Abstract:A joint and robust optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) and modulation format monitoring scheme using an artificial neural network (ANN) is proposed and demonstrated via both numerical simulations and experiments. Before ANN, the power iteration method in Stoke space is employed to estimate the phase difference between two orthogonal polarizations caused by fiber birefringence. Then, a three layers ANN is employed to approximate the relationship between the cumulative distribution function of a single Stokes parameter (S2) and the targeted OSNR and format information. The simulation results show that the probability of OSNR estimation error within 1dB in the proposed scheme is 100%, 99.78%, 100%, 99.78% and 98.89% for 28GS/s QPSK, 8PSK, 8QAM, 16QAM and 64QAM, respectively. Meanwhile, the proposed scheme also shows high modulation format identification accuracy in the presence of nonlinear Kerr effect and residual chromatic dispersion. With 1 dB OSNR estimation error, the proposed scheme can tolerate the residual chromatic dispersion and phase-related polarization rotation rate up to 100ps/nm and 50kHz, respectively. The experimental results also further confirm that the proposed scheme shows high modulation identification accuracy for 28GS/s QPSK, 8PSK and 16QAM under the scenarios of both back-to-back and fiber transmission. Meanwhile, with the launched power of 0dBm, the mean OSNR estimation error in our scheme is smaller than 1 dB within ±160ps/nm residual chromatic dispersion after fiber transmission.

Abstract:A variety of novel orbital angular momentum (OAM)-based communication or sensing systems have attracted much attention over the past decade, the superiority is brought about by nothing other than its orthogonality or vorticity. Plane spiral OAM (PSOAM) mode-group (MG) technique as a reconfigurable beamforming method can be used for building a multiple-in-multiple-out (MIMO) system to achieve the reduction in subchannel correlation, which benefits from the spiral phase distribution within the mainlobe. However, the demultiplexing process still depends on the MIMO algorithm, in which the receiver complexity is same as the conventional MIMO systems. In this article, a PSOAM MG orthogonal multiplexing communication link at the X-band using partial arc sampling receiving (PASR) scheme has been demonstrated experimentally. The MG channels have a good isolation of about 15 dB, and the existing performance can ensure the reliable 16-QAM wireless transmission. Besides, a real-time dual-channel video transmission experiment has been carried out to verify the channel isolation caused by MG’s orthogonality intuitively. More importantly, the demultiplexing procedure using the PASR scheme can be implemented by simple analog phase shifting operation with a lower receiver complexity compared with the conventional MIMO systems.

Abstract:We investigate and compare the performance of normal and probabilistic shaping (PS) 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (16QAM) in a photonic vector millimeter-wave (mm-wave) signal generation system adopting heterodyne coherent detection. And we obtain a better bit-error ratio (BER) performance in the PS 16QAM scheme compared to the normal 16QAM scheme in the simulation. We also for the first time experimentally demonstrate the feasibility of PS-polarization-division-multiplexing 16QAM in a photonic vector mm-wave signal generation system employing heterodyne coherent detection. We obtain the same BER in PS and normal schemes with the PS scheme providing a higher bit rate. Then we experimentally carry out the performance investigation of PS in a 16QAM-modulated radio over fiber system with 40 m wireless transmission. (C) 2017 Author(s).

Abstract:We used a hybrid probabilistic geometric shaping scheme that uses a probabilistic shaping method with labels and a pairwise optimization (PO) algorithm to transmit signals in a 2× 2 MIMO Photon-assisted millimeter wave (MMW) radio-over-fiber (RoF) system in the D-band. This scheme has low complexity and a simple recovery method. This scheme optimizes 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (16QAM) to probabilistically shaped 9-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (PS-9QAM) by adding labels, and optimizes it to hybrid probabilistically and geometrically shaped 9-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (PGS-9QAM) by geometric shaping using the PO algorithm. The experimental results prove the optimization effect of this scheme. Under the bit error rate threshold of 0.0038, when the net bit rate is the same, compared with 16QAM, PS-9QAM and PGS-9QAM, the optical power at the transmitter can be reduced by 0.8dB and 1.45dB respectively. When the transmission power is the same, compared with 16QAM, the net rates of PS-9QAM and PGS-9QAM can be increased by 7.5Gbit/s and 9Gbit/s respectively.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate a novel physical layer secure (PLS) potential technique which is summarized into a category of index modulation (IM) scheme, namely the spatial field digital modulation (SFDM). In an SFDM communication system, bit streams are modulated in the spatial distribution of electromagnetic (EM) field. Orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode groups can be utilized for beamforming and thus realize an OAM based SFDM (OAM-SFDM) system. This kind of IM systems that utilize the distribution of EM field to transmit information can radiate different signals to different directions and possess inherent anti-eavesdropping capability. Since an eavesdropper lacks prior knowledge, it is difficult to construct appropriate and effective estimators for signal demodulation. However, such system is vulnerable when potential eavesdroppers adopt clustering algorithm, a type of non-realtime demodulation. We propose two PLS strategies with different computational complexity, the power hopping (PH) method and the symbol variation (SV) method, to confront single-antenna eavesdroppers and multi-antenna eavesdroppers, respectively. Both approaches are key-free, and do not require any prior channel state information (CSI) about eavesdroppers. The mentioned methods could constantly disrupt the statistical properties of eavesdroppers’ channels and even their received signals. Theoretical analysis and numerical simulations have been conducted to validate the feasibility of these two schemes. Furthermore, a prototype of OAM-SFDM based PLS communication system is built in a realistic scenario. The experimental results demonstrate that both PH method and SV method can effectively resist clustering algorithm in their corresponding application scenarios.

Abstract:A joint and accurate optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) estimation and modulation formats identification (MFI) scheme based on the artificial neural network (ANN) is proposed and demonstrated via both simulation and the experiment system. The proposed scheme employs ANN to estimate OSNR and modulation formats from the OSNR and modulation formats dependent features, kurtosis, and amplitude variance. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme can achieve high OSNR estimation and MFI accuracy over wide OSNR ranges for the commonly used modulation formats such as QPSK, 8 quadratic-amplitude modulation (QAM), 16QAM, and 64QAM. Meanwhile, experimental results also indicate that the mean OSNR estimation errors are 0.15 dB, 0.41 dB, and 0.49 dB for QPSK, 8QAM, and 16QAM over wide ranges OSNR of 10-17 dB, 14-20 dB, and 17-25 dB, respectively. Additionally, 100% MFI accuracy for the commonly used modulation formats in our scheme is also confirmed experimentally. Compared with the convolutional neural network and the deep neural network, the proposed scheme shows comparable estimation and identification performance, and needs less computational resource. Therefore, our scheme can be considered an attractive technique for joint OSNR estimation and MFI in future reconfigurable optical networks.

Abstract:Probabilistic shaping (PS) combined with amplitude shift keying modulation is a spectrally efficient transmission scheme. To exploit the shaping gain in fading channels, we design a rotated quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) based PS strategy. With discrete inputs, we first derive the ergodic constellation constrained (CC) capacity, which is found to be mutually influenced by both the probability mass function (PMF) and the rotation angle (RA) of input signals. Correspondingly, the optimal PMF and RA for maximizing the ergodic CC capacity are attained by the alternative optimization method. Furthermore, based on this non-equiprobable transmission scheme, the closed-form pairwise error probability is obtained for the first time. Finally, compared with the uniform scheme with elaborate rotation, the proposed PS strategy shows more than 1 dB gain in terms of both the efficiency and the error performance.

Abstract:A shaping distribution identification method using digital frequency offset loading is proposed for probabilistically shaped M-quadrature amplitude modulation (PS-MQAM) optical wireless communication systems. The shaping distribution is encoded as four-bit information of digital frequency offset, which can be estimated by QPSK-selection assisted fast-Fourier-transform. Numerical results validate the scheme on eight PS-MQAM signals under various signal-to-noise ratios and suggest that the proposed scheme has a good performance using only a small number of QAM symbols.

Abstract:While most existing artificial noise techniques cannot be applied to single antenna systems, in this paper, we consider the physical layer security of an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) relay system with an eavesdropper where each node is equipped with a single antenna. A general time-domain artificial noise (AN) scheme is proposed, where the source transmits signals bearing with time-domain AN to the relay while the destination sends jamming signals to the relay. The time-domain AN is designed for the source and the destination in this paper. The power allocation between the source signal and the ANs is optimized to maximize the secrecy rate. However, the optimization problem is non-convex. To solve the non-convex maximization problem, we propose an iterative inner convex approximation algorithm, which transforms the original problem into a sequence of convex approximated problems. Simulation results are provided to investigated the performance of the proposed scheme.

Abstract:Probabilistic shaping (PS) combined with bipolar amplitude shift keying modulation is a promising transmission scheme. However, such 1-dimensional PS scheme inevitably suffers shaping loss in Rayleigh fading channels due to the lack of signal diversity. In this paper, we design a rotated quadrature amplitude modulation based PS strategy. With the discrete inputs, the ergodic constellation constrained (CC) capacity is derived based on the mutual information conditioned on full channel state information available at the receiver, which is found to be mutually influenced by both the probability mass function (PMF) and the rotation angle (RA) of the input signals. Furthermore, the closed-form cutoff rate is also derived to simplify the analysis, which is the lower bound of the mutual information with finite decoding complexity. Correspondingly, the optimizations of RA and PMF are both considered for maximizing the ergodic CC capacity and the cutoff rate, respectively, where the single parameter RA is firstly obtained by the exhaustive search. And then, the optimal PMFs of the subproblem for the fixed RAs and the fixed constellation scaling factor are obtained. Furthermore, with this non-equiprobable transmission scheme, the closed-form pairwise error probability is derived for the first time, which also validates the superiority of the proposed PS scheme in comparison with the uniform schemes with elaborate rotations.

Abstract:Filter Bank MultiCarrier with Offset Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (FBMC-OQAM) has been intensively studied, and becomes a very potential candidate in future wireless communication system because of its numerous advantages. This paper presents a framework of Artifical Neural Network (ANN)-aided receiver design for the FBMC system. Specifically, two new joint channel estimation and equalization architectures are developed, which are based on two classical ANN algorithms, Multi-layer Perceptron (MLP) and Functinal Link Artificial Neural Network (FLANN). In addition, a powerful Loss Function (LF) is proposed by combining intrinsic characteristics of FBMC and is applied in the ANN-aided FBMC receiver. Numerical results validate the effectiveness of the proposed ANN-aided design and demonstrate its remarkable bit-error-ratio (BER) performance under multi-path channel environment. Furthermore, the performance advantage of the proposed LF is also confirmed by simulations.

Abstract:Offset spatial modulation orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OSM-OFDM) is demonstrated to offer a simple radio frequency (RF) switching structure with comparable bit error rate (BER) performance to conventional SM-OFDM. However, the OSM-OFDM waveform inherits the large peakto-average power ratio (PAPR) of original OFDM, and suffers performance loss in terms of BER due to the nonlinear noise from high power amplifier (HPA). As a class of efficient PAPR reduction techniques, the BER performance of clipping-aided OSM-OFDM is first evaluated through theoretical analysis. Furthermore, in this contribution, we conceive a new antenna offset structure as grouped OSM-OFDM toward low PAPR, while its upper BER bound is quantified through theoretical analysis. Through simulation results, we demonstrate that compared to the original OSM-OFDM, both grouped OSM-OFDM and clipped OSM-OFDM are capable of striking a better balance between PAPR and BER performance, while the former one is without extra computational complexity and the later one needs distortion recovery at the receiver side.

Abstract:The artificial noise (AN) aided multi-beam directional modulation (DM) technology is capable of wireless physical layer secure (PLS) transmissions for multiple desired receivers in free space. The application of AN, however, makes it less power-efficient for such a DM system. To address this problem, the weighted fractional Fourier transform (WFRFT) technology is employed in this paper to achieve power-efficient multi-beam DM transmissions. Specifically, a power-efficient multi-beam WFRFT-DM scheme with cooperative receivers and a power-efficient multi-beam WFRFT-DM scheme with independent receivers are proposed based on frequency diverse array (FDA), respectively. The bit error rate (BER), secrecy rate, and robustness of the proposed multi-beam WFRFT-DM schemes are analyzed. Simulations demonstrate that 1) the proposed multi-beam WFRFT-DM schemes are more power-efficient than the conventional multi-beam AN-DM scheme; 2) the transmission security can also be guaranteed even if the eavesdroppers are located close to or the same as the desired receivers; and 3) the proposed multi-beam WFRFT-DM schemes are capable of independent transmissions for different desired receivers with different modulations.

Abstract:In this letter, we propose a novel and straightforward scheme for Q-band (33–50 GHz) millimeter-wave signal generation enabled by a Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM)-based joint algorithm, which combines probabilistic shaping (PS) and precoding technology, to enhance the anti-interference ability of the transmission system. Based on the proposed scheme, we experimentally demonstrate the generation and transmission of 1.4-Gbaud 46-GHz PS-16-quadrature-amplitude-modulation (PS-16QAM) vector signals, showcasing improved bit-error-ratio (BER) in both standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) and wireless transmission cases. The proposed scheme exhibits a clear advantage in terms of nonlinear interference suppression and satisfies the hard-decision forward-error-correction (HD-FEC) threshold with a BER of 3.8 × 10 −3 in radio-over-fiber (RoF) systems.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally verify a photonics-aided W-band millimeter wave (MMW) radio-over-fiber (RoF) polarization-multiplexed envelope detection system for high-order quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) signals. To solve the problem of low spectral efficiency of common public radio interface (CPRI) and severe distortion of high-order QAM of envelope detection, quantization noise suppressed delta-sigma modulation (DSM) is introduced into the system. The experimental results show that the system can transmit 131072 QAM signals when meeting the error vector magnitude (EVM) requirements of 5G new radio (NR), and transmit 1048576 QAM signals when meeting the soft decision threshold (SD@20%).

Neural Networks for PAPR Reduction in Optical OFDM Signal Transmission

Abstract:In recent years, with the improvement of computing performance, the application of neural networks in communication field has been widely studied. In this paper, we propose and apply neural networks (NNs) to improve the transmission performance of optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexed (O-OFDM) signals. A pair of NNs is added in transmitter and receiver respectively, to modify and restore the QAM constellation. The main target for NNs is to reduce the peak to average power ratio (PAPR) of the O-OFDM signals and the bit error rate (BER) of the received signals. The proposed scheme is verified by the simulations. And a transmission of 18.8 Gb/s, 16-QAM optical OFDM signals is successfully demonstrated and analyzed for the cases with and without NNs. The experimental results show that, the PAPR and BER can be improved significantly (~4 dB for BER) after using NNs, since PAPR is reduced and more importantly the channel distortion and noises are effectively compensated by NNs via learning procedure.
