Abstract:This paper is devoted to proving the sharpness on the lower bound of the lifespan of classical solutions to general nonlinear wave equations with small initial data in the case n = 2 and cubic nonlinearity (see the results of T. T. Li and Y. M. Chen in 1992). For this purpose, the authors consider the following Cauchy problem: {□ u = ( u_t )^3 , n = 2, t = 0: u = 0, u_t = ε g( x ), x ∈ℝ^2 , . where □ = ∂ _t^2 - ∑_i = 1^n ∂ _x_i ^2 is the wave operator, g ( x ) ≢ 0 is a smooth non-negative function on ℝ 2 with compact support, and ɛ > 0 is a small parameter. It is shown that the solution blows up in a finite time, and the lifespan T ( ɛ ) of solutions has an upper bound T ( ɛ ) ≤ exp( Aɛ −2 ) with a positive constant A independent of ɛ , which belongs to the same kind of the lower bound of the lifespan.

Abstract:By assuming certain local energy estimates on (1+3)-dimensional asymptotically flat space-time, we study the existence portion of the Strauss type wave system. Firstly we give a kind of space-time estimates which are related to the local energy norm that appeared in [13]. These estimates can be used to prove a series of weighted Strichartz and KSS type estimates, for wave equations on asymptotically flat space-time. Then we apply the space-time estimates to obtain the lower bound of the lifespan when the nonlinear exponents p and q >= 2. In particular, our bound for the subcritical case is sharp in general and we extend the known region of (p, q) to admit global solutions. In addition, the initial data are not required to be compactly supported, when p, q > 2.

Abstract:We study the Cauchy problem for systems of quasilinear wave equations with multiple propagation speeds in four space dimensions. The nonlinear term in this problem may explicitly depends on the unknown function itself. By some new (LtLx2)-L-infinity estimates of the unknown function, combining with some Klainerman-Sideris type weighted estimates, we get the sharp lower bound of lifespan T-epsilon >= exp (c/epsilon(2)) for the quasilinear system.

Abstract:The final open part of the famous Strauss conjecture on semilinear wave equations of the form \Box u=|u|^{p}, i.e., blow-up theorem for the critical case in high dimensions was solved by Yordanov and Zhang, or Zhou independently. But the estimate for the lifespan, the maximal existence time, of solutions was not clarified in both papers. Recently, Takamura and Wakasa have obtained the sharp upper bound of the lifespan of the solution to the critical semilinear wave equations, and their method is based on the method in Yordanov and Zhang. In this paper, we give a much simple proof of the result of Takamura and Wakasa by using the method in Y. Zhou for space dimensions n\geq 2. Simultaneously, this estimate of the life span also proves the last open optimality problem of the general theory for fully nonlinear wave equations with small initial data in the case n=4 and quadratic nonlinearity(One can see Li and Chen for references on the whole history).

Abstract:We study the initial-boundary value problem of quasilinear wave equations outside of a star-shaped obstacle in four space dimensions, in which the nonlinear term under consideration may explicitly depend on the unknown function itself. By some new $L^{\infty}_{t}L^{2}_{x}$ and weighted $L^{2}_{t,x}$ estimates for the unknown function itself, together with energy estimates and KSS estimates, for the quasilinear obstacle problem we obtain a lower bound of the lifespan $T_{\varepsilon}\geq \exp{(\frac{c}{\varepsilon^2})}$, which coincides with the sharp lower bound of lifespan estimate for the corresponding Cauchy problem.

This equation has an interesting physical background as it arises from the pressure-gradient model in compressible fluid dynamics and also in nonlinear variational wave equations. Under the initial condition ( u ( 0 , x ) , ∂ t u ( 0 , x ) ) = ( ε u 0 ( x ) , ε u 1 ( x ) ) (u(0,x), \partial _tu(0,x))=(\varepsilon u_0(x), \varepsilon u_1(x)) with u 0 ( x ) , u 1 ( x ) ∈ C 0 ∞ ( R 2 ) u_0(x), u_1(x)\in C_0^{\infty }(\mathbb {R}^2) , and ε > 0 \varepsilon >0 is small, we will show that the classical solution u ( t , x ) u(t,x) stops to be smooth at some finite time T ε T_{\varepsilon } . Moreover, blowup occurs due to the formation of a singularity of the first-order derivatives ∇ t , x u ( t , x ) \nabla _{t,x}u(t,x) , while u ( t , x ) u(t,x) itself is continuous up to the blowup time T ε T_{\varepsilon } .

Abstract:Firstly, we study the equation □u=|u|qc+|∂u|p with small data, where qc is the critical power of Strauss conjecture and p≥qc. We obtain the optimal estimate of the lifespan ln⁡(Tε)≈ε−qc(qc−1) in n=3, and improve the lower bound of Tε from exp⁡(cε−(qc−1)) to exp⁡(cε−(qc−1)2/2) in n=2. Then, we study the Cauchy problem with small initial data for a system of semilinear wave equations □u=|v|q, □v=|∂tu|p in 3-dimensional space with q<2. We obtain that this system admits a global solution above a p−q curve for spherically symmetric data. On the contrary, we get a new region where the solution will blow up.

Abstract:The author considers the life-span of classical solutions to Cauchy problem for general first order quasilinear strictly hyperbolic systems in two independent variables with "slow" decay initial data. By constructing an example, first it is illustrated that the classical solution to this kind of Cauchy problem may blow up in a finite time, even if the system is weakly linearly degenerate. Then some lower bounds of the life-span of classical solutions are given in the casethat the system is weakly linearly degenerate. These estimates imply that, when the system is weakly linearly degenerate, the classical solution exists almost globally in time. Finally, it is proved that Theorems 1.1-1.3 in [2] are still valid for this kind of initial data.

Abstract:We are concerned with a class of two-dimensional nonlinear wave equations $\p_t^2u-\div(c^2(u)\na u)=0$ or $\p_t^2u-c(u)\div(c(u)\na u)=0$ with small initial data $(u(0,x),\p_tu(0,x))=(\ve u_0(x), \ve u_1(x))$, where $c(u)$ is a smooth function, $c(0)\not =0$, $x\in\Bbb R^2$, $u_0(x), u_1(x)\in C_0^{\infty}(\Bbb R^2)$ depend only on $r=\sqrt{x_1^2+x_2^2}$, and $\ve>0$ is sufficiently small. Such equations arise in a pressure-gradient model of fluid dynamics, also in a liquid crystal model or other variational wave equations. When $c'(0)\not= 0$ or $c'(0)=0$, $c"(0)\not= 0$, we establish blowup and determine the lifespan of smooth solutions.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to the lifespan estimates of small classical solutions of the initial value problems for one dimensional wave equations with semilinear terms of the spatial derivative of the unknown function. It is natural that the result is same as the one for semilinear terms of the time-derivative. But there are so many differences among their proofs. Moreover, it is meaningful to study this problem in the sense that it may help us to investigate its blow-up boundary in the near future.

Abstract:In this paper, we first give a lower bound of the lifespan and some estimates of classical solutions to the Cauchy problem for general quasi-linear hyperbolic systems, whose characteristic fields are not weakly linearly degenerate and the inhomogeneous terms satisfy Kong's matching condition. After that, we investigate the lifespan of the classical solution to the Cauchy problem and give a sharp limit formula. In this paper, we only require that the initial data are sufficiently small in the $L^1$ sense and the BV sense.

Abstract:We obtain new estimates for the existence time of the maximal solutions to the nonlinear heat equation $\partial_tu-\Delta u=|u|^\alpha u,\;\alpha>0$ with initial values in Lebesgue, weighted Lebesgue spaces or measures. Non-regular, sign-changing, as well as non polynomial decaying initial data are considered. The proofs of the lower-bound estimates of life-span are based on the local construction of solutions. The proofs of the upper-bounds exploit a well-known necessary condition for the existence of nonnegative solutions. In addition, we establish new results for life-span using dilation methods and we give new life-span estimates for Hardy-Hénon parabolic equations.
