Abstract:Singular beams which possess helical phase wavefront or spatially inhomogeneous polarization provide new freedom for optical field manipulation. However, conventional schemes to produce the singular beams have difficulty in realizing the flexible switch between different singular beams. In this work, we have experimentally demonstrated the capability of dielectric metasurfaces to generate three types of singular beams and switch between them at working wavelength of 1550 nm . We have shown vortex beam and cylindrical vector beam generation with single metasurface and cylindrical vector vortex beam generation with two cascaded metasurfaces. Moreover, experimental demonstration on switching cylindrical vector beam into vortex beam has also been done by combining one quarter-wave plate and a Glan laser polarizer. The experimental results match well with the analysis from the Jones matrix calculations. The average conversion efficiency of cylindrical vector beam to vortex beam was estimated to be 47.7%, which was about 2.3% lower than the theoretical prediction.

Abstract:Photonic integrated devices that emit vortex beam carrying orbital angular momentum are becoming key components for multiple applications. Here we propose and demonstrate a high-efficiency vortex beam emitter based on a silicon micro-ring resonator integrated with a metal mirror. Such a compact emitter is capable of generating vortex beams with a high efficiency and small divergence angle. Vector vortex beams of various topological charges are selectively generated by the emitter at different wavelengths with an emission efficiency of up to 37%.

Abstract:Emerging applications based on optical beams carrying orbital angular momentum will likely require photonic integrated devices and circuits for miniaturization, improved performance and enhanced functionality. Recently we demonstrated a novel emitter of cylindrical optical vortex beams that carry photonic orbital angular momentum. The emitter consisted of a whispering gallery mode resonator embedded with gratings in the azimuthal angular dimension. This method can be generalized to produce other types of structured light beams that have some kind of cylindrical symmetry. The applications potentials and challenges in the devices in optical communications, quantum information systems, and optical sensing, imaging, and manipulation systems are also discussed.

Abstract:Radially polarized orbital angular momentum (OAM) beams could be applied in optical manipulation and optical microscopy. An integrated OAM beam emitter with radially polarized radiation is proposed on shallow-ridge silicon microring with azimuthally distributed gratings etched on top of the ring waveguide. Two key structural parameters, the number of grating elements, and the dimension of each grating element are optimized by considering both the OAM order purity (Cp) and the total radiation efficiency (ηall). With elaborate design, Cp = ~98%, ηall = ~49% are achieved by simulations, and the calculated energy ratio between the far-field radially and azimuthally polarized component is more than 11 dB, which indicates that the radially polarized component is predominant in the radiated electromagnetic field.

Abstract:We demonstrate the design, fabrication, and characterization of side-coupled airmode nanobeam photonic crystal cavities in silicon-on-insulator platform. Results show that repeatable devices achieve similar high loaded quality factors (>10(4)) and large optical energy ratio in low refractive region. The unload Q-factors of the fabricated cavities are estimated to exceed 10(5). With side-coupled configuration, high transmission of through port is achieved with typical insertion loss less than 0.5 dB. Wavelength shifts of the measured resonances with respect to the designed values are observed and well explained by considering the fluctuation of etching depth. The demonstrated side-coupled airmode nanobeam photonic crystal cavities may find their applications in ultracompact integrated photonics, especially for on-chip photonic sensor, notch filter, or optical switch.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrated a thermally tunable ring reflector, which is made up of a Y-branch splitter and ring resonator on SOI platform using a CMOS-photonics technology. The results show good reflectivity which can up to be 90 % near the 1550 nm. The reflective response is successfully tuned by one free spectral range through thermo-optic effect with a tuning efficiency of 5.3 mW/nm. We also discuss its applications in silicon hybrid lasers.

Abstract:Previous methods for the generation of accelerating beams are mostly based on bulky phase-only spatial light modulator. Here we propose an experimental scheme for the generation of accelerating beams by fabricating a quartz plate capable of realizing both phase and amplitude modulation. The phase modulation is implemented by aligned 16-level etching into the quartz plate, while the amplitude modulation is realized by controlling the duty ratio of the partial metal coverage locally. Based on this approach, a sinusoidal accelerating beam with multiple bending is generated for demonstration and propagates along a sinusoidal trajectory as expected.

Abstract:Light beams bearing orbital angular momentum (OAM) are used in various scientific and engineering applications, such as microscopy, laser material processing, and optical tweezers. Precise topological charge control is crucial for efficiently using vortex beams in different fields, such as information encoding in optical communications and sensor systems. This work presents a novel method for optimizing an emitting micro-ring resonator (MRR) for emitting vortex beams with variable orders of OAM. The MRR consists of a ring waveguide with periodic structures side-coupled to a bus waveguide. The resonator is tunable due to the phase change material Sb2Se3 deposited on the ring. This material can change from amorphous to crystalline while changing its refractive index. In the amorphous phase, it is 3.285 + 0i, while in the transition to the crystalline phase, it reaches 4.050 + 0i at emission wavelength 1550 nm. We used this property to control the vortex beam topological charge. In our study, we optimized the distance between the bus waveguide and the ring waveguide, the bending angle, and the width of the bus waveguide. The optimality criterion was chosen to maximize the flux density of the radiated energy emitted by the resonator. The numerical simulation results proved our method. The proposed approach can be used to optimize optical beam emitters carrying OAM for various applications.
Narrowband Diffuse Thermal Emitter Based on Surface Phonon Polaritons

Abstract:Abstract Thermal emission engineering with ability to realize spectral and spatial selection has attracted great attention in recent years. Nanophotonic control of thermal radiation has demonstrated narrowband thermal emitter but with high angle-sensitivity and diffuse thermal emitter but with low quality factor (Q). Here, we demonstrate a simultaneous narrowband, diffuse thermal emitter consisting of 80 nm (<λ/100) thick Ge nanostructures on a silicon carbide (SiC) phononic material. Based on surface phonon polaritons, a spectral coherent emission with a high Q factor of 101 is achieved at ∼10.9 μm wavelength in experiment. Furthermore, this phonon-mediated nanostructure provides spatial control with strong diffuse thermal emission with a full angle at half maximum of 70°. Additionally, the emission wavelength and intensity are tuned by replacing Ge with phase change materials (Ge2Sb2Te5 and In3SbTe2). The designed narrowband diffuse thermal emitter offers new perspectives for the engineering of emission and paves the way for infrared applications, including thermal sources, radiative cooling, infrared sensing, and thermal photovoltaics.

Abstract:Vector vortex beams simultaneously carrying spin and orbital angular momentum of light promise additional degrees of freedom for modern optics and emerging resources for both classical and quantum information technologies. The inherently infinite dimensions can be exploited to enhance data capacity for sustaining the unprecedented growth in big data and internet traffic and can be encoded to build quantum computing machines in high-dimensional Hilbert space. So far, much progress has been made in the emission of vector vortex beams from a chip surface into free space; however, the generation of vector vortex beams inside a photonic chip has not been realized yet. Here, we demonstrate the first vector vortex beam emitter embedded in a photonic chip by using femtosecond laser direct writing. We achieve a conversion of vector vortex beams with an efficiency up to 30% and scalar vortex beams with an efficiency up to 74% from Gaussian beams. We also present an expanded coupled-mode model for understanding the mode conversion and the influence of the imperfection in fabrication. The fashion of embedded generation makes vector vortex beams directly ready for further transmission, manipulation, and emission without any additional interconnection. Together with the ability to be integrated as an array, our results may enable vector vortex beams to become accessible inside a photonic chip for high-capacity communication and high-dimensional quantum information processing.

Abstract:A Twist of Light The angular momentum of photons can be used to encode and transmit information. Cai et al. (p. 363 ) developed a method for generating and emitting controllable orbital angular momentum states of light from a reconfigurable and scalable silicon photonic chip. Using micro-ring resonators embedded with angular gratings allowed the imprinting of optical angular momentum on the light propagating in the whispering gallery modes of the resonator. The method may enable large-scale integration of optical vortex emitters on complementary metal-oxide–semiconductor-compatible silicon chips.

Abstract:An integrated approach to thermal modulation of relative phase between two optical vortices with opposite chirality has been demonstrated on a silicon-on-insulator substrate. The device consists of a silicon-integrated optical vortex emitter and a phase controlled 3 dB coupler. The relative phase between two optical vortices can be actively modulated on chip by applying a voltage on the integrated heater. The phase shift is shown to be linearly proportional to applied electrical power, and the rotation angle of the interference pattern is observed to be inversely proportional to topological charge. This scheme can be used in lab-on-chip, communications and sensing applications. It can be intentionally implemented with other modulation elements to achieve more complicated applications.

Abstract:A photonic nanojet (PNJ) can be shrunk using a high index dielectric micro-particle to generate a narrow nano-beam. Considering silicon has a high refractive index and low absorption in near-infrared waves, here, we present a narrow nano-beam generation inside of a silicon photonic chip with a hemi-cylinder. The proposed design consists of a silicon hemi-cylinder on a silicon substrate with a micro-hole. At first, we investigate the narrow PNJ inside of the silicon substrate produced by a silicon hemi-cylinder on a silicon substrate. In order to make the PNJ inside of the silicon substrate usable, the properties of the PNJ influenced by the position of the added micro-hole filled with water are studied. A narrow nano-beam can be obtained when the position of the added micro-hole is well-chosen. Then, the narrow nano-beam affected by the silicon hemi-cylinder immersed different mediums is presented. Finally, we discuss the influence of the perturbation of illumination angle on the properties of the nano-beam. The proposed structure may have potential applications in enhanced Raman spectroscopy and optofluidic chips.

Abstract:As one kind of special beams, a terahertz (THz) cylindrical vector Bessel beam processes centrosymmetric polarization distribution and nondiffractive propagation properties. Such a vector Bessel beam is potential in various practical applications ranging from THz communication and electron acceleration to sensing and imaging. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a method to directly emit a broadband THz cylindrical vector Bessel (CVB) beam using nonlinear effects. By photo-exciting an indium tin oxide film coated axicon with a circularly polarized femtosecond laser pulse, a high-quality CVB beam is obtained in a broadband THz frequency range. The proposed method is universal and low-cost, opening a simple avenue for the emission of broadband THz specialty beams.

Abstract:The resonant optical excitation of dielectric nanostructures offers unique opportunities for developing remarkable nanophotonic devices. Light that is structured by tailoring the vectorial characteristics of the light beam provides an additional degree of freedom in achieving flexible control of multipolar resonances at the nanoscale. Here, we investigate the nonlinear scattering of subwavelength silicon (Si) nanostructures with radially and azimuthally polarized cylindrical vector beams to show a strong dependence of the photothermal nonlinearity on the polarization state of the applied light. The resonant magnetic dipole, selectively excited by an azimuthally polarized beam, enables enhanced photothermal nonlinearity, thereby inducing large scattering saturation. In contrast, radially polarized beam illumination shows no observable nonlinearity owing to off-resonance excitation. Numerical analysis reveals a difference of more than 2 orders of magnitude in photothermal nonlinearity under two types of polarization excitations. Nonlinear scattering and the unique doughnut-shaped focal spot generated by the azimuthally polarized beam are demonstrated as enabling far-field high-resolution localization of nanostructured Si with an accuracy approaching 50 nm. Our study extends the horizons of active Si photonics and holds great potential for label-free superresolution imaging of Si nanostructures.

Abstract:Semiconductor devices capable of generating a vortex beam with a specific orbital angular momentum (OAM) order are highly attractive for applications ranging from nanoparticle manipulation, imaging and microscopy to fiber and quantum communications. In this work, an electrically pumped integrated OAM emitter operating at telecom wavelengths is fabricated by monolithically integrating an optical vortex emitter with a distributed feedback laser on the same InGaAsP/InP epitaxial wafer. A single-step dry-etching process is adopted to complete the OAM emitter, equipped with specially designed top gratings. The vortex beam emitted by the integrated device is captured and its OAM mode purity characterized. The integrated OAM emitter eliminates the external laser required by silicon-or silicon-on-insulator-based OAM emitters, thus demonstrating great potential for applications in communication systems and the quantum domain.

Abstract:Cylindrical vector beams (CVBs), which possesses polarization distribution of rotational symmetry on the transverse plane, can be developed in many optical technologies. Conventional methods to generate CVBs contain redundant interferometers or need to switch among diverse elements, thus being inconvenient in applications containing multiple CVBs. Here we provide a passive polarization-selective device to substitute interferometers and simplify generation setup. It is accomplished by reversing topological charges of orbital angular momentum based on polarization-selective Gouy phase. In the process, tunable input light is the only condition to generate CVB with arbitrary topological charges. To cover both azimuthal and radial parameters of CVBs, we express the mapping between scalar Laguerre-Gaussian light on basic Poincaré sphere and CVB on high-order Poincaré sphere. The proposed device simplifies the generation of CVBs enormously, and thus has potentials in integrated devices for both quantum and classic optical experiments.
