Abstract:Today various nano-moieties including nanoparticles, nanocubes, nanosticks, nanoflowers and nanoprimes have been synthesised. It is an interesting challenge to build nanostructures using those nano-moieties as blocks owing to their distinct properties and numerous applications. Herein, we demonstrate a smart way, self-assembling, to arrange nanoparticles and nanocubes into a line, sphere, network, bowl-bottom etc. The obtained anisotropic nanostructures have been employed to enhance the sensor sensitivity and to identify the hot-spot position for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS).

Abstract:A simple method for the fabrication of submicrometer InP pillars with large surface area coverage has been developed based on a combination of colloidal lithography and inductively coupled plasma (ICP) etching technique using Cl(2)/H(2)/CH(4)/Ar chemistry. Pillars with different sizes could be fabricated by using colloidal SiO(2) particles with different sizes dispersed on the sample serving as masks. Pillars with lateral diameters as small as 60 nm and aspect ratios as high as 10: 1 have been obtained. The effects of etch parameters such as radio-frequency power, ICP power, and etching time on pillar fabrication are investigated. By a suitable choice of etch parameters and utilizing erosion of colloidal (mask) SiO(2) particle during etching, the height of the pillars as well as their shape can be modified from nearly cylindrical to conical shapes. Such a control on the shape of the structures in addition to the large surface coverage could be useful for applications in photovoltaics and for the fabrication of photonic crystals. For instance, continuous grading of the refractive index can be obtained for surfaces covered with conical pillars, which can be used as antireflecting surfaces in solar cells or for light extraction in light emitting diodes. Abstract:A recent research emphasis has been placed on the development of highly crystallized nanostructures as a useful technology for many photocatalytic applications. With the unique construction of semiconductor transition metal oxide nanostructures in the form of nanopillars—artificially designed pillar-shaped structures grouped together in lattice-type arrays—the surface area for photocatalytic potential is increased and further enhanced through the introduction of dopants. This short review summarizes the work on improving the efficiency of photocatalyst nanopillars through increased surface area and doping within the applications of water splitting, removal of organic pollutants from the environment, photoswitching, soot oxidation, and photothermalization.

Abstract:Peptide self-assemblies show intriguing and tunable physicochemical properties, and thus have been attracting increasing interest over the last two decades. However, the micro/nano-scale dimensions of the self-assemblies severely restrict their extensive applications. Inspired by nature, to genuinely realize the practical utilization of the bio-organic super-architectures, it is beneficial to further organize the peptide self-assemblies to integrate the properties of the individual supermolecules and fabricate higher-level organizations for smart functional devices. Therefore, cumulative studies have been reported on peptide microfabrication giving rise to diverse properties. This review summarizes the recent development of the microfabrication of peptide self-assemblies, discussing each methodology along with the diverse properties and practical applications of the engineered peptide large-scale, highly-ordered organizations. Finally, the current limitations of the state-of-the-art microfabrication strategies are critically assessed and alternative solutions are suggested.

Abstract:We report for the first time a facile lithography-free approach for fabricating nanopillars over large areas or in patterns. The key technique of this approach is that randomly-distributed nanoscale SiO2 patterns can be synthesized on substrates simply by removing photoresist with oxygen plasma bombardment. Those SiO2 nanopatterns may further function as masks in the following etching process for nanopillars. Based on this approach, a variety of microstructures containing nanopillars with diameters of 30~200 nm, which include surface micro channels, micro-cantilever probes and nanofences, have been fabricated. This approach can be applied both to silicon and metal substrates compatible with conventional micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) fabrication.

Abstract:We show that a combination of photoresist patterning and self-assembly of polymer spheres can be used to generate ordered arrays of silicon nanopillars in selected surface regions. The size and shape of patterns in the resist layer are shown to regulate the nucleation and growth of ordered monolayers of spheres, which are employed as templates for metal deposition and reactive ion etching. The method may be useful for applications in photonics requiring structural order on multiple length scales.

Abstract:A fabrication process of silicon hierarchical nanopillar arrays (NPAs) based on the self-assembled colloid particle monolayer is presented. Using colloid particles assembled by the evaporation-induced method as masks, well-ordered silicon NPAs were fabricated by assessing the deep reactive ion etching process. After the optimisation of the cycles of etching and passivation steps, double-layer hierarchical NPAs were achieved simultaneously. Systematic analysis and experiments were conducted to investigate the transition from well-ordered silicon NPAs to silicon hierarchical NPAs. An explanation of this transition is provided based on the collapsing phenomenon discovered in the experiments.

Abstract:Interest in developing nanoparticle (NP) monolayers via 2D self-assembly and their emerging applications in functional coatings and thin-film devices has dramatically increased in recent years. Self-assembled NP monolayers can exhibit unique physical and chemical properties that are distinct from those of individual NPs or corresponding holistic thin films due to the steric independence but functional coupling between NPs, as well as synergistic effects between NPs and the spacer medium. Efforts are focused on the fabrication of macroscopic-scale uniform NP monolayers with tunable internal structures, as well as the modification of NP monolayers for beneficial mechanical properties and strong adhesion with substrates. In this Review, we offer some highlights of the recent progress in the preparation of NP monolayers and challenges to be overcome toward applications in catalysis, sensing, photovoltaics, and information storage.

Abstract:Thanks to its unique features at the nanoscale, nanofluidics, the study and application of fluid flow in nanochannels/nanopores with at least one characteristic size smaller than 100 nm, has enabled the occurrence of many interesting transport phenomena and has shown great potential in both bio- and energy-related fields. The unprecedented growth of this research field is apparently attributed to the rapid development of micro/nanofabrication techniques. In this review, we summarize recent activities and achievements of nanofabrication for nanofluidic devices, especially those reported in the past four years. Three major nanofabrication strategies, including nanolithography, microelectromechanical system based techniques, and methods using various nanomaterials, are introduced with specific fabrication approaches. Other unconventional fabrication attempts which utilize special polymer properties, various microfabrication failure mechanisms, and macro/microscale machining techniques are also presented. Based on these fabrication techniques, an inclusive guideline for materials and processes selection in the preparation of nanofluidic devices is provided. Finally, technical challenges along with possible opportunities in the present nanofabrication for nanofluidic study are discussed.

Abstract:Nanoparticles form long-range micropatterns via self-assembly or directed self-assembly with superior mechanical, electrical, optical, magnetic, chemical, and other functional properties for broad applications, such as structural supports, thermal exchangers, optoelectronics, microelectronics, and robotics. The precisely defined particle assembly at the nanoscale with simultaneously scalable patterning at the microscale is indispensable for enabling functionality and improving the performance of devices. This article provides a comprehensive review of nanoparticle assembly formed primarily via the balance of forces at the nanoscale (e.g., van der Waals, colloidal, capillary, convection, and chemical forces) and nanoparticle-template interactions (e.g., physical confinement, chemical functionalization, additive layer-upon-layer). The review commences with a general overview of nanoparticle self-assembly, with the state-of-the-art literature review and motivation. It subsequently reviews the recent progress in nanoparticle assembly without the presence of surface templates. Manufacturing techniques for surface template fabrication and their influence on nanoparticle assembly efficiency and effectiveness are then explored. The primary focus is the spatial organization and orientational preference of nanoparticles on non-templated and pre-templated surfaces in a controlled manner. Moreover, the article discusses broad applications of micropatterned surfaces, encompassing various fields. Finally, the review concludes with a summary of manufacturing methods, their limitations, and future trends in nanoparticle assembly.

Abstract:In this paper, a simple, cost effective, and potentially universal method is proposed for the formation of high-aspect-ratio nanopillars on various polymers. Our method involves direct reactive ion etching (RIE) using self-formed nanomasks oriented from a dummy material (cover glass). The mechanism is evaluated using nanopillar characterization and surface analysis results from x-ray photoelectron microscopy (XPS) and Auger electron microscopy (AES). By varying the dummy material configuration and modifying the RIE etching time, the distribution and dimensions of the nanopillars can be manipulated to meet a range of requirements. The maximum structural aspect ratio of 60 (6.7 mu m high and 112 nm thick nanopillars) can be easily prepared using a 60 min self-masked high-aspect-ratio polymer nanopillars fabrication (SMHAR) process on poly(monochloro-p-xylylene) (Parylene C). Furthermore, nanopillars can also be generated using the same SMHAR process on poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) and SU-8 photoresist, creating nanostructured PDMS or SU-8 materials in lab-on-a-chip (LOC) or nano/micro-electromechanical systems (N/MEMS).

Abstract:Block copolymer (BCP) self-assembly, as a novel bottom-up patterning technique, has received increasing attention in the manufacture of nanodevices because of its significant advantages of high resolution, high throughput, low cost, and simple processing. BCP self-assembly provides a very powerful approach to constructing diverse nanoscale templates and patterns that meet large-scale manufacturing practices. For the past 20 years, the self-assembly of BCPs has been extensively employed to produce a range of nanodevices, such as nonvolatile memory, bit-patterned media (BPM), fin field-effect transistors (FinFETs), photonic nanodevices, solar cells, biological and chemical sensors, and ultrafiltration membranes, providing a variety of configurations for high-density integration and cost-efficient manufacturing. In this review, we summarize the recent progress in the fabrication of nanodevices using the templates of BCP self-assembly, and present current challenges and future opportunities.
Fabrication and Characterization of SiO2/Si Heterogeneous Nanopillar Arrays

Abstract:This work presents arrays of heterogeneous nanopillars stacked with Si bodies and SiO2 heads for biomedical applications. Novel crossed and overlapped spacer techniques are proposed to fabricate the nanopillar arrays in controllable dimensions. For the nanopillars in the arrays, the minimum spacing, body diameter and head tip-radius reach 100 nm, 23 nm and 11 nm, respectively. The maximum height is 1.2 μm. In addition, because of hydrophilic/hydrophobic selectivity between the SiO2 heads and Si bodies, localized nanoliter water-droplet condensing, fluorescein solution extraction and protein capturing are observed on the SiO2 pillar heads. These experiments demonstrate the great potential of heterogeneous nanopillars in biomedical applications.

Abstract:Gold nanostructures with unique optical, electrical and catalytic properties have found widespread use in diverse fields ranging from optics and sensing to nanomedicine and catalysis. There is growing interest in self-assembly of gold nanostructures because their localized surface plasmon resonance undergoes strongly interparticle coupling in close proximity, leading to collective properties that are distinctively different from that of individual building blocks. Considerable progress has been made in tailored synthesis of gold nanostructures and surface-engineering approaches to introduce functional coatings on the nanostructures, giving rise to nanoscale building blocks with defined structural parameters and properties, which make them excellent model systems to study the self-assembly of nanoparticles driven by functiona coatings. Polymers, especially amphiphilic block copolymers, exhibit intrinsic self-assembly in solution and bulk phase. Accumulated evidence has demonstrated that both molecular structures of the polymers and self-assembly conditions have a key impact on the structures formed by self-assembly, producing a wide spectrum of structures such as spherical micelles, cylindrical micelles, lamellae, and vesicles. As such, polymer coatings, which are commonly explored to impart colloidal stability of nanostructures, have emerged as an intriguing class of functional coatings to direct their self-assembly. The ability to tailor the structural details of the polymer coatings such as molecular weight, graft density and amphiphilicity is key to achieve controlled morphology and functionality of the resultant plasmonic assemblies. In this review, we summarize current strategies for constructing well-defined Au nanoparticle building blocks including "one-pot synthesis", "grafting to", and "grafting from" strategies. Based on these methods, assemblies of polymer-decorated nanoparticles were designed and formed across multiple dimensions, which brings about potential applications resulting from emerging optical, electronic, and catalytic properties. A protypical example is surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) which is greatly amplified in the interstitial space of the assemblies because of interparticle plasmonic coupling, providing a transduction mechanism for ultrasensitve detection. The ability of dissipating the energy of light irradiate through the combination of photothermal conversion and Mie-scattering makes it possible for the assemblies of Au nanoparticles to serve as imaging probes and therapeutic agents. Representative assemblies of Au nanoparticles, that have shown potentials for sensing and biomedicine, are highlighted in this review. We also emphasize the fundamental and technical challenges for precise control over polymer-guided self-assembly of gold nanoparticles. The combination of simulation and experiment open the avenue to a systematic understanding on the self- assembly of nanoparticles.

Abstract:This review introduces recent research in the area of self-assembled nanostructures from rod molecules in solutions; in particular one-dimensional nano-aggregates such as fibers, ribbons, tubules are highlighted. Self-assembled nanostructures are well-known to be strongly dependent upon the architecture of molecular building blocks; thus, in this review we discuss assembling behavior and the related functions associated with molecular shapes such as simple rod-coils, macrocycles, dendron-rod-coils, dumbbells, wedges and conjugated rods with lateral chains. In addition, biomimetic or bioconjugate amphiphilic rod systems are described.
