Abstract:In order to reduce wheel-radiated wideband noise, a new solution that equipped the wheels with multi-degree of freedom (DOF) damped dynamic absorber (DDA) is proposed. The dynamic model of the wheel with absorbers was established. By numerical analysis, the primary structural parameters of the absorber influencing the noise control effect are obtained and optimized. The radiated noise is measured before and after the absorber installed in the laboratory and in the field. The test results show that the wheel-radiated noise could be substantially reduced, especially above 2000Hz. The test results agree well with the theoretical analysis. The parametric analysis provides reference value for the design of multi-DOF DDA

Abstract:This note corrects two errors in our previous paper ( Li et al 2008 Smart Mater. Struct. 17 065036) in which the active vibration control of beams treated with active constrained layer damping (ACLD) was studied analytically. The equation of motion of the whole beam/ACLD system is deduced again using Hamilton's principle with the Rayleigh–Ritz method. Abstract:In this paper, the generation mechanism of the negative airgap eccentricity effect for the in-wheel switched reluctance motor (SRM) driving system is analyzed. An independent current chopping control strategy is proposed to achieve optimum control between the response characteristic of the in-wheel motor driving system and the dynamic performance of electric vehicle (EV). Firstly, the electromagnetic characteristic of the studied SRM under airgap eccentricity is studied based on electromagnetic coupling model and circuit driving equation, and the radial electromagnetic force under different airgap eccentricity is verified by adopting the built experiment device. Then, combined with the excitation characteristics of the radial electromagnetic force, the negative dynamic effect of the in-wheel motor driving system is analyzed in the time–frequency domain. Finally, an independent current chopping control strategy for the in-wheel SRM driving system based on vehicle vibration feedback is proposed. The controller parameters including the turn-off angle and chopping current threshold are optimized by data interpolation. Results show that the proposed control strategy can achieve the optimum control between the response characteristics of the in-wheel motor driving system and the vehicle dynamic performance, especially to suppress the vehicle sprung mass acceleration and tire bounce while starting EV.

Abstract:As for the elastic layout of the direct-driven electric wheel system, the electromechanical coupling between the electromagnetic excitation of in-wheel driving motor and the weak damping system gives rise to negative vibration issues, which further deteriorate the dynamic performance of the electric vehicle. This paper presents a multi-objective optimization method for active suspension system to solve these issues by developing an integrated in-wheel motor electrical vehicles model. The unbalanced electromagnetic excitation from in-wheel driving motor is investigated by means of analytical and finite element methods. The Pareto solution set of optimal parameters are generated by the multi-objective particle swarm optimization method, and a comparison in vehicle dynamic performances is made to verify the targeted optimization method. The simulation results indicate that the optimized active suspension system attenuates the sensitivity of the vehicle system to electromagnetic excitation with a satisfactory balancing between vehicle ride comfort and stability as well as active suspension utilization.

The extra unsprung mass introduced by the propulsion motors becomes an unavoidable issue for electric wheel drive systems, resulting in deteriorated ride comfort and tire adhesion stability. This study presents an innovative wheel drive system based on the dynamic vibration absorber (DVA) to suppress the unsprung mass vibration, improving the suspension dynamic performance. Specifically, we apply the principle of adaptive transmission to generate an extra degree of freedom (DoF), enabling the propulsion motor to work as the DVA. Innovative solutions with different topologies are exploited and an appropriate one is selected for a specific chassis platform. Based on the quarter-suspension dynamics with 3 DoF, the optimal design regarding the component sizing and stiffness/damping characteristics of unsprung mass suspension is carried out to minimize the vertical body acceleration and dynamic tire load through the genetic algorithm. In practical application, bench tests of the prototype prove that the proposed electric wheel drive system has reasonable driving efficiency and torque tracking performance, which verifies the feasibility of the proposed structure.

Abstract:A self-powered electromagnetic vibration suppression and absorption system integrated with a magnetorheological damper and a linear motor is designed to attenuate the negative effect of vertical vibration caused by the increased unsprung mass for in-wheel motor electric vehicles in this article. The magnetorheological damper is used as a suspension damper to suppress body vibration, and linear motor is used as a dynamic vibration absorber, namely, linear electromagnetic dynamic vibration absorber, to absorb tire vibration, and regenerates the vibration power to drive the magnetorheological damper, realizing self-power. Based on power flow theory, the power transfer mechanism of the vertical vibration for in-wheel motor electric vehicles and the regeneration potential are analyzed. The negative effect on the dynamic performance of in-wheel motor electric vehicles is analyzed through the root mean square of dynamic responses. Moreover, the specific structure scheme of the self-powered electromagnetic vibration suppression and absorption system is provided. The influence of system mass, stiffness, and damping of the linear electromagnetic dynamic vibration absorber on the dynamic performance is analyzed, and these parameters are optimized by particle swarm optimization. Simulation results show that in comparison with a passive damper, the self-powered electromagnetic vibration suppression and absorption system can reduce the body acceleration by 17.05%, which is better than the magnetorheological damper (10.08%). The self-powered electromagnetic vibration suppression and absorption system increases the tire dynamic load by 5.62%, but it is 8.68% less than the magnetorheological damper. Additionally, the regenerated power can offset the consumed power adequately to realize self-power. Finally, a bench test is conducted to verify the effectiveness and feasibility of the self-powered electromagnetic vibration suppression and absorption system.

Abstract:Multi-motor-wheel drive systems have been recognized as a break-through concept that will have a major impact on future electric vehicle design.In-wheel motors provide many advantages such as reducing the curb weight,lowering vehicle floor,increasing the transmission efficiency and realizing the complex chassis control.However,in-wheel motors increase the unsprung mass,which cause the vibration of the body and deteriorate the tire road holding performance.To overcome these shortcomings,a new dynamic damper mechanism is proposed based on the vibration analysis of the central motor drive and in-wheel motor drive structures.Optimum design of the dynamic-damper mechanism spring stiffness and damping coefficient is conducted.The objective of optimization is to find the optimum values of the spring stiffness and damping coefficient for minimizing the vertical vibration amplitude of the unsprung mass.Simulation results indicate that the mechanism supplies an effective way to reducing the vibration of the motor-wheel drive system.

Abstract:In this paper, the fault-tolerant control problem of an active suspension in in-wheel motor driven electric vehicles (EVs) is studied. To reduce the dynamic force transmitted to the motor bearing, a dynamic vibration absorber (DVA) is installed on the in-wheel motor axle. The actuator fault and suspension parametric uncertainties are simultaneously considered and a robust H∞ fault-tolerant controller is designed to attenuate the effects caused by actuator fault and external disturbances. To reduce the motor bearing wear, we also take the dynamic force transmitted to the in-wheel motor bearing as a controlled output, besides the traditional performance requirements such as ride comfort, road holding, and actuator limitation. Simulation results under different road conditions show the effectiveness of the proposed control method.

Abstract:This paper presents a multi-objective optimization control method of active suspension system for solving the negative vibration issues emerged from In-Wheel-Motor (IWM) in electric vehicles. An integrated model which considering electromechanical coupling between electromagnetic excitation in motor and transient dynamics in vehicle is established and developed. The characteristics of electromagnetic excitation are discussed and its influences on vehicle dynamics are analyzed. The key factors are formulated and selected as the objective criteria for multi-objective optimization approach. The Pareto solution set of optimal parameters in active suspension system is generated by Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) method, a comparison in vehicle dynamic performances is made to verify the targeted optimization method. The simulation results indicate that the optimized active suspension system can effectively reduce the vertical component of unbalanced electromagnetic excitation by maintaining the relative eccentricity of driving motor in a reasonable interval meanwhile attenuate the sensitivity of the vehicle system to electromagnetic excitation. Furthermore, active suspension system also preserve dynamical advantages in vehicle by means of a balance between the ride comfort and the road holding. The proposed multi-objective optimization method of active suspension system demonstrates a potential application in engineering in order to solve vibration issues in electric vehicle with in wheel motor.

Abstract:Due to the low inertia, low damp, and high stiffness, in-wheel-drive system has vibration problems, especially under off-road conditions. Mechanical approaches such as applying additional inertia to wheels can effectively reduce the torsional vibration, however, that increases unsprung mass and brings more severe vertical vibration. In this article, electronic inertia is designed for the system to realize the same function of mechanical inertia. Joint simulation is conducted between Carsim and Matlab/Simulink, which shows that this method can suppress the torsional vibration to a satisfying level without extra cost.

Abstract:Abstract The distributed driving system with electric wheel as key feature has become a major research issue in new energy automobile. However, wheel-edge driving system with reducing gear may cause significant increase of unsprung mass due to introduction of motor and reducer, which is negative to the vehicle maneuverability. As a result, this paper proposed a structural design of two stage reduction wheel-edge driving system which can convert unsprung mass into sprung mass, and established 1/4 three degree-of-freedom vertical vibration system model. Through simulation analysis, the effectiveness of such design was verified. Results showed that two stage reduction wheel-edge driving system can effectively suppress vertical vibration amplitude of automobile body, reduce vehicle dynamic tire loads, and increase riding comfort and tire ground adhesion.

Abstract:In-wheel motor drive (IWMD) is currently a hot topic in electric vehicle research and development for its remarkable advantages. But the extra wheel mass from the motor worsens vehicle ride comfort and road holding. Motor vibration is another problem, which does harm to motor performance and service life. As a trial response to the above problems, a 1/4 car model is established for electrical vehicles driven by suspended in-wheel motors. Five indexes are then employed or defined to evaluate vehicle performances and motor vibration, which are the road holding, vehicle suspension deflection, motor suspension deflection and vertical vibration accelerations of the body and the motors. After sensitivity analysis on motor suspension parameters, optimization is then performed with two different cost functions defined in terms of the amplitude-frequency characteristic of each of the indexes. One function, noted as A-Opt, is the area enclosed by a characteristic curve and frequency axis. The other function, noted as P-Opt, is the summation of the peak values of the characteristic curve. Both the transfer function and the variance of the response are used to describe the vehicle performance. With the former function, focus is mainly put on the frequency response characteristics of the vehicle. With the latter one on the other hand, attention is paid to average amplitude variation for the vehicle on a typical road. Results are compared with those of equivalent electrical vehicles driven either by a centre motor or by fixed in-wheel motors. Results demonstrate that a properly designed motor suspension can effectively improve the performances of vehicles with in-wheel motor drive, including ride comfort, road holding and motor working condition. Furthermore, the second optimization strategy has advantages over the first one with regard to vibration reduction and resonance elimination.

Abstract:In-wheel-motor-drive electric vehicles have attracted enormous attention due to its potentials of improving vehicle performance and safety. Road surface roughness results in forced vibration of in-wheel-motor (IWM) and thus aggravates the unbalanced electric magnetic force (UEMF) between its rotor and stator. This can further compromise vertical and longitudinal vehicle dynamics. This paper presents a comprehensive study to reveal the coupled vertical–longitudinal effect on suspension-in-wheel-motor systems (SIWMS) along with a viable optimization procedure to improve ride comfort and handling performance. First, a UEMF model is established to analyze the mechanical–electrical–magnetic coupling relationship inside an IWM. Then a road–tire–ring force (RTR) model that can capture the transient tire–road contact patch and tire belt deformation is established to accurately describe the road–tire and tire–rotor forces. The UEMF and the RTRF model are incorporated into the quarter-SIWMS model to investigate the coupled vertical–longitudinal vehicle dynamics. Through simulation studies, a comprehensive evaluation system is put forward to quantitatively assess the effects during braking maneuvers under various road conditions. The key parameters of the SIWMS are optimized via a multi-optimization method to reduce the adverse impact of UEMF. Finally, the multi-optimization method is validated in a virtual prototype which contains a high-fidelity multi-body model. The results show that the longitudinal acceleration fluctuation rate and the slip ratio signal-to-noise ratio are reduced by 5.07% and 6.13%, respectively, while the UEMF in the vertical and longitudinal directions varies from 22.2% to 34.7%, respectively, and is reduced after optimization. Thus, the negative coupling effects of UEMF are minimized while improving the ride comfort and handling performance.

Abstract:This study aims to improve the vehicle vertical dynamics performance in the sprung and unsprung state for in-wheel-motor-driven electric vehicles (IWMD EVs) while considering the unbalanced electric magnetic force effects. An integrated vibration elimination system (IVES) is developed, containing a dynamic vibration-absorbing structure between the IWM and the suspension. It also includes an active suspension system based on a delay-dependent H∞ controller. Further, a novel frequency-compatible tire (FCT) model is constructed to improve IVES accuracy. The mechanical-electrical-magnetic coupling effects of IWMD EVs are theoretically analyzed. A virtual prototype for the IVES is created by combining the CATIA, ADAMS, and MatLab/Simulink, resulting in a high-fidelity multi-body model, validating the IVES accuracy and practicability. Simulations for the IVES considered three different suspension structure types and time delay considerations were performed. Analyses in frequency and time domains for the simulation results have shown that the root mean square of sprung mass acceleration and the eccentricity are significantly reduced via the IVES, indicating an improvement in ride comfort and IWM vibration suppression.
