Abstract:This paper studies the Cauchy problem for systems of semi-linear wave equations on $\mathbb{R}^{3+1}$ with nonlinear terms satisfying the null conditions. We construct future global-in-time classical solutions with arbitrarily large initial energy. The choice of the large Cauchy initial data is inspired by Christodoulou's characteristic initial data in his work \cite{Ch-08} on formation of black-holes. The main innovation of the current work is that we discovered a relaxed energy ansatz which allows us to prove decay-in-time-estimate. Therefore, the new estimates can also be applied in studying the Cauchy problem for Einstein equations.

We prove that the problem is locally well-posed in H s +1 for s > ¾ in 1 + 3 dimensions and s > ¼ in 1 + 2 dimensions. Moreover, it is shown that the result in 1 + 2 dimensions is sharp.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to study the long time behavior of solutions to the initial boundary value problem of critical semilinear wave equations with small data in exterior domain in high dimensions (n≥5). We prove that solutions cannot exist globally in time. The novelty is that we first use a cutoff function to transform the exterior problem to a Cauchy problem. Then we divide the time into two intervals, in one time interval we establish an energy estimate to control the error terms while in the other interval the asymptotic behavior of two test functions is used. Furthermore, we obtain the upper bound of the lifespan by following the idea of Zhou and Han (2014).

Abstract:We study the asymptotic behavior of global classical solutions of the Cauchy problem for general quasilinear hyperbolic systems with weakly linearly degenerate characteristic fields. Based on the existence results on the global classical solution, we prove that, when t tends to infinity, the solution approaches a combination of C-1 travelling wave solutions at algebraic rate (1 + t)(-mu), provided that the initial data decay at the rate (1 + \x\)(-(1 + mu)) as x tends to +/-infinity, where mu is a positive constant.

Abstract:It is proven that if the leftmost eigenvalue is weakly linearly degenerate, then the Cauchy problem for a class of nonhomogeneous quasilinear hyperbolic systems with small and decaying initial data given on a semi-bounded axis admits a unique global C1 solution on the domain {(t,x)|t⩾0,x⩾xn(t)}, where x=xn(t) is the fastest forward characteristic emanating from the origin. As an application of our result, we prove the existence of global classical, C1 solutions of the flow equations of a model class of fluids with viscosity induced by fading memory with small smooth initial data given on a semi-bounded axis.

Abstract:For the short pulse initial data with a first order outgoing constraint condition and optimal orders of smallness, we establish the global existence of smooth solutions to 2D quasilinear wave equations with higher order null conditions. Such kinds of wave equations include 2D relativistic membrane equations, 2D membrane equations, and some 2D quasilinear equations which come from the nonlinear Maxwell equations in electromagnetic theory or from the corresponding Lagrangian functionals as perturbations of the Lagrangian densities of linear wave operators. The main ingredients of the analysis here include looking for a new good unknown, finding some key identities based on the higher order null conditions and the resulting null frames, as well as overcoming the difficulties due to the slow decay of solutions to the 2-D wave equation, so that the solutions can be estimated precisely.

Abstract:We prove global stability for nonlinear wave equations satisfying a generalized null condition. The generalized null condition is made to allow for null forms whose coefficients have bounded norms. We prove both the pointwise decay and improved decay of good derivatives using bilinear energy estimates and duality arguments. Combining this strategy with the estimates of Dafermos–Rodnianski then allows us to prove the global stability. The proof requires analyzing the geometry of intersecting null hypersurfaces adapted to solutions of wave equations.

Abstract:We prove an almost global existence result for the Klein-Gordon equation with the Kirchhoff-type nonlinearity on T-d with Cauchy data of small amplitude epsilon. We show a lower bound epsilon(-)(2N)(-2) for the existence time with any natural number N. The proof relies on the method of normal forms and induction. The structure of the nonlinearity is good enough that proceeds normal forms up to any order.
