Abstract:Tubular optical microcavities, which support whispering gallery modes duo to total internal reflection of light at the boundaries, are promising candidates with superior performances for optofluidic applications. The unique hollow channel structure of a tubular cavity can realize the perfect combination of integrated optics and microfluidics in a miniaturized component. By in-situ monitoring the changes of a tubular cavity's optical resonance modes, different liquids, liquids with carried nanoparticles (quantum dots), cells or molecules along with different concentrations and flow velocities can be sensitively detected. The high optofluidic sensitivity originates from the relatively thinner wall of the tubular cavity, which can possess more evanescent energy tail for interaction. It was demonstrated an optofluidic tubular cavity with a high sensitivity up to 880nm per refractive index unit (nm/RIU) by self-rolled-up technology, which agreed with theoretical calculatio. Rolled-up polymer/oxide/polymer tubular cavity was also demonstrated for excellent environmental relative humidity detection. Tubular microcavity fabricated by direct laser writing method enables a maximum sensitivity of 390 nm/RIU for liquid sensing by using tapered fiber coupling. A fully-integrated monolithic tubular optofluidic sensor has also been realized by directly integrating a tubular cavity with an underneath coupling waveguide. Our study suggests that tubular optical microcavity is expected as one of excellent candidates for on-chip optofluidic applications including liquid sensing, chemistry analysis and biological detection.
