Abstract:In order to further improve the laser phase noise tolerance of coherent optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CO-OFDM) systems, an iterative phase noise suppression algorithm is proposed in this paper, which is powerful in mitigating the laser phase noise induced intercarrier interference (ICI) even when laser linewidth achieves 2 MHz. Compared with the existing ICI suppression method, the performance gain brought by the proposal is significant when the laser linewidth is larger than 1.5 MHz. The BER floor which can not be avoided by using the existing phase noise suppression methods can be reduced effectively by employing the new iterative algorithm.

Abstract:Polarization-division multiplexed coherent optical orthogonal frequency multiplexing ( PDM-CO-OFDM) is an important physical layer technology for high spectrum efficiency optical network.But PDM-CO-OFDM is very sensitive to optical phase noise.In PDM-CO-OFDM system with a large symbol period-laser linewidth product, the system's performance is severally degraded by the optical phase noise induced inter-carrier-interference ( ICI) .The PDM-CO-OFDM system employing advanced modulation format ( e.g.16QAM) becomes more sensitive to optical phase noise when increasing the modulation format order.To mitigate the optical phase noise in above systems, a novel algorithm, P-LI-SCPEC is proposed, which employs linear interpolation, phase passing and symbol slicing. The mathematical model of the proposed algorithm is developed.Mentor-Carol simulation has been conducted based on the model.By comparing with several other optical phase suppression algorithms including our previously pro-posed algorithm LI-SCPEC, the proposed algorithm achieves better performance in suppressing the optical phase noise, and thus improves the system's tolerance to laser linewidth.The new algorithm will promote the application of PDM-CO-OFDM both in the optical access network using low cost laser, and in the optical back-bone network with high order modulation format.

Abstract:In this letter, we develop an orthogonal basis expansion (OBE)-based phase noise suppression method for polarization-division-multiplexed (PDM) coherent optical orthogonal frequency-division-multiplexing (CO-OFDM) systems. Compared with the conventional phase noise suppression approach, the OBE method not only significantly promotes the system tolerance of laser phase noise, but also improves the system robustness against nonlinear phase noise. The theoretical analysis is validated by numerical simulations of PDM CO-OFDM systems with 16-quadrature-amplitude-modulation format.

Abstract:A low-complexity optical phase noise suppression approach based on recursive principal components elimination, R-PCE, is proposed and theoretically derived for CO-OFDM systems. Through frequency domain principal components estimation and elimination, signal distortion caused by optical phase noise is mitigated by R-PCE. Since matrix inversion and domain transformation are completely avoided, compared with the case of the orthogonal basis expansion algorithm (L = 3) that offers a similar laser linewidth tolerance, the computational complexities of multiple principal components estimation are drastically reduced in the R-PCE by factors of about 7 and 5 for q = 3 and 4, respectively. The feasibility of optical phase noise suppression with the R-PCE and its decision-aided version (DA-R-PCE) in the QPSK/16QAM CO-OFDM system are demonstrated by Monte-Carlo simulations, which verify that R-PCE with only a few number of principal components q ( = 3) provides a significantly larger laser linewidth tolerance than conventional algorithms, including the common phase error compensation algorithm and linear interpolation algorithm. Numerical results show that the optimal performance of R-PCE and DA-R-PCE can be achieved with a moderate q, which is beneficial for low-complexity hardware implementation.

Abstract:In this paper, as an attractive alternative to the conventional discrete Fourier transform (DFT) based orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), discrete cosine transform (DCT) based OFDM which has certain advantages over its counterpart is studied for optical fiber communications. As is known, laser phase noise is a major impairment to the performance of coherent optical OFDM (CO-OFDM) systems. However, to our knowledge, detailed analysis of phase noise and the corresponding mitigation methods for DCT-based CO-OFDM systems have not been reported yet. To address these issues, we analyze the laser phase noise in the DCT-based CO-OFDM systems, and propose phase noise estimation and mitigation schemes. Numerical results show that the proposal is very effective in suppressing phase noise and could significantly improve the performance of DCT-based CO-OFDM systems.

Abstract:One major disadvantage of OFDM is its high sensitivity to phase noise introduced by local oscillators. Although several algorithms have been addressed in the literature to mitigate the effects of phase noise, there are two unsolvable problems for the current study of phase noise suppression that the CPE correction algorithms are based on the perfect channel state information and the ICI suppression methods perform poorly or will reduce the spectral efficiency in some cases. In this paper, we propose two novel algorithms for phase noise suppression. The proposed methods can effectively suppress CPE and ICI using the sparse property of channel impulse response (CIR) without the prior knowledge of CIR and the spectrum expenses.

Abstract:In Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing ( OFDM ) systems. the local oscillator phase noise introduces two effects ; common phase error ( CPE) and inter-carrier interference (ICI). The correction of only CPE does not suffice always, especially when high data rates are required. Based on the analysis of phase noise process and its effects on OFDM, a new method of ICI reduction is proposed in this paper. Several phase-noise estimation pilots are inserted in OFDM frames and at the receiver end phase noise is estimated using LS method according to the disturbed pilots. Phase noise suppression is also investigated. Finally, simulation results are shown to demonstrate the effectiveness of the algorithm.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a novel Gaussian wavelet basis expansion-based phase noise suppression scheme for polarization-division-multiplexing (PDM) coherent optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CO-OFDM) superchannel. We analyze the phase noise suppression principle of Gaussian wavelet basis expansion (GWBE) and experimentally demonstrated it in 400-Gb/s optical PDM-QPSK-OFDM superchannel. Compared with the traditional common phase error (CPE) suppression scheme, a Q-factor improvement of about 1.5~3.2 dB is achieved when the number of the pilots ranges from 16 to 80. Meanwhile, we evaluate the nonlinear phase noise suppression ability by adjusting the launched power into 160 km standard single mode fiber (SSMF). The results show that the proposed GWBE scheme is obviously superior to CPE and orthogonal basis expansion (OBE) in different nonlinear phase noise scenarios. Furtherly, we extend the GWBE scheme to 800 Gb/s PDM-16QAM-OFDM superchannel. The GWBE scheme can enhance the BER performance from 1.92 E-03 to 5.87 E-04 when the number of pilots is 48.

Abstract:An optical phase noise suppression algorithm, LI-SCPEC, based on phase linear interpolation and sub-symbol processing is proposed for CO-OFDM system. By increasing the temporal resolution of carrier phase tracking through dividing one symbol into several sub-blocks, i.e., sub-symbols, inter-carrier-interference (ICI) mitigation is achieved in the proposed algorithm. Linear interpolation is employed to obtain a reliable temporal reference for sub-symbol phase estimation. The new algorithm, with only a few number of sub-symbols (N-B = 4), can provide a considerably larger laser linewidth tolerance than several other ICI mitigation algorithms as demonstrated by Monte-Carlo simulations. Numerical analysis verifies that the best performance is achieved with an optimal and moderate number of sub-symbols. Complexity analysis shows that the required number of complex-valued multiplications is independent of the number of sub-symbols used in the proposed algorithm. (C) 2015 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Spatial division multiplexed (SDM) transmission systems with coherence communication technology have become an important issue in meeting the demands for the capacity of fiber. However, research on the phase noise from lasers is mainly focused on single-channel systems or single-carrier SDM systems. In this paper, a phase noise model comprising common laser phase noise, in addition to the core phase drifts induced by the SDM, is introduced and analyzed for a coherence orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (CO-OFDM) spatial-division multiplexed transmission (SDM) system. Based on the phase noise model, the applicability of the blind phase search algorithm and the pilot-aided phase estimation algorithm is discussed and demonstrated via simulation. The results show that these two algorithms can work well when considering combined laser linewidths with core phase drifts for CO-OFDM 7-core multi-core fiber (MCF). The results mean that with the SDM phase noise model, phase noise estimation in other cores can be transferred from one core to lower the complexity with the help of the model. This research provides a proper application of the phase noise analysis of large-capacity optical communication based on a weak-coupled MCF.

Abstract:Previous studies have revealed the similarity between phase noise in the symbol domain of discrete Fourier transform spread (DFT-Spread) coherent orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CO-OFDM) systems and that in the time domain. This paper further details this characteristic through both formulas and simulation results, while also analyzing and summarizing its formation conditions and influencing factors. Based on this, a phase noise compensation (PNC) scheme based on DFT-Spread OFDM is proposed for high-order quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) transmission with large fast Fourier transform (FFT) sizes. The proposed scheme effectively suppresses inter-carrier interference (ICI) introduced by phase noise in OFDM systems, as verified through simulations of dual-polarization (DP) 64-QAM CO-OFDM transmission over 80 km single-mode fiber (SMF). This work suggests that proposed PNC scheme enhance the tolerance for laser linewidth in OFDM systems, and may offer a possible solution for short distance high-baud-rate high-order QAM coherent transmission.

Abstract:A unified framework for phase noise suppression is proposed in this paper, which could be applied in any coherent optical block transmission systems, including coherent optical orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (CO-OFDM), coherent optical single-carrier frequency-domain equalization block transmission (CO-SCFDE), etc. Based on adaptive modeling of phase noise, unified observation equations for different coherent optical block transmission systems are constructed, which lead to unified phase noise estimation and suppression. Abstract:Aiming at the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing(OFDM) system is sensitive to the phase noise,a suppression algorithm of phase noises in OFDM system based on interpolation combined with MMSE equalization is introduced.Before IFFT in the transmitter,interpolating the zero subcarriers into the symbol may reduce the inter carrier interference(ICI) effectively and improve the signal-to-interference(SIR) ratio.By using the MMSE equalization method,the common phase error(CPE) of the OFDM system caused by the phase noise can be eliminated.The simulation results show that the algorithm can eliminate the rotation of the constellation caused by CPE and suppress the cloud of divergence of the constellation caused by ICI.The phase noise of the OFDM system can be suppressed effectively over Gauss channel and multipath channel,so the proposed algorithm has low complexity and is good in practice.

Abstract:Recently, dynamic optical network has attracted wide concern for its high efficiency and flexible configurations. Known for high spectral efficiency and flexible allocations of frequency resources orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing offset-quadrature amplitude modulation (OFDM/OQAM) is a promising scheme for future dynamic networks. Phase noise estimation (PNE) and compensation are key technologies for maintaining the performance of coherent optical OFDM/OQAM system. In this paper, a simplified phase noise (PN) model for OFDM/OQAM under channel effect is deduced according to distribution feature of intrinsic interference. Some blind PNE methods are studied and their specific implementation process for OFDM/OQAM are presented. Based on PN model and Kalman filter theory, we propose a new adaptive extended Kalman filter (AEKF) blind scheme to meet the demand of flexibility in dynamic networks. Numerical results show that AEKF can adjust the implementation complexity of PNE according to the varying laser linewidth. When the commercial laser linewidth is 200 kHz, its time complexity is only 1/3 of that of modified blind phase search with feedback loop. Besides, AEKF can achieve a stable and reliable PNE performance under varying subcarrier allocation. AEKF can achieve a stable normalized linewidth tolerance over $1.5\times 10^{-3}$ under different subcarrier allocations.

Abstract:The dispersion-induced phase noise (PN) in an OFDM RoF system at 60 GHz leads to not only subcarrier phase rotation (PRT) but also intercarrier interference (ICI) to severely degrade the transmission performance, when a commercial cost-effective DFB laser with the linewidth of several MHz is adopted. To mitigate both PRT and ICI, a post PN suppression algorithm is proposed, and it does not require any bandwidth-consuming pilot tone. For a 25.78-Gbps 16-QAM OFDM RoF signal using the laser with 1.8-MHz linewidth, employing the algorithm can extend the maximum transmission distance which corresponds to 3-dBm power penalty at the BER of 2 × 10(-3) from 75 km to more than 115 km, i.e. 50% increment of transmission distance.
