Abstract:In this paper, we describe and analyze a new two-step frequency estimation algorithm for pilot symbol assisted modulation (PSAM) systems with a non-uniform pilot pattern. The burst structure includes some consecutive pilots at the beginning of each burst and some sparse ones over the burst. Compared with the FFT-based (Fast Fourier Transform based) algorithm, its computational complexity is reduced greatly. It facilitates the estimation of large frequency offsets and high accuracy. Its estimation range is about plusmn20% of the symbol rate and its accuracy is close to the Cramer-Rao bound (CRB) for a low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR).

Abstract:In this paper, asynchronous complex histogram (ACH)-based multi-task artificial neural networks (MT-ANNs), are proposed to realize modulation format identification (MFI), optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) estimation and fiber nonlinear (NL) noise power estimation simultaneously for coherent optical communication. Optical performance monitoring (OPM) is demonstrated with polarization mode multiplexing (PDM), 16 quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM), PDM-32QAM, as well as PDM-star 16QAM (S-16QAM) for the first time. The range of launched power is −3 to −2 dBm with a fiber link of 160–1600 km. Then, the accuracy of MFI reaches 100%. The average root mean square error (RMSE) of OSNR estimation can reach 0.37 dB. The average RMSE of NL noise power estimation can reach 0.25 dB. The results show that the monitoring scheme is robust to the increase of fiber length, and the solution can monitor more optical network parameters with better performance and fewer training data, simultaneously. The proposed ACH MT-ANN has certain reference significance for the future long-haul coherent OPM system.

Abstract:A new behavioral model of nonlinear RF power amplifiers (PA) is presented to treat memory effects. The key issue here is considering the phenomenon that uplink quadrature modulation signals are influenced not only by the current uplink signals, but also by previous terms. The variation of AM/AM and AM/PM, and the asymmetries in lower and upper intermodulation terms are frequently observed in high-power PAs. To treat these phenomena, this paper proposes a model based on artificial neural network. The contribution made of this model is to solve the order determination issue (determining the order of the previous output and input signals that have influence on the current output signal). In addition, the recognized difficulty of long training process is overcome by using SDBCC algorithm, a novel neural network design method combining structure decomposition and the Cascade-Correlation neural network algorithm. The required maximum delay is established by examining the autocorrelation coefficient of the residual error. Ensemble system is finally used to improve the performance further. This proposed method is successfully validated in nonlinear modeling of the RF PAs from HuaWei Company, including 8000 samples.

Abstract:This letter investigates secrecy performance for cognitive transmissions, where a secondary user (SU) shares same spectrum with a primary user (PU) simultaneously ensuring the quality-of-service (QoS) of primary transmissions. Additionally, an eavesdropper (Eve) overhears cognitive transmissions from SU to base station (BS). To against eavesdropping attacks, a novel artificial noise-aided rate splitting (ANRS) scheme is proposed, where PU emits artificial noise to confuse Eve and SU adopts rate splitting (RS). The numerical results of secrecy outage probability indicates that the ANRS scheme achieves better secrecy performance than that of AN without RS (ANWRS) and of RS without AN (RSWAN) schemes.

Abstract:A masked autoencoder‐based multi‐scale attention feature fusion model (MAE‐SigNet) is proposed. MAE‐SigNet exhibits outstanding performance at various levels of low signal‐to‐noise ratios from −6 to 4 dB. The rapid development of the Internet of Things has exacerbated issues such as spectrum resource scarcity, poor communication quality, and high communication energy consumption. Automatic modulation recognition (AMR), a key technology in cognitive radio, has emerged as a crucial solution to these challenges. Deep neural networks have been recently applied in AMR tasks and have achieved remarkable success. However, existing deep learning‐based AMR methods often need to consider the sensitivity of models to noise fully. This study proposes a masked autoencoder multi‐scale attention feature fusion model (MAE‐SigNet). This model integrates a MAE, multi‐scale feature extraction module, bidirectional long short‐term memory module, and MAM to accomplish the AMR task under low signal‐to‐noise ratio. Additionally, we optimize the cross‐entropy loss of the MAE‐SigNet model by introducing MAE decoder reconstruction error, which enhances the model's sensitivity to noise while achieving more accurate feature representation. Experimental results demonstrate that the MAE‐SigNet model achieves average recognition rates of 63.77%, 65.28%, and 75.26% on the RML2016.10a, RML2016.10b, and RML2016.04c datasets. Mainly, MAE‐SigNet exhibits outstanding performance at various levels of low signal‐to‐noise ratios from −6 to 4 dB.

Abstract:We propose an artificial neural network (ANN)-based scheme to improve the performance of nonlinear frequency division multiplexing (NFDM) optical transmission systems in both time and frequency domain. Through two-stage ANN equalization at the receiver side, time-domain distortions between adjacent bursts and frequency-domain cross talk between neighboring subcarriers can be jointly mitigated. Burst ANN and Subcarrier ANN equalizers are characterized and validated by numerical simulations of a dual-polarization NFDM transmission system. Compared with the basic detection scheme, the proposed two-stage ANN achieves a Q-factor gain of 3.01 dB for an NFDM system with 256 Gb/s gross data rate transmitting over 960 km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF). The two-stage ANN approach offers an effective way to jointly equalize the signal in multiple dimensions.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate the use of deep neural networks (DNNs) in combination with signals' amplitude histograms (AHs) for simultaneous optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) monitoring and modulation format identification (MFI) in digital coherent receivers. The proposed technique automatically extracts OSNR and modulation format dependent features of AHs, obtained after constant modulus algorithm (CMA) equalization, and exploits them for the joint estimation of these parameters. Experimental results for 112 Gbps polarization-multiplexed (PM) quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK), 112 Gbps PM 16 quadrature amplitude modulation (16-QAM), and 240 Gbps PM 64-QAM signals demonstrate OSNR monitoring with mean estimation errors of 1.2 dB, 0.4 dB, and 1 dB, respectively. Similarly, the results for MFI show 100% identification accuracy for all three modulation formats. The proposed technique applies deep machine learning algorithms inside standard digital coherent receiver and does not require any additional hardware. Therefore, it is attractive for cost-effective multi-parameter estimation in next-generation elastic optical networks (EONs).

Abstract:When communicating in aeronautical wireless channels, the difficulty of radio modulation recognition increases due to the loss of information caused by noise; particularly in circumstances with low signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs), it is difficult to achieve recognition rates exceeding 90.0%. To improve the radio modulation recognition performances of networks at low SNRs in complex electromagnetic environments, a modulation recognition method based on multidimensional feature analysis is proposed in this paper. It is realized through a cascaded structure including a Deep Cross Network (DCN) and an improved Visual Geometry Group Network 16 (VGG16). Our network framework is divided into two modules. In the one-dimensional data analysis module, we take the high-order cumulant of a transmitted signal as the one-dimensional feature input of the DCN. In the two-dimensional data analysis module, the color constellation density of the signal is extracted as the feature map input of the improved VGG16. Finally, we build a cascaded neural network with hybrid feature inputs for modulation recognition. Experimental results show that the recognition rate of our method is higher than 90.0% at an SNR of −4 dB. Compared with other methods, the proposed method has better recognition performance at low SNRs in aeronautical wireless channels.

Abstract:Filter Bank MultiCarrier with Offset Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (FBMC-OQAM) has been intensively studied, and becomes a very potential candidate in future wireless communication system because of its numerous advantages. This paper presents a framework of Artifical Neural Network (ANN)-aided receiver design for the FBMC system. Specifically, two new joint channel estimation and equalization architectures are developed, which are based on two classical ANN algorithms, Multi-layer Perceptron (MLP) and Functinal Link Artificial Neural Network (FLANN). In addition, a powerful Loss Function (LF) is proposed by combining intrinsic characteristics of FBMC and is applied in the ANN-aided FBMC receiver. Numerical results validate the effectiveness of the proposed ANN-aided design and demonstrate its remarkable bit-error-ratio (BER) performance under multi-path channel environment. Furthermore, the performance advantage of the proposed LF is also confirmed by simulations.

Abstract:Signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) estimation plays an important role to adaptive modulation in Evolved Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Services (eMBMS). Based on the knowledge that the received signal space consists of signal subspace and noise subspace, we propose a subspace-based SNR estimation solution to cope with the time-varying channel with frequency selective effect and different OFDM pilot structure situations in eMBMS. The simulation is carried out on both PC and Aeroflex PXI platform. Simulation results show this proposed method gives good performance with different eMBMS pilot length and time-varying channels.

Abstract:As a green and secure wireless transmission way, secure spatial modulation (SM) is becoming a hot research area. Its basic idea is to exploit both the index of activated transmit antenna and amplitude phase modulation (APM) signal to carry messages, improve security, and save energy. In this paper, we reviewed its crucial techniques: transmit antenna selection (TAS), artificial noise (AN) projection, power allocation (PA), and joint detection at desired receiver. To achieve the optimal performance of maximum likelihood (ML) detector, a deep-neural-network (DNN) joint detector is proposed to jointly infer the index of transmit antenna and signal constellation point with a lower-complexity. Here, each layer of DNN is redesigned to optimize the joint inference performance of two distinct types of information: transmit antenna index and signal constellation point. Simulation results show that the proposed DNN method performs 3dB better than the conventional DNN structure and is close to ML detection in the low and medium signal-to-noise ratio regions in terms of the bit error rate (BER) performance, but its complexity is far lower-complexity compared to ML. Finally, three key techniques TAS, PA, and AN projection at transmitter can be combined to make SM a true secure modulation.

Abstract:Automatic Modulation Recognition (AMR) is currently a research hotspot, and research under low Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) conditions still poses certain challenges. This paper proposes an AMR method based on phase transformation and deep residual shrinkage network to improve recognition accuracy. Firstly, the raw I/Q data from the benchmark dataset RML2016.10a are used as the input. Then, an end-to-end modulation recognition is performed using the model. Phase transformation is used to correct the raw I/Q data and reduce the interference of phase shift on modulation recognition. Convolutional neural network (CNN) and Gate Recurrent Unit (GRU) extract the spatial and temporal features of the modulation signal, respectively. The improved deep residual shrinkage network is added after CNN to eliminate unimportant features through soft thresholding. Finally, the proposed model is trained and tested. The experimental results show that the proposed model notably reduces the number of parameters compared to other models, effectively improving the recognition accuracy under low SNR conditions. The average recognition accuracy reaches 62.46%, and the highest recognition accuracy reaches 92.41%.

Abstract:In this paper, we experimentally propose a feasible and low spatial complexity adaptive artificial neural network (AANN) post-equalization algorithm in MIMO visible light communication (VLC) systems. By introducing the power ratio and the MIMO least mean square (MIMO-LMS) post-equalization algorithm into the structure design process of the artificial neural network (ANN) post-equalization algorithm, we reduced the spatial complexity of the post-ANN equalization algorithm to less than 10%. At the same time, the bit error rate (BER) performance of AANNs did not decrease. Finally, we achieved a data rate of 2.1Gbps in the AANN equalized 16QAM superposition coding modulation (SCM) and carrier-less amplitude-phase (CAP) single-receiver MIMO (SR-MIMO) VLC system.

Abstract:Accurate channel modeling is the foundation of communication system design. However, the traditional measurement-based modeling approach has increasing challenges for the scenarios with insufficient measurement data. To obtain enough data for channel modeling, the Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is used in this paper to predict channel data. The high mobility railway channel is considered, which is a typical scenario where it is challenging to obtain enough data for modeling within a short sampling interval. Three types of ANNs, the Back Propagation Network, Radial Basis Function Neural Network and Extreme Learning Machine, are considered to predict channel path loss and shadow fading. The Root-Mean-Square error is used to evaluate prediction accuracy. The factors that may influence prediction accuracy are compared and discussed, including the type of network, number of neurons and proportion of training data. It is found that a larger number of neurons can significantly reduce prediction error, whereas the influence of proportion of training data is relatively small. The results can be used to improve modeling accuracy of path loss and shadow fading when measurement data is reduced.

Abstract:The author presents pilot-symbol-assisted modulation (PSAM) on a solid analytical basis, a feature missing from previous work. Closed-form expressions are presented for the bit error rate (BER) in binary-phase-shift-keying (BPSK) and in quadrature-phase-shift-keying (QPSK), for a tight upper bound on the symbol error rate in 16 quadrature-amplitude-modulation (16-QAM), and for the optimized receiver coefficients. The error rates obtained are lower than for differential detection for any combination of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and Doppler spread, and the performance is within 1 dB of a perfect reference system under slow-fading conditions and within 3 dB when the Doppler spread is 5% of the symbol rate.<>

Abstract:In this paper, a novel artificial-noise strategy is proposed for single-antenna point-to-point systems over multi-path fading channels. Unlike existing artificial-noise schemes that are used in multi-antenna systems for the only purpose of confusing eavesdroppers, the main objectives of the artificial noise generated in the proposed strategy are not only to guarantee secure communications, but also to compensate inter-symbol interference induced by multi-path propagation while achieving full multi-path diversity in the desired link between source and legitimate destination. Based on maximal-ratio combining at the destination, the artificial noise herein is specified by the channel state information (CSI) of the desired link. Specifically for the time-division duplex mode, thanks to channel reciprocity, the CSI is available at the source to generate the artificial noise. However, third-party eavesdroppers that are blind to the CSI are not able to decode the source information injected with the artificial noise. Illustrative discussions on the performance not only substantiate the validity of the proposed strategy both in overcoming multi-path effects and for physical layer security, but also provide a useful tool for the frame design with the proposed strategy.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel method for extracting an RF pilot carrier signal in the coherent receiver is presented. The RF carrier is used to mitigate the phase noise influence in n-level PSK and QAM systems. The performance is compared to the use of an (ideal) optically transmitted RF pilot tone. As expected an electronically generated RF carrier provides less efficient phase noise mitigation than the optical RF. However, the electronically generated RF carrier still improves the phase noise tolerance by about one order of magnitude in bit error rate (BER) compared to using no RF pilot tone. It is also found, as a novel study result, that equalization enhanced phase noise--which appears as correlated pure phase noise, amplitude noise and time jitter-cannot be efficiently mitigated by the use of an (optically or electrically generated) RF pilot tone.
