Abstract:We consider a purely algebraic result. Then given a circle or cyclic group of prime order action on a manifold, we will use it to estimate the lower bound of the number of fixed points. We also give an obstruction to the existence of $\mathbb{Z}_p$ action on manifolds with isolated fixed points when $p$ is a prime.

Abstract:For a subgroup $S$ of a group $G$, let $I_G(S)$ denote the set of commutators $[g,s]=g^{-1}g^s$, where $g\in G$ and $s\in S$, so that $[G,S]$ is the subgroup generated by $I_G(S)$. We prove that if $G$ is a $p$-soluble finite group with a Sylow $p$-subgroup $P$ such that any subgroup generated by a subset of $I_G(P)$ is $r$-generated, then $[G,P]$ has $r$-bounded rank. We produce examples showing that such a result does not hold without the assumption of $p$-solubility. Instead, we prove that if a finite group $G$ has a Sylow $p$-subgroup $P$ such that (a) any subgroup generated by a subset of $I_G(P)$ is $r$-generated, and (b) for any $x\in I_G(P)$, any subgroup generated by a subset of $I_G(x)$ is $r$-generated, then $[G,P]$ has $r$-bounded rank. We also prove that if $G$ is a finite group such that for every prime $p$ dividing $|G|$ for any Sylow $p$-subgroup $P$, any subgroup generated by a subset of $I_G(P)$ can be generated by $r$ elements, then the derived subgroup $G'$ has $r$-bounded rank. As an important tool in the proofs, we prove the following result, which is also of independent interest: if a finite group $G$ admits a group of coprime automorphisms $A$ such that any subgroup generated by a subset of $I_G(A)$ is $r$-generated, then the rank of $[G,A]$ is $r$-bounded.

Besides, we show that the p-rank (resp., p-length) of a p-solvable group which is of exact p-deficiency class r(> 0) is bounded by r (resp., a function of r).

Abstract:Let $p$ be an odd prime, let $N$ be a prime with $N \equiv 1 \pmod{p}$, and let $\zeta_p$ be a primitive $p$-th root of unity. We study the $p$-rank of the class group of $\mathbb{Q}(\zeta_p, N^{1/p})$ using Galois cohomological methods and obtain an exact formula for the $p$-rank in terms of the dimensions of certain Selmer groups. Using our formula, we provide a numerical criterion to establish upper and lower bounds for the $p$-rank, analogous to the numerical criteria provided by F.~Calegari--M.~Emerton and K.~Schaefer--E.~Stubley for the $p$-ranks of the class group of $\mathbb{Q}(N^{1/p})$. In the case $p=3$, we use Redei matrices to provide a numerical criterion to exactly calculate the $3$-rank, and also study the distribution of the $3$-ranks as $N$ varies through primes which are $4,7 \pmod{9}$.

Abstract:We study the dependence of the structure of finite p-soluble groups on the indices of normalizers of Sylow subgroups. We obtain estimates for the p-length of these groups, and for small values of indices we find the nilpotent length of a soluble group.

Abstract:In the early 1990s, Puig created his theory of fusion systems as a tool in modular representation theory. Later, Broto, Levi and Oliver used this theory to provide a formal setting for and prove results about the p -completed classifying spaces of finite groups. Aschbacher also started a program to establish a local theory of fusion systems similar to the local theory of finite groups. In this paper, we define the notion of ranks for fusion systems which imitates the notion of p -local ranks for finite groups and prove some results about weakly normal subsystems and factor systems.

Abstract:The classification of the finite primitive permutation groups of rank $3$ was completed in the 1980s and this landmark achievement has found a wide range of applications. In the general transitive setting, a classical result of Higman shows that every finite imprimitive rank $3$ permutation group $G$ has a unique non-trivial block system $\mathcal{B}$ and this provides a natural way to partition the analysis of these groups. Indeed, the induced permutation group $G^{\mathcal{B}}$ is $2$-transitive and one can also show that the action induced on each block in $\mathcal{B}$ is also $2$-transitive (and so both induced groups are either affine or almost simple). In this paper, we make progress towards a classification of the rank $3$ imprimitive groups by studying the case where the induced action of $G$ on a block in $\mathcal{B}$ is of affine type. Our main theorem divides these rank $3$ groups into four classes, which are defined in terms of the kernel of the action of $G$ on $\mathcal{B}$. In particular, we completely determine the rank $3$ semiprimitive groups for which $G^{\mathcal{B}}$ is almost simple, extending recent work of Baykalov, Devillers and Praeger. We also prove that if $G$ is rank $3$ semiprimitive and $G^{\mathcal{B}}$ is affine, then $G$ has a regular normal subgroup which is a special $p$-group for some prime $p$.

Abstract:This is one of a series of papers which aims towards a classification of imprimitive affine groups of rank $3$. In this paper, a complete classification is given of such groups of characteristic $p$ such that the point stabilizer is not $p$-local, which shows that such groups are very rare, namely, the two non-isomorphic groups of the form $2^4{:}\mathrm{GL}_3(2)$ with a unique minimal normal subgroup are the only examples.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the properties of totally local formations of finite groups. We will prove that if F is a non-nilpotent totally local formation, then F/F-infinity(0) is a complemented lattice if and only if it is Boolean lattice, where F-o is the local nilpotent subformation of F. Thus, the interesting problem proposed by A.N. Skiba in his monograph, "Algebra of Formations" can be answered positively.

Abstract:There are several results in the literature concerning $p$-groups $G$ with a maximal elementary abelian normal subgroup of rank $k$ due to Thompson, Mann and others. Following an idea of Sambale we obtain bounds for the number of generators etc. of a $2$-group $G$ in terms of $k$, which were previously known only for $p>2$. We also prove a theorem that is new even for odd primes. Namely, we show that if $G$ has a maximal elementary abelian normal subgroup of rank $k$, then for any abelian subgroup $A$ the Frattini subgroup $\Phi(A)$ can be generated by $2k$ elements ($3k$ when $p=2$). The proof of this rests upon the following result of independent interest: If $V$ is an $n$-dimensional vector space, then any commutative subalgebra of End$(V)$ contains a zero algebra of codimension at most $n$.

Abstract:We study totally disconnected locally compact second countable (t.d.l.c.s.c.) groups that contain a compact open subgroup with finite rank. We show such groups that additionally admit a pro-$\pi$ compact open subgroup for some finite set of primes $\pi$ are virtually an extension of a finite direct product of topologically simple groups by an elementary group. This result, in particular, applies to l.c.s.c. $p$-adic Lie groups. We go on to prove a decomposition result for all t.d.l.c.s.c. groups containing a compact open subgroup with finite rank. In the course of proving these theorems, we demonstrate independently interesting structure results for t.d.l.c.s.c. groups with a compact open pro-nilpotent subgroup and for topologically simple l.c.s.c. $p$-adic Lie groups.

Abstract:In the first part of this work we have established an efficient method to obtain a topological classification of locally discrete, finitely generated, virtually free subgroups of real-analytic circle diffeomorphisms. In this second part we describe several consequences, among which the solution (within this setting) to an old conjecture by P. R. Dippolito [Ann. Math. 107 (1978), 403-453] that actions with invariant Cantor sets must be semi-conjugate to piecewise linear actions. In addition, we exhibit examples of locally discrete, minimal actions which are not of Fuchsian type.
