Abstract:Let G be a symplectic or orthogonal group defined over a finite field with odd characteristic and let D ≤ G be a Sylow 2-subgroup. In this paper, we classify the essential 2-subgroups and determine the essential 2-rank of the Frobenius category F D ( G ). Together with the results of An-Dietrich and Cao–An–Zeng, this completes the work of essential subgroups and essential ranks of classical groups.

Abstract:We study the dependence of the structure of finite p-soluble groups on the indices of normalizers of Sylow subgroups. We obtain estimates for the p-length of these groups, and for small values of indices we find the nilpotent length of a soluble group.

Abstract:Abstract Denote by νp⁢(G){\nu_{p}(G)} the number of Sylow p-subgroups of G. It is not difficult to see that νp⁢(H)⩽νp⁢(G){\nu_{p}(H)\leqslant\nu_{p}(G)} for H⩽G{H\leqslant G}, however νp⁢(H){\nu_{p}(H)} does not divide νp⁢(G){\nu_{p}(G)} in general. In this paper we reduce the question whether νp⁢(H){\nu_{p}(H)} divides νp⁢(G){\nu_{p}(G)} for every H⩽G{H\leqslant G} to almost simple groups. This result substantially generalizes the previous result by G. Navarro and also provides an alternative proof of Navarro’s theorem.

Abstract:One of the central tools in the classification of simple algebraic groups is the distinction between semisimple subgroups and unipotent subgroups. It is not a priori clear how to make this distinction for torsion-free subgroups of a group of finite Morley rank. We exploit the ``graded'' notion of 0-unipotence to develop a Sylow theory for torsion-free subgroups of a solvable group of finite Morley rank. This Sylow theory provides a robust alternative to the usual theory of Carter subgroups, and will be used in the analysis of intersections of Borel subgroups in minimal simple groups.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the finite {p,q}-soluble groups with given indices of normalizers of Sylow subgroups belonging to a formation in terms of the property of normalizers of Sylow subgroups. A theorem for the group is obtained, and some corollarys are given.

Abstract:In this paper, we determine the finite groups with a Sylow $r$-subgroup contained in a unique maximal subgroup. The proof involves a reduction to almost simple groups, and our main theorem extends earlier work of Aschbacher in the special case $r=2$. Several applications are presented. This includes some new results on weakly subnormal subgroups of finite groups, which can be used to study variations of the Baer-Suzuki theorem.

Abstract:We introduce Sylow subgroups and $0$-groups to the theory of complex algebraic supergroups, which mimic Sylow subgroups and $p$-groups in the theory of finite groups. We prove that Sylow subgroups are always $0$-groups, and show that they are unique up to conjugacy. Further, we give an explicit classification of $0$-groups which will be very useful for future applications. Finally, we prove an analogue of Sylow's third theorem on the number of Sylow subgroups of a supergroup.

Abstract:G. Navarro raised the question whether the ordinary character table X(G) of a finite group G determines the Sylow numbers of G. In this note we show that this is the case when G is nilpotent-by-nilpotent, quasinilpotent, Frobenius group or a 2-Frobenius group. In particular Sylow numbers of supersoluble groups are determined by their ordinary character table. If G and H are finite groups with isomorphic integral group rings then it is well known that X(G) and X(H) coincide. In the last part of this note we show that the integral group ring ZG determines the number of Sylow q-subgroups provided G is q-contrained. It follows that ZG determines the Sylow numbers of G provided G is soluble.

Abstract:For subsets $X,Y$ of a finite group $G$, let $Pr(X,Y)$ denote the probability that two random elements $x\in X$ and $y\in Y$ commute. Obviously, a finite group $G$ is nilpotent if and only if $Pr(P,Q)=1$ whenever $P$ and $Q$ are Sylow subgroups of $G$ of coprime orders. Suppose that $G$ is a finite group in which for any distinct primes $p,q\in\pi(G)$ there is a Sylow $p$-subgroup $P$ and a Sylow $q$-subgroup $Q$ of $G$ such that $Pr(P,Q) \ge \epsilon$. We show that $F_2(G)$ has $\epsilon$-bounded index in $G$. If $G$ is a finite soluble group in which for any prime $p\in\pi(G)$ there is a Sylow $p$-subgroup $P$ and a Hall $p'$-subgroup $H$ such that $Pr(P,H)\ge \epsilon$, then $F(G)$ has $\epsilon$-bounded index in $G$. Moreover, we establish criteria for nilpotency and solubility of $G$ such as: If for any primes $p,q\in\pi(G)$ the group $G$ has a Sylow $p$-subgroup $P$ and a Sylow $q$-subgroup $Q$ with $Pr(P,Q)>2/3$, then $G$ is nilpotent. If for any primes $p,q\in\pi(G)$ the group $G$ has a Sylow $p$-subgroup $P$ and a Sylow $q$-subgroup $Q$ with $Pr(P,Q)>2/5$, then $G$ is soluble.

Abstract:We prove that a finite group $G$ has a normal Sylow $p$-subgroup $P$ if, and only if, every irreducible character of $G$ appearing in the permutation character $({\bf 1}_P)^G$ with multiplicity coprime to $p$ has degree coprime to $p$. This confirms a prediction by Malle and Navarro from 2012. Our proof of the above result depends on a reduction to simple groups and ultimately on a combinatorial analysis of the properties of Sylow branching coefficients for symmetric groups.

Abstract:We prove the conjugacy of Sylow $p$-subgroups of linear pseudofinite groups under the assumption of the existence of a finite Sylow $p$-subgroup. We also give an example of a linear pseudofinite group with non-conjugate Sylow $2$-subgroups.

Abstract:Consider the Macdonald group $G(\alpha,\beta)=\langle A,B\,|\, A^{[A,B]}=A^\alpha,\, B^{[B,A]}=B^\beta\rangle$, where $\alpha$ and $\beta$ are integers different from one. We fill a gap in Macdonald's original proof that $G(\alpha,\beta)$ is nilpotent, and find the order and nilpotency class of each Sylow subgroup of $G(\alpha,\beta)$.

Abstract:The spectrum of a group is the set of orders of its elements. Finite groups with the same spectra as the direct squares of the finite simple groups with abelian Sylow 2-subgroups are considered. It is proved that the direct square $J_1\times J_1$ of the sporadic Janko group $J_1$ and the direct squares ${^2}G_2(q)\times{^2}G_2(q)$ of the simple small Ree groups ${^2}G_2(q)$ are uniquely characterized by their spectra in the class of finite groups, while for the direct square $PSL_2(q)\times PSL_2(q)$ of a 2-dimensional simple linear group $PSL_2(q)$, there are always infinitely many groups (even solvable groups) with the same spectra.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove the following theorem: Let p be a prime number, P a Sylow p-subgroup of a group G and π = π(G) \ {p}. If P is seminormal in G, then the following statements hold: 1) G is a p-soluble group and P′ ≤ O p (G); 2) l p (G) ≤ 2 and l π (G) ≤ 2; 3) if a π-Hall subgroup of G is q-supersoluble for some q ∈ π, then G is q-supersoluble.

Abstract:For a subgroup $S$ of a group $G$, let $I_G(S)$ denote the set of commutators $[g,s]=g^{-1}g^s$, where $g\in G$ and $s\in S$, so that $[G,S]$ is the subgroup generated by $I_G(S)$. We prove that if $G$ is a $p$-soluble finite group with a Sylow $p$-subgroup $P$ such that any subgroup generated by a subset of $I_G(P)$ is $r$-generated, then $[G,P]$ has $r$-bounded rank. We produce examples showing that such a result does not hold without the assumption of $p$-solubility. Instead, we prove that if a finite group $G$ has a Sylow $p$-subgroup $P$ such that (a) any subgroup generated by a subset of $I_G(P)$ is $r$-generated, and (b) for any $x\in I_G(P)$, any subgroup generated by a subset of $I_G(x)$ is $r$-generated, then $[G,P]$ has $r$-bounded rank. We also prove that if $G$ is a finite group such that for every prime $p$ dividing $|G|$ for any Sylow $p$-subgroup $P$, any subgroup generated by a subset of $I_G(P)$ can be generated by $r$ elements, then the derived subgroup $G'$ has $r$-bounded rank. As an important tool in the proofs, we prove the following result, which is also of independent interest: if a finite group $G$ admits a group of coprime automorphisms $A$ such that any subgroup generated by a subset of $I_G(A)$ is $r$-generated, then the rank of $[G,A]$ is $r$-bounded.
