Abstract:The static aeroelastic behaviours of a flat-plate forward-swept wing model in the vicinity of static divergence are investigated by numerical simulations and wind tunnel tests. A medium fidelity model based on the vortex lattice method (VLM) and nonlinear structural analysis is proposed to calculate the displacements of the wing structure with large deformation. Follower forces effect and geometric nonlinearity are considered to calculate the deformation of the wing by finite element method (FEM). In the wind tunnel tests, the divergence dynamic pressure is predicted by the Southwell method, and the static aeroelastic displacement is measured by a photogrammetric method. The results obtained by the medium fidelity model calculations show reasonable agreement with wind tunnel test results. A high fidelity model based on coupled computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and computational structural dynamics (CSD) predicts better results of the wing tip displacement when the freestream dynamic pressure is approaching the divergence dynamic pressure.

Abstract:In order to meet the economic and environmental requirements, turbomachine blades and aircraft wings are becoming more light and flexible, and bearing more mechanical and aerodynamic loads. However aerodynamic excitation would bring more variables into the structural vibration, and becoming an aeroelasticity problem. Unlike mechanical resonance vibration, the structure would interact with the aerodynamic excitation, and the aerodynamic excitation frequency would lock into structural natural frequency even the frequency margin is more than 10%. This phenomenon extends the high amplitude response range and should be noticed in safety design in order to deal with the margin in specific resonance conditions. In this paper, the aerodynamic excitation induced forced response is investigated with experimental setup including upstream cylinder and a downstream single NACA airfoil in wind tunnel. The upstream cylinder generates the vortices imposed on the NACA airfoil, brings periodic excitation on the flexible blade. Flow velocity is measured with hot wire anemometer (HWA) at upstream and downstream of the blade synchronously. Numerical simulation is conducted based experimental condition and verified by the measurements. Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) is applied to obtain the major flow structure at one typical flow condition. The structural properties of the airfoil including natural frequency and damping are evaluated through finite element analysis and hammer test. Based on the fluid and structure properties, coupled test and analysis can be conducted. The vibration characteristics of NACA airfoil at 1st and 2nd order modes are explored by altering the freestream velocity and cylinder diameter. The forced vibration of 1st order mode has the lock-in phenomenon, and the maximum amplitude point is not at the resonance point. But 2nd order mode shows typical resonance behavior.

Abstract:This note corrects two errors in our previous paper ( Li et al 2008 Smart Mater. Struct. 17 065036) in which the active vibration control of beams treated with active constrained layer damping (ACLD) was studied analytically. The equation of motion of the whole beam/ACLD system is deduced again using Hamilton's principle with the Rayleigh–Ritz method. Numerical results are recalculated and conclusions similar to those of Li et al ( 2008 Smart Mater. Struct. 17 065036) can also be drawn.

Abstract:Nonlinear aeroelasticity, caused by the interaction between transonic nonlinear fluid and geometrically nonlinear structure, is studied by coupling solution of the two fields. A predictor-corrector procedure with an approximately energy conservation is developed to obtain nonlinear structure response. Finite volume method with dual-time implicit technology is utilized to solve Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equation to achieve nonlinear unsteady aerodynamic load. The two solvers are coupled by a second order time marching scheme. With the application on a flexible wing for nonlinear aeroelastic response computation, the improved procedure presents a better stability and capacity than conventional method.

Abstract:Computational structural dynamics (CSD) and Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) referring to aeroelasticity are highly nonlinear problems in time domain. Euler equation is solved by finite volume method with dual-time technology to obtain nonlinear unsteady aerodynamic load; the finite element co-rotational theory is applied to model geometric nonlinear structure, and an approximate energy conservation algorithm is developed to achieve nonlinear dynamic response; combined with interface technique, which involves conservation volume transformation and second order time loosely coupled algorithm, an improved CFD/CSD coupled system is designed to solver nonlinear aeroelasticity, Then, the developed algorithm is performed on aeroelastic response of NACA 0012 airfoil, the results illustrate that the improved algorithm has superior accuracy and efficiency compared with conventional method. ©2009 IEEE.
