Abstract:This paper studies the Cauchy problem for systems of semi-linear wave equations on $\mathbb{R}^{3+1}$ with nonlinear terms satisfying the null conditions. We construct future global-in-time classical solutions with arbitrarily large initial energy. The choice of the large Cauchy initial data is inspired by Christodoulou's characteristic initial data in his work \cite{Ch-08} on formation of black-holes. The main innovation of the current work is that we discovered a relaxed energy ansatz which allows us to prove decay-in-time-estimate. Therefore, the new estimates can also be applied in studying the Cauchy problem for Einstein equations.

Abstract:In this paper we prove a global existence result for nonlinear Klein–Gordon equations in infinite homogeneous waveguides, R×M, with smooth small data, where M=(M,g) is a Zoll manifold, or a compact revolution hypersurface. The method is based on normal forms, eigenfunction expansion and the special distribution of eigenvalues of the Laplace–Beltrami on such manifolds.

Under some weaker hypotheses on the interactions between two parts of equations, it is proved that for any given initial data with small W-1,W-1 and C-1 norms, the corresponding Cauchy problem admits a unique C-1 global classical solution. Abstract:It is proven that if the leftmost eigenvalue is weakly linearly degenerate, then the Cauchy problem for a class of nonhomogeneous quasilinear hyperbolic systems with small and decaying initial data given on a semi-bounded axis admits a unique global C1 solution on the domain {(t,x)|t⩾0,x⩾xn(t)}, where x=xn(t) is the fastest forward characteristic emanating from the origin. As an application of our result, we prove the existence of global classical, C1 solutions of the flow equations of a model class of fluids with viscosity induced by fading memory with small smooth initial data given on a semi-bounded axis.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove the global existence of Hölder continuous solutions for the Cauchy problem of a family of partial differential equations, named as $\lambda$-family equations, where $\lambda$ is the power of nonlinear wave speed. The $\lambda$-family equations include Camassa-Holm equation ($\lambda=1$) and Novikov equation ($\lambda=2$) modelling water waves, where solutions generically form finite time cusp singularities, or in another word, show wave breaking phenomenon. The global energy conservative solution we construct is Hölder continuous with exponent $1- \frac{1}{2\lambda}$. The existence result also paves the way for the future study on uniqueness and Lipschitz continuous dependence.

Abstract:In this paper, the authors prove the global existence and uniqueness of piecewise C-1 solution u = u(t, x) containing only n contact discontinuities with small amplitude to the generalized Riemann problem for general linearly degenerate quasilinear hyperbolic systems of conservation laws with small decay initial data. This solution has a global structure similar to the similarity solution u = U(x/t) to the corresponding Riemann problem. The result shows that the similarity solution u = U(x/t) possesses a global nonlinear structural stability.

Abstract:The paper concerns with the existence, uniqueness and nonexistence of global solution to the Cauchy problem for a class of nonlinear wave equations with damping term. It proves that under suitable assumptions on nonlinear the function and initial data the abovementioned problem admits a unique global solution by Fourier transform method. Abstract:The aim of this paper is to study the long time behavior of solutions to the initial boundary value problem of critical semilinear wave equations with small data in exterior domain in high dimensions (n≥5). We prove that solutions cannot exist globally in time. The novelty is that we first use a cutoff function to transform the exterior problem to a Cauchy problem. Then we divide the time into two intervals, in one time interval we establish an energy estimate to control the error terms while in the other interval the asymptotic behavior of two test functions is used. Furthermore, we obtain the upper bound of the lifespan by following the idea of Zhou and Han (2014).

Abstract:In this paper, we establish global existence of smooth solutions for Cauchy problem of the critical nonlinear wave equation with time dependent variable coefficients in three space dimensions where (g ij (t, x)) is a regular function valued in the spacetime of 3 × 3 positive definite matrix and (g ij (t, x)) its inverse matrix. Here and in the sequence, a repeated sum on an index in lower and upper position is never indicated. In the constant coefficients case, the result of global existence is due to Grillakis [5]; and in the time-independent variable coefficients case, the result of global existence and regularity is due to Ibrahim and Majdoub [7]. The key point of our proofs is to show that the energy cannot concentrate at any point. For that purpose, following Christodoulou and Klainerman [3], we use a null frame associated to an optical function to construct a geometric multiplier similar to the well-known Morawetz multiplier. Then we use comparison theorem originated from Riemannian Geometry to estimate the error terms. Finally, using Strichartz inequality due to [15] as Ibrahim and Majdoub [7], we obtain global existence.

Abstract:We study the asymptotic behavior of global classical solutions of the Cauchy problem for general quasilinear hyperbolic systems with weakly linearly degenerate characteristic fields. Based on the existence results on the global classical solution, we prove that, when t tends to infinity, the solution approaches a combination of C-1 travelling wave solutions at algebraic rate (1 + t)(-mu), provided that the initial data decay at the rate (1 + \x\)(-(1 + mu)) as x tends to +/-infinity, where mu is a positive constant.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the global conservative weak solutions for a class of nonlinear dispersive wave equations after wave breaking. We first transform the equations into an equivalent semi-linear system by introducing new variables. We then establish the global existence of solutions for the semi-linear system by using the standard theory of ordinary differential equations. Finally, returning to the original variables, we obtain the global conservative weak solutions for the original equations.
