Abstract:Nitric oxide (NO) emitted from the combustion of fossil fuels has drawn global concern, and the oxidation of NO contributes greatly to the DeNOx process. Herein, single-crystal γ-MnO2 catalysts with well-defined hollow-sphere-, sea-urchin-, and flower-like morphologies (γ-MnO2-HS, γ-MnO2-SU, and γ-MnO2-F) were rationally designed and synthesized via an environmental-friendly template-free hydrothermal strategy. The physicochemical properties of the prepared materials were characterized by XRD, FE-SEM, TEM, BET, XPS, H2-TPR, O2/NO-TPD and in situ DRIFTS, and their catalytic activities in NO oxidation were evaluated. The results showed the γ-MnO2-HS sample possessed the highest activity and could oxidize 91.1% of NO at 275 °C, which was obviously higher than those of the γ-MnO2-SU and γ-MnO2-F catalysts. It was found that the presence of abundant surface-adsorbed oxygen and the largest quantity of Mn3+ over the γ-MnO2-HS material respectively accelerated the processes of NO adsorption and O2 activation, which greatly promoted the NO oxidation process. This work provides significant insights into NO oxidation over γ-MnO2 catalysts.

Abstract:Developing a novel high-efficiency coal combustion technology with ultra-low NOx emission is urgently needed to sustain the good ecological environment. Here, the targeted regulation of local microenvironment around fuel-N, such as functional groups, radicals, molecular configurations, and reaction atmosphere, is realized by the selective oxidation. The molecular configurations, including pore networks and microcrystalline structure in coal, are well characterized through synchrotron radiation-induced SAXS (small angle X-ray scattering) and WAXS (wide angle X-ray scattering) simultaneously. Furthermore, by combining density functional theory (DFT) and experiments, the effects of the local microenvironment on the nitrogen transformation and NO evolution during the thermal conversion are focused on. The results indicate that for the PPA oxidation, the H radicals attack the adjacent carbon to pyrrole/pyridine nitrogen, promoting the conversion of fuel-N to HCN. On the other hand, for the H2O2 oxidation, disrupting the π bond electron cloud by the CO and C = O on the ortho carbon of pyrrole/pyridine dominates the NH3 generation. Additionally, the increased La (average graphene layer extent), a3 (average interlayer spacing), σ3 (standard deviation of interlayer spacing) and σ1 (standard deviation of the first-neighbor distribution) induce massive smaller pores, promoting the generation of abundant reaction defects inside the particles. Importantly, the intensified adsorption on abundant active sites lead to the decreased HCN and increased NH3 evolution, which is adverse for the interaction between homogeneous and heterogeneous NO reduction. Interestingly, the PAA selective oxidation can reduce NO emission by 31.72 % - 34.30 % during the air combustion, which is far better than the H2O2 oxidation. Overall, the attack of free radicals on nitrogen-containing heterocycles promotes the conversion of fuel-N to HCN, the adsorption of which on char surfaces can further enhance the heterogeneous reduction in a lean oxygen atmosphere. The work here provides a novel route for developing high-efficiency and low-NOx combustion technologies.

Abstract:The MnOx/TiO2 catalysts have been proved very active in the catalytic oxidation, of NO to NO2, but the mechanism of this heterogeneous reaction was still not clear. In this study, through a systematic in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy investigation, the main pathway of NO oxidation over MnOx/TiO2 was revealed. Experimental results indicated that the NO was first coordinated to Mn sites, forming nitrosyls, which were readily oxidized to nitrates by lattice oxygen, and then the nitrates we:re decomposed to NO2, at high temperatures. However, when SO2 was present, the formation of nitrates was significantly hindered because the SO2 would permanently occupy the active Mn sites as sulfates. We believe that this revealed the mechanism of NO oxidation and SO2 deactivation would provide useful guidance for the development of better catalysts toward fast selective catalytic reduction, NO storage-reduction, continuously regenerating trap, and NOx wet scrubbing.
Degreening Effect During NO Oxidation over Pt/Al2O3 Catalyst

Abstract:Part of NO is oxidized to NO2 when the emission gas goes through diesel oxidation catalysts (DOC). Proper NO2/NOx concentration increases the low-temperature soot oxidation rate of diesel particulate filter (DPF) and the NOx conversion efficiency of selective catalytic reduction catalyst (SCR). In order to study the degreening effect of DOC, in-situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (In-situ DRFTS), H-2 temperature-programmed reduction (H-2-TPR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and High-revolution transmission electron microscope (HR-TEM) were used to characterize the Pt/Al2O3 catalyst. Results show that a large amount of nitrate and nitrite species are accumulated in the fresh Pt/Al2O3 catalysts below 300 degrees C, which causes the low activity of fresh catalysts. The decomposition of PtOx species that interacts strongly with the substrate is the main cause of degreening effect after one temperature-programmed reaction. The particle size of Pt has no significant change after 3-cycle temperature-programmed reaction.
Effects of Adsorbed and Gaseous NOx Species on Catalytic Oxidation of Diesel Soot with MnOx–CeO2 Mixed Oxides

Abstract:MnOx–CeO2, MnOx and CeO2 catalysts were synthesized by the sol–gel method. The structural, redox and adsorption properties of the individual and mixed oxides were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), CO temperature-programmed reduction (TPR), NO temperature-programmed oxidation (TPO), NOx temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS). The TPO tests were performed with the soot–catalyst mixture under loose contact conditions to evaluate the catalytic activity of the oxide catalysts for soot oxidation. The MnOx–CeO2 mixed oxide catalyst presents the lowest soot oxidation temperature among the catalysts investigated in the presence of NO and O2. The synergetic effect between manganese oxide and ceria restrains the growth of oxide crystallites, increases the specific surface area and improves the low-temperature redox property. Especially, the activity of MnOx–CeO2 mixed oxides for NO oxidation and its capacity for NO2 storage in the form of surface nitrates are greatly enhanced. Not only the NO2 released from decomposition of surface nitrates but also that formed by catalytic oxidation of gaseous or adsorbed NO on the catalyst is confirmed important for soot oxidation. It is found by the in situ DRIFTS tests with the soot–catalyst mixture that the generation of surface oxygen complexes (SOCs), such as carboxylic anhydrides, lactones, quinine, ceto-enol groups, ethers and phenols, occurs at about 100°C lower temperature with exposure to NO than in the absence of NO, which is an important step for soot oxidation.

Abstract:This paper synthesized MnOx based catalysts with rational design of morphology to investigate the improvement in NO oxidation and SO2 resistance. SEM and TEM characterizations illustrated the fabrication of hollow morphology and irregular rod-like morphology. Significant enhancement in NO oxidation by O-2 was attained comparing with MnO2-C, especially at low temperature. Ce and Fe were selected as the second metal to modify H-MnO2 and MnO2-R catalysts. Notably, H-MnFeO2 equipped with rambutan-like morphology, further improved NO conversion, i.e., 89.8% at 220 degrees C (84.0% for H-MnO2). These catalysts with rational design of morphology displayed high BET surface area that was larger than 100 m(2)/g. For SO2 resistance, H-MnO2 exhibited the best 20 ppm SO 2 tolerance and maintained its initial NO conversion within 360 min rather than deactivation immediately as MnO2-C. The Ce and Fe addition on MnO2-R moderately improved the SO2 resistance within the whole 480 min test. Overall, the hollow cavity structure of H-MnO2 could provide shuttle space for oxidation and improved mass adsorption and transformation, thereby attaining the better NO conversion and SO2 resistance. Finally, the mechanism for NO oxidation was proposed according to in-situ DRIFTS results.

Abstract:We present a facile selective dissolution method for the surface modification of SmMn2O5 mullite (SMO) to increase the exposed sites for NO oxidation on the premise of excellent thermal stability. Surface Sm cations are partially removed during the treatment (SMO-H), leading to the exposure of B-site cations with higher electronegativity and oxygen vacancies. Under laboratory-simulated diesel combustion conditions, the SMO-H exhibits higher NO oxidation activity than the SMO and is comparable to that of the Pt/Al catalyst under a gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) of 120 000 mL g–1 h–1. In addition, the SMO-H possesses good thermal and steam stability during a 50 h test at 300 °C. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy results reveal that the SMO-H presents more Mn4+O6 octahedral groups and oxygen vacancies than the SMO. In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS), near-ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (NAP-XPS), and density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that the valence of surface Mn decreased after NO capture up to 300 °C and fulfilled the adsorption procedure as nitrite and/or nitrate species when O2 is involved in the flue gas. The results indicate that Mn-terminated surface rather than Sm-terminated one is the major adsorption site for NO.

Dominant Chemistry and Physical Factors Affecting No Formation and Control in Oxy-Fuel Burning

Abstract:NO formation in oxygen-enriched counterflow methane diffusion flames has been computationally studied with detailed chemistry and transport properties. Particular interests are the identification of the dominant chemistry in the production of NO and the investigation of the sensitivity of NO production due to effects of air infiltration, fuel contamination, flame radiation, and aerodynamic straining when applying oxy-Fuel combustion as a control technique for NO emissions. It is shown that oxygen displacement significantly modifies the diffusion flame structure from the familiar one obtained with air as the oxidizer with thermal NO gradually replacing Fenimore NO as the dominant production pathway with increasing oxygen enrichment. Based on GRI-Mech 2.11, the net production of NO through the Fenimore mechanism is shown to be negative in oxygen-enriched combustion such that simulation of NO formation in oxy-fuel combustion by considering thermal mechanism alone will yield an overprediction of NO emissions. Important reactions leading to NO formation and destruction are also identified and compared under various levels of oxygen enrichment. It is further demonstrated that NO emission is very sensitive to the extent of air leakage and that it is advantageous to apply oxy-fuel control with even more than 0.6% nitrogen contamination of methane, provided that there is no severe air infiltration in the oxidizer stream. For the nonadiabatic oxygen-enriched combustion with radiative heat loss, the net production through Fenimore mechanism is negative over a wide range of strain rate, while NO emissions decrease with increasing strain rate. The study suggests that because NO formation can be substantially reduced with increasing strain rate and because oxy-fuel combustion is more resistant to stretch-induced extinction, the strategy to minimize effects of air infiltration and fuel contamination is to operate the burner at high turbulence intensities and, thereby, correspondingly high local strain rates.
Synthesis of Mn-Fe/γ-Al2O3 and Its Performance in Catalytic Oxidation of NO

Abstract:γ-aluminium oxide doped with Mn-and Fe-were prepared by incipient wetness impregnation.The effects of the metal loading,molar ratios of Mn and Fe and different base neutralization on NO conversion were investigated in a tubular reactor.The results show that Mn-Fe/γ-Al2O3 with 20% loading,metal molar ratio of 1 and tetramethy-lammonium hydroxide for acid-base adjusting gets the highest activity of 66% when the temperature is 300 ℃,inlet concentration of NO is 300 mmol/L,concentration of O2 is 5% and GHSV is 12 000 h-1.The phase structure and surface morphology of the mixed oxides were investigated by XRD and SEM,and the result shows that the crystal phase of samples is gradually separated,diffraction peaks of Fe2O3 and MnO2 are increasingly acute as the loading increases,in other words,active components are permeating into the carrier pores.In addition,samples neutralized by organic base have formed high surface dispersity and amorphous state crystal,which increases the NO conversion.

Abstract:Nitric oxides (NOx, which mainly include more than 90% NO) are one of the major air pollutants leading to a series of environmental problems, such as acid rain, haze, photochemical smog, etc. The selective catalytic oxidation of NO to NO2 (NO-SCO) is regarded as a key process for the development of selective catalytic reduction of NOx by ammonia (via fast selective catalytic reduction reaction) and also the simultaneous removal of multipollutant (pre-oxidation and post-absorption). Until now, scholars have developed various types of NO-SCO catalysts, dividing the main groups into noble metals (Pt, Pd, Ru, etc.), metal oxides (Mn-, Co-, Cr-, Ce-based, etc.), perovskite-type oxides (LaMnO3, LaCoO3, LaCeCoO3, etc.), carbon materials (activated carbon, carbon fiber, carbon nanotube, graphene, etc.), and zeolites (ion-exchanged ZSM-5, CHA, SAPO, MCM-41, etc.) in this review. This paper summarizes the recent progress of the above typical catalysts and mostly analyzes the catalytic performance for NO oxidation in terms of the H2O and/or SO2 resistances and also the influencing factors, and their reaction mechanisms are described in detail. Finally, this review points out the key problems and possible solutions of the current researches and presents the application prospects and future development directions of NO-SCO technology using the above typical catalysts.

Abstract:The exploitation of transitional metal catalysts for high-efficient conversion of NO to NO2 still persists as an imperative issue due to the high cost of currently used Pt–based catalysts. Herein, we report a TEA-modification strategy to anchor Mn single atoms/clusters on Al2O3 (Mn/Al2O3-T) for NO oxidation. Activity tests show that Mn/Al2O3-T (T 83 = 275 °C) displays a superior NO-to-NO2 capacity compared with the unmodified Mn nanoparticle on Al2O3 (Mn/Al2O3-B, T 66 = 300 °C) and Pt/Al2O3 (T 43 = 350 °C) counterparts. Comprehensive characterization and DFT calculations discover that the effective adjustment of TEA can promote the generation of coordination unsaturated Mn sites with elongated Mn-O bonds, which can improve the mobility of surface lattice oxygen and facilitate the activation of molecular oxygen. Additionally, reducing Mn size from nanoparticles to single atoms/clusters favors the formation of labile nitrate species and facile desorption of NO2, thereby regenerating active sites and accelerating overall NO oxidation reaction.

Manganese-Based Catalysts Supported on Titania for the Oxidation of Nitric Oxide

Abstract:Manganese-based catalysts supported on TiO2 were studied for the oxidation of NO to NO2 in excess oxygen to remove NO from flue gas. Catalysts were prepared by incipient impregnation, excessive dipping and ultrasonic improved impregnation. The effects of precursor, manganese loadings, preparation method of catalysts and calcination temperature of catalysts on NO oxidation were investigated in details. Mn/TiO2-10% catalysts made from Mn(NO3)2 and prepared by excessive dipping had the highest NO oxidation. More than 60% NO conversion was obtained at 200degC under the condition of 500 ppm NO, 3% O2 and the balance N2, GHSV=19,200 h-1.

Abstract:Elimination of soot particles from diesel exhaust remains one of the most pressing environmental issues. During the NOx-assisted soot catalytic oxidation process, it is proposed that the enhanced adsorption of NOx species (including NO and NO2) on the catalyst plays an important role in soot combustion. In this work, the 3DOM mullite catalysts with distinct NOx adsorption properties were designed, and the effect of NOx adsorption intensity on soot combustion behavior was investigated. It is proven that the soot combustion activity of 3DOM SmMn2O5 (SMO) catalyst was greatly improved when the adsorption of NOx on the catalyst was strengthened by the modification of K2Mn4O8 (KMO). Among all the as-prepared catalysts, the 5% KMO-SMO catalyst stands out with the best performance with the T-10, T-50, T-90 and S-CO2 of 299 degrees C, 336 degrees C, 383 degrees C and 99%, which represents one of the best catalysts for soot combustion application. Besides, our reaction mechanism analysis illustrates the importance of balancing the NOx adsorption and NO oxidation on modified SMO catalyst for NOx-assisted soot combustion reaction. Abstract:Series of Fe-modified MnO2 catalysts were prepared to improve low-temperature NO oxidation. Introduction of Fe3+ resulted in a phase transformation from α-MnO2 to ε-MnO2. Hexagonal Fe0.32MnO2 exhibited the highest activity with the lowest T50 of 156 °C and the maximum NO conversion of 80% at 250 °C. It also possessed the best reducibility and abundant readily available oxygen species, which facilitated the oxidation of NO. Major differences in the NO oxidation reaction route between α-MnO2 and Fe0.32MnO2 were the adsorption sites and the type of intermediates. The synergetic effect between Fe and Mn enhanced the activation of NO and O2.
A First-Principles Based Microkinetic Study of ZnMn1.5TM0.5O4 (TM = 3d Transition Metal) for NO Oxidation

Abstract:A highly-efficient NO oxidation catalyst is urgently needed due to serious NO pollution. Herein, we perform first principles calculations and microkinetic analysis to investigate NO oxidation properties of pristine and 3d transition metal doped ZnMn2O4 that exhibits similar Mn-Mn dimer features to SmMn2O5. It is found that two different categories of NO oxidation mechanism with different O-2 adsorption and dissociation behaviors occur on pristine and B-site doped ZnMn2O4. The microkinetic analysis shows that Cu, Fe, Zn, Ti, Cr and Ni doping can effectively promote the reaction rates of NO oxidation, with Cu and Fe doped ZnMn2O4 showing the best low -temperature NO oxidation performance. Sc, V, and Co doping are predicted not to be beneficial to performance enhancement. A general relation between NO oxidation reactivity and NO adsorption energies is proposed to quantitatively depict the key factors influencing NO oxidation performance. The relation provides a specific strategy for the optimization of NO oxidation that ZnMn1.5TM0.5O4 (TM = 3d transition metal) with first and second NO adsorption energies (E-ad) in the ranges of-2.40 --2.00eV and-1.50 --0.25eV respectively have good NO oxidation performance, respectively. Our paper paves a feasible road for the applications of ZnMn1.5TM0.5O4 as the NO oxidation catalyst.
Diesel soot combustion in air-NO environment: Evolution of functional groups on soot surfaces

Abstract:It is inevitable for NO to be involved in the soot combustion in diesel particulate filters (DPFs), so giving full play to the NO oxidation activity is one of the most effective means to improve the DPF regeneration performance. In this work, based on the results of programmed temperature oxidation (TPO) experiments, Fourier transfer inference spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, the evolution of surface functional groups was seriously analyzed to explore the soot oxidation mechanism. The results revealed that with the presence of NO in the air atmosphere, the concentration of -ONO 2 groups showed an increasing trend in the early oxidation stage of 0–20 % oxidation degree (OD) and then slowly decreased during 20–80 % OD, while the variations in CH functional group concentration were directly related to the concentration NO in the air atmosphere. COO functional group is easy to decompose, and NO promotes COO's generation and decomposition. The sp 3 /sp 2 hybrid ratio is strongly correlated with CO (carbon‐oxygen double bond), but the content of CO is also affected by the desorption of COO functional groups. Abstract:SmMn2O5 has been reported as a promising substitute for noble metals to achieve highly efficient NO oxidation. In this work, the composites of carbon nanomaterials (carbon nanotubes and graphene oxide) and SmMn2O5 nanocrystals are successfully synthesized through a hydrothermal method, and their catalytic activities for NO oxidation are investigated as well. The performance evaluation indicates that the introduction of carbon nanotube and graphene oxide in the SmMn2O5 nanocrystal composites improve the activity for NO oxidation. Carbon nanotubes contribute to the improvement of the catalytic activity in the low-temperature region, while graphene oxide helps to increase activity in the high-temperature region. By the analysis of differential scanning calorimetry, the performance improvement of the NO oxidation is found to be dependent on the heat release of carbon nanomaterials in the different temperature regions. These results could provide a new way to improve the NO oxidation performance of SmMn2O5 nanocrystals.

Abstract:Nitric oxide (NO) deep oxidation to dinitrogen pentoxide (N2O5) by ozone together with wet scrubbing has become a promising technology for nitrogen-oxide (NOx) removal in industrial boilers. Catalysts were introduced to enhance the N2O5 formation rate with less ozone injection and leakage. A series of monometallic catalysts (manganese, cobalt, cerium, iron, copper, and chromium) as prepared by the sol-gel method were tested. The manganese oxides achieved an almost 80% conversion efficiency at an ozone (O3)/NO molar ratio of 2.0 in 0.12 s. The crystalline structure and porous parameters were determined. The thermodynamic reaction threshold of NO conversion to N2O5 is oxidation with an O3/NO molar ratio of 1.5. Spherical alumina was selected as the support to achieve the threshold, which was believed to improve the catalytic activity by increasing the surface area and the gas-solid contact time. Based on the manganese oxides, cerium, iron, chromium, copper, and cobalt were introduced as promoters. Cerium and iron improved the deep-oxidation efficiency compared with manganese/spherical alumina, with less than 50 mg/m3 of outlet NO + nitrogen oxide, and less than 25 mg/m3 of residual ozone at an O3/NO molar ratio of 1.5. The other three metal oxides inhibited catalytic activity. X-ray diffraction, nitrogen adsorption, hydrogen temperature-programmed reduction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results indicate that the catalytic activity is affected by the synergistic action of NOx oxidation and ozone decomposition.

Abstract:Catalytic diesel particulate filter is an efficient equipment for particulate matters control downstream of a diesel engine. MnO x –CeO 2 mixed oxides are a potential alternative of the high cost commercial platinum catalyst. However, the poor thermal stability and sulfur resistance are two issues challenging its application. Additionally, the mechanism of synergistic effect between manganese oxide and ceria still remained debatable. Here, the catalysis mechanisms in the presence/absence of NO x were reviewed. The origins of synergistic effects were discussed based on whether the solid solutions formed or not. Meanwhile, different kinds of metal modifications were summarized and their promotion influences on the thermal stability and sulfur resistance were clarified in detail. Graphical Abstract
