Abstract:We propose a high spectral efficiency coherent optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing system utilizing a novel and almost blind phase noise compensation method. With the aid of pseudo pilots instead of pilots, laser phase noise can be suppressed effectively while the overhead of system is reduced successfully. Numerical results show that the performance of the proposed pseudo pilot-aided phase noise compensation scheme can approach that of the pilot-aided counterpart, yet achieve higher spectral efficiency even when the phase noise is severe.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel consecutive-pilot design is proposed to suppress phase noise (PHN) in orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) system. The estimation of PHN is performed by a cross-correlation between the received and locally generated pilots in frequency-domain. Simulations show that the proposed scheme can effectively ameliorate the impairment due to PHN, at the cost of acceptable additional transmission bandwidth and low implementation complexity.

Abstract:This paper derives a phase-noise suppression scheme for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. This scheme is a maximum likelihood approach that exploits the pilot subcarriers that exist in almost all practical OFDM systems. Compared with existing work, the proposed scheme has the following features: (a) we focus on phase-noise suppression for time-varying environments, which also cause intercarrier interference (ICI) along with phase noise. Most of the existing work considers quasi-static channels and tries to suppress the common phase error (CPE). As will be shown in this paper, in more realistic fast time-varying channels, the CPE term becomes much more complex and might significantly degrade the performance of estimators that assume a time-invariant channel, (b) the proposed algorithm is applicable for the two most common types of local oscillators: phase-locked and free-running, which have different phase-noise characteristics, (c) the proposed phase-noise suppression scheme does not require perfect channel equalization, whereas in some of the existing work the channel is assumed to be known a priori, and (d) doubly-selective fading is considered rather than assuming a time-invariant and/or flat-fading channel.

Abstract:In this letter, we develop an orthogonal basis expansion (OBE)-based phase noise suppression method for polarization-division-multiplexed (PDM) coherent optical orthogonal frequency-division-multiplexing (CO-OFDM) systems. Compared with the conventional phase noise suppression approach, the OBE method not only significantly promotes the system tolerance of laser phase noise, but also improves the system robustness against nonlinear phase noise. The theoretical analysis is validated by numerical simulations of PDM CO-OFDM systems with 16-quadrature-amplitude-modulation format.

Abstract:We propose a phase-noise compensation algorithm by using radio frequency pilot (RF-Pilot) method in combination with extend Kalman filter (EKF) in time domain for the coherent optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CO-OFDM) system with large linewidths and high-order circular quadrature amplitude modulation (C-QAM). We realize the coarse phase-noise compensation in time domain by setting a RF-Pilot at the receiver, and then complete the channel evaluation and channel balance. After accomplishing the initial pre-decision in the frequency domain, we use EKF to realize the final phase noise compensation, according to the judged temporal signal and the channel equalization temporal signal. We numerically verify the algorithm by transforming in a 50 Gb.s(-1) CO-OFDM system with 100 km transmission distance under C-16QAM and C-32QAM. The results show that compared with original RF-Pilot phase-noise compensation algorithms, the proposed method has better performance on the phase noise compensation while has no obvious decrease of frequency utilization, and the complexity is not increased significantly. For CO-OFDM systems with C-32QAM and a laser linewidth of 2.1 MHz, the bit error rate achieves the upper limit of forward error correction. It theoretically confirms that the proposed algorithm can improve the tolerance of laser linewidth on the CO-OFDM system. We can use the inexpensive distributed feedback lasers with relatively large linewidth as the source of the object and the oscillator of the receiver. The proposed phase-noise compensation algorithm is beneficial to the application of CO-OFDM system in long distance access network and metropolitan area network.

Abstract:Aiming at the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing(OFDM) system is sensitive to the phase noise,a suppression algorithm of phase noises in OFDM system based on interpolation combined with MMSE equalization is introduced.Before IFFT in the transmitter,interpolating the zero subcarriers into the symbol may reduce the inter carrier interference(ICI) effectively and improve the signal-to-interference(SIR) ratio.By using the MMSE equalization method,the common phase error(CPE) of the OFDM system caused by the phase noise can be eliminated.The simulation results show that the algorithm can eliminate the rotation of the constellation caused by CPE and suppress the cloud of divergence of the constellation caused by ICI.The phase noise of the OFDM system can be suppressed effectively over Gauss channel and multipath channel,so the proposed algorithm has low complexity and is good in practice.

Abstract:Previous studies have revealed the similarity between phase noise in the symbol domain of discrete Fourier transform spread (DFT-Spread) coherent orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CO-OFDM) systems and that in the time domain. This paper further details this characteristic through both formulas and simulation results, while also analyzing and summarizing its formation conditions and influencing factors. Based on this, a phase noise compensation (PNC) scheme based on DFT-Spread OFDM is proposed for high-order quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) transmission with large fast Fourier transform (FFT) sizes. The proposed scheme effectively suppresses inter-carrier interference (ICI) introduced by phase noise in OFDM systems, as verified through simulations of dual-polarization (DP) 64-QAM CO-OFDM transmission over 80 km single-mode fiber (SMF). This work suggests that proposed PNC scheme enhance the tolerance for laser linewidth in OFDM systems, and may offer a possible solution for short distance high-baud-rate high-order QAM coherent transmission.

Abstract:A low-complexity optical phase noise mitigation scheme, based on a radio frequency pilot (RFP) and partition phase correction (PPC), is proposed. For diverse channel configurations, an optimized RFP with fixed parameters is first employed in coarse phase tracking for generality purposes. Based on the reliable predecision results, we propose a noniterative PPC algorithm to further suppress the residual noise. Numerical simulations demonstrate that compared with other phase noise compensation algorithms, the proposed scheme has better robustness and lower computational complexity. In addition, the performance degradation caused by decision errors is also discussed, and a moderate partition length with small floating range can guarantee satisfactory correction quality. Abstract:One of the primary drawbacks of orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) is the large peak-to-average ratio (PAPR). It continues to contribute nonlinear degradations after it was introduced into optical fiber transmissions. However, phase-modulated OFDM can reduce the PAPR to the minimum, since its amplitude can be constant. In this paper, we conduct the theoretical and experimental study on the laser phase noise effect in phase-modulated coherent optical OFDM systems. Due to the laser phase noise, the phase transformation at the receiver is prone to errors due to phase wrapping. Consequently, we propose a mean-phase-compensation (MPC) method, which compensate for the mean phase offset for each OFDM symbol that has a Gaussian-distributed histogram. This method can avoid the problematic unwrapping function in phase transformation. We derive the closed-form expressions for the phase noise spreading and the corresponding signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) based on the Wiener phase noise model. Unlike conventional coherent optical OFDM, the phase noise spreading to each OFDM subcarrier is decided by the reciprocal of the square of the subcarrier frequency, and the SNR can be improved by using a stronger PM modulation. We also discuss the SNR improvement by discarding a few affected subcarriers closing to dc. In a simulation, we demonstrate that our closed-form expressions are accurate. Finally, we experimentally verify our MPC method and our analysis.

Abstract:High performance network over coax(HINOC) has become next-generation broadcasting network(NGB) industry standard of China, as well as International Telecommunication Union(ITU) telecommunication standard, which adopts orthogonal frequency division multiplexing(OFDM) technique and high order modulation formats. As is known, in OFDM system, phase noise destroys the orthogonality of the subcarriers and degrades the performance of the system especially when the data are transmitted in high order modulation formats. In this paper, we propose a high spectral efficiency OFDM system utilizing a novel and almost blind phase noise compensation method mainly used for high performance coaxial transmission. In our system, some subcarriers, which remain to transmit unknown useful data in lower order modulation formats, are selected as pseudo pilots instead of pilots to suppress phase noise effectively and high spectral efficiency can be achieved with the aid of puncturing mechanisms. Simulation results show that the proposed pseudo pilot-aided OFDM system can achieve the performance of the pilot-aided counterpart yet acquiring higher spectral efficiency.

Abstract:Aiming at the multi-carrier filter bank transmission system for coherent optical offset quadrature amplitude modulation (CO-FBMC/OQAM) technique, a pilot-based time-domain phase noise compensation algorithm is proposed. A time-domain phase noise compensation model is established, that is, phase noise is approximated by time-domain extended discrete cosine transform (DCT). Phase noise includes common phase error (CPE) and non-CPE phase noise, which can be obtained by estimating DCT coefficients. In order to calculate these DCT coefficients, the CPE is estimated by pilot-based extended Kalman filter (EKF). Then, some of the data with high error probability after CPE compensation arc discarded, and only the remaining CPE compensation data are retained for pre-decision to predict the sender data. Finally, the proposed algorithm is simulated and verified in a back-to-back CO-FBMC/OQAM system with a baud rate of 32 GBaud. The results show that compared with an improved phase search (M-BPS) algorithm, the spectral efficiency of the proposed algorithm decreases by 0.5%-2.0%. For 61-order QAM systems with subcarriers M=256 or 512, the linewidth delay product tolerance of the proposed algorithm is still much larger than that of the M-BPS algorithm, but its complexity is only half that of the M-BPS algorithm.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the basic phase estimation compensation methods based on pilot in CO-OFDM system. Two types of phase estimation ways are briefly introduced among them. Finally, a compensation method combining the two characteristics is proposed and a relatively better effect is obtained. Under the non-blind estimation based on pilot frequency, the maximum compensation of CPE phase noise of CO-OFDM system is obtained as far as possible. On the basis of pilot assisted, the phase noise compensation of the system can be maximized without considering ICI by combining two simple and practical phase estimation methods. Compared with other non-blind estimation algorithms, this algorithm is simpler, easier to implement and more effective.

Abstract:Schemes integrating inter-carrier interference (ICI) self-cancellation and common phase error (CPE) compensation for coherent optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CO-OFDM) systems are investigated. The purpose of our research is to counteract the impacts of laser phase noise and fiber nonlinearity. We propose two ICI self-cancellation-based CO-OFDM schemes, and adopt a pilot-aided decision feedback (DFB) loop for CPE compensation. The proposed schemes are compared with conventional CO-OFDM schemes at the same spectral efficiency. Simulations show that our schemes can not only enhance laser linewidth tolerance of the CO-OFDM system, but also present strong robustness against fiber nonlinearity.

Abstract:In this paper, a pilot-based blind (PBB) phase estimation method for coherent optical orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (CO-OFDM) is proposed. Instead of inserting the pilot-subcarriers that are loaded with the already known information in the OFDM signal, the unknown and specially designed signal is used to replace the signal on the pilot subcarriers to decrease the waste of spectrum and also demonstrated well performance for the phase noise compensation. Both the proposed PBB and conventional pilot-aided (PA) estimation methods are demonstrated in a CO-OFDM transmission experiment, which is modulated by 4 quadrature amplitude modulation (4-QAM) format and transmitted over 1760-km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF). The experimental results show that the proposed PBB method still achieves the similar performance to that of the conventional PA method.
