Abstract:A 900-MHz two-stage CMOS voltage controlled ring oscillator (VCRO) with quadrature output is presented. The circuit is designed in a 0.18-um CMOS technology and operated on a 1.8-V supply voltage. The VCRO have a tuning range of 730 MHz to 1.43 GHz and good tuning linearity. Between 0 V and 1.1 V of control voltage, the gain of VCRO is around −620 MHz/V. At 900 MHz, the phase noise of the VCRO is −106.1 dBc/Hz at 600-KHz frequency offset with power consumption of 65.5 mW.

Abstract:This paper presents a quadrature VCO that can be reconfigured between 6 and 9 GHz frequency bands. The dual-band VCO comprises a 6 GHz LC VCO, two 1/2-dividers, two mixers, and two 3 GHz notch filters. The 9 GHz output is generated based on a fractional frequency multiplication method by mixing the 6 GHz VCO output with its divide-by-two signal. The VCO, implemented in a 0.18 /spl mu/m SiGe BiCMOS technology, shows a fast switching time of 3.6 nsec. The measured VCO phase noises are -106 dBc/Hz and -104 dBc/Hz at 1 MHz offset for 6 and 9 GHz modes, respectively, while draining 10.8 mA from a 1.8 V supply.

Abstract:A completely integrated 1.8GHz low-power ring-based voltage-controlled oscillator(VCO) is designed in SMIC 0.18μm CMOS process by using p-type current steering logic(CSL) structure as the delay cell.With single 1.8V supply,it has a tuning range of 1GHz and a phase noise of-96.4dBc/Hz at 3MHz offset from center frequency through out the tuning range.The total power consumption is 1.40mW.Comparison shows that this design has better performance than previously published similar results.

Abstract:This paper presents a two-stage voltage-controlled ring oscillator with extra wide tuning range,high operation frequency and low phase noise,using source degenerated resists,cross coupled structure and loads controlled by mixed signals.This two-stage VCO can be applied for the continuous rate clock and data recovery circuit.The simulation results under 0.25μm TSMC N-well CMOS process show that the tuning range of the proposed VCO is as wide as 200MHz～1.85G while Kvco remains at about 300MHz/V.

Abstract:The unlicensed band around 60 GHz has been allocated for wireless communications at data rates of several gigabits per second, consequently the high speed transceivers operating at 60 GHz is receiving significant research interest. This paper presents a 60 GHz voltage-controlled oscillator using linear superposition technique in SMIC 0.18 Â¿m CMOS technology. This technique demonstrates the design feasibility for an oscillator whose output frequency is much higher than the device fmax. The proposed circuit consists of a quadrature voltage-controlled oscillator (QVCO) and a transconductance stage. The circuit exhibits a wide tuning range of 3.6 GHz and a phase noise of -85 dBc/Hz at 1 MHz offset within the entire frequency range while consuming 30.8 mW power from a 1.4V supply voltage. The output power with a 50 Â¿ load is about -33 dBm without an output amplifier. In the real system, the output load should be replaced by 50-100fF capacitive load and the output power can reach about -20 dBm. The circuit occupies a core area of 650Ã700 Â¿m2.

Abstract:This paper presents a G-band quadrature voltage controlled oscillator (QVCO) enabled by a superharmonic injection technique. This technique ensures differential phases at the common mode tail current source nodes of two differential oscillators, which are then enforced to generate quadrature outputs. It achieves a maximum output power of -1.54 dBm with the efficiency of 3.2% and the tuning range (TR) from 149.3 GHz to 152.4 GHz. The measured phase noise (PN) is -91.9 dBc/Hz at 1 MHz offset. The IQ outputs are down-converted by an on-chip mixer for phase and amplitude accuracy measurement. The measured I/Q phase mismatch is less than 1.5. and amplitude mismatch of less than 0.33 dB over the operating frequency range. The QVCO is implemented in a 28 nm CMOS process, occupying 0.028 mm(2) chip area.

Abstract:A four-stage voltage-controlled oscillator is designed.With two auxiliary feed-forward loops, the designed VCO achieves dual tuning function and high FOM.Jazz 0.18 μm CMOS technology is implemented.The current of the VCO is 18.98 mA under a supply voltage of 1.6 V.Post simulation results show that the coarse tuning range covers 1.42 GHz with center frequency 4.488 GHz while the gain is only 147 MHz/V.The Phase noise of the VCO is-104.3 dBc/Hz at 1 MHz offset.The corresponding FOM at 1 MHz offset and 5 MHz offset are 169.10 and 173.39 respectively.

Abstract:An 8.2 GHz low-phase-noise Class-F quadrature voltage controlled oscillator (QVCO) is presented. With the proposed triple coupling technique, the oscillation frequency of the QVCO is only determined by the inter-stage passive matching components, and the introduced third harmonic at the drain of the transistors help form the approximately square voltage waveform to achieve low impulse-sensitivity function (ISF) value, which results in good phase noise performance and good quadrature phase accuracy. Implemented in 65nm CMOS, the QVCO shows a measured phase noise of -120.86 dBc/Hz at 1 MHz offset from 7.76 GHz carrier frequency (188.4 dBc/Hz FoM value), and a measured quadrature phase error of 0.72 degrees. The QVCO consumes 10.6-12.3 mW power from one 0.6 V supply and 0.38mm(2) active die area.

Abstract:This paper presents a low phase noise ring voltage controlled oscillator (ring VCO) based on two differential delay cells with cross-coupled MOSFET pair which provide proper initial condition and sustain oscillating. The phase noise of VCO has been improved by using MOSFETs working in linear region as voltage controlled devices instead of working in saturation region (current source). Besides, the cross-coupled pMOS pairs was adopted instead inverters to save power. The VCO was designed in SMIC 40nm CMOS technology, covering a wide tuning range of 8-11GHz under the 1.1V supply. The VCO's phase noise is - 86.2dBc/Hz@1MHz at 10GHz with 8.2mW power consumption.

Abstract:A 7-GHz CMOS voltage controlled ring oscillator that employs multiloop technique for frequency boosting is presented in this paper. The circuit permits lower tuning gain through the use of coarse/fine frequency control. The lower tuning gain also translates into a lower sensitivity to the voltage at the control lines. Fabricated in a standard 0.13-$\mu$ m CMOS process, the proposed voltage-controlled ring oscillator exhibits a low phase noise of −103.4 dBc/Hz at 1 MHz offset from the center frequency of 7.64 GHz, while consuming a current of 40 mA excluding the buffer.

Abstract:In this paper, a 2.9 GHz phase-locked loop (PLL) based on a three-stage CMOS ring oscillator is presented. A simplified ring voltage-controlled oscillator is used in the PLL fabricated in 110-nm CMOS technology. The delay cell of the VCO only consists of six transistors and the wide tuning range of the proposed ring VCO is from 1.6 GHz to 7.8 GHz. At 1.2V supply voltage, the PLL consumes 13mW at 2.9 GHz output. The worst-case in-band phase noise of the measured PLL is -98 dBc/Hz while the ring oscillator phase noise is -92 dBc/Hz at 1MHz offset.

Abstract:An LC voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) is proposed to achieve low-phase-noise and low-power designs even at a 0.5 V supply. The advantages of the proposed LC VCO are described together with its detailed analysis and its characteristics. Despite of the low power supply, the VCO achieves wide tuning range by using a. voltage-boosted technique which can generate voltage higher than the supply voltage to bias the varactors. The VCO measures a phase noise of -113.83 dBc/Hz at 1MHz offset from 3.126 GHz oscillation frequency with 1.765 mW power dissipation drawn from 0.5 V power supply. The figure-of-merit (FOM) for this VCO is comparable to that of other state-of-the-art VCO designs operating at much higher supply voltage.

Abstract:A CMOS relaxation oscillator which generates quadrature triangular and square waveforms is presented and fabricated in 0.18 mu m CMOS. The proposed oscillator consists of cascaded two-stage charge-discharge full-differential circuits with sequential common-mode comparators based on cross-coupled connection. Experimental results show that the proposed oscillator generates quadrature-phase waveforms with less than 1% phase mismatch. The proposed oscillator also achieves a tuning range of more than 40% with digitally programmable timing capacitors and offers phase noise of 2132 dBc/Hz at 1 MHz offset frequency.

Abstract:A voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) which can generate 2.4 GHz quadrature local oscillating (LO) signals is reported. It combines a LC-VCO, realized by on-chip symmetrical spiral inductors and differential diodes, and a two-stage ring VCO. The principle of this VCO is demonstrated and further the phase noise is discussed in detail. The fabrication of prototype is demonstrated using 0.25 μm single-poly five-metal N-well salicide CMOS digital process. The reports show that the novel VCO can generate quadrature LO signals with a tuning range of more than 300 MHz as well as the phase noise - 104.33dBc/Hz at 600 KHz offset at 2.41 GHz (when measuring only one port of differential outputs). In addition, this VCO can work in low power supply voltage and dissipate low power, thus it can be used in many integrated transceivers.

Abstract:A high performance quadrature voltage-controlled oscillator (QVCO) is presented. It has been fabricated in SMIC 0.18 μm CMOS technology with top thick metal. The proposed QVCO employed cascade serial coupling for in phase and quadrature phase signal generation. Source degeneration capacitance is added to the NMOS differential pair to suppress their flicker noise from up-conversion to close in phase noise. A dedicated low noise and high power supply rejection low drop out regulator is used to supply this QVCO. The measured phase noise of the proposed QVCO achieves phase noise of −123.3 dBc/Hz at an offset frequency of 1 MHz from the carrier of 4.78 GHz, while the QVCO core circuit and LDO draw 6 mA from a 1.8 V supply. The QVCO can operate from 4.09 to 4.87 GHz (17.5%). Measured tuning gain of the QVCO (Kvco) spans from 44.5 to 66.7 MHz/V The chip area excluding the pads and ESD protection circuit is 0.41 mm2.

Abstract:This letter presents a novel LC voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) supporting the high-speed serial transmission standard of RapidIO in 0.13-mu m complementary metal-oxide semiconductor technology. The low phase noise is achieved through several techniques including current source switching, parallel coupled negative transconductance cell, and varactor bias combination scheme. Measured results of proposed circuit show a low phase noise of -120 dBc/Hz at 1MHz offset from 6.25 GHz carrier and tuning range of 4.8 similar to 6.8 GHz (34.48%) while consuming 7.4mW under the supply voltage of 1.2V. Abstract:A wideband ring voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) for the serial interface circuits in high-resolution data converters with wide clock frequency range is presented in this paper. The active loads of the proposed differential delay cell in the VCO is realized by a pair of PMOS current source in parallel with a pair of adjustable cross-coupled PMOS transistors, which are controlled simultaneously by the control terminal to enlarge the tuning range of the VCO. In order to achieve a maximum oscillation frequency of over 10GHz, only three stages of differential delay cells are adopted in the VCO. The VCO is designed in a 0.18μm CMOS technology. Simulated results show that the VCO achieves an oscillation frequency range of 1.6GHz to 10.9 GHz, and a phase noise of -92.25dBc/Hz@1MHz when the center frequency is 1.561 GHz. The VCO consumes 19.1 mW from a 1.8 V supply.

Abstract:This paper presents a low phase noise injection-locked doubler-based quadrature voltage controlled oscillator (ILD-QVCO). Instead of using conventional coupling scheme, an injection-locked doubler is introduced in the proposed ILD-QVCO to generate quadarature signals. In this architecture, phase noise is determined by the coupled VCOs, and the phase accuracy is determined by VCO oscillating at twice of the desired frequency. Thus, the trade-off between the two parameters in traditional QVCO does not exist in the ILD-QVCO. Besides, the novel QVCO proves to have a better phase noise than conventional QVCO. The proposed ILD-QVCO is designed and simulated in TSMC 130nm CMOS 1P8M process. Simulation results show that the ILD-QVCO has a phase noise of -120.4 dBc/Hz at an offset frequency of 1MHz from a 6.1GHz carrier, and draws a 7.15-mA current from a 1.2-V supply voltage. A 186.7-dB figure of merit (FOM) is achieved.
