The Resistivity Imaging LWD Method Suitable for Oil-Based Drilling Fluid

Abstract:The goal of this study was to solve the problem of drilling fluids blocking circuits and losing signal during the logging process. Oil-based drilling fluids are prone to blocking the DC circuit and hence invalidating conventional resistivity when using the LWD method. In order to solve this problem, researchers proposed implementing the capacitive coupling-based non-contact conductance detection technology with a resistivity imaging LWD method suitable for oil-based drilling fluids. This paper summarized the main methods of resistivity measurement while drilling, and introduced the principle and characteristics of capacitive coupled non-contact conductance detection technology. The azimuth logging simulation model for oil-based drilling fluids was established by combining capacitive coupling principle and inductive coupling principle. Then, the logging simulation experiment under various working conditions was carried out with this model, and the relationships between the circumferential position and current amplitude, circumferential position of electrode and the current phase, as well as the imaging principle of button electrode were analyzed. The simulation results showed that the button electrode had azimuth detection capability, and the proposed logging method was feasible. A surface simulation logging system was designed to carry out the indoor test of azimuth logging. The test found that this logging system may to achieve formation imaging and measure the formation dip angle, and the relative error between the test result and the actual formation dip angle is only 4.7％. The study showed that the proposed resistivity imaging LWD method is able to perform lateral resistivity measurements while drilling in oil-based drilling fluids, and make the measured resistivity imaging to obtain the reliable logging results.

Abstract:Well logging technology is of great significance to oil production. A new lateral resistivity logging-while-drilling (LWD) method applied in oil-based drilling fluid condition is proposed in this paper by combining capacitive coupling with inductive coupling principle. By using a new logging model, the ineffectiveness of the conventional resistivity LWD methods in oil-based drilling fluid is overcome. The simulation and experimental results verify the feasibility of the method proposed. Meanwhile, the mapping relationship between formation equivalent resistance and its electrical properties is exposed. This research provides a method that can be used for reference in oil-based drilling liquid condition, which may have a broad perspective in well logging field.

Abstract:Well-logging imaging tool requires complex operating commands and data transfer and its underground control and imaging data transfer is the key for the borehole test.Firstly,the paper discussed the behavior of the tool such as the test monitoring,the rest part controlling,and the instruction interpreting and dispatching.The separating parts,including the status monitoring module,the auxiliary data measurement module and communication diagnosis module,were introduced in detail.Further,a robust transfer mechanism fulfills the reading,packaging and uploading of the imaging data.Applied to a new type of well-logging imaging tool,the design can meet the requirements of practical application,and the 500 words/s of data transfer rate can be reached.

Abstract:In order to solve the problem of measurement limits of traditional lateral resistivity logging while drilling (LWD) with oil-based drilling fluid, a method based on the capacitively coupled contactless conductivity detection (C4D) technique was proposed for signal detection and the corresponding device was developed. First, an equivalent logging circuit model based on C4D was established. Then, digital phase sensitive demodulation (DPSD) technique was introduced to detect amplitude and phase of weak logging signal, and formation resistivity was obtained by the established model. Meanwhile, finite element simulation was conducted to study validity of the model as well as response characteristics of the designed logging sensor. Finally, a simulated logging experimental device was designed, and the experiment was carried out at multiple excitation frequency. The results show that the designed device has good performance when excitation frequency is 20 kHz, and corresponding relative measurement errors are less than 5% within equivalent formation resistivity range of 0.135-8.368 kΩ·m.

Abstract:Multi-frequency Induction Logging is a novel well-logging technology and has a great deal of advantages compared with traditional ones.Exciting circuit is very important to this technology because the it is the main factor of determining the intensity of induction.This paper analyzes the relation of the amplifier type and transmitter frequency and efficiency of Multi-frequency Induction Logging Tool and the working principle and presents the design of Multi-frequency Induction Logging exciting circuit from the anger of optimizing exciting effect.Through simulating real working environment,the experiment result shows the exciting circuit we select is correct and reliable.The research work in this paper provides a valuable reference on the design for logging tool.

Abstract:A novel multi-frequency induction amplitude-phase logging technology is presented.Through measuring phase shift and amplitude ratio,this technology eliminates the interference of direct coupling signal in traditional induction logging.The theoretical basis of amplitude-phase logging technology is provided,the relationship between the logging response and the transmitting frequency is analyzed and the fundamental model for logging tool is designed.An experiment which simulates the investigating characteristic is done in the typical stratum.Experiment result shows that the investigative sensitivity and vertical resolution can meet the requirement.

Abstract:To obtain qualified logging while drilling (LWD) data, a new acoustic LWD tool was designed. Its overall design is introduced here, including the physical construction, electronic structure, and operation flowchart. Thereafter, core technologies adopted in this tool are presented, such as dominant exciting wave bands of dipole source, a sine wave pulse excitation circuit, broadband impedance matching, and an intellectualized active reception transducer. Lastly, we tested this tool in the azimuthal anisotropy module well, calibration well, and normal well, working in the model of the cable, sliding eye, and logging while drilling. Experiments showed that the core technologies achieved ideal results and that the LWD tool obtained qualified data.

A New Logging-While-Drilling Method for Resistivity Measurement in Oil-Based Mud.

Abstract:Resistivity logging is an important technique for identifying and estimating reservoirs. Oil-based mud (OBM) can improve drilling efficiency and decrease operation risks, and has been widely used in the well logging field. However, the non-conductive OBM makes the traditional logging-while-drilling (LWD) method with low frequency ineffective. In this work, a new oil-based LWD method is proposed by combining the capacitively coupled contactless conductivity detection (C4D) technique and the inductive coupling principle. The C4D technique is to overcome the electrical insulation problem of the OBM and construct an effective alternating current (AC) measurement path. Based on the inductive coupling principle, an induced voltage can be formed to be the indirect excitation voltage of the AC measurement path. Based on the proposed method, a corresponding logging instrument is developed. Numerical simulation was carried out and results show that the logging instrument has good measurement accuracy, deep detection depth and high vertical resolution. Practical experiments were also carried out, including the resistance box experiment and the well logging experiment. The results of the resistance box experiment show that the logging instrument has good resistance measurement accuracy. Lastly, the results of the well logging experiment indicate that the logging instrument can accurately reflect the positions of different patterns on the wellbore of the experimental well. Both numerical simulation and practical experiments verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the new method.

Abstract:As timing control for dual-frequency induction logging tools was very complex,the communication circuits was designed on the basis of CPU +FPGA,which met the needs of stably timing control and data communications.The Manchester coding and decoding,timing measurement and control of temperature and voltage were designed in FPGA.The timing control of the logging instrument,command decoding and processing,data packing and caching were designed in CPU.In practical applications,the timing control of the design is reliable and the communication to PC is stable,which fully meet the requirements of the products.

Abstract:Duel laterolog tool is always an important conventional resistivity tool. However, the deep and shallow resistivity curves measured by dual laterolog logging tool are unable to meet the demand for complicated oil and gas assessment thanks to further unfolding of exploration and development. To increase laterolog logging information amount and meet the demand for detailed evaluation, CNPC Logging Co Ltd made the study of theoretical methods and developed China's first array laterolog logging tool. Based on design of array electrode structure and combined with hard and soft focus method, we created six radial depth-detecting measurement patterns. As compared to dual laterolog, this method has a number of advantages, such as high vertical resolution and abundant radial information, clearly describing the formation invasion characteristics. A large amount of field tests indicated that logging curve characteristics and various indexes of the tool were in line with the requirements of theoretical design. The tool can be used for logging evaluation of thin layers and other complicated reservoirs.

Abstract:Aiming at the particularity of acoustic logging-while-drilling and down-hole instrument,an appropriate system of field maintenance and protection is proposed.The core of the system design is based on ARM9 microprocessor and embedded Linux system.In the system,sending commands and reading data are implemented through serial communication.Receiving commands and the function of the two-way transmission of data with the upper computer are realized by USB bus,besides the transmission of remote data is completed through the Ethernet.Inorder to be able to update the down-hole circuit program without dismantling the instrument application environment in time,serial port simulating JTAG port is used to complete updating the downloaded programs of DSP and CPLD in the down-hole instrument circuit.It is found that the system effectively enhances convenience and maintainability of the acoustic logging-while-drilling down-hole instrument,also with strong expansibility and so on.

Abstract:In order to achieve more effective monitoring and to solve the heavy workload issues of installation and removal on the existing wired-system logging site, thus guarantee the safety in normal operation, a wireless logging instrument system is designed to monitor the oil drilling platform. This paper introduces the overall architecture of the wireless system, and develops the hardware system - in which embedded software is designed - based on analog-digital conversion device, field-programmable gate array chip, and microprocessor. Combined with wireless sensor technology, analog measurements, and encoding quadruple frequency and phase-detection techniques, the wireless nodes in the system can detect and preprocess analog signals in the frequency range from 0.1 to 200 Hz and encoder signals of 90° phase difference, then output data through wireless transmitter module to upper monitoring center. Experimental results show that this system can realize a real-time wireless communication and monitoring for oil drilling platform stably. Moreover, it has features such as coding flexibility, high precision, good reliability, high integration, small size, and low-power consumption. Thus, the system provides a promising solution of data collection and analysis for the drilling platform.

Abstract:Induction logging through casing (ILTC) is of significant importance to the evaluation of residual oils. Traditional induction logging fails to work in cased wells due to the shielding effect of metallic casings. To date, the feasibility of ILTC remains an open question. In this article, we propose an ILTC based on the detection of lateral waves that carry the formation information. Based on the analytical equations derived to describe the hybrid modes of total magnetic fields that can be detected inside cased wells, numerical analyses aiming to describe the behavior of lateral waves were carried out in both frequency and time domains. The obtained results comply with full-wave simulations and existing scaled experiments. Our results indicate that if an ILTC tool can be properly configured to work in a region dominated by lateral waves, and the casing effect and the primary field of the lateral waves can be effectively compensated, it is feasible to implement an ILTC to detect formation conductivities ranging from 0.01 to 5 S/m.

Abstract:Acoustic logging-while-drilling tool is capable of collecting of acoustic logging data while drilling work processes at the same time. Moreover, the logging data were acquired when the formation was not contaminated by mud. However, mud pulse transmission has an extremely low transmission rate and only simple interactive communications can be realized between surface and down-hole tool, a large amount of logging data cannot be uploaded to the surface, so that logging personnel is not able to monitor geological condition in real time. To solve this problem, this paper embeds a time-difference extraction algorithm into the down-hole circuit system, the time-difference data which reflects formation information can be extracted from acoustic logging data in the down-hole tool. So that the processing result can be real-time uploaded to the surface, thus logging personnel can analyze the formation condition through time-difference data and consequently guide the drilling work. It is shown by experiment that the algorithm can run efficiently in the down-hole circuit and demonstrate the excellent performance of high accuracy, which meets the practical working requirements of acoustic logging-while-drilling tool.

Abstract:With the features of cross-dipole array acoustic logging signal,the design of control and processing circuit which is based on DSP+FPGA frame is presented.The hardware structure and the software design are demonstrated.It is emphasized that the way to achieve logging data communication interfaces and logic control modules.An algorithm which is used to detect head wave of cross-dipole acoustic logging signal is also introduced.The results of experiments show that the circuit can operate stably and reliably in high temperature and high pressure environment,and can satisfy the need of industrial production.

Abstract:According to the features of LWD(acoustic logging while drilling) signal,the design of signal acquisition and processing system which is based on DSP+ADC frame is presented.The hardware structure and the software design are introduced.The way to achieve the high precision synchronization sampling of six channels analog signal and data compression algorithm are emphasized.The resources on DSP are fully used to implement the control and data transport interfaces and complete the relevant data processing.The results of experiments show that the circuit design meets the demand of real-time and low power dissipation of LWD and can operate stably and reliably in high temperature and high pressure environment.
