Abstract:In this paper we develop a systematic reduction procedure for determining intermediate integrals of second order hyperbolic equations so that exact solutions of the second order PDEs under interest can be obtained by solving first order PDEs. We give some conditions in order that such a procedure holds and, in particular, we characterize classes of linear second order hyperbolic equations for which the general solution can be found.

Abstract:In this paper, we first consider the Cauchy problem for quasilinear strictly hyperbolic systems with weak linear degeneracy. The existence of global classical solutions for small and decay initial data was established in (Commun. Partial Differential Equations 1994; 19:1263-1317; Nonlinear Anal. 1997; 28:1299-1322; Chin. Ann. Math. 2004; 25B:37-56). We give a new, very simple proof of this result and also give a sharp point-wise decay estimate of the solution. Then, we consider the mixed initial-boundary-value problem for quasilinear hyperbolic systems with nonlinear boundary conditions in the first quadrant. Under the assumption that the positive eigenvalues are weakly linearly degenerate, the global existence of classical solution with small and decay initial and boundary data was established in (Discrete Continuous Dynamical Systems 2005; 12(1):59-78; Zhou and Yang, in press). Abstract:In this paper we develop a bilinearisation-reduction approach to derive solutions to the classical and nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equations with nonzero backgrounds. We start from the second order Ablowitz-Kaup-Newell-Segur coupled equations as an unreduced system. With a pair of solutions $(q_0,r_0)$ we bilinearize the unreduced system and obtain solutions in terms of quasi double Wronskians. Then we implement reductions by introducing constraints on the column vectors of the Wronskians and finally obtain solutions to the reduced equations, including the classical NLS equation and the nonlocal NLS equations with reverse-space, reverse-time and reverse-space-time, respectively. With a set of plane wave solution $(q_0,r_0)$ as a background solution, we present explicit formulae for these column vectors. As examples, we analyze and illustrate solutions to the focusing NLS equation and the reverse-space nonlocal NLS equation. In particular, we present formulae for the rouge waves of arbitrary order for the focusing NLS equation.

Abstract:In this paper, we present new techniques for solving a large variety of partial differential equations. The proposed method reduces the PDEs to first order differential equations known as classical equations such as Bernoulli, Ricatti and Abel equations. The main idea is based on implementing new techniques by combining variations of parameters with characteristic methods to obtain many new and general exact solutions. In each class of PDE's, we give illustrated examples. Moreover, the method presented in this paper can be easily extended to classes of second order nonlinear PDEs.

Abstract:In this paper, we are concerned with the global existence and scattering of small data smooth solutions to a class of quasilinear wave systems on the product space $\mathbb{R}^2\times\mathbb{T}$. These quasilinear wave systems include 3D irrotational potential flow equation of Chaplygin gases, 3D relativistic membrane equation, some 3D quasilinear wave equations which come from the corresponding Lagrangian functionals as perturbations of the Lagrangian densities of linear waves, and nonlinear wave maps system. Through looking for some suitable transformations of unknown functions, the nonlinear wave system can be reduced into a more tractable form. Subsequently, by applying the vector-field method together with the ghost weight technique as well as deriving some kinds of weighted $L^\infty-L^\infty$ and $L^\infty-L^2$ estimates of solution $w$ to the 2D linear wave equation $\Box w=f(t,x)$, the global existence and scattering of small data solutions are established.

Abstract:For the short pulse initial data with a first order outgoing constraint condition and optimal orders of smallness, we establish the global existence of smooth solutions to 2D quasilinear wave equations with higher order null conditions. Such kinds of wave equations include 2D relativistic membrane equations, 2D membrane equations, and some 2D quasilinear equations which come from the nonlinear Maxwell equations in electromagnetic theory or from the corresponding Lagrangian functionals as perturbations of the Lagrangian densities of linear wave operators. The main ingredients of the analysis here include looking for a new good unknown, finding some key identities based on the higher order null conditions and the resulting null frames, as well as overcoming the difficulties due to the slow decay of solutions to the 2-D wave equation, so that the solutions can be estimated precisely.

Abstract:The author considers the life-span of classical solutions to Cauchy problem for general first order quasilinear strictly hyperbolic systems in two independent variables with "slow" decay initial data. By constructing an example, first it is illustrated that the classical solution to this kind of Cauchy problem may blow up in a finite time, even if the system is weakly linearly degenerate. Then some lower bounds of the life-span of classical solutions are given in the casethat the system is weakly linearly degenerate. These estimates imply that, when the system is weakly linearly degenerate, the classical solution exists almost globally in time. Finally, it is proved that Theorems 1.1-1.3 in [2] are still valid for this kind of initial data.
