On the $p$-ranks of class groups of certain Galois extensions

Abstract:Let $p$ be an odd prime, let $N$ be a prime with $N \equiv 1 \pmod{p}$, and let $\zeta_p$ be a primitive $p$-th root of unity. We study the $p$-rank of the class group of $\mathbb{Q}(\zeta_p, N^{1/p})$ using Galois cohomological methods and obtain an exact formula for the $p$-rank in terms of the dimensions of certain Selmer groups. Using our formula, we provide a numerical criterion to establish upper and lower bounds for the $p$-rank, analogous to the numerical criteria provided by F.~Calegari--M.~Emerton and K.~Schaefer--E.~Stubley for the $p$-ranks of the class group of $\mathbb{Q}(N^{1/p})$. In the case $p=3$, we use Redei matrices to provide a numerical criterion to exactly calculate the $3$-rank, and also study the distribution of the $3$-ranks as $N$ varies through primes which are $4,7 \pmod{9}$.

Abstract:Let $p$ and $q$ be different primes and let $G$ be a finite $q$-solvable group. We prove that $\mathrm{Irr}_{p'}(G)\subseteq \mathrm{Irr}_{q'}(G)$ if and only if $\mathbf{N}_G(P)\subseteq \mathbf{N}_G(Q)$ and $\mathbf{C}_{Q'}(P)=1$ for some $P\in\mathrm{Syl}_p(G)$ and $Q\in\mathrm{Syl}_q(G)$. Further, if $B$ is a $q$-block of $G$ and $p$ does not divide the degree of any character in $\mathrm{Irr}(B)$ then we prove that a Sylow $p$-subgroup of $G$ is normalized by a defect group of $B$. This removes the $p$-solvability condition of two theorems of G. Navarro and T. R. Wolf.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate subgroups of a given finite group which are not contained in any intersection of two different conjugates of another subgroup. Then we are able to provide a characterization of Sylow p-subgroups which are T.I. sets and some further properties of defect groups of a conjugacy class appearing in a primitive central idempotent.

Abstract:For a subgroup $S$ of a group $G$, let $I_G(S)$ denote the set of commutators $[g,s]=g^{-1}g^s$, where $g\in G$ and $s\in S$, so that $[G,S]$ is the subgroup generated by $I_G(S)$. We prove that if $G$ is a $p$-soluble finite group with a Sylow $p$-subgroup $P$ such that any subgroup generated by a subset of $I_G(P)$ is $r$-generated, then $[G,P]$ has $r$-bounded rank. We produce examples showing that such a result does not hold without the assumption of $p$-solubility. Instead, we prove that if a finite group $G$ has a Sylow $p$-subgroup $P$ such that (a) any subgroup generated by a subset of $I_G(P)$ is $r$-generated, and (b) for any $x\in I_G(P)$, any subgroup generated by a subset of $I_G(x)$ is $r$-generated, then $[G,P]$ has $r$-bounded rank. We also prove that if $G$ is a finite group such that for every prime $p$ dividing $|G|$ for any Sylow $p$-subgroup $P$, any subgroup generated by a subset of $I_G(P)$ can be generated by $r$ elements, then the derived subgroup $G'$ has $r$-bounded rank. As an important tool in the proofs, we prove the following result, which is also of independent interest: if a finite group $G$ admits a group of coprime automorphisms $A$ such that any subgroup generated by a subset of $I_G(A)$ is $r$-generated, then the rank of $[G,A]$ is $r$-bounded.

Abstract:Let π be a proper subset of the set of all prime numbers. Denote by r the least prime number not in π, and put m = r , if r = 2, 3, and m = r − 1 if r ≥ 5. We look at the conjecture that a conjugacy class D in a finite group G generates a π-subgroup in G (or, equivalently, is contained in the π-radical) iff any m elements from D generate a π-group. Previously, this conjecture was confirmed for finite groups whose every non-Abelian composition factor is isomorphic to a sporadic, alternating, linear or unitary simple group. Now it is confirmed for groups the list of composition factors of which is added up by exceptional groups of Lie type 2 B 2 ( q ), 2 G 2 ( q ), G 2 ( q ), and 3 D 4 ( q ).

Abstract:We first determine in this paper the structure of the generalized Fitting subgroup F * ( G ) of the finite groups G all of whose defect groups (of blocks) are conjugate under the automorphism group Aut( G ) to either a Sylow p -subgroup or a fixed p -subgroup of G . Then we prove that if a finite group L acts transitively on the set of its proper Sylow p -intersections, then either L/O p ( L ) has a T.I. Sylow p -subgroup or p = 2 and the normal closure of a Sylow 2-subgroup of L/O 2 ( L ) is 2-nilpotent with completely descripted structure. This solves a long-open problem. We also obtain some generalizations of the classic results by Isaacs and Passman on half-transitivity.

Abstract:Let p be a prime. In this paper we provide a lower bound for the number of almost p-rational characters of degree coprime to p in the principal p-block of a finite group of order divisible by p. We further describe the p-local structure of the groups for which the above-mentioned bound is sharp.

Abstract:There are several results in the literature concerning $p$-groups $G$ with a maximal elementary abelian normal subgroup of rank $k$ due to Thompson, Mann and others. Following an idea of Sambale we obtain bounds for the number of generators etc. of a $2$-group $G$ in terms of $k$, which were previously known only for $p>2$. We also prove a theorem that is new even for odd primes. Namely, we show that if $G$ has a maximal elementary abelian normal subgroup of rank $k$, then for any abelian subgroup $A$ the Frattini subgroup $\Phi(A)$ can be generated by $2k$ elements ($3k$ when $p=2$). The proof of this rests upon the following result of independent interest: If $V$ is an $n$-dimensional vector space, then any commutative subalgebra of End$(V)$ contains a zero algebra of codimension at most $n$.

Abstract:Slattery has generalized Brauer's theory of p-blocks of finite groups to pi-blocks of pi-separable groups where pi is a set of primes. In this setting we show that the order of a defect group of a pi-block B is bounded in terms of the number of irreducible characters in B. This is a variant of Brauer's Problem 21 and generalizes Külshammer's corresponding theorem for p-blocks of p-solvable groups. At the same time, our result generalizes Landau's classical theorem on the number of conjugacy classes of an arbitrary finite group. The proof relies on the classification of finite simple groups.

Abstract:Let p,q be different primes and suppose that the principal p- and the principal q-block of a finite group have only one irreducible complex character in common, namely the trivial one. We conjecture that this condition implies the existence of a nilpotent Hall {p,q}-subgroup and prove that a minimal counter-example must be an almost simple group where pq divides the order of its simple nonabelian normal subgroup. As an immediate consequence we obtain that the conjecture holds true for p-solvable or q-solvable groups. Furthermore, we prove the conjecture in case 2∈{p,q} using the classification theorem of finite simple groups. Finally, we consider the situation that the intersection of an arbitrary p-block with an arbitrary q-block contains only one irreducible character.

Abstract:We study the fundamental group of the $p$-subgroup complex of a finite group $G$. We show first that $\pi_1(A_3(A_{10}))$ is not a free group (here $A_{10}$ is the alternating group on $10$ letters). This is the first concrete example in the literature of a $p$-subgroup complex with non-free fundamental group. We prove that, modulo a well-known conjecture of M. Aschbacher, $\pi_1(A_p(G)) = \pi_1(A_p(S_G)) * F$, where $F$ is a free group and $\pi_1(A_p(S_G))$ is free if $S_G$ is not almost simple. Here $S_G = \Omega_1(G)/O_{p'}(\Omega_1(G))$. This result essentially reduces the study of the fundamental group of $p$-subgroup complexes to the almost simple case. We also exhibit various families of almost simple groups whose $p$-subgroup complexes have free fundamental group.
