Abstract:This paper is devoted to proving the sharpness on the lower bound of the lifespan of classical solutions to general nonlinear wave equations with small initial data in the case n = 2 and cubic nonlinearity (see the results of T. T. Li and Y. M. Chen in 1992). For this purpose, the authors consider the following Cauchy problem: {□ u = ( u_t )^3 , n = 2, t = 0: u = 0, u_t = ε g( x ), x ∈ℝ^2 , . where □ = ∂ _t^2 - ∑_i = 1^n ∂ _x_i ^2 is the wave operator, g ( x ) ≢ 0 is a smooth non-negative function on ℝ 2 with compact support, and ɛ > 0 is a small parameter. It is shown that the solution blows up in a finite time, and the lifespan T ( ɛ ) of solutions has an upper bound T ( ɛ ) ≤ exp( Aɛ −2 ) with a positive constant A independent of ɛ , which belongs to the same kind of the lower bound of the lifespan.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the lifespan estimate of classical solutions with small initial data to the Cauchy problem of semilinear damped wave equations with the Fujita critical exponent. We establish the following sharp upper bound of the lifespan T(epsilon) <= exp (C epsilon(-2/n)) in higher dimensions (n >= 4), by using the heat kernel as the test function. Abstract:Firstly, we study the equation □u=|u|qc+|∂u|p with small data, where qc is the critical power of Strauss conjecture and p≥qc. We obtain the optimal estimate of the lifespan ln⁡(Tε)≈ε−qc(qc−1) in n=3, and improve the lower bound of Tε from exp⁡(cε−(qc−1)) to exp⁡(cε−(qc−1)2/2) in n=2. Then, we study the Cauchy problem with small initial data for a system of semilinear wave equations □u=|v|q, □v=|∂tu|p in 3-dimensional space with q<2. We obtain that this system admits a global solution above a p−q curve for spherically symmetric data. On the contrary, we get a new region where the solution will blow up.

Abstract:The open question, which seems to be also the final part, in terms of studying the Cauchy problem for the weakly coupled system of semilinear damped wave equations or reaction–diffusion equations, is so far known as the sharp lifespan estimates in the critical case. In this paper, we mainly investigate lifespan estimates for solutions to the weakly coupled system of semilinear damped wave equations in the critical case. By using a suitable test function method associated with nonlinear differential inequalities, we catch upper bound estimates for the lifespan. Moreover, we establish polynomial-logarithmic type time-weighted Sobolev spaces to obtain lower bound estimates for the lifespan in low spatial dimensions. Then, together with the derived lifespan estimates, new and sharp results on estimates for the lifespan in the critical case are claimed. Finally, we give an application of our results to the semilinear reaction–diffusion system in the critical case.

Abstract:By using the Strichartz esitmate and Picard iteration, we prove the subcritical(critical in some cases) global solution in $C_t H_x^s\cap C_t^1 H^{s-1}_x$ with small data for semilinear wave equation with nonlinearity of type $(\partial u)^k$($k\ge 1+\frac{4}{n-1}\vee 2$ and $(n,k)\neq (3,3)$). For $(n,k)=(3,3)$, we get the almost global existence. In addition, we give the global existence with radial data when $k> 1+\frac{2}{n-1}\vee 2$.

Abstract:By assuming certain local energy estimates on (1+3)-dimensional asymptotically flat space-time, we study the existence portion of the Strauss type wave system. Firstly we give a kind of space-time estimates which are related to the local energy norm that appeared in [13]. These estimates can be used to prove a series of weighted Strichartz and KSS type estimates, for wave equations on asymptotically flat space-time. Then we apply the space-time estimates to obtain the lower bound of the lifespan when the nonlinear exponents p and q >= 2. In particular, our bound for the subcritical case is sharp in general and we extend the known region of (p, q) to admit global solutions. In addition, the initial data are not required to be compactly supported, when p, q > 2.

Abstract:The author considers the life-span of classical solutions to Cauchy problem for general first order quasilinear strictly hyperbolic systems in two independent variables with "slow" decay initial data. By constructing an example, first it is illustrated that the classical solution to this kind of Cauchy problem may blow up in a finite time, even if the system is weakly linearly degenerate. Then some lower bounds of the life-span of classical solutions are given in the casethat the system is weakly linearly degenerate. These estimates imply that, when the system is weakly linearly degenerate, the classical solution exists almost globally in time. Finally, it is proved that Theorems 1.1-1.3 in [2] are still valid for this kind of initial data.

We prove a ill-posedness result for the “defocusing” case, and give an alternative proof for the supercritical “focusing” case, which improves the result in Fang and Wang (Chin. Ann. Math. Ser. Abstract:In this paper, we consider the Cauchy problem for a class of complex conservation laws, which is introduced by P.D. Lax and essentially a class of quasilinear hyperbolic systems in two space dimensions.
